May's Theme At So Many Roads

On May. 11, 2014, So Many Roads To Ease My Soul will celebrate 4 1/2 years of bringing you live classic rock music. music that burst on the scene almost 6 decades ago and still resonates so strongly today.  So, to commemorate our time on the web and the music we bring you, our May 2014 theme here at So Many Roads is entitled Legacy Of The 60s.  What that means is that every band we post this month released their first album sometime in the decade of the 1960s.  The concerts we'll post, however, all take place from 1970 through today, Thus, the concerts are the legacy of the band's start in the 1960s.

In keeping with the theme, each post will be sure to reference the artist's first album, the year in the 60s it was released and the critical and commercial reception it received.

Neil Young - 2003-04-29 - Hamburg, Germany (SBD)

We finish our “We’re An American Band (North American, that is)”month with one from Canada’s own, Neil Young. We’re already learned much of Neil in our previous Buffalo Springfield and CSNY posts, but we forgot to mention that he now lives in Northern California. That’s why his annual Bridge School Benefit shows are held at the Shoreline Amphitheater, in Mountain View, CA about 40 minutes south of San Francisco. This soundboard recording captures Neil in Germany on April 29, 2003, 11 years ago today. Neil presents Greendale, his 10 song rock opera that explores life in a fictional small town in California, an appropriate way to finish our April theme.

The Eagles - 1994-04-28 - Burbank, CA (SBD)

Only in America, and in rock and roll's unique history, could 4 men representing the states of Michigan, Texas, Minnesota and Nebraska, form a band that would come to embody the Southern California sound. But that's exactly what Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon, and Randy Meisner did in 1971 when they formed The Eagles originally serving as Linda Ronstadt's backing band. Almost as ironically, the band's first 2 albums which showcased their California style, were recorded in London. The Eagles would eventually become one of the biggest selling bands in the world. Their Greatest Hist 1971-1976 album is the largest selling disc in US history, with almost 30 million copied being sold.  Their 1976 album, Hotel California, their first with guitarist Joe Walsh, sold over 16 million copies, becoming one of the monster discs of the late 1970s, along with Rumours and Frampton Come Alive.  Of course, like many groups we've feature this month, The Eagles disbanded for a time, breaking up ibn 1980, only to reform and resume their career.  This post captures the band during their 1994 reunion. As I have mentioned in several posts on So Many Roads,, MTV’s Unplugged became “THE” show to appear on in the early 1990s thanks to the buzz and record sales generated by appearances by such artists as Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton. So when the Eagles decided to reunite in 1994, after what Don Henley jokingly called a “14 year vacation”, it was hardly surprising they chose Unplugged for one of their first live gigs. This soundboard recording captures the 2nd of two nights of recording for the Unplugged show, on April 28, 1994, 20 years ago today. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - 2002-04-28 - Tacoma, WA (ALD Matrix)

Earlier this month, as part of our “We’re An American Band (North American, that is)”theme, we brought you some of the history of David Crosby, Neil Young and Stephen Stills. Today we’ll tell you how those 3 came together in 1969 along with the only artist this month who isn’t from North America. Graham Nash. Crosby and Stills first hooked up in 1968 after the former had been kicked out of The Byrds and the latter found himself without a band due to the demise of Buffalo Springfield. In July of that year, Nash, who has met Crosby in 1966 when the Byrds toured in the UK, was in the US touring with the Hollies. He renewed his acquaintance with the former Byrd and at a party at Joni Mitchell’s house, harmonized for the first time with Crosby and Stills. Soon after, Nash made the decision to leave the Hollies and work with Crosby and Nash. CSN released their first album in May 1969 to rave reviews. In addition, the disc climbed to #6 on the Billboard charts. The band decided to head out on the road in support of the album, but needed additional musicians to play live. Stills first reached out to Steve Winwood but he was busy with Blind Faith. So, he reached back to his days with Buffalo Springfield and brought Neil Young on board. They played their first show on August 17, and a day later, played Woodstock in front of an audience a “half a million strong”. The quartet’s relationship has been rocky since the start, but when they are in harmony, the music they produce ranks among rock’s best. This soundboard ALD recording captures CSNY on April 28, 2002, a dozen years ago today in Tacoma. As promised, here’s the last night at the Capitol Theatre in April 1977, which is also our final installment this month from the Dead’s 1977 Spring tou. This soundboard recording captures the Dead on April 27, 1977, 37 years ago today. This one will always have a special place in my heart, as I remember listening to it live on WNEW-FM. Moreover, it was the first concert I ever taped off the radio. The show’s a bit short compared to others from Spring 1977, maybe to ensure it fit within the broadcast window, but the band’s on fire. Born in Seattle, Washington on November 27, 1942, Jimi Hendrix was American by birth, but it would be the United Kingdom that first recognized his talent. He was a guitarist for a band Curtis Knight and the Squires when in late 1966, he moved to London after being discovered by bassist Chas Chandler of the Animals. With a few months, months, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, featuring Noel Redding on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums, had three top ten hits in the UK - Hey Joe, Purple Haze, and The Wind Cries Mary. Even after a mesmerizing performance at Monterey Popin June 1967, Hendrix was still more popular in Europe than his home country. After all, when Hendrix toured with the Monkees in the summer of 1967, it was the latter band that had top billing! It would take until November 1968, when his album Electric Ladyland hit the top spot on the Billboard charts for Hendrix to achieve the same level of fame in his home country as he had abroad. This soundboard captures Jimi on April 26, 1969, 45 years ago today in Los Angeles. The show took place about 6 months after the release of Electric Ladyland, and 4 months before his historic performance at Woodstock The show was also one of the last performed by the original Experience, as Noel Redding would soon leave the band due to repeated disagreements with Jimi.

Jimmy Buffett - 2008-04-26 - Frisco, TX (SBD)

Jimmy Buffett was born in Pascagoula, Mississippi, spent part of his childhood in Mobile, Alabama, then began his musical career in Nashville, Tennessee. With those Southern roots, it’s little wonder that his earliest albums had a country western tinge to them. In fact his 3rd album, A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean, released in June 1973, went to number 43 on the country charts, but couldn’t crack the Billboard Top 200 album list. After moving to Key West, however, Buffett began developing the persona and writing the songs that have defined his career. His “gulf and western” sound, as it sometimes is called, combines country, folk, and pop music with tales of island escapades and tropical paradises, making us all long for our own Margaretville. On the musical front, Buffett has developed a loyal following of “Parrotheads” who flock (pun intended) to his concerts. In addition, he’s become an entire industry, Under the Margaritaville brand name, he had launched stores, restaurants, liquors and record companies; just to name a few of his ventures. This soundboard recording captures Jimmy om April 26, 2008, 6 years ago today, in Texas. James Taylor - 1970-04-25 - Harvard University, MA (SBD)

Five time Grammy Award winner James Taylor was born in Boston, but when he was three, the family moved to North Carolina. He would return to Massachusetts as a teenager, and later spend time in New York and London playing music, but would become a star when he moved to Los Angeles in late 1969 and recorded the album Sweet Baby James, which was released in February 1970. James Taylor T he album, and  and the single, Fire and Rain, both reached #3 on the Billboard charts, vaulting Taylor into the limelight and eventually resulting in a Time Magazine cover story the next year.  The album was hailed as a folk rock masterpiece and earned several Grammy Award nominations, including one for Album of the Year.  This soundboard recording, from April 25, 1970, 5 decades ago today, from Harvard University, captures Taylor just 2 months after the release of his career defining album.  Plenty of songs from that album are present in the set list, including Fire and Rain right before the encores, but so are a host of covers (such as Okie From Muskogee and For Free) and traditional tunes (such as Greensleeves and Oh Susannah).  As you take a look at this concert with 4 decades of hindsight, you might be interested in seeing what the student newspaper, the Harvard Crimson, thought about Taylor in a review published 4 days after the show (go here).  I found the comparisons to Neil Young kind of funny!  In any event, read the article, then download this wonderful recording of JT when he was one of the leading lights of the folk rock movement.

The Rascals - 2010-04-24 - New York, NY (FM) 

In the early 1960s, three quarters of this band originally played with Joey Dee and the Starlighters. When Felix Cavaliere, Eddie Brigati and Gene Cornish went out on their own, adding drummer Dino Danelli from Garfield , NJ, the same town Brigati was from, they became the Young Rascals.  Eventually shortened to juts The Rascals, the band ran off a staring of top 10 hist in the late 1960s, including 3 number 1 tunes in Good Lovin, Groovin' and People Got To Be Free. It ended all too quickly, with the band coming apart as the decade came to an end..  In fact, with the exception of a short set played at their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, the last time the original Rascals played a full concert was in 1970.  Then after 4 decades apart, the band reunited on April 24, 2010, just 4 years ago today, at Robert De Niro’s Tribeca Grill, for a charity event for the Kristen Ann Carr Fund, where Steve Van Zandt and his wife, Maureen, were also being honored. The Kristen Carr Fund is named for the daughter of Bruce Springsteen manager Barbara Carr and music writer Dave Marsh.  Kristen passed away from Sarcoma in 1993. The fund benefits the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, where research is being done to find a cure for the disease. When asked why they got back together for this event,  Rascals guitarist Gene Cornish said: “I speak on behalf of the band when I say all the money offers in the world could not entice the Rascals to reunite, but four phone calls from Stevie and without hesitation we enthusiastically and immediately agreed to both support this wonderful cause and honor Stevie and Maureen.”  The show was broadcast on Sirius Satellite Radio, and captured the Rascals playing all of their classics, with some help from Bruce Springsteen and Miami Steve on Good Lovin'. By the way, the association with Steve and Maureen Van Zandt eventually led to another reunion in 2012. Miami Steve and his wife  produced The Rascals: Once Upon a Dream, a Broadway show featuring the band performing their tunes set against a backdrop of the history of the group and the 1960s, featuring interviews with the four Rascals, filmed scenes of actors enacting out key moments in the band's history, news footage, and archival footage of the band.

Warren Zevon - 1978-04-24 - Roxy, Los Angeles CA (FM)

Born in Chicago in 1947, Warren Zevon moved to Los Angeles when he was til a teenager. When he quit high school, he moved to New York, and later to Spain, to pursue a musical career, but by 1975, was back in LA. He roomed there with then unknowns Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. He also collaborated with Jackson Browne, who helped produce Zevon’s 1976 self titled album. Zevon also wrote songs for Linda Ronstadt, including Hasten Down the Wind, Carmelita, Poor Poor Pitiful Me, and Mohammed's Radio. In 1978, Zevon released Excitable Boy, an album produced by Jackson Browne and guitarist Waddy Wachtel. The disc met with both critical and commercial success. Rolling Stone called the album one of the most significant releases of the 1970s. The disc went to #8 on the Billboard charts, and spawned the classic single Werewolves of London, which reached #21 on the singles chart. This FM broadcast captures Zevon right as Excitable Boy was climbing up the charts, on April 24, 1978, 3 dozen years ago today. Interestingly, on that same day, the Grateful Dead was playing a concert in Normal IL, which has been officially released as Dave’s Picks 37. They too had taken notice of Zevon, as their choice for an encore that night was none other than Werevolves of London.

I personally think this is one of the finest, and most underrated shows from the Spring tour. Check out the Scarlet Begonia into Fire On The Mountain to close the first set, as well as the incredible segue of Help on The Way, Slipknot, Franklin’s Tower, Around and Around, Going Down The Road, and Not Fade Away to conclude the second set. As long time readers of this blog know, I have written innumerable posts about the Grateful Dead’s legendary 1977 spring tour. I’ve talked about the numerous official releases from the tour, including the most recent 5 concert, 14 CD box set simply titled May 1977 that was released last year. I’ve discussed the famed May 8, 1977 concert at Barton Hall, which Deadheads have voted the best show in the band’s history. I’ve posted shows from the night before Barton Hall in Boston and the after in Buffalo, which many folks think might have been just as good. I’ve recommended that folks buy the Winterland 1977 box set, which features the final 3 shows of the tour, shows that are on par with the 3B’s (Boston, Barton, Buffalo) from May. Today we bring you the show where it all started, the very first show of that Spring 1977 run, a soundboard recording from April 22, 1977, 37 years ago this very day, from Philadelphia. Bruce Cockburn - 1989-04-21 - Denver CO (FM)

Our “We’re An American Band (North American, that is)” theme this April is the perfect opportunity for the first post at So Many Roads featuring Bruce Cockburn. Cockburn was born in Canada in 1945, and established a strong following in that country after he began his musical career. He didn’t have much impact in the US until 1980 when his single, Wondering Where The Lions Are, went to #21 on the Billboard charts.His 1984 album Stealing Fire, produced the well know singles Lovers In A Dangerous Time and If I had A rocket Launcher. While I owned that disc, I soon lost tocuh with Cockburn’s music, moving on to other bands. I reconnected with his material, however, in the early 1990s, thanks to Jerry Garcia. At a concert at Madison Square Garden in November 1991, I heard Garcia play a wonderful tune called Waiting On A Miracle. Knowing it wasn’t a Jerry original, I did some research, and lo and behold, learned it was written by Cockburn about the revolution in Nicaragua. As long time readers of this blog know, I have always credited the Dead for introducing me to a host of music and styles that I might never otherwise klearned about. This FM broadcast captures Cockburn on April 21, 1989, a quarter century ago today, in Denver. Marshall Crenshaw - 2008-04-20 - Vienna VA (HQ Aud)

As long time readers of So Many Roads Know, one of my favorite musicians is Marshall Crenshaw. Crenshaw is so under rated that he makes John Hiatt, whose lack of attention I have frequently mourned, look like Mr Popularity. Crenshaw was born in Detroit, MI but got his big break in New York, when he played John Lennon in the off Broadway production, Beatlemania. While in New York, he recorded Someday, Someway, a song that Robert Gordon covered and took to #76 on the Billboard charts in 1981. Crenshaw released his version the next year, which wenr to #36 in the charts, his only top 40 single. Crenshaw’s first 2 albums are must owns for every rock fan. Famed critic Robert Christgau summed those 2 discs up in one simple word - PERFECT. This high quality audience recording captures Crenshaw a quarter century after his debut disc was released, on April 20, 2008, a half dozen years ago today. Download this, then, if you get a chance, listen to his radio show, The Bottomless Pit, broadcast Saturday nights at 10 pm on WFUV, where he plays tunes from his own music collection.

Buffalo Springfield - 1968-04-20 - Dallas, TX (SBD)

Combine 2 parts USA with 3 parts Canada and what do you get - Buffalo Springfield, a band that lasted less than 3 years but was one of the most influential in rock history. Stephen Stills was born in Dallas, TX but being part of a military family, spent parts of his youth in Florida, Louisiana, Costa Rica, Panama Canal Zone and El Salvador. He started his music career in New York singing in Greenwich Village where he met Richie Furay. Furay had been born in Ohio but also came to New York to pursue a musical career, He and Stills played together in the Au Go Go singes, the house band at NY’s famed Café A Go Go, and a a group called The Compnay, which at one point went on a 6 week tour of Canada, where they met Neil Young. Neil was born in Toronto on November 12, 1945. he played in several bands in Canada in his teens, including a group called the Mynah Byrds, where he met bass player Bruce Palmer. Palmer had been born in Bellville, Ontario, Canada. When the Mynah Byrds broke up, Young and Martin drove Neil’s hearse to California, in hopes of locating Stills. Around that time, Stills and Furay had moved to Los Angeles to try and jump start their music careers. Legend has it that Stills met Young in traffic in Los Angeles, when the former recognized the latter’s hearse. Dewey Martin, who had also been born in Ontario, was also in Los Angeles at the time, having spent time previously in Nashville, Las Vegas and the Pacific Northwest. He was working in LA for a band called The Dillards, who decided to cut him loose but gave him the phone number for band that needed a drummer. Martin signed on with Stills, Furay, Young and Palmer, becoming the final pieced of the legendary Buffalo Springfield. This soundboard recording captures the Springfield on April 20, 1968, 46 years ago today, in Dallas. Just a little over 2 weeks later, the band would play their final show, disbanding for over 40 years before a brief reunion on 2010/2011. Their time was short, but their legacy has been everlasting. Johnny Cash - 1981-04-19 - Rotterdam, Netherlands (SBD)

He may have been born in Arkansas, but Johnny Cash will always be synonymous with Tennessee. He moved to Memphis at age 22, passed away in Nashville at age 71, and in the 5 decades in between, made music that inspired generations of fans and future artists in every genre from country to rock to gospel to blues. So vast was his influence that the The Man in Black was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, The Gospel Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame. This soundboard recording captures Cash on April 19, 1981, 33 years ago today, while on tour in Europe. While the 1980s were not a commercially successful time for Cash in terms of record sales, he was still an international star, able to sell out arenas on both sides of the Atlantic. For this show, Cash was joined on stage by Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins. The three of them, along with Elvis Presley had jammed together at Sun Studios in Memphis on December 4, 1956, and tapes of the session were released as an album entitled Million Dollar Quartet. The session also inspired a Broadway play which took the same name. Five years after this show, Cash, Lewis and Perkins would collaborate once again, The three, along with Roy Orbison, recorded the album Class of ’55, a disc commemorating how all 4 came to Sun Studios in 1955 to make music in the new era of Rock and Roll.

The Beach Boys - 1980-04-18 - Philadelphia, PA (FM)

They were the pride of Hawthorne CA, a town just 15 miles south west of Los Angeles. Brothers Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, cousin Mike Love and good friend Al Jardine formed the Beach Boys in 1961, and set out on a career that made them one of, if not, the, pre-eminent American rock band. In the beginning, the embodied the sound of culture of Southern California - surf, hot rods and blond girls at the beach. As the band and rock grew up side by side, their sound, under the direction of Brian, became more mature and sophisticated, incorporating intricate hormones and multi-layered sound. Ironically, the leader of “America’s Band” suffered a nervous breakdown and almost destroyed the band in pursuit of emulating and outdoing London’s greatest musical export, the one and only Beatles. While in the 1970s and beyond, the Beach Boys may never have reached the heights of success that they achieved in the 1960s, the band has survived breakdowns and breakups, deaths and disillusionment to remain a fixture on the rock scene. Just 2 years ago, the surviving members reunited for a sold out tour to celebrate the band’s 50th anni9vrsary. This post captures the band during one of the more difficult times in their long career. On March 24, 1980, The Beach Boys released Keepin’ The Summer Alive, their 24th studio album and 2nd with CBS Records. The production and recording of the album was filled with tension and drama. While Brian Wilson worked with Mike Love to write some new material for the disc, it was evident that Brian was no longer the creative force he once was. Nor was he able to function as producer, as he had in the past. In fact at one point, Brian stopped production because he only wanted to work on oldies. Dennis Wilson also had his issues with the album and left the recording studio after a few sessions. The group brought in Bruce Johnston to handle production, and needed to reach back into a library of songs recorded years earlier, but never released, in order to fill out the album. Keepin' the Summer Alive only reached #75 in the U.S. on the Billboard charts, not the performance that CBS was looking for when they signed the Beach Boys to a massive record deal in 1978. It would be 5 years before the Beach Boys released another album, by which time they had lost Dennis Wilson, who drowned in December 1983. This FM broadcast captures the group on tour in support of their latest release on April 18, 1980, 34 years ago today, sans Dennis but with Brian. Despite their troubles in the studio, the band would continue to tour and draw crowds of folks who, like the group, were intent on Keepin The Summer Alive.

David Crosby - 1987-04-18 - Houston, TX (SBD) 

Born and raised in Los Angeles CA, David Crosby was a founding member of not one, not two, but three different bands - The Byrds, CSN (Crosby, Stills and Nash) and CPR (Crosby, Pevar & Raymond). In addition, he is one of a select group of artists inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice - for his work with The Byrds and with CSN. Last month we brought you our first David Crosby post, a concert from 1984, about a year before he was arrested for he was arrested for a hit-and-run incident, as well as possession of a concealed pistol and drug paraphernalia. Today we bring you a soundboard recording of Crosby from April 19, 1987,37 years ago this very day, and just about 1 year after he was released from prison. Crosby was trying to revive his career, as well as overcome his long time drug issues. In fact, Neil Young had promised to reunite with CSN if Crosby could kick his habit. Crosby did, and neil kept his word, and the foursome went into the studio just 1 week after this show to begin recording what would become the album, American Dream.

The Byrds - 1970-04-18 - Washington DC (SBD)

While the Byrds may be best known for the songs they sung and recorded in their earliest days as a band, their finest live performances occurred long after all the original members, except Roger McGuinn, left the group. The quartet of McGuinn, Clarence White, Skip Battin and Gene Parsons, which came together in late 1969, not only formed the most stable and longest tenured of any Byrds line-up, but also turned into the band's best live ensemble. McGuinn was originally from Chicago IL, White from Lewiston, ME, Battin from Gallipolis, OH and Parsons from Morongo Valley, CA. Featuring McGuinn and White's dual lead guitar work, this version of The Byrds toured relentlessly between 1969 and 1972. This soundboard recording, from April 18, 1970, 44 years ago today, captures The Byrds in Washington DC at the peak of their live performances.

Jorma Kaukonen - 1982-04-16 - Clark Univ, Worcester, MA (SBD)

We continue our “We’re An American Band (North American, that is)” theme with yet another artist who moved from the East to the West Coast in order to pursue his musical dreams. Born in Washington DC in 1940, Jorma Kaukonen moved to San Francisco in 1962. As one of the founding members of the Jefferson Airplane, he was an integral part of the musical and cultural revolutions that arose in that city in the mid 1960s. Jorma, along with Jack Casssady, would launch Hot Tuna in 1969, even while both were still members of the Airplane. Jorma would also have a successful solo career, especially playing acoustic tunes that showcased his incredible dexterity and finger picking skills. This soundboard recording captures Jorma at his acoustic best, on April 16, 1982, 32 years ago today.

Greg Kihn - 1986-04-16 - Boston, MA (FM) 

Born in Baltimore in 1949, Greg Kihn is yet another musician who found success when he moved to San Francisco in 1972. After 9 years of touring and building a local following, He became an “overnight sensation” in 1981 with The Break Up Song, which became a top 20 hit when the video for the tune received extensive airplay on the then fledgling MTv network. Kihn would have his biggest hit 2 years later, when his tune Jeopardy climbed to #2 on the Billboard charts. Kihn received even more attention when Al Yankovic released a parody entitled I Lost On Jeopardy. Yankovic also produced an accompanying music video for MTv, and Kihn was a good enough sport to appear in it! This FM broadcast captures Kihn 3 years later, in Boston on April 16, 1986, 28 years ago today. Download this one and you’ll once again “want your MTv.”

Jefferson Airplane - 1970-04-15 - San Francisco (SBD)

When the world first took notice of the San Francisco music scene, no band attracted more attention than the Jefferson Airplane.  Founded by  Marty Balin, who was born in Cincinnati but moved to San Francisco at an early age, the Airplane was one of the leading lights of the Summer of Love in 1967. Along with Balin, the Airplane consisted on San Francisco native Paul Kantner, Spence Dryden, Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Cassady and Grace Slick.  It was Slick's vocals on White Rabbit and Somebody To Love that helped propel both of those tunes into the top 10 on the Billboard charts. Unfortunately, the band would not soar for long..  By early 1970, some of the bloom was off the Utopian vision of the 1960's. The peace and love generation, which had emerged at Monterey Pop in June 1967, and then reached its zenith at Woodstock in August 1969, had given way to violence and tragedy at Altamont in December 1969. The Airplane, the only band to appear at all 3 of those festivals, was also beginning to lose steam at this point. In February 1970, Spencer Dryden left the band. Jorma and Jack were spending more time on Hot Tuna. By March 1971, founder Marty Balin would leave the band. And by September 1972, the Airplane would play its last shows. So, this soundboard, from April 15, 1970, 44 years ago today, captures the Airplane in one last moment of glory. Their set features 3 songs - We Can be Together, Wooden Ships and the title track - from their 1969 album Volunteers, the Airplane's last disc featuring all the original band members. One final note - before the play Volunteers, they mention that the Grateful Dead would be on stage next. Turns out that this show at Winterland featured 3 classic San Francisco bands - The Dead, the Airplane and Quicksilver Messenger Service. While today it would be a major event to get 3 big names to perform at one concert, these type of triple bills were a regular feature of the late 60's and early 70's.
