Freedomfest - 1988-06-11 - London, UK (FM)

The 1980s saw a resurgence of benefit concerts/festivals where rock artists used the power of their music and popularity to spur social & political change. While Live Aid may be the best known of those efforts, it was far from the only one. On June 11, 1988, 37 years ago today as captured in this FM broadcast, Wembly Stadium hosted Freedomfest, officially know as the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute, a concert celebrating the life and sacrifices of the anti-apartheid revolutionary and freedom fighter. The show was also designed to help pressure the Apartheid government of South Africa to release him from jail. The concert featured dozens of musical acts and entertainers, including Eric Clapton, Dire Straits, Stevie Wonder, Sting, Tracy Chapman, Joe Cocker, Jackson Brown, and Steve Van Zandt (who appropriately played the song, Sun City, protesting Apartheid), just to name some. The show was broadcast live to 67 countries and an audience of over 600 million people. The political pressure Freedomfest place on South Africa had the intended results - 20 months after the show, Mandella was released from prison, having spent 27 years in jail. By 1994, apartheid ceased in South Africa, and Mandella was elected President of the country, a nation which would become a multicultural democracy under his leadership.

1988: In November 1987, Stevie Wonder released his 21st studio album, entitled Characters.  Reception  to the album was mixed. On the one hand, critics didn't love it, and the album became his first since 1972's Music On My Mind not to reach the top 10 on the Billboard album charts, peaking at #17.  On the other hand, it debuted at #1 on the Top R&B Albums chart, staying there for for seven weeks, and spawned six singles including three that hit the Billboard Hot 100 - Get It, a duet with Michale Jackson at #80,Skeletons at #19 and the ballad You Will Know at #77.  Wonder also received 3 Grammy nominations for the album, through he did not win any.  This soundbaord recording captures him on tour in support of the album about a year after its release, in Atlanta on November 28, 1988, 3 dozen years ago today.

Stevie Wonder was inducted into the Rock & Roll  Hall Of Fame in 1989.  That class also included the Rolling Stones, the late great Otis Redding, The Temptations and Dion. 

This soundboard recording captures Stevie at Winterland in San Francisco on March 2, 1973, 51 years ago today, right around the time he was beginning a run of singles and albums that cemented his hall of fame status. In late 1972, he released the album Talking Book, which went to #3 on the Billboard charts and in 1973, yielded two #1 singles, Superstition and You Are The Sunshine Of My Life. Over the next 4 years, Wonder would release the albums Innervisions, Fulfillingness' First Finale, and Songs In The Key of Life. The first of that trio would hit #4 on the Billboard charts, while the next 2 would both climb to #1.  All 3 would win the Grammy for Album of The Year! Those discs produced 7 top 20 singles, including 3 more #1's, You Haven't Done Nothing, I Wish and Sir Duke.

The 1989 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class featured the star power of the Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, the late great Otis Redding, The Temptations and Dion.  Those present rocked the house, with help from some special guests. Tina Turner, on hand to induct Phil Spector, performed River Deep, Mountain High and provided backing vocals for Dion on The Wanderer.  Bruce Springsteen, who was a regular at almost very one of these early induction ceremonies, paid tribute to 1987 inductee Roy Orbison, who died just a weeks earlier.

In Spring 1992, Steveie Wonder launched a 9 country, 15 city tour of Europe.  For that run, Wonder enlisted Henry Panion, a University of Alabama at Birmingham professor and Grammy Award winning gospel musician, to serve as the conductor for his backing orchestra. Panion got the job through his work with the city orchestra in Columbus, Ohio. His arrangement of the gospel standard O Happy Day so impressed Leslie Dunner of the Detroit Symphony that Dunner recommended Panion to Wonder.  This soundboard recording captures Wonder during that European tour, in Spain, on May 22, 1992, 31 uears ago today.

On August 6, 1987, 35 years ago today, Stevie Wonder played a benefit concert, as captured in this soundboard recording, that raised over $1.5 million to help fight the disease, Retinitis Pigmentosa. Wonder had a personal connection to the cause as his e;emntary school teacher was afflicted by the disease. The show also touched on other social causes important to Stevie - he dedicated his song Frontline to Vietnam veterans and his Oscar-winning I Just Called to Say I Love You to the then imprisoned South African activist Nelson Mandela. An interesting note about the show itself - Wonder had programmed all the instrumentation into a computer before the show, which gave him total control over the music. For example, he used the technology to experiment with several different computerized tempo settings on My Cherie Amour before settling on the right one.

A year ago this very day, on April 18, 2020, dozens of musical performers donated their time for a virtual concert, called  to raise money for the World Health Organization and the front line workers fighting COVID-19. Here in the US, we were about a month into the pandemic, in lock down, hoping that the summer would bring an end to the dreaded disease. Unfortunately, the response to the diseas became politicized, leading to over 500,000 deaths by year end. Economic hardships have impacted millions, as have the mental health challenges of isolation and loneliness. Remote working, virtual learning, mask wearing and so much more have become part of our lives.  The onset of 2021, has brought hope, however, as newly developed vaccines are being distributed throughout the nation.  Maybe soon some normalcy will return, and we'll be able to return to some degree, to life before COVID, including attending live shows rather than watching them on a screen.  This webcast recording captures highlights of that very first virtual concert, including performances by Paul McCartney, Elton, John, Stevie Wonder, the Rolling Stones & Sheryl Crow. Viet Nam Veterans Benefit Concert - 1987-07-04 - Landover, MD (FM)

On July 4, 1987, 32 years ago today, the Capitol Center in Landover MD, just down the road from Washington DC hosted a star studded concert to raise money for homeless Viet Nam veterans, as captured in this FM broadcast.  CSN, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Linda Ronstadt, and many more played this nationally televised event, which was entitled Welcome Home.  No performer, though had more of an impact than John Fogerty. According to the notes that accompanied this tape, during rehearsals, Fogerty played only solo material, as he was still in a dispute with his record company over his recordings with Creedence. When he hit the stage, he seemed intent on continuing to ignore his past, as the band began playing Old Man Down The Road. And then it happened, one of those magical moments that occur just once in a musical lifetime. Fogerty stopped, huddled up with his band mates, and then launched into Born on The Bayou! The rest of the set was all CCR classics, including Bad Moon Rising. Who’ll Stop The Rain, Down On The Corner and Proud Mary, just to name a few. From that show forward, CCR material would again grace every Fogerty concert! Interestingly, during his set, Fogerty made a heartfelt speech asking the Veterans in the audience and listening at home to let go their past, to move past the pain, and to move forward with th lives.  He may just as well as been talking about his own life! Stevie Wonder - 1975-03-13 - Toronto, Canada (SBD)

Perhaps no artist's star burned brighter in the 1970s than that of Stevie Wonder. Between October 1972 and October 1979, he released 5 albums, all of which cracked the top 5 on the Billboard charts,  Two of those, Fulfillingness' First Finale in July 1974 and Songs In The Key of Life in September 1976, went all the way to number 1. While Innervisions, released in 1973, "only" reached the #4 spot on the charts, many critics and fans cite it as  perhaps his finest work. The album spawned two hit singles in Higher Ground, which went to #4 on the Billboard charts, and Living In The City, which reached the #8 position. Innervisions won three Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year. The album’s lasting impact is evidenced by it being ranked #23 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.  This soundboard recording captures Stevie on tour in 1975 after the releases of Innervisions and Fulfillingness' First Finale, on March 13, 1975, 44 years ago today.  In some ways, it was a miracle he was up on stage. Just 3 days after release of Innervisions, Stevie was involved in a devastating car accident in North Carolina, while traveling north after a concert the day before. The accident left him in a coma for 4 days and had fans wondering if Innervisions would be the last work from this legend. Fortunately, he recovered, though he did lose his sense of smell as a result of the injuries he suffered.

Stevie Wonder - 2017-09-23 - New York, NY (FM)

On September 23, 2017, just a year ago today, Stevie Wonder headlined the 6th annual Global Citizens Festival, held on the Great Lawn in Central Park in New York City. Over 60,00 people attended the event, whose overriding goal is to end extreme poverty by the year 2030. The festival steered clear for the most part of politics, though Wonder did open the show by taking a Knee for America” in support if Colin Kapernick, whose protests have sparked a flurry of controversy for the NFL. He quickly moved on to the music, however, playing a crowd-pleasing set filled with songs suited for the day’s purpose and messages, such as Higher Ground, Don’t You Worry About a Thing, Living for the City, and Superstition, as captured in this FM Broadcast.

2005 - On October 18, 2005, Stevie Wonder released, A Time To Love, his first album of new material in over a decade. The disc went to #5 on the Billboard charts, his highest charting album since n Square Circle some 20 years earlier. Three weeks later, he was in London, at the legendary Abbey Roads studio, performing live for BBC radio. That FM broadcast, on November 9, 2005, featured 2 songs from the new disc, but primarily was a retrospective of his legendary career. It would be hard to argue that any black artist had more influence on rock music in the mid 1970s than Stevie Wonder.  In fact, Wonder may have been the most influential musician period, regardless of race, color or gender. In late 1972, he released the album Talking Book, which went to #3 on the Billboard charts and in 1973, yielded two #1 singles, Superstition and You Are The Sunshine Of My Life. Over the next 4 years, Wonder would release the albums Innervisions, Fulfillingness' First Finale, and Songs In The Key of Life.  The first of that trio would hit #4 on the Billboard charts, while the last 2 would both climb to #1.  All 3 would win the Grammy for Album of The Year! Those discs produced 7 top 20 singles, including 3 more #1's, You Haven't Done Nothing, I Wish and Sir Duke. This soundboard recording captures Wonder just as You Are The Sunshine Of My Life was being released,  on March 4, 1973, 4 decades go today.
