Chuck Berry 1995 - Back To Back - #1: The Grateful Dead's 1995 Spring/Summer tour was a train wreck. Jerry Garcia, suffering from the after effects of his 1992 health issues, coupled with an ever increasing drug addiction, often was unable to rember lyrics or chords, sometimes turning off his instrument off during shows. Looking back, it's now easy to see the signs that pointed to his untimely passing in August 1995.  Beyond  Garcia's health, a host of other issues arose during the tour. Two fans fell from the upper deck at the June 24 show, lightning struck 3 fans before the June 25 show, the band was forced to cancel their July 3 show due to damage done to the venue the previous night, and 108 fans were injured when a structure collapsed during their July 6 concert. And of course, the band played their final show on July 9, just a month before we lost Jerry.  The only bright spot of this tragic run was the opening acts.  Bob Dylan, The Band, Dave Matthews, the Black Crowes, and Rusted Root all opened shows for the Dead during this1995 tour. So did the legendary Chuck Berry!  This soundboard recording captures Chuck leading in on May 28, 1995, 29 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.

The first Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction ceremonyy, held in 1986, featured one legendary inductee after the next.  Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Fats Domino, The Everly Brothers, James Brown, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis - everyone a no brainer.  The only sad part was so many of them were no longer with us to celebrtae their achievement.  Those still with us, however, such as Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis, showed why, in the words of Neil Young, "rock & roll will never die", as they led all star jams on such classics as Roll Over Beethoven, Reelin' & Rockin', and Whole Lotta Shaking Going On.

1994 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 1994-01-19 - New York, NY (TV SBD)

The 1994 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction ceremony was another marked by both wonderous moments and lingering tensions. Jerry Garcia decided to skip the Grateful Dead's induction, though the rest of the band did their best to make light of the situation by bringing along a life size cardboard cut out of their lead guitarist.  Robbie Robertson of The Band was in attendance, but Levon Helm decided not to show up due to long running issues with Robertson. Paul McCartney, who skipped The Beatles' induction in 1988 due to legal dispues with his former bandmates and Yoko Ono, was on hand to induct John Lennon, He even hugged Ono at the end of his induction speech in an emotional reconciliation. If  only McCartney had performed in tribute to Lennon, instead of the odd pairing of Bruce Springsteen and Axl Rose who played Come Together. No one in attendance will ever forget Bono's tribute to the late Bob Marley - "Showman, shaman, human, Jamaican!" Perhaps the best musical moments of the night belonged to 2 men not inducted in 1994. Jeff Beck played a moving version of People Get Ready to honor Rod Stewart, who had to miss the ceremony due to an earthquake in Los Angeles.  And Chuck Berry strutted his stuff at the age of 68 on Roll Over Beethoven, backed by  Bob Weir and Bruce Hornsby.

Few years in rock history were as memorable and innovative as 1967.  From i]the ushering in of the psychedelic scene with Sgt. Pepper's, to memorable debut albums such as Surrealistic Pillow, Are You Experienced? and the self titled debuts from The Doors and The Grateful Dead,  to the Monterrey Pop Festival to the Summer Of Love, 1967 took rock and roll from 2 minute radio friendly AM songs to complex, multi-dimensional arrangements that found a home on free form FM radio. In the US, few cities were as important to the new revolution in rock than San Francisco. Bill Graham's Fillmore and Wiinterland arenas became the stomping grounds for bands like the Dead, the Airplane, and Santana, just to name 3, who played jam filled concerts that often saw one song seamlessly fade into the next, fueled by psychedelic light shows and a host of drugs. Incredibly, amidst this sea of change, an icon from the 1950s  became a regular performer at Graham's 2 venues. He played 10 shows at Winterland that year, 1 on the same bill with the Dead, 6 on the same night as Eric Burden and 3 sharing the bill with Steve Miller.  He performed 7 times at Winterland - 2 on the same bill s the Grateful Dead, 3 on the same night as The Doors, and 2 on sharing the bill with Big Brother and the Holding Company. As mentioned in our Stveve Miller potst, his March 19 show at the Fillmore, when he was backed by Steve Miller, was released as a live album in late 1967.  This soindboar recording captures Chuck still rocking 35 years after the summer of love, and 2 decades ago today, in Switzerland on June 29, 2002.

1960s - #3: After spending over a year and  half in jail from February 1962 to October 1963, Chick Berry returned to the music world.  Incredibly, despite his time away, his music remained popular thank to British invasion bands such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, who had released cover versions of his tunes.  Berry went right to work, releasing eight singles from 1964 to 1965, including three that reached the top 20 on the Billboard charts - No Particular Place To Go, You Never Can Tell, and Nadine. He also toured extensively, including run in Europe in both 1964 and 1965.  This soundboard recording captures him during that 1965 tour, in Belgium on February 6, 1965, 56 years ago today.

1995 - While the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame foundation began in 1983 and inducted its first class in 1986, the organization didn’t have a physical structure to honor the inductees and tell the story of their music until 1995. The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame and Museum opened in the city of Cleveland on September 1,  1995. The next night, September 2, 1995, 2 dozen years ago this very day, Cleveland Stadium hosted an All Star concert to commemorate the event, as captured in this FM Broadcast.  We actually posted an abbreviated version of this show a few years ago but now, by combining 2 sources, we have the concert in its entirety.

1970s - #4:  A year after touring recording his London Sessions album in 1972, Chuck Berry returned to Europe for another run of  live shows.  Chuck played 21 concerts between January 15 an February 10, 1973, visiting Scotland, England, The Netherlands, Belgium. Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, France and Germany. This soundboard recording captures Chuck on night 6 of the tour, in Amsterdam, on January 20, 1973, 45 years ago today.

In their 30 year career spanning over 2300 concerts, the Grateful Dead played 484 different songs. Only 17 of those tunes were played more than 400 times each, and two of them were covers of Chuck Berry songs - Promised Land (427) and Around & Around (417). The Dead also played Johnny B. Goode, probably Chuck's most famous tune, 284 times live. In December 1971, the Dead played Chuck's Run Rudolph Run a half a dozen times live. Two other Chuck Berry tunes, Let It Rock & You Never Can Tell, were often played live by the Jerry Garcia band. One other connection between The Dead and Chuck - the two appeared on a double bill at the Fillmore West in San Francisco on March 19, 1967. This soundboard recording captures Chuck live in Seattle on September 1, 1980, 37 years ago today. The set list includes all 3 of Chuck's songs that the Dead played most often!

Chuck Berry - 1972-03-29 - London, UK (FM)

In May 1970, Howlin' Wolf traveled to Olympic Sound Studios in London, England, to record songs for The London Howlin' Wolf Sessions. The album was released in August 1971 and peaked at number 28 on Billboard magazine's R&B Albums chart and number 79 on the Billboard 200. Inspired by Wolf's success, Muddy Waters recorded his own London Sessions album in December 1971, and then Chuck Berry Berry did the same in 1972. While in London, Berry played a number of live shows, including one  on February 3, 1972, portions of which were included on the London Sessions album. Ironically, the single from the album an edited version of the novelty song My Ding A Ling, became the only number 1 hit for a man who reached the top 40 on at least a dozen occasions with songs such as Promised Land, Maybellene and of course, Johnny B. Goode This FM broadcast captures Chuck during that same London visit, on March 29, 1972, 42 years ago today.

Chuck Berry was part of the inaugural class of the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1986, inducted alongside Buddy Holly, Elvis Presely, The Everly Brothers, Fats Domino, James Brown, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Ray Charles, and Sam Cooke. Talk about star power. Durng that ceremony, Chuck showed why, in the words of Neil Young, "rock & roll will never die", as he led an all star jam on such classics as Roll Over Beethoven and Reelin' & Rockin'. This FM broadcast captures Berry a dozen years before his induction, on March 18, 1974, 3 dozen years ago today, in Los Angeles. The concert was taped for ABC In Concert, and broadcast about a month later, on April 12.
