Of all the band's to play Woodstock, few got as significant a career boost as Santana did. Their incendiary performance was featured in the movie and helped propel sales of their debut album, which would be released on August 30, 1969, to #4 on the Billboard charts. Incredibly, Sanatna almost didn't get to perform at Woodstock. When Bill Graham negotiated to have the Grateful Dead at the festival, he insisted that 1 of 2 other bands he managed be on the bill.The 2 bands in question were It's A Beautiful Day and Santana. After listening to recordings of both groups, Michael Laing, who had helped organize Woodstock, couldn't decide between them.  So he flipped a coin.  Santana won and the rest is history.

Santana was yet another band that just 2 weeks after Woodstock, played the Texas Pop Festival in Lewiston. This soundboard recording captures Santana’s set at Texas Pop from August 31, 1969, 5 decades ago today.

Led Zeppelin - 1969-08-31 - Lewisville, TX (SBD)

Led Zeppelin, who had taken the rock world by storm earlier in 1969 with their groundbreaking debut album, was invited to play Woodstock.  The band declined, opting to play 2 shows in the convention  center in Asbury Park instead the weekend of the festival The band's manager, Peter Grant apparently decided that headlining their own concert was preferable. explaining "I said no because at Woodstock we'd have just been another band on the bill."  Of course, that explanation seems a bit hollow given that the band played the Texas Pop Festival on August 31, 1969, a half century ago today, as captured in this soundboard recording.  That was just 2 weeks after Woodstock and they were just one of over a dozen bands on the bill!

When Janis Joplin hit the stage at Woodstock in August 1969, she was just one of a handful or artists who played both that festival and Monterrey Pop 2 years earlier. Others in that select group were Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Canned Heat, Ravi Shankar, Paul Butterfield, The Grateful Dead, Country Joe and The Jefferson Airplane.

This soundboard recording captures Janis 2 weeks after Woodstock, on August 30, 1969, 5 decades ago today.  She joined a host of other artists who went from playing in Bethel, NY to taking the stage in Lewiston TX.

Chicago - 1969-08-30 - Lewiston, TX (SBD)

Chicago, which at the time still known as the Chicago Transit Authority, had initially been signed on to play at Woodstock. Unfortunately for the band, however, they had a contract with concert promoter Bill Graham, which allowed him to move the date of Chicago's concerts at the Fillmore West. He rescheduled their Fillmore performances to the weekend of Woodstock, thus forcing the band to back out of the festival.  Graham's reason - he wanted to open a slot at the festival for one of his other bands, which turned out to be Santana!  Needless to say, Chicago, according to singer and bassist Peter Cetera, was "sort of peeved at him for pulling that one."

Chicago got a festival opportunity just 2 weeks after Woodstock, becoming one of a host of acts to play the Texas Pop Festival. This soundboard recording captures Chicago's set from August 30, 1969. a half century ago today.

The Rascals - 1988-08-29 - New York, NY (FM)

Woodstock organizers invited The Rascals to play the festival and were even offered the group a headlining spot. The band refused, however,  due to the fact that they were in the middle of recording a new album.

This FM Broadcast captures The Rascals in New York City, on August 29, 1988, 19 years after Woodstock and 31 years ago today. That year, 3 of the 4 original Rascals - Felix Cavaliere, Dino Danelli and Gene Cornish  - staged a brief reunion tour. Eddie Brigati was not part of tat tour, kept away by his tense relationship with Cavaliere.  You can find a fascinating article on that 1988 tour here. The duo would finally bury the hatchet in 2013, with a little help from Steve Van Zandt, reuniting the original foursome for the Broadway musical, The Rascals: Once Upon a Dream, More on that Broadway show here.

The Doors - 1970-08-29 - Isle Of Wight, UK (SBD)

Some sources claim that The Doors tuned down playing at Woodstock because Jim Morrison hated performing out doors.  In 1986, however, Ray Manzarek, explained that The Doors "never played at Woodstock because we were stupid and turned it down. We thought it would be a second class repeat of Monterry Pop Festival."

Perhaps missing Woodstock inspired the band to make up for their mistake by playing The Isle of Wight Festival in 1970. For 3 straight years, from 1968 to 1970, The Isle of Wight, a small island just off the south east coast of England, was the site of major rock festivals attracting some of the biggest names in rock music.  The 1968 festival was headlined by The Jefferson Airplane while the 1969 concert featured Bob Dylan and The Who.  The 1970 festival, however, has garnered the most attention, however, for two reasons.  First, Jimi Hendrix headlined the show, which in turn attracted additional acts such as Jethro Tull, Ten Years After, Chicago, The Doors, The Who, ELP, The Moody Blues, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, and Miles Davis.  Second, the event attracted over 600,000 people, making it the largest concert ever held until that point.  The massive nature of the event also meant it would be the last such show on the Isle of Wight for over 32 years. In 1971 the British Parliament passed the "Isle of Wight Act" preventing gatherings of more than 5,000 people on the island without a special license.  The 1970 Festival lasted from August 27th to August 30th, with the biggest names performing on the last 2 days.  For more details on the festival, go here. This soundboard recording captures The Doors' set at the Isle of Wight on August 29, 1970, 49 years ago today.  The whole show was played in almost total darkness as Jim Morrison refused to have spotlights on the ban (maybe really didn't like playing outdoors!!) One other note about this concert.First, the date of this show is often listed as either August 30 or 31, but my research seems to indicate that August 29 is correct.

The Band - 1983-08-27 - Osaka, Japan (SBD)

As 500,000 fans descended on Max Yagur's farm for 3 days of peace, love and music, The Band were actually living right near Woodstock! They had recorded their legendary debut album, Music From Big Pink in the area, the title being a reference to the house they were living in at the time. The Band took the stage at Woodstock around 10 pm on August 17, though their performance was not included in the movie due to a dispute over rights fees.

This soundboard recording captures The Band some 14 years after Woodstock, in Japan on August 27, 1983, 3 dozen years ago today. The group had just made its return to recording and touring, after a 7 year hiatus after the Las Waltz concert in November 1976.  The newly reformed Band, however, was without Robbie Robertson, who decided not to rejoin in order to pursue solo opportunities.

The Other Ones - 2000-08-25 - Mountain View CA (SBD)

The Grateful Dead hold the distinction of being the only band to play at 3 of the most famous rock festivals in US history - Woodstock, Monterrey Pop and Watkins Glenn. And while their long strange trip ended in 1995, with the death of Jerry Garcia, the surviving band members continued to carry the spirit of the 1960s into the 21st century. In 1998, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bruce Hornsby and Mickey Hart, supported by other musicians, formed The Other Ones, a very appropriate name taken from a Grateful Dead tune. In 2000, Lesh dropped out but Bill Kreutzman joined, while the 2002 version pf the Other Ones lost Hornsby but regained Lesh. In 2003, Weir, Lesh, Hart and Kreutzmann formed The Dead, and continued to play live together through Spring 2009. Then in fall 2009, Weir and Lesh formed Further, and toured for the next 5 years, before reuniting with Hart, Kreutzman and Hrornsby for the Fare The Well shows to celebrate the Grateful Dead's 50th anniversary in June 2015.  This soiunboar recording captures the first of the successor bands to the original Grateful Dead, The Other Ones, on August 25, 2000, 18 years ago this very day.

Hot Tuna - 2018-08-25 - Nederland, CO (SBD Matrix)

Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady of Hog Tuna appeared at Woodstock as part of the Jefferson Airplane's Sunday morning maniac music set! Interestingly, Jorma and Jack formed Hot Tuna in 1969, while still playing with the Airplane. On some nights, the duo would actually open for the Airplane,  pulling double duty in the process! 

This soundboard matrix recording captures Hot Tuna just a year ago today, and nearly a half century after taking the stage in Bethel, on August 25, 2018, in Colorado.  This one's electric - if you like your Jorma, acoustic, then come on back tomorrow!

Grateful Dead - 1972-08-24 - Berkeley, CA (SBD)

Earlier this month we brought you a show from the Grateful Dead right just a few weeks before their appearance at Woodstock.  Today, we bring you one from about 3 years after the festival, from August 24, 1972, 47 years ago today in Berkeley.  By the middle of 1972, the Dead had evolved in a number of ways as a band.  Pigpen's role had been greatly reduced, as the keyboardist was dealing with the effects of alcohol abuse that would take his life the following year.  Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux had joined the band, giving the group a different sound. The pure psychedelia of 1969 had been augmented with a host of new tunes, from the albums Workingman's Dead and American Beauty, that had a folk rock flavor.  Jams that once emerged from Pigpen tunes such as Alligator or Hard To Handle now sprung from songs such as Trucking or Playing In The Band. This soundboard recording captures the Dead during that transitional time on the 3rd night of a 4 night stand at The Berkeley Community Theater.  The band was in peak form that summer - the 2 shows after this one have been officially released, one of which is the legendary Veneta show from August 27, 1972!

The Byrds - 1970-08-23 - Los Angeles, CA (SBD)

The Byrds were invited, to play Woodstock, but chose not to participate, figuring it to be no different from any of the other music festivals that summer. The band was also concerned about money. As bassist John York remembers: "We were flying to a gig and Roger [McGuinn] came up to us and said that a guy was putting on a festival in upstate New York. But at that point they weren't paying all of the bands. He asked us if we wanted to do it and we said, 'No'. We had no idea what it was going to be. We were burned out and tired of the festival scene. So all of us said, 'No, we want a rest' and missed the best festival of all."

Interestingly, soon after that decision, York was replaced as the bass player in the band by Skipp Battin.  The new line up  - Roger McGuinn, Clarence White, Gene Parsons and Battin - became the longest tenured configuration of the band.  They also developed a reputation for being a formidable live act, honing their skills by touring relentlessly during a nearly 3 year stretch from September 1969 to July 1972.  This soundboard recording captures The Byrds a year after Woodstock, in Los Angeles on August 23, 1970, 49 years ago today. One note - this may not be the correct date. I have also seen this show posted as 08-22-1970, 05-23-1970, 01-01-1970 and even August 1969!  Whatever the date, its great music from a great band!

Jim Hendrix - 1968-08-23 - Flushing Queens, NY (VG Aud)

One of the most iconic memories of Woodstock is that of Jimi Hendrix playing the Star Spangled Banner as [art of his set to close the festival.  Of course, Jimi wasn't playing for a crowd "half a million strong" but rather about 20,000 folks who remained at Bethel on Monday morning.  The festival had run so long that most folks were gone before the legendary guitarist took the stage.  One other note - this wasn't the fist time Jami played our national anthem in concert - it had actually become a regular part of his set list.  For example, he played it at this show, as well as at both shows at the Royal Albert Hall in February 1969.

This very good audience recording captures Jim about a year before Woodstock, in Flushing, Queens in New York City, 51 years ago today.  While the sound quality isn't up to our usual standards here at So Many Roads, I'm posting this show for 2 reasons. First, how can you have a month dedicated to Woodstock without a show from Jimi. Second, in 1968, I was living in Flushing, just a subway stop away from where this show was held, in Flushing Meadows Park, site of the 1964 Worlds' Fair and now home of the US Tennis Open.  Of course, I was all of 9 at the time and had no idea about Woodstock or Jimi, though I most certainly did know who the Beatles were!

Simon & Garfunkel - 1968-08-23 - Hollywood CA (SBD)

Simon & Garfunkel were invited to play Woodstock, but declined because they were working on their new album.  That disc, Bridge Over Troubled Waters, released in January 1970, would be both their masterpiece and their swan song, as the duo broke up later that year.  While they would have several reunion tours, they would never again release a studio disc.

A year prior to Woodstock, Simon & Garfunkel were riding a wave of critical and commercial success. The film, The Graduate, directed by Mike Nichols and starring Dustin Hoffman in his breakthrough role, featured the duo’s music, especially the now iconic tune, Mrs. Robinson. The soundtrack to the film went to number 1 on the Billboard charts, knocking The Beatles’ White Album out of the top spot! In March 1968, S&G released the album Bookends, which included the top 25 hits A Hazy Shade of Winter, At The Zoo and America, as well as a full version of the number 1 single Mrs. Robinson. Bookends, which also went to #1 on the charts, was a more complex album than some of the duo’s earlier work, with many of the songs dealing with the themes of old age and loss. Music from The Graduate soundtrack and Bookends was featured prominently in S&G’s set list when they went on tour that summer, as evidenced in this soundboard recording from the Hollywood Bowl from August 23, 1968, 51 years ago today.! This show was recorded by Al Kooper and was at one point intended for a live release, which unfortunately never materialized. Fortunately, you can download it right here and enjoy S&G at their best.

The Beatles - 1964-08-22 - Vancouver, Canada (FM)

The organizers of the Woodstock Festival had every intention of having the biggest musical acts in the world play the event, and that meant making every effort to get The Beatles.  Most sources on the internet concur that the Woodstock team reached out to John Lennon about having The Beatles play. The story gets a bit messy, however, after that  Some sites simply say the band turned down the offer because except for their rooftop performance in January 1969, they hadn't played live in over 3 years. Other sources claim that Lennon, who was in Canada at the time. couldn't commit to playing with his band mates since as the Nixon administration wouldn't let him back into the US.  Still other sites claim that Lennon told the Woodstock organizers The Beatles would only play the festival if the The Plastic Ono Band, featuring Yoko, also got an invite.  The organizers politely declined that deal! Whatever the real reason, The Fab Four didn't make an appearance at Woodstock.

Five years earlier, on August 19, 1964, The Beatles launched the first North American Tour with a show at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, the same city ironically where they would conclude their final tour in 1966. Beatlemania was in full swing and their arrival in San Francisco airport was met by over 9000 screaming fans. Three days later, on August 22, 1964, 55 years ago today, the Fab Four played their first ever concert in Canada at in front of 20,261 fans at the Empire Stadium in Vancouver. This FM recording, originally broadcast on local radio station CKNW captures the Beatles’ entire 30 minute, 11 song set. Please note that the while this is a copy of a radio broadcast, it is over a a half a century old, so the sound quality is most certainly not perfect. That said, it’s the Beatles, which makes it a must have for your collection.

As mentioned in our August 4 post featuring Eric Clapton, Blind Faith skipped Woodstock, instead playing a show in Santa Barbara.  EC wanted to play at Bethel, but Steve Winwood and Ginger Baker out voted him.  Dissension rained in Blind Faith, and by the end of the summer, the band would be no more.

This soundboard recording captures Steve Winwood out solo nearly 2 decades after Woodstock, in Mansfield MA, on August 21, 1988, 31 years ago today.

Joe Cocker - 1983-08-20 - St. Goarshausen,  Germany (FM)

At Woodstock on August 17, 1969, Joe Cocker did what others could only dream of, namely take a tune by the most famous and arguably greatest rock band of all time and make it his very own. Cocker closed his set with a cover of The Beatles' With A Little Help From My Friends, turning Ringo's sing along into a "gospel-flavored soulful spectacle and painting Joe as its mad maestro." Cocker’s recorded version of the song went on to hit #1 on the UK charts, was used as the theme song for hit TV show The Wonder Years, and is ranked as one of the greatest cover versions of all time, up there with Jimi's rendition of Dylan's All Along The Watchtower.

This FM broadcast captures Cocker at another Festival, the Rockpalast Loreley Open Air Festival in St. Goarshausen,  Germany on August 20, 1983, 14 years after Woodstock and 3 dozen years ago today.  And yes, he plays With A Little Help From My Friends!

Bruce Springsteen - 1978-08-19 - Philadelphia, PA (SBD)

In 1969, Bruce Springsteen formed Steel Mill, a band that also included 3 future members of the E-Street Band, Vini Lopez, Danny Federici and Steve Van Zandt. (Note - the band was originally called Child, but when they found out that another local group was also using that name, they changed it to Steel Mill). Steel Mill became quite a popular act on the Jersey Shore, and some sources say they attracted the attention of the Woodstock organizers, who invited them to play the festival. Their manager turned it down, citing they had local club dates that they were contractually committed to.  Who knows, if Bruce and Steel Mill had gone, maybe his legendary encounter with Janis Joplin would have  happened sooner - go here for details!

In any event, this soundboard recording captures Springsteen some 9 years after Woodstock, when he had grown from Jersey Shore legend to rock superstar. In May 23, 1978, Bruce launched a 115 show tour that would last through the end of the year in support of his new album, Darkness On The Edge Of Town, which was released on June 2. Darkness was Springsteen’s first disc since Born To Run In 1975; the 3 years wait the result of a legal battle with his former manager, Mike Appel. All 10 songs from the album found their way into the Bruce’s set list at some point during the tour, with Badlands taking the prominent role of show opener. Perhaps the long wait for the album had increased the level of emotion among Bruce’s loyal fans, as the shows on this tour are often described as intense. Springsteen biographer Dave Marsh wrote, for example, “The screaming intensity of those '78 shows are part of rock and roll legend in the same way as Dylan's 1966 shows with the Band, the Rolling Stones' tours of 1969 and 1972, and the Who's Tommy tour of 1969: benchmarks of an era.” This soundboard recording captures Bruce on August 19, 1978, 41 years ago today in Philadelphia. Woodstock - 1969-08-18 - Bethel, NY (SBD + AUD)

It’s our 4th and final day of music from Woodstock. On Monday morning, August 18, 1969, Jimi Hendrix played his first live gig since the breakup of The Experience in July of that year. He also turned in one the most well known performances in rock history when he played the Star Spangled Banner near the close of his set. Incredibly,less than 30,000 saw this performance, as it carried into Monday morning, by which point most of the half a million string had headed home.  Those of you following this blog know it was not the first time Jimi had played our national anthem, as it was included in several other concerts that year (see our Jimi post later this month for more details). This version of the Star Spangled Banner, however, played near the very end of a rock festival which symbolized the changes our country was going through in the late 60’s, became a lightning rod for controversy and debate. Exactly what message was Jimi trying to deliver? No one will ever know, but one thing is for certain, Jimi’s rendition is truly an iconic moment. Woodstock - 1969-08-15 - Bethel, NY (SBD)

It was billed as an Aquarian Exposition (this is the dawning of the age of Aquarius), as 3 days of Peace and Music. It became 4 days of Peace, Music and Mud and closed the NY Thruway. As the song says, by the time “we got to Woodstock, we were half a million strong, and everywhere was a song and a celebration”. The anti war, hippie, flower power, anti-establishment counter cultural revolution that was brewing among the youth of America was on full display at Yasgur’s Farm. More than anything, it was the moment that defined a generation, and continues to resonate with people a half century later. Michael Lang, one of the four young men who produced the festival, once said "That's what means the most to me – the connection to one another felt by all of us who worked on the festival, all those who came to it, and the millions who couldn't be there but were touched by it." More has probably been written about Woodstock than almost any other musical event in history, and I most certainly could never do justice to describing the events, emotions, impact and legacy of those 4 days. What I can do, however, is post some of the incredible music that was made at Woodstock in 1969. Thanks to our friends at the Woodstock project, we can bring you 33 CDs filled with music,  interviews, newscasts, and much more. Today we have 7 CDs from Friday, August 15, 1969, 5 decades ago today, featuring among others, Richie Havens and Joan Baez.
