In the early 1960s, Atlantic City, once a bustling resort destination, was in economic decline as tourists took advantage of cheap airfares to visit other destinations such as Miami Beach and Las Vegas. Some clubs in Atlantic City, however, continued to draw crowds, in large part due to their connections with famous celebrities and illegal gambling. Once such venue was the 500 Club, owned by Paul "skinny” D'Amato, a good friend of both Frank Sinatra and the Mafia. The club’s front room had a 1000 seat concert hall while its backroom housed a casino. Allegedly, many of the stars who performed on stage in the front room finished the night gambling in the back. In any event, Sinatra, because of his connection to D’Amato, performed at the 500 Club on numerous occasions, including August 25, 1962, 51 years ago this very day. If you've been with us throughout the month, you know that one of the reasons we chose to make May 1977 our theme is the incredible array of musical acts from countless genres that were all on tour at once. Well, here's another post that lends further credence to that point.  From May 17 to May 29, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, of Rat Pack fame,  headlined a series of shows at the Westchester Premier Theatre in Tarrytown, NY, about 45 minutes north of New York City.  Those shows took place about 6 months after one of the most famous moments in their long history together.  During the 1976 Labor Day Muscular Dystrophy Telethon,  Frank shocked host Jerry Lewis when he brought Dean on stage. Dean and Jerry hadn't spoken since their partnership broke up in 1956.  As Martin and Lewis embraced, the audience erupted in cheers and the phone banks lit up, resulting in one of the telethon's most profitable years.  Speaking of erupting in cheers, you might just do exactly that after downloading and listening to this soundboard of Sinatra and Martin, from May 25, 1977, 36 years ago today.
