This excellent audience recording captures the Grateful Dead in Cincinnati on June 30, 1986, 3 decades ago this very day. Just about a week later, after a July 7 show in Washington DC, Jerry Garcia would lapse into a near fatal diabetic coma, which lasted for 5 days. When he finally recovered, he needed to re-teach himself how to play guitar!

This soundboard recording captures the one time Declan Patrick MacManus at that most recent appearance, on June 29, 2013, just 3 years ago today.

Dire Straits - 1992-06-28 - Basel, Switzerland (SBD) 

After disbanding Dire Straits in 1988, Mark Knopfler reformed the band three years later in 1991. The released the album on Every Street later that year, which sold over 8 million copies and went # 1 on the UK charts while reaching #12 on the Billboard charts in the US. Despite that success, by comparison to their prior release Brothers In Arms, the new disc was both a critical and commercial disappointment. The band launched a massive 300 show, 2 year tour in support of the album. The strain of that tour, however, proved to be too much for the band, and in its aftermath, Knopfler dissolved Dire Straits for the 2nd, and final, time. This soundboard recording captures the band on that final run on June 28, 1992, 2 dozen years ago today, in Switzerland. Download this one to hear Dire Straits on their final tour before Mark Knopfler launched his solo career 4 years later.

July's Theme At So Many Roads

Given that this summer we're celebrating 40 years since my first concert on August 15, 1976, our July theme is a easy one - Band's I've Seen Live - Part 1.  We'll continue that theme in  August as well, with every concert in those 2 months being from a band that I've seen live at some point between 1976 and today.

One note - I  saw the Grateful Dead so many times that in order to do that life long obsession justice, I'm posting at least 1 (and maybe more) show from each of the 3 decades I saw them - the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.

By the way, as summer is a very busy time for me, the write ups in each post will be short and sweet given my hectic schedule.

Pink Floyd - 1977-06-27 - Boston, MA (HQ Aud)

Spring 1977 was an incredible time for rock music, with some of the largest names in the business, representing numerous genres, all on tour at once. Pink Floyd was one of the acts on the road at that time, promoting their latest album, Animals as part on the In The Flesh Tour. The tour featured the famous character inflatables puppets, a pyrotechnic "waterfall" and one of the biggest and most elaborate stages to date, including umbrella-like canopies that would raise from the stage to protect the band from the elements. The set list each night consisted of playing the entire Animals disc, then the entire Wish You Were here album, and ending with encores from Dark Side of The Moon. Throughout the tour, Roger Waters demonstrated all sorts of aggressive behavior, from arguing with the lighting crew in NY, to yelling at the audiences for talking during quieter numbers, to even spitting in the face of a fan. Waters began to realize that fame had alienated him from his audience, which became part of the inspiration behind Pink Floyd's next project, The Wall. Despite the difficulties on this tour, the band's playing was, for the most part superb as evident in this  high quality audience tape from June 27, 1977, 39 years ago today, from Boston, captures one of those nights when not only was the playing great, but also Waters, Gilmour and company were all in fine spirits. In fact, Waters ends this show saying "The perfect end to the perfect day, good night and God bless".

The Pretenders - 1994-06-24 - Glastonbury, UK (FM)

The 1994 Glastonbury Festival ran from June 24 to June 26.  The Pretenders were the closing act on the NME Stage on Friday June 24, 1994, 22 years ago today, as captured in this FM Broadcast. Just about a month earlier, the band had released its 6th album, Last of the Independents. The disc yielded the single I'll Stand By You, which went to #16 on the Billboard charts in the US, and included a cover of Bob Dylan's Forever Young.  The album marked the return to the band of drummer Martin Chambers, who had been fired by Chrissie Hynde, 8 years earlier.

Robert Plant - 2006-06-23 - Beacon Theatre, NY (SBD)

A decade ago this very day, Robert Plant was the headliner at the Benefit For Arthur Lee concert at New York's Beacon Theatre, a show which raised money for Lee's medical expenses from his bout with leukemia. Plant was joined by Ian Hunter during his set. As captured in this soundboard recording, Plant performed thirteen songs – five from Arthur Lee & Love, five from his days with Led Zeppelin, and three others, including a duet with Ian Hunter on For What Its Worth.  The former Led Zep front man told the audience of his great admiration for Arthur Lee, dating back to the mid-'60s. Unfortunately, Lee died of his illness just six weeks after the concert.

On June 22, 1963, 53 years ago today, KFOX Radio in Los Angeles presented Country Night at The Bowl, a star studded extravaganza featuring some of the biggest names in Country Music.  The line up that night included Walter Brennan, George Jones, June Carter (not yet married to Johnny), and Loretta Lynn, just to name a few, and the entire evening was topped off by set from the Man In Black, This FM broadcast captures that historic performance by Johnny Cash, just 5 songs  long but featuring 2 of his best know tunes, Ring of Fire and Folsom prison Blues.

Brinsley Schwarz - 1974-06-19 - Cardiff, UK (SBD)

Brinsley Schwarz was a cult phenomena. Fronted by Nick Lowe and named after their lead guitarist, the band developed a rabid following in the UK and became the subject of legendary hype in the United States.  Unfortunately, critical acclaim and loyal fans never did translate into chart success for Brinsley Schwarz and they would eventually disband in 1975. Their last album in 1974, however, served as a launching pad for another band that achieved legendary cult status. Dave Edmunds would produce that disc, and he would go on to partner with Lowe to form Rockpile! This rare soundboard recording captures BrinsleySchwarz on June 19, 1974, 42 years ago today, just about a month before the release of that final album. So, is Edmunds playing alongside The Brinsleys at this gig? The picture that accompanied this bootleg shows Lowe and Edmunds side by side on stage. Edmunds' 1975 album Subtle As A Flying Mallet lists some live tracks with Brinsley Schwarz, all from Cardiff, the location where this soundboard was recorded. I couldn't really tell from listening. In August 1993, Billy Joel released his 12th, and what turned out to be his final, studio album of rock music (though over 2 decades later, he can still sell out 12 shows at Madison Square Garden in NY, 1 a month for every month of 2014). The disc, entitled River Of Dreams, went to #1 on The Billboard Charts in the US. Joel received 4 Grammy nominations for the album, which sold over 5 million copies. Joel launched a world tour in September 1993 in support of the album, which ran until December 1994. This soundboard recording, however, captures him before the album release and tour, at a rehearsal show at The Fountinebleu Hotel In Miami on June 18, 1993, 23 years ago today.

The first day of the three-day Hultsfred Festival 2004 featured The Pixies, PJ Harvey, Meshuggah, Bright Eyes The Roots and country music legend, Kris Kristofferson. Reviews from the show glowing noted that "Now that Johnny Cash is no longer around, this Highwayman seems to be picking up the slack singing for the downtrodden. With only his guitar and harmonica, he put on a show that’s passionately forceful. Affable and heartfelt (”If you see any of my relatives, tell ‘em I wasn’t as drunk as I was the last time I was here”), the crowd couldn’t agree more."  Thsi soundboard recording captures that magnificent performance from June 17, 2003, a dozen years ago this very day.

On January 13, 2002, Country Music Television premiered a new series called Crossroads, which pairs country music artists with musicians from other music genres.  Often, the impromptu duos frequently traded off performing each others songs, while also dueting on some numbers.   Episode #5 of that series, as captured in the TV soundboard recording, from June 16, 2002, 14 years ago today, featured Willie Nelson paired with Sheryl Crow. The two opened the show with a duet on Jackson, doing their best impression of fellow Highwayman Johnny Cash and his wife June.

In 1999, after a long, 11 year separation, Bruce Springsteen, decided, to paraphrase the immortal words of John Belushi in The Blue Brothers, to put the band back back together. The Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band reunion tour launched in April 1999 and stretched until July 2000. On highpoint of the tour was a record sold-out, 15-show run at Continental Airlines Arena in New Jersey. Another was a 10-night, sold-out engagement at New York City's Madison Square Garden, including this show from 16 years ago today on June 15, 2000. At key points in each show, usually during Tenth Avenue Freezeout and his newest song, Land of Hope and Dreams, Springsteen played the role of preacher, calling on his disciples in the crowd to feel the healing power of the Ministry of Rock and Roll. Another special moment each night occurred during If I Should Fall Behind, a song written while Springsteen was away from the E Street band. With the band reunited, the song became a vow of togetherness, with Springsteen, wife Patti Scialfa, Steve Van Zandt, Nils Lofgren, and The Big Man, Clarence Clemons each singing a verse, promising to wait for each other. Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - 2008-06-13 - Columbia, MD (SBD)

It's an unlikely duo, to say the least.  Robert Plant was the howling voice of Led Zeppelin, the masters of hard rock. Alison Krauss is a bluegrass icon, know for her angelic, hypnotic vocals.  Yet, when they came together in the studio in late 2007, with legendary producer T Bone Burnett, the result was magic.  Their album, Raising Sand, went to number 2 on the Billboard charts, and won the Grammy for Album of the Year, along with 4 other Grammys.  The critics also loved the disc, with the Village Voice, for example, writing that it was "powerfully evocative" and "utterly foreign, oddly familiar, and deeply gratifying". Chicago - 1974-06-12 - Louisville, KY (SBD)

In late 1973, when Chicago went into the studio to record their 7th album, the band initially intended to record a pure jazz record. During the sessions, however, some members of the band grew leery about the commercial risk of the endeavor. The group compromised, turning the project into a double album that incorporated jazz music along with some traditional rock tunes. The album, Chicago VII, was released on March 11, 1974 and went to the top of the Billboard charts. Three singles from the album, (I've Been) Searchin' So Long, Call On Me and Wishing You Were Here, all cracked the top 15 on the Billboard singles chart. This soundboard recording captures Chicago on tour in support of their double album in Louisville on June 12, 1974, 42 years ago today. On August 7, just about 2 months from now, I'll be going to see Paul McCartney at Met Life Stadium, the 7th time I've seen Sr Paul live.  So, today, we'll bring you a high quality audience tape of the first time I saw Macca, at Giant Stadium, the predecessor to Met Life, on June 11, 1993, 23 years ago today.  On February 18 1993, Paul McCartney launched his New World Tour, which stretched until December and saw Sir Paul, wife Linda, Paul "Wix" Wickens, Blair Cunningham, Robbie McIntosh, and Hamish Stuart visit North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Australia. McCartney was touring in support of his latest album, Off The Ground, so the set list featured 6 songs from the disc - Hope of Deliverance, Peace In The Neighborhood, C'mon People, Biker Like An Icon, Looking For Changes and the title track. The new tunes, however, were not the reason thousands of people flocked to these concerts. No, most folks, like my wife and I  went to hear the "cute Beatle" reach into his illustrious past. We were not disappointed. From the opening Drive My Car to the closing Hey Jude, over half the set list was dedicated to Beatle tunes. Throw in a few Wings classics such as Band on The Run, Live and Let Die, My Love and the rarely played Another Day, and this was a night to remember. We didn't have the best seats -- not sure if there is any such thing as a good seat in a 60,000 seat stadium - but it hardly nattered. We knew every note and sang every word, knowing this was as close to the Beatles as we would ever get. And who knew at the time that it would be another 9 years before Paul would again tour. Fortunately, in recent years he has been on the road much more frequently, as he shows no signs of slowing down despite approaching his 74th birthday.

As we entered the 21st century, Jimmy Buffett had become far more than a musician. He was an entire industry. Under the Margaritaville brand name, he had launched stores, restaurants, liquors and record companies; just to name a few of his ventures. Yet, while his business interests had become more diverse, Jimmy continued to play live for his loyal followers, affectionately know as Parrot Heads. In June 2000, he launched the Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays Tour, a reference to both the title of his 1999 live album and to his laid back concert schedule.  His notes to the album included the following “On earlier voyages, we ran at a lot faster speed and stopped at a thousand ports along the way. These days, however, we just play Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. When our ship comes in, the party begins.” This soundboard recording captures Jimmy and The Coral Reefer Band on night 3 of the tour in Camden, NJ on June 10, 2000, 16 years ago today. On May 20, 1997, John Fogerty released the album Blue Moon Swamp, his first studio recording in 11 years. The disc climbed to #37 on the Billboard charts and certified gold. Rolling Stone gave the album a 4 star review and in 1998, it won a Grammy for best Rock Album. After years out of the spotlight, John Fogerty was back. He went on tour in support of the album the same month it was released. In December 1997, he recorded a live album, Premonition, then continued to tour well into 1998 in support of both discs. This soundboard recording captures Fogerty on June 9, 1997, 19 years ago today, promoting the new disc on Good Morning America.

U2 -  1981-06-08 - Geleen, Netherlands (FM)

Launched in 1970, the Pinkpop Festival is now the oldest and longest running annual rock festival in the world. The festival is usually held on Pentecost weekend, hence the name - pinksteren is the Dutch word for Pentacost while pop of course, references music,  The festival was originally held in Geleen, then after a one year stint in 1987 in Baarlo , moved to its new home in Landgraaf, The 12th edition of the Pinkpop festival featured a host of up and coming new wave acts, including Madness, UB40, Ian Dury and U2.  U2 had relased their debut album, Boy in late 1980, eand several tunes from the disc,, such as The Ocean, 11 O'Clock Tick Tock and I Will Follow garned significant radio airplay.  That said, the jury was still out as to whether the band would make it big.  For example, one review in the New Musical Express wrote that "U2 who are basically little more than nonsense... This four-piece Irish group are nothing more than a very traditional hard rock outfit with a singer -- one Bono by name -- who'd love to be Rod Stewart, in imitation of whom he moves much of the time, when he isn't busy imitating the inevitable Iggy, of course...U2 are really quite awful, though the young people -- particularly the mutant punks -- at the pop concert seemed to enjoy their tired old fakery."  Nothing in that review gave any indication that U2 would one day be the the biggest and best band in the world.  Download this FM Broadcast from Pinkpop from June 8, 1981, 35 years ago today, to hear U2 play their first major festival.

Rockpile - 1978-06-07 - San Francisco (FM)

In England, before there was punk rock and new wave, there was pub rock. Part pop, part r&b, part country, pub rock, like its descendants, had little use for the over blown nature of the progressive rock scene. At the forefront of the pub rock movement was the band Brinsley Schwarz, named after their guitarist, but driven by writer, vocalist and bassist, Nick Lowe. Lowe would go on to found Rockplie in conjunction with Dave Edmunds, a band that took pub rock and combined it with roackabilly power pop and new wave. When Rockpile started touring together in 1976, its co-leaders, Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds, were signed to different record labels. That prevented the band from releasing an album under its own name. Instead, they were forced to release albums either under Lowe’s name, such as Jesus of Cool and Labor of Lust, or Edmund’s banner, such as Trax on Wax and Repeat When Necessary. In fact, Jesus of Cool and Heart of The City both featured the same version of the song Heart of The City, but on the former album, the track featured Lowe’s lead vocals while on the latter, the record company dubbed in Edmund’s voice! Graham Parker - 1979-06-06 - Hempstead, NY (FM) 

In March 1979, Graham Parker released Squeezing Out Sparks, which would become the signature album of his career. The album was a spectacular critical success. Robert Christgau called it "an amazing record" and gave it an A+. The Village Voice voted it album of the year. The album's critical reputation has continued to grow since its release over 3 decades ago. Trouser Press called it "his toughest, leanest and most lyrically sophisticated LP" while Allmusic cited it as his "finest album, a masterful fusion of pub rock classicism, new wave pop, and pure vitriol". In 2003, Rolling Stone placed Squeezing Out Sparks at number 335 on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Filled with songs such as Discovering Japan, Local Girls, and Love Gets You Twisted, the disc showcases Graham Parker as one of New Wave’s 3 Angry Young Men, along with contemporaries Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson.
