The Kinks - 1973-03-31 - Flushing, NY (SBD)

In August 1972, The Kinks released the double album Everybody's in Show-Biz, which featured 1 disc of studio music and 1 disc recorded live at Carnegie Hall in New York earlier that year. The album features a change in Ray Davies' songwriting style toward more theatrical, campy and vaudevillian work, as evidenced by the rock-opera concept albums that followed it. The band released Celluloid Heroes as a single, and while it failed to chart, it became a favorite of FM radio stations across the US. The album also marks Davies' first explorations of the trials of rock-star life and the monotony of touring. Given that theme, its ironic that the 2nd disc featured a live show, and maybe even more ironic that the band went on tour in late 1972/early 1973 in support of the disc. This soundboard recording captures The Kinks in Flushing, NY on March 31, 1973, 42 years ago today.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - 2002-03-30 - Anaheim, CA (SBD ALD)

When they concluded their historic 1974 tour, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young would not go on the road again for over 25 years. Then, with the start of the new century, they launched 3 tours in 6 years. In 2000, they reunited for the first time since 1974 for the CSNY2K tour, the name being derived from the infamous Y2K computer scare that turned out to be much ado about nothing. In 2006, they launched the Freedom Of Speech tour, protesting the policies of then President George W. Bush. In between, in 2002, the quartet embarked on the Tour of America. a 40 concert run that started on February 6 in Detroit and ran until the final show on April 29 in Portland. This soundboard ALD recording captures the band on March 30 2002, 13years ago today, in Anaheim near the middle of that run

McGuinn, Clark and Hillman - 1979-03-29 - Denver, CO (FM)

We’ve posted several Byrds reunions shows from the late 1970’s here at So Many Roads, including the December 8, 1977 and February 9, 1978 concerts where David Crosby sat in. While the Byrds never officially re-formed, those shows did lead to McGuinn, Clark and Hillman touring and recording together. In early 1979, they released their self-titled debut album, which spawned the top 40 hit, Don’t You Write Her Off Like That. The album was a disappointment to both fans and critics, who were expecting the Byrds but instead of crisp harmonies and McGuinn’s trademark Rickenbacker guitar, got disco rhythms, slick production, strings and horns. McGuinn, Clark and Hillman went on tour in support of the album in the Spring of 1979, and fortunately their live shows featured plenty of material from their days with The Byrds. This FM broadcast captures the trio on March 29, 1979, 3 dozen years ago today, in Denver. Download this one to hear the closest thing to the Byrds since their break up.

Bruce Hornsby - 1999-03-28 - Williamsburg, VA (SBD)

On April 12, 1999, I saw one of my favorite concerts - Bruce Hornsby at the Morristown Performing Arts Center. With just over 1000 seats, the MPAC is the perfect place for a show. Hornsby was in excellent form, combining his own material with a host of wonderful covers, including Girl from North Country, Madman Across The Water, Tupeluo Honey and Franklin’s Tower. My lovely bride was pregnant at the time with my twin boys, so I always tell them it was their first concert! Unfortunately, I’ve yet to come across a tape of that show. This soundboard recording from March 28, 1999, 16 years ago today, is from just about 2 weeks prior to when Hornsby played Morristown. Of course, Hornsby learned his lessons well while playing with the Dead, so no two shows of his are alike. That said, even though this performance from Williamsburg includes very few of the songs he played in Morristown, it still showcases Hornsby’s tremendous piano playing and improvisational skills.

April's Theme At So Many Roads

We've featured lots of numbers in our theme's so far this year, and April continues that trend.  For April, our theme will be 6 decades, 6 concerts, or for short 6 by 6.  In other words, we'll feature 6 different concerts from each of 6 decades (1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s) for a total of 36 shows this month.

By the way, while will bring you plenty of big names - think Beatles, the Who, Stones, etc. - we're also going to toss in some of my guilty pleasures and a few lesser known artists, just to keep it fresh and interesting!

John Hiatt - 1994-03-27 - San Francisco, CA (FM)

If you've been a regular visitor to So Many Roads, you'll know that I'm a big fan of John Hiatt.  While his 1987 and 1988 albums Bring The Family and Slow Turning are his best known, his 1993 disc, Perfectly Good Guitar, may just be my favorite.  Almost every one of the album's 12 tracks is worth playing again and again, with the title tune, Cross My Fingers, Straight Outta Time, Loving A Hurricane, and Buffalo River Home being true standouts.  In fact, that last tune, with its catchy tune playing counterpoint to its saddening lyrics, just may be Hiatt's best.  This FM broadcast captures Hiatt about 6 months after the release of Perfectly Good Guitar, at Slim's in San Francisco on March 27, 1994, 21 years ago today.  The intimate venue serves Hiatt well, allowing his lyrics as well as his music to shine.  This set is the perfect collection of songs from his then new album, along with the best of his work from the late 1980s.  A must have if you're a Hiatt fan, and a great introduction for anyone wanting to experience his music for the first time!

While the last leg of the Elevation Tour is remembered for U2's remarkable tribute to the victims of the 9-11 terrorist attacks, the early parts of the tour were a celebration of the band's amazing new album, All That You Can't Leave Behind. Following the mixed reception to their 1997 album, Pop, U2 returned to their roots for All That You Can't Leave Behind. At the time of the album's release, U2 said on a number of occasions that they were "reapplying for the job of the best band in the world". The public and critics heartily approved, as the disc sold over 12 million copies and won 7 Grammy Awards. The songs Beautiful Day, Walk On, Elevation, and Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of all reached the top 5 on the Billboard charts in the United Kingdom. Of course, many of the album's songs, especially Walk On, New York and Peace On Earth, would take on new meaning in the wake of the events of 9-11.This IEM recording captures the band in Miami on March 26, 2001, 14 years ago today, and just about 6 months before that tragic moment.

Loggins & Messina – 1972-03-25 – New York, NY (SBD)

Jim Messina, formerly of Poco and Buffalo Springfield, was working as an independent record producer for Columbia Records in 1970 when he met Kenny Loggins, a little-known singer/songwriter who was signed to ABC Records. The two recorded a number of Loggins' compositions in Messina's home living room. Messina then helped Loggins negotiate a 6 album record deal with Columbia. Loggins began recording his debut album for Columbia in early 1971, with Messina serving as producer. By the time the album was completed, however, Messina had contributed so much to the album - in terms of songwriting, arrangement, instrumentation, and vocals - that his guest spot turned into a full time partnership with Loggins. After the release of the duo’s first album in November 1971, Loggins and Messina found themselves back in the studio on March 25, 1972, 43 years ago today, to cut a promotional album for CBS records. Mike Martin of Flying M Productions came across a vinyl copy of that promo disc, and digitally re-mastered it, removing countless pops and clicks. The resulting soundboard recording captures the birth of Loggins and Messina, including such classics as Danny's Song, House At Pooh Corner. Your Mama Don't Dance and Vahevalla. This is a rare piece of rock history and a must have for your collection. My thanks again to my buddy Lakercrazy who shared this with me.

On October 19, 1979, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers released their breakthrough album entitled Damn The Torpedoes. The disc climbed to #2 on the Billboard charts, where it stayed for 7 weeks, with the only thing preventing it from reaching the top spot being Pink Floyd’s monumental album The Wall. The album yielded two top 15 singles, Don't Do Me Like That which reached #10 and Refugee at #15. The album also contained soon to be FM radio favorites Here Comes My Girl, Even the Losers and Louisiana Rain. This FM broadcast captures Petty in the UK on tour in support of Damn The Torpedoes on March 24, 1980, 35 years ago today.

Bruce Springsteen - 2009-03-23- Asbury Park, NJ (SBD)

On April 1. 2009, Bruce Springsteen launched the Working On A Dream tour, the title taken from his album released in January of that year. Yet, despite the title, the tour featured very little material from the new disc. Instead the set list and themes were more comparable to the Magic tour from a year earlier, including a focus on current topics such as the great recession. Overall the tour was a critical and commercial success, but its conclusion would have a sad aftermath. The tour would be Bruce’s last with Clarence Clemons at his side, as the saxophonist would pass away in 2011. To warm up for the tour. Springsteen played 2 rehearsal concerts in Asbury Park on the Jersey Shore. This soundboard recording captures the first of those two shows, on March 23, 2009, 6 years ago today.

Until I went off to college, some 30 years ago, I really didn't listen to much Santana. One of the guys I became close friends with at school, however, was really into Carlos. In fact, I remember that his Christmas gift from his girlfriend (later wife) one year was LOTUS, a 3 disc live album, which, at the time, was only available as an import from Japan. I think it cost the then outrageous sum of $50! In any event, he listened to a lot of Santana, and as a result I really came to appreciate how well Carlos plays. Bob Seger began playing rock and roll in the 1960's, but he became a star in the decade of the 1970s. This FM broadcast captures Seger on March 21, 1977, 38 years ago today in Boston, on tour in support of his album Night Moves, released in October 1976. For Seger, who started in the Detroit music scene in 1961, Night Moves was the culmination of 15 years of paying his dues in the studio and on the road. The disc went to #8 on the Billboard charts, becoming Seger’s first top ten album. In addition to its commercial success, the album received critical acclaim, getting a 4 star review from Rolling Stone and an A- rating from Robert Christgau. The title track went to #4 on the Billboard charts, while 2 other singles, Mainstreet and Rock & Roll Never Forgets, reached #24 and #41, respectively. Joe Jackson - 1980-03-20 - Bremen, Germany (FM)

Way back on February 15, 1980, my college room mates and I ventured to Passaic NJ to see Joe Jackson at the Capitol Theatre. The Capitol was a unique place for a show, which I've discussed in several other posts on this site. Joe Jackson was another of the emerging new wave artists whose music was angry, sparse and defiant, in reaction to the over blown progressive rock bands of the day. Any 20 year old who had ever had a girl break up with him and then immediately date another guy, could empathize with Joe's song Is She really Going Out With Him (my exact experience in the fall of 1979). Joe didn't disappoint, eschewing all sentimentality on the day after Valentine's Day and playing a driving set featuring most of the tunes from Look Sharp and I'm The Man. He even threw in an awesome version of Jimmy Cliff's The Harder They Come. This FM broadcast captures Joe just about a month after I saw him in NJ, headlining a show for Radio Bremen in Germany, on March 20, 1980, 35 years ago today.

Jerry Garcia Band - 1978-03-19 - Stanley Theatre (SBD)

On March 17, 1978, I experienced 2 "firsts" in my concert "career" - I made my initial visit to the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ, and I saw the Jerry Garcia Band for the first time. The Capitol was unlike any other concert venue I'd ever visit. Located in a downtrodden section of Passaic, the Capitol was a X-rated movie theater during the day! John Scher, one of rock's legendary promoters, started producing shows at the 3200-seat Capitol in 1971, soon after the Filmore East closed. Thanks to Scher, many of rock's largest acts, such as The Stones, The Dead, The Who and Bruce Springsteen, would play shows at the Capitol long after they became superstars selling our 50,000 seat stadiums. For a complete history of the Capitol, including copies of playbills and a list of every show ever at the venue, go here. Jerry's performance that March 1978 night made my first visit to the Capitol one I'd never forget. The band was in one of those zones, where every thing they attempted went right, including stellar versions of The Harder They Come, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down and Tore Up. I've posted both the early and last shows here at So many Roads. The next night, March 18, in Washington DC, is captured on the CD, Pure Jerry: Volume 6. Today we bring the show from 2 nights after my Capitol Theatre sojourn, from March 19, 1978, 37 years ago today, from the Stanley Theatre in Pittsburgh. It's an excellent soundboard recording that captures one of my favorite Jerry Garcia band line-ups in peak form!

A few years ago, we brought you Dave Mason’s set at Cal Jam 2, held on March 18, 1978, 37 years ago today, at Ontario Motor Speedway in California.   Today, we have a soundboard recording of Santana’s set from that same festival. For Santana, it was an interesting choice to appear at a festival that featured a host of new hard rocking musical acts, with performances from Aerosmith, Ted Nugent, Heart, and Mahogany Rush. Perhaps it was a calculated move as during the late 1970s and early 1980s, Santana would experiment with more of an AOR sound, as reflected in tunes such as She’s Not There (the opening number at this show), Open Invitation, All I Ever Wanted and Well, Alright.

Sheryl Crow - 1995-03-17 - Beacon Theatre, NY (SBD)

When Sheryl Crow released the album Tuesday Night Music Club in August 1993, it garnered some critical accolades but very little public attention. Crow was featured in Rolling Stone’s “New Faces In Rock” section that year, but neither the album or its initial 2 singles charted. Finally, over a year later, the 3rd single from the disc, All I Wanna Do became a surprise smash hit, climbing to number 2 on the Billboard charts and carrying the album to the number 3 spot. By 1995, therefore, Sheryl was atop the rock world, the latest female artist to ascend to the throne of Queen of Rock. This soundboard recording captures Sheryl at the Beacon on March 17, 1995, 2 decades ago this very day, on tour in support of her debut disc. The set list, hoevevr, also hints at future success, as it includes 3 songs - Maybe Angels, Hard To Make A Stand and Love Is A Good Thing - which would be featured on her self-titled 2nd album, a disc which would go to #6 on the Billboard charts, sell over 3 million copies and win 2 Grammys!

On January 12, 1969, Led Zeppelin released their self-titled debut album, and rock and roll was never the same again. Over the next 10 years, Led Zep would become one of the immortal bands in rock history, as their fusion of rock and the blues launched what would eventually become known as heavy metal. Their first album featured songs that would become staples of their live performances for years to come, including Good Times Bad Times, Dazed and Confused, Black Mountain Side, and Communication Breakdown. While at the time, the album received largely negative reviews, today, critics are almost unanimous that the album was one of the finest debut discs ever recorded. The Times in London ranked it as the 41st greatest album of all time, while Rolling Stone magazine placed it in the #29 position on its list of the top 500 best albums. This soundboard recording, which provides 3 different sources for the show, captures the band on tour in support of it debut disc in Denmark on March 16, 1969, 46 years ago today.

Elton John – 1992-03-15 – Nashville (SBD)

As Elton John climbed the ladder to stardom in the early 1970’s, he was accompanied on the journey by a marvelous backing band - Davey Johnson on guitar, Nigel Olsen on drums and Dee Murray on base. The band played on toured with Elton during the height of his success. Even though Elton released Olsen and Murray form the band in 1976 as he was looking for a new sound, they eventually reunited with him in the early 1980’s, Johnson and Olsen continue to play with Elton to this very day. Dee Murray, however, after being stricken with skin cancer, died of a stroke at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, in Nashville, Tennessee on January 15, 1992. He was only 45 years old. Elton John, stricken with grief at the loss of his band mate and friend, played two tribute concerts at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville to raise money to help support Murray’s family. This soundboard recording captures one of those shows, from March 15, 1992, 23 years ago today. Download this one and take a moment to mourn the loss of a very talented musician way before his time.

On January 5, 1969, Creedence Clearwater Revival released their 2nd album, entitled Bayou Country. The disc would climb to 37 on the Billboard charts. The single, Proud Mary, backed by Born on The Bayou, would rise to #2 on the billboard charts. Creedence would eventually have 4 more singles reach #2 on the charts but never had a chart topper. As such, CCR hold s the record for having the most songs to hit the second position without ever scoring a #1 single. In any event, this soundboard recording captures the band on tour in support of its 2nd album in San Francisco on March 14, 1969, 46 years ago today.

Bruce Cockburn - 1997-03-13 - Hamburg Germany (FM) 

Bruce Cockburn was born in Canada in 1945, and established a strong following in that country after he began his musical career. He didn’t have much impact in the US until 1980 when his single, Wondering Where The Lions Are, went to #21 on the Billboard charts. His 1984 album Stealing Fire, produced the well know singles Lovers In A Dangerous Time and If I Had A Rocket Launcher. While I owned that disc, I soon lost touch with Cockburn’s music, moving on to other bands. I reconnected with his material, however, in the early 1990s, thanks to Jerry Garcia. At a concert at Madison Square Garden in November 1991, I heard Garcia play a wonderful tune called Waiting On A Miracle. Knowing it wasn’t a Jerry original, I did some research, and lo and behold, learned it was written by Cockburn about the revolution in Nicaragua. As long time readers of this blog know, I have always credited the Dead for introducing me to a host of music and styles that I might never otherwise learned about. This FM broadcast captures Cockburn on March 12, 1997, 18 years ago, in Hamburg. If you’re not familiar with his work, download this give it a listen - I think you’ll be very surprised and pleased.

In 1994, The Stones released the album Voodoo Lounge, their first album since Steel Wheels, 5 years earlier. It was also their first album on Virgin Records, and the first without Bill Wyman. Voodoo Lounge met with critical acclaim, as many writers called it a return to the glory days of Exile on Main Street and Some Girls. The disc rose to #2 on the charts in the US and won the Grammy for best rock album. Of course, the Stones embarked on a monstrous world wide tour in support of the album. This soundboard captures them near the end of the tour, 2 decades ago today, March 12 1995, in Tokyo, Japan. The concert features several cuts from Voodoo Lounge, along with a host of Stones classics! Enjoy!

In 1999, the Pretenders released their 7th studio album, entitled ¡Viva El Amor! Which is Spanish for Long Live Love. The album’s cover photo of Chrissie Hynde was taken by Linda Eastman shortly before she passed away in 1998. While not as successful as the band’s prior disc, Last Of The Independents, Viva El Amor generally received good reviews, including a 4 star rating from Melody Maker and an A- grade from Robert Christgau. This soundboard recording captures the band on tour in the US in support of the album on March 11, 2000, 15 years ago today.

Nick Lowe - 2014-03-10 - Utrecht, Netherlands (HQ Aud)

Long time readers of this blog know that I’m a big fan of Nick Lowe. In album, Pure Pop for Now People, was one that went on my turntable and never came off. I was even more impressed by it when I found out Lowe came up with 2 creative titles for the same disc! The album had been released as Jesus of Cool in the UK, but fears that the religious reference might offend US audiences forced Lowe to re-title it as Pure Pop in the states. In any event, his creativity, bent for satire, and ability to reinvent tunes as been a hallmark of Lowe’s career. For example, Shake and Pop, is basically the same song as They Called It Rock, just with different lyrics for the chorus. Heart, an up tempo tunes when done by Rockpile, was slowed down and released on one of Lowe's solo discs. This high quality audience from the Netherlands from March 10, 2014, just a year ago today, covers the entire 5 decade musical career of the man who still is the Jesus of Cool.

Neil Diamond - 1976-03-09 - Sydney, Australia (FM)

Incredibly, in late 1972, soon after the 10 night stand at The Greek Theater in Los Angeles that yielded the legendary live disc Hot August Night, Neil Diamond took an almost 4 year sabbatical from live performances. When he finally returned to the stage, it was in early 1976 with a tour of New Zealand and Australia. Diamond set attendance records everywhere he played with shows often selling out even before the dates were officially announced. By the time the three-week tour wrapped up in Sydney, Diamond had played to more than 150,000 fans. The tour was so popular, in fact, his final Sydney concert was broadcast live, as a gesture of thanks to everyone who had supported him and for those who had been unable to attend the shows. This FM broadcast captures that final, triumphant concert in Sydney on on March 9, 1976, 39 years ago today.
