Earthquake Benefit - 1989-11-26 - Daly City, CA (FM)

1980s - #4: On October 17, 1989, an arthquake wuth a magniude of 6.9 struck the San Francisco area, killing 63 people and injuring 3800 others.  The quake, the strongest to hit the region since 1906, did over $6 billion in damage. As had been the case with other tragedies, rock and rollers came together to help raise money for those impacted by the deadly quake.  This FM broadcast captures highlights of the Earthquake Relief Benefit concert from the Cow Palace on November 26, 1989, 3 dozen years ago today, including sets from Neil Young, Crosby Stills & Nash, America, Eddie Money, Steve Miller, and Jessie Colin Young.

While the Steve Miller Band originally played the blues, by 1973, the groups's music began to change, taking on more of what would soon be called an AOR sound. The tune the Joker went to #1 on the Billboard charts, and Miller set out to replicate that success with his next album. When Fly Like An Eagle was released in 1976, the album would be certified quadruple platinum, and climb to #3 on the Billboard charts. The title track would go to #2 on the Billboard singles chart, Take The Money And Run would reach #11, and Rock’n Me would go all the way to the top spot.  This soundboard recording captures Miller on tour in support of Fly Like An Eagle, at the Capitol Theatre on September 26, 1976, 4 dozen years ago today.

Steve Miller was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2016, though it wasn't all sunshine and roses, to coin a very old phrase.  During his induction speech, Miller urged the Hall to be more inclusive of women and to do more for music education. Then, in a press conference after the ceremony, he complained that the whole induction process was "unpleasant" and said "they need to respect the artists they say they’re honoring, which they don't." Miller was, in part, annoyed that the rest of the Steve Miller Band was not inducted along with him.

In any event, this FM broadcast captures Miller at the 15 annual Bammie Awards, on March 7, 1992, 32 yearsa go today.  As mentioned in our Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir post earlier this month, the Bammies were founded in 1977 by Dennis Erokan, publisher of Bay Area Music magazine. The awards were designed to recognize the best musicians and musical performances by San Francisco area bands.

In 1992, Steve Miller led in for the Grateful Dead at 10 stadium shows during their Spring/Summer tour.  In also joined the Dead during their set on several nights.  He called that run "the best thing that's happened to me in a long time. We jammed every night and it made me realize I had gotten a little stiff in my own presentation. With them, it's like playing to 80,000 people in a nightclub, or like a Monterey Pop Festival with only two bands." This soundboard recording captures Miller's opening for the Dead in as Vegas on May 30, 1992, 31 years ago today!

By 1966, however, he had found his way to San Francisco, and became part of the twin music and cultural revolutions that emerged from the City By The Bay. Miller originally played the blues, but by 1973, his music began to change, taking on more of what would soon be called an AOR sound. His tune the Joker went to #1 on the Billboard charts, and Miller set out to replicate that success with his next album. When Fly Like An Eagle was released in 1976, the album would be certified quadruple platinum, and climb to #3 on the Billboard charts. The title track would go to #2 on the Billboard singles chart, Take The Money and run would reach #11, and Rock’n Me would go all the way to the top spot. Miller continued to release successful albums and singles during the rest of the decade and into the early 1980s, but after the release of album Abracadabra in 1982 which went to #3 on the Billboard chars he never again had a major hit record. He continued to tour relentlessly, however, and draws crowds to this day This ALD recording captures Miller about a decade after his last hit album, and a 3 decadea ago today, in Mountain View on Octiber 10, 1992. The show was billed as “All Our Colors, The Good Road Concert" and proceeds went to support the International Indian Treaty Council. In addition to Miller,  Jackson Browne, SantanaMickey Hart, John Lee Hooker and  Ry Cooder, all performed.

Here's our 2nd of 3 posts dedicated to the Monterey Pop festival. This one features soundboard recordings from the afternoon and evening sessions session from Saturday, June 17,  1967, 55 years ago this very day. This afternoon session featured a host of San Francisco bands, such as Steve Miller, Country Joe & The Fish, and Quicksilver Messenger Service. But it was Janis Joplin who stole the show with her breathtaking performance that day. For the evening session, The Byrds and The Jefferson Airplane were the 2 biggest acts on the bill, but it was Otis Redding, singing to the "love crowd" in his first major appearance in front of a predominately white audience, who turned in a perfromance for the ages. Tragically, Otis died just 6 month's later, at the age of 26.

In 1967, the Steve Miller Band had yet to release an album. The band had built a reputation for live performances, however, as part of the San Francisco music scene. They even backed Chuck Berry at a March 19 concert at the Fillmore West, which was released as a live album. As a result, they were invited to play Monterey Pop in June 1967. This soundboard recording captures Steve Miller a quarter centiry after the Summer Of Love, on June 14, 1992, 3 decades ago this very day. They are opening for another San Franciso based band and Monterey Pop alum, the Grateful Dead. By the way, Miller in the mid 1970s left his early psychedelic blues sound behind, shifting the band's direction to a more pop/rock oriented style, which produced a string of hits including The Joker, Take The Money & Run, Fly Like An Eagle, Rock 'N Me and Jet Airliner.

The disc went to #3 on the Billboard charts, while the title track climbed all the way to #1 on the singles charts, his third song to accomplish that feat, with The Joker and Rock'n Me being the other two (Note - Fly Like An Eagle stalled at #2). This soundboard recording captures Miller at the Rock Werchter Festival just a few weeks after the release of the album, on July 4, 1982, 39 years ago today.

• Believe it or not, Steve Miller actually sat in with the Grateful Dead on at least 5 occasions during their 1992 summer tour, where Miller was the opening act. In some ways, that’s surprising, as Miller had gone a far more commercial route in the 1970s and 1980s than the Dead had. 
• That said, both bands emerged from the 1960s San Francisco music scene, with Miller and The Dead appearing on the same bill as early as 1966!

In May 1977, Steve Miller released Book Of Dreams, his 10th studio album. The disc went to #2 on the Billboard charts, and spawned 3 top 25 singles: Swingtown at #17, Jungle Lover at #23 and jet Airliner at #8. This soundboard recording captures Steve Miller on the same day he released Book Of Dreams on May 1, 1977, 41 years ago today. Interestingly, the set list does not include any of the big hits from that disc, which leads to some question as to whether the date on this recording is correct.

Steve Miller was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1943. His parents were friends with guitar legend Les Paul, who encouraged young Steve’s interest in music. Miller later spent time in dallas, Chicago and New York, honing his guitar skills. By 1966, however, he had found his way to San Francisco, and became part of the twin music and cultural revolutions that emerged from the City By The Bay. Miller originally played the blues, but by 1973, his music began to change, taking on more of what would soon be called an AOR sound. His tune the Joker went to #1 on the Billboard charts, and Miller set out to replicate that success with his next album. When Fly Like An Eagle was released in 1976, the album would be certified quadruple platinum, and climb to #3 on the Billboard charts. The title track would go to #2 on the Billboard singles chart, Take The Money and run would reach #11, and Rock’n Me would go all the way to the top spot. Miller continued to release successful albums and singles during the rest of the decade and into the early 1980s, but after the release of album Abracadabra in 1982 which went to #3 on the Billboard chars he never again had a major hit record.  He continued to tour relentlessly, however, and draws crowds to this day This soundboard recording captures miller about a decade after his last hit album, in Irvine CA on August 9, 1991, 26 years ago today.

In 1967, the Steve Miller Band had yet to release an album. The band had built a reputation for live performances, however, as part of the San Francisco music scene. They even backed Chuck Berry at a concert at The Fillmore West, which was released as a live album. As a result, they were invited to play Monterey Pop in June 1967.  This soundboard recording captures Steve Miller 15 years after the summer of love, on June 28, 1982, 35 years go today,  By then, Miller had left his early psychedelic blues sound behind, having shifted the band's direction to a more pop/rock oriented style, which had produced a string of hits in the 1970s,, including The Joker, Take The Money & Run, Fly Like An Eagle, Rock 'N Me and Jet Airliner. .

Here's our 2nd of 3 posts dedicated to the Monterey Pop festival. This one features the afternoon and evening sessions session from Saturday, June 17,  1967, 50 years ago this very day. This afternoon session featured a host of San Francisco bands, such as Steve Miller, Country Joe & The Fish, and Quicksilver Messenger Service. But it was Janis Joplin who stole the show with her breathtaking performance that day. For the evening session, The Byrds and The Jefferson Airplane were the 2 biggest acts on the bill, but it was Otis Redding, singing to the "love crowd" in his first major appearance in front of a predominately white audience, who stole the show. Tragically, Otis died just 6 month's later, at the age of 26.
