1960s - #4: The Beatles were originally scheduled to record a session for the BBC radio show Saturday Club on on March 11, but had to cancel due to John Lennon’s illness. Instead they made a live appearance on the show on March 16, 1963, 63 years ago today, as captured in this BBC broadcast recording. The group arrived at 9 am for a quick rehearsal, with the live broadcast beginning at 10 am.  The Fab Four performed six songs, including 3 from their debut album Please Please Me, which would be released 6 days later - I Saw Her Standing There, Misery, and the title track. Immediately after the broadcast, The Beatles drove 158 miles to Sheffield, where they rejoined touring partners Tommy Roe and Chris Montez for that night's scheduled concert!

The Beatles - 1965-08-18 - Atlanta, GA (SBD)

Almost every rock artist has been influenced by The Beatles, and Jerry Garcia was no exception. According to one biography of Jerry Garcia, the reason Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions morphed into the Grateful Dead was all thanks to the Fab Four. "For one thing, like half of America under the age of 25, Jerry had been seduced by the Beatles, especially their film, A Hard Day's Night, which depicted life in a rock and roll band as just about the most fun that could be had on planet earth. The Beatles were deliciously irreverent and in-your-face anarchic; untameable gadabouts on an endless lark, always living in a completely different universe than the pitiable straight forces that were constantly trying to control, or at the very least, restrain them." "The Beatles were why we turned from a jug band into a rock and roll band" said Bob Weir. Over the years, The Grateful Dead incorporated a host of Beatle tunes into their live shows, including A Day In the Life, Blackbird, Day Tripper, Hey Jude, I Want To Tell You. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, Rain, Revolution, Tomorrow Never Knows and Why Don't We Do It In The Road. They also played McCartney’s That Would Be Something. Jerry Garcia’s solo shows included covers of I Saw Her Standing There, Eleanor Rigby and Dear Prudence, as well as McCartney’s Let Me Roll It. In the 1960s, Linda McCartney did a photo session with the Dead. Those pictures were later incorporated into a nine-minute film released in 1996 called Grateful Dead: A Photofilm. It was directed by none other than Sir Paul McCartney. McCartney had hoped to show the film to Jerry Garcia just before the guitarist passed away. ”I heard on the news that Jerry had died, and I thought, ‘Oh no, I was just about to show the film to him,’ ” McCartney told the New York Times. ”I’d been in correspondence with him, because he was a painter and I thought he’d like this. Unfortunately, I missed him. I suppose it has become a little bit of a tribute to Jerry because of it.” McCartney admitted he had never been to a Dead concert, but after making the film, regretted he never took the opportunity to do so. 

Thris soundboard captures the lads from Liverpool threeee days after their historic show at Shea Stadium, on August 18, 1965, 6 decades ago today, in Atlanta for the 3rd concert on their 1965 North American Tour. As in other cities, their arrival in Atlanta was more than just a concert. The city declared it Beatle Day. DJ Tony Taylor, who along with Paul Drew, served as emcees for the show, wrote that "The Beatles concert at Atlanta Stadium sticks in my mind as perhaps the greatest event I ever witnessed. The stadium bordered on hysteria. I can still see the faces of the girls, tears in their eyes as they hung over the wall and the policemen tried to restrain them. There seemed to be one continuous scream. It was super high pitched and unrelenting." Such was the power of Beatlemania as it swept across America.  For Atlanta. it was the first, and only time, The Beatles would perform in the city. The Beatles, as we know all too well, broke up in 1969. Fulton County Stadium, site of the concert, was demolished in 1997. All that remains are the memories of the 34,000 fans in attendance that night, fans who were among the lucky few to experience one of only 25 concerts the Beatles played in North America on their 1965 and 1966 stadium tours.

1960s - #1:  On April 1, 1963, 62 years ago today, The Beatles recorded two radio appearances for for the BBC program "Side by Side."  Each week The Karl Denver Trio would host a guest group on the show, opening each program with the song Side by Side sung by the Trio and their guest act. The Beatles recorded only 1 version of "Side by Side", deciding to use the same recording for both programs.  For the first show, which would be broadcast on April 22, 1963, the Fab Four recorded I Saw Her Standing There, Do You Want To Know A Secret, Baby It's You, Please Please Me, From Me to You, and Misery. Unfortunately, no tape of that seems to exist. That said, this FM Broadcast, which originally aired on May 13, 1963, captures most of second show, Long Tall Sally, A Taste of Honey, Chains, Thank You Girl, and Boys.  From Me To You, however, is missing from the tape.

Beatles 1964 - Back To Back - #1: Less than a month before their historic appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show that officially brought Beatlemania to America, the Beatles were "across the pond' in Paris, lauching an 18 day run at the Olympia Theatre,  They would perform twice, and sometimes 3 times, each day, topping a 9 act bill that included French singer Sylvie Vartan or America's Trini Lopez.  The set list featured From Me To You, Roll Over Beethoven, She Loves You, This Boy, Boys, I Want To Hold Your Hand, Twist And Shout and Long Tall Sally, although for some shows, particularly the matinée performances, they played fewer tunes,.  The Olympia, a classic old world theater, was not quite equipped for modern rock & roll, with the band's amps often overloading and blowing out fuses!  This soundboard recording captures the day show from Janaury 16, 1964, 61 years ago today.  Stop back later today for the evening performance which is the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.

The 1960s - #6: On the evening of October 25, 1962, 62 years ago today, the Beatles perfromed before a live audience at the Playhouse Theater in Manchester, for the BBC show, Here We Go, which was broadcast on the radio the following day.  This was the first BBC performance by the The Beatles to include Ringo, who had joined the band on August 18.  At the time of the show, Love Me Do had just reached #27 on the British charts.  Download this one to get a taste of The Fab Four before Beatlemania erupted wold wide.

The organizers of the Woodstock Festival had every intention of having the biggest musical acts in the world play the event, and that meant making every effort to get The Beatles. Most sources on the internet concur that the Woodstock team reached out to John Lennon about having The Beatles play. The story gets a bit messy, however, after that,  Some sites simply say the band turned down the offer because, except for their rooftop performance in January 1969, they hadn't played live in over 3 years. Other sources claim that Lennon, who was in Canada at the time. couldn't commit to playing with his band mates since as the Nixon administration wouldn't let him back into the US. Still other sites claim that Lennon told the Woodstock organizers The Beatles would only play the festival if the The Plastic Ono Band, featuring Yoko, also got an invite. The organizers politely declined that deal! Of course, John also didn't tell the organizers that by August 1969, The Beatles were really a band in name only. Tensions had been building since the ill fated Get back session in early January. Somehow, they put all their issues aside to produce once last masterpiece. In August, they finished recording one of the legendary albums of the year, and of all time, Abbey Road, which would be the final disc they ever recorded (Let It Be would be released the following year but the tracks on that album were recorded during the earlierget back sessions.). Just a few days before Abbey Road was released on September 26, John told the others he wanted a divorce from the group. 

Four years before Woodstock, and 59 years ago today, on August 14, 1965, The Beatles taped their 4th and final appearance on the Ed Sullivan show, as captured in this soundboard recording.  The Fab Four played 6 songs for the show, which was broadcast on September 12, 1965.  The day after the taping, on August 15, 1965, The Beatles would make history once again, playing the first stadium rock concert at Shea Stadium in New York in front of a crowd over over 55,000 fans.

Perhaps the most significant moment in rock & roll history transpired 60 years ago today, on February 9, 1964, when the Beatles appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show for the very first time. A nation weary and shocked by the assassination of President Kennedy needed to be uplifted, and The Beatles did that and more. An estimated 73 million Americans tuned into that broadcast, and after 5 songs, which could barely be heard over the screams of the teenage girls who packed the audience, music, TV and pop culture were transformed forever. Beatlemania, The British Invasion, stadium sized rock concerts, album oriented rock, new fashion trends and hairstyles, TV as a major promotional vehicle for reaching the masses and countless other revolutions followed in the wake of the Beatles appearance on the Sullivan show. The band would appear twice more in February, on the 16th and the 23rd, once in May 1964, and then again in September 1965 (a month after the historic Shea Stadium show highlighted in an earlier post), their last live appearance. The Beatles continued to work with Ed Sullivan from 1966 and 1970, however, replacing live performances with filmed promotional clips of their new songs, the first ever music videos, years prior to the launch of MTV! Those videos included Paperback Writer, Rain, Penny Lane, Strawberry Fields Forever, Hello Goodbye, Two Of Us and Let It Be. 1960s - #7: Beatlemania was running wild when the Fab Four flew into Stockholm on July 28. 1964, 59 years ago today, as over 3000 fans crowded the airport to greet them as they landed. The band was scheduled to play 4 shows in 2 days, at 6:45 and 10 pm each day.  Also on the bill were The Kays, The Moonlighters, The Streaplers, Jimmy Justice, The Mascots and The Shanes. This FM broadcast captures one of the 2 shows on July 28, though which one has never been pinned down, with some sources even claiming its from July 29.  Whatever the actual date, its the Beatles live in 1964, what more do you need?!?!

1960s - #6: On December 18, 1963, The Beatles recorded a radio special entitled From Us To You, a play on the title their #1 single, From Me To You, that was broadcast across the UK on Boxing Day.  The broadcast was so successful that The Beatles agreed to record a follow up session, From Us to You 2, on February 28, 1964, 59 years ago today and 3 weeks after their historic appearance of the Ed Sullivan show in the United States. The session began at 6.30 pm and ended at 9 pm with the Beatles playing 8 songs.  The show was hosted by Alan Freeman, and was broadcast on BBC radio on Easter Monday, March 30, 1964.

1960s - #4:  On September 7, 1963, 59 years ago this very day, The Beatles stopped off at the Playhouse Theatre in London to record a BBC radio session for Saturday Club, The show was celebrating its 5th anniversay, having broadcast 262 episodes since its debut on October 4, 1958. The Beatles' session would be broadcast on October 5, 1963. Including rehearsals, the session lasted from 1:00 to 4:00 pm, with the band performing 5 songs, plus a happy biorthday tribute to the Saturday Club. After the recording session, The Fab Four headed off to Croydon for their scheduled concert that evening! On August 15, 1965, the Beatles would once again make historywhen they took the stage at Shea Stadium, in Flushing Queens in New York City.  The show was the first on their 1965 summer tour, but more importantly, it was also the first-ever stadium rock concert. Beatlemania required a setting larger than any band before had ever needed. Rock & roll would never be the same after this show. Today's mega outdoor events, complete with video screens, giant stages, special effects and pyrotechnics are the legacy of the Beatles performance that August night in Queens. Introduced by eEd Sullivan they would play 12 songs in just 30 minutes, but the impact has lasted a life time. The night before their concert at Shea, The Beatles recorded their 4th appearance on the Ed Sullivam show,  Their first, of course, back on February 9, 1964, became the most watched television program of all time a that point in history.  This 1965 appearnace would be the last time they played live for Ed Sullivam  Future appearances would simply include promotional videos for their lates singles (Yes, long before MTv, The beatles created the music video!). This soundboard recording captures all 6 sonsg from that August 14, 1965 taping, which took place 57 years ago today. TV audiences wouldn't get to see it, however, until it was broadcast on September 15, 1965, when it garnerd a 60% share of the audience, yet another testament to the popularity of the Fab Four!

The Beatles - 1966-06-24 - Munich, Germany (SBD)

The Beatles ruling the Summer of Love in 1967 was a direct result of two major events in 1966.  The first was the release of the album Revolver in August 1966.  That disc, which many critics feel is finest work ever produced by the Fab Four, started the process of making albums, rather than singles, the focus of the band's efforts.  In addition, the music, lyrics and themes of the album were directly influenced by the band's use of psychedelic drugs, as well as the growing counter culture movement of the times.  Moreover, Revolver demonstrated the Beatles willingness to experiment in the studio with sound. instruments and technology,  techniques they would take to new heights with Sgt. Pepper's. The second decision was to cease touring at the end of 1966.  The band had grown frustrated with the sound quality of their live shows, the fact that the audience was barely listening to the music, and the growing security issues at each venue. In addition, they knew that the new music they were creating, such as the songs on Revolver, could never be reproduced on stage to due all the studio effects they were using.  Moreover, they saw working in the studio as the new path to expand their musicianship, innovate and create. Touring simply took them away from the studio work and interfered with the creative process. Once off the road, they had unlimited studio time, and the result was Sgt Pepper's.  This television soundboard recording captures The Beatles during that final tour, in Germany on June 24, 1966, 56 years ago today.

Beatles 1964 - Back To Back - #1: Less than a month before their historic appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show that officially brought Beatlemania to America, the Beatles were "across the pond' in Paris, lauching an 18 day run at the Olympia Theatre,  They would perform twice, and sometimes 3 times, each day, topping a 9 act bill that included French singer Sylvie Vartan or America's Trini Lopez.  The set list featured From Me To You, Roll Over Beethoven, She Loves You, This Boy, Boys, I Want To Hold Your Hand, Twist And Shout and Long Tall Sally, although for some shows, particularly the matinée performances, they played fewer tunes,.  The Olympia, a classic old world theater, was not quite equipped for modern rock & roil, with the band's amps often overloading and blowing out fuses!  This soundboard recording captures the day show from Janaury 16, 1964, 57 years ago today.  Stop back later today for the evening performance. .

The Beatles - 1963-11-20 - Manchester, UK (SBD)

1960s - #4; On November 20, 1963, 57 years ago today, The Beatles performed two shows at Manchester’s ABC Cinema. The concerts marked the 16th date of the band's 1963 Autumn Tour.  Each show featured the same 10 song set:  I Saw Her Standing There, From Me To You, All My Loving, You Really Got A Hold On Me, Roll Over Beethoven, Boys, Till There Was You, She Loves You, Money (That’s What I Want) and Twist And Shout. .During the first show, Pathé News filmed the group performing She Loves You and Twist And Shout, as captured in this soundboard recording.. Accompanied with backstage footage and crowd scenes, that film became an eight-minute movie feature entitled The Beatles Come To Town, which was shown in the UK in late December.

The Beatles Live At Shea Described By Erupting Fans

The Beatles - 1965-08-15 - Shea Stadium, Flushing NY (SBD)

I grew up in Flushing, Queens, 1 train stop from Shea Stadium, former home of the New York Mets (though I'm a Yankee fan through and through - that was passed down from my dad!). I was 6 years old, just about to enter first grade, and way too young to understand what it meant when the Beatles took the stage at Shea on August 15, 1965, 55 years ago today. Once again, the Beatles would make history. The show was the first on their 1965 summer tour, but more importantly, it was also the first-ever stadium rock concert. Beatlemania required a setting larger than any band before had ever needed. Rock & roll would never be the same after this show. Today's mega outdoor events, complete with video screens, giant stages, special effects and pyrotechnics are the legacy of the Beatles performance that August night in Queens. This soundboard recording, captures the entire 30 minute performance (a 1/2 hour!! -- today, I'm annoyed if a band plays less than 3 hours!), including the introduction by Ed Sullivan, as well as all of the opening acts. A dozen songs, 30 minutes and the show was over, but its impact has lasted a life time. Note - we posted this previously on So Many Roads, but this version includes the entire show, including sets by King Curtis, Cannibal & Headhunters and Brenda Holloway.

The Beatles/Jerry Garcia Connections

• Almost every rock band has been influenced by The Beatles, and Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead are no exception. 
• According to one biography of Jerry Garcia, the reason Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions morphed into the Grateful Dead was all thanks to the Fab Four. "For one thing, like half of America under the age of 25, Jerry had been seduced by the Beatles, especially their film, A Hard Day's Night, which depicted life in a rock and roll band as just about the most fun that could be had on planet earth. The Beatles were deliciously irreverent and in-your-face anarchic; untameable gadabouts on an endless lark, always living in a completely different universe than the pitiable straight forces that were constantly trying to control, or at the very least, restrain them." "The Beatles were why we turned from a jug band into a rock and roll band" said Bob Weir. 
• Over the years, The Grateful Dead incorporated a host of Beatle tunes into their live shows, including A Day In the Life, Blackbird, Day Tripper, Hey Jude, I Want To Tell You. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, Rain, Revolution, Tomorrow Never Knows and Why Don't We Do It In The Road.. They also played McCartney’s That Would Be Something. 
• Jerry Garcia’s solo shows included covers of I Saw Her Standing There, Eleanor Rigby and Dear Prudence, as well as McCartney’s Let Me Roll It. 
• In the 1960s, Linda McCartney did a photo session with the Dead. Those pictures were later incorporated into a nine-minute film released in 1996 called Grateful Dead: A Photofilm. It was directed by none other than Sir Paul McCartney. McCartney had hoped to show the film to Jerry Garcia just before the guitarist passed away. ”I heard on the news that Jerry had died, and I thought, ‘Oh no, I was just about to show the film to him,’ ” McCartney told the New York Times. ”I’d been in correspondence with him, because he was a painter and I thought he’d like this. Unfortunately, I missed him. I suppose it has become a little bit of a tribute to Jerry because of it.”
• McCartney admitted he had never been to a Dead concert, but after making the film, regretted he never took the opportunity to do so.
