1991: As the decade of the 1980s became the 1990s, the Allman Brothers, who had disbanded in 1982, once again revived their career. The Allmans reformed in 1989, as the success of Greg's tune I’m No Angel, coupled with the release of the Dreams box set to commemorate the group’s 20th anniversary, generated renewed public interest in the band. Original members Greg Allman, Dickey Betts, Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson and Butch Trucks were joined by new members Warren Haynes, Johnny Neel and Allen Wood, infusing the band with additional energy. Moreover, Betts and Haynes gave the band a dynamic one two punch on guitar, reminiscent of the glory days of the early 1970s. I saw the Allman Brothers live twice - once in July 1979 right before their early 1980s break up and then again in October 1986 at the Crackdown on Crack concert with CSN and Santana. Both shows were at Madison Square Garden. Unfortunately, neither show found the band in peak form.

Today's post goes back to 1990s, when the Allman Brothers, who had disbanded in 1982, once again revived their career. The Allmans reformed in 1989, as the success of Greg Allman’s tune I’m No Angel, coupled with the release of the Dreams box set to commemorate the group’s 20th anniversary, generated renewed public interest in the band. Original members Allman, Dickey Betts, Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson and Butch Trucks were joined by new members Warren Haynes, Johnny Neel and Allen Wood, infusing the band with additional energy. Moreover, Betts and Haynes gave the band a dynamic one two punch on guitar, reminiscent of the glory days of the early 1970s. This soundboard recording captures the band on August 3, 1993, 33 years ago today. The band was riding a new wave of popularity in the early 21st century with Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks on guitar, providing a one two punch similar to How Duane Allman and Dickie Betts did for the band in the early 1970s.

The band reformed in 1989, on the heels on Greg Allman’s solo success with the song I’m No Angel and renewed public interest after the release of the Dreams box set to commemorate the band’s 20th anniversary. Original members Allman, Dickey Betts, Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson and Butch Trucks were joined by new members Warren Haynes, Johnny Neel and Allen Wood, infusing the band with additional energy. Moreover, Betts and Haynes gave the band a dynamic one two punch on guitar, reminiscent of the glory days of the early 1970s. The newly reformed band would play live for nother quarter century, until their final shiow in 2014! This soundboard recording captures the Allman's in New Orleans on May 5, 2007, 19 years ago today.

Allman Brothers Band  - 1979-04-18 - Baltimore, MD (FM)

The Allman Brothers were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1995, the same year as Led Zeppelin, whose induction overshadowed everyone. The band members who were inducted - Duane Allman, Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Jai "Jaimoe" Johanny Johanson, Berry Oakley and Butch Trucks - reflected the band's original line up from the early 1970s. Later members, such as Warren Haynes, Chuck Leavell, Derek Trucks and Allen Woody, just to name a few, were not included. Gregg later admitted that he was drunk for most of the week leading up and including the induction ceremony. He was embarrassed by that fact and afterward went into rehab to get clean and sober.

This FM broadcast captures the Allman Brothers in Baltimore on April 18, 1979, 47 years ago today. That tour was a bright spot before a tragic fall. The group had just recently reformed, after splitting apart in 1976 due to drug issues, legal conflicts and numerous tensions between band members. Their recent album, Enlightened Rougues, released in February, was well received, with some great guitar work between Dickey Betts and new addition, Dan Toler, on songs such as Pegasus, Can't Take It With You and Crazy Love. The band, however, was still in serious trouble. Their record label, Capricorn, collapsed later in the year due to financial issues, and Southern Rock simply was losing popularity amidst the punk and new wave revolution. By 1982, the band would again break up, and stay apart for another 7 years.

Allman Brothers Band - 1973-03-24 - Fort Worth, TX (SBD)

1970s - #7: In 1971, the Allman Brothers lost founder, spiritual leader and guitar virtuoso, Duane Allman, in a motor cycle accident. In 1972, another motorcycle accident, just blocks from where Duane died, claimed the life of bassist Berry Oakley. Those twin losses would have finished most bands. The Allmans, like the Phoenix rising from the ashes, however, somehow reached new heights of success and popularity in 1973. The single Rambling Man reached #2 of the Billboard charts, and helped spur interest in other Southern rock bands, such as Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Marshall Tucker Band. This soundboard recording captures the Allmans on tour during that historic year, Fort Worth, on March 24, 1973, 53 years ago today.

2000s- #2: Between 1989 and 2014, the Allmans Brothers Band played over 200 shows at the Beacon Theater in New York City. Their annual residency, usually in March, became the stuff of legends. The Allmans not only celebrated their 40th anniversary in 2009 at the venue, with 15 sold out shows packed with guest stars, but also play their very last show as a band at the theatre. This soundboard recording catures the Allmans during their 2000 run at the Beacon, on March 11, 2000, 26 years ago today.

2020s - #2: On March 10, 2020, 6 years ago today as captured in this soundboard recording, Jaimoe reunited with a host of other former Allman Brothers Band members to crelebrate the band's 50th anniversary with a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden. Guitarists Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes, bassist Oteil Burbridge, percussionist Marc Quinones, and keyboardist Chuck Leavell joined Jaimoe for the celebration. So did Reese Wynans, who while never a member of the band, was a part of the initial 1969 jam session that led to the Allman Brother’s formation. It was a joyous night, a celebration of incredible music and legends lost, and the last concert at Madison Sqaure Garden for over a year due to the impact of the COVID pandemic.

ABB 1970 - Back To Back - #1: When the Allman Brothers took the stage at the Fillmore East on February 13, 1970, 56 years ago today, the band was just about 1/2 way between 2 milestones in their career. The first official Allman Brothers band concert took place on March 30, 1969 in Jacksonville, FL.  In March, 1971, the Allmans played 2 shows that were recorded for what became one of rock's most legendary live albums, entitled simply At Fillmore East. So this soundboard recording from the venue where they would score their greatest success finds the band on the rise to stardom. By the way,  they served as the lead in that night for another jam band that they would be forever linked with, San Francisco's Grateful Dead. 1980s - #4: In late 1981, the Allman Brothers were a band in deep trouble. Their record label, Capricorn, had collapsed about a year earlier due to financial issues,. In addition, Southern Rock was losing popularity amidst the punk and new wave revolution. Moreover, in fighting, especially between Greg Allman and Dickie Betts, often fueled by alcohol and drugs, was tearing the band apart. By 1982, kt was over. As Dickie Betts explained, "we broke up in '82 because we decided we better just back out or we would ruin what was left of the band’s image."  Fortunately for rock fans, the band would get back together in 1986 and continue its long, illustrious career well into the 21st century.  This soundboard recording captures the allman Brothers in one of theor last concerts before their 1982 break up, in Gainesville, on January 16, 1982, 44 years ago today.

Allman Brothers - 1995-08-09 - Wantagh, NY (SBD)

On Agust 9, 1995, 30 years ago today, the Allman Brothers, having heard the tragic news of Garcia's passing, decided that the show must go and dedicated their performance to Jerry, which Warren Haynes wrote about in the tune Patchwork Quilt. This soundboard recording captures that historic show, which featured guests appearances from Chris Robinson, Marc Ford, Hook Herrera and Danny Louis. It was only fitting in some ways that the Allmans were on stage the night Jerry passed, given the multitude of connections between the two. Both The Allmans and the Grateful Dead were renowned for their improvisational jams. Both bands had 2 drummers, had roots in blues, country, jazz, folk and bluegrass, and suffered tragic losses in the early 1970s only to rise to new heights. Both bands were connected to Bill Graham, and as a result frequently headlined both Fillmores. In fact, the Allmans closed the Fillmore East, while the Dead did likewise at the Fillmore West. In addition to their 1973 summer tour dates, The Dead and Allmans played 3 dates together in February 1970 at the Fillmore East. On December 31, 1973, the Grateful Dead took a rare break from performing on New Year’s Eve, so who else but the Allman Brothers stepped in to play a show at the Cow Palace. Of course, Jerry couldn’t stay away completely, as he and Bill Kreutzman showed up to join the Allmans for the encores.  And the relationship between the 2 bands continued long after the 1970s as we discussed in our Warren Haynes post earlier this month.

The 1993 H.O.R.D.E. Festival poster not only listed all the partcipating bands -  Blues Traveler, Big Head Todd, The Samples, Widespread Panic, Aquarium Rescue Unit, and Allgood - but also made note of the fact that the tour would include "special guests".  Well, they weren't kidding as on July 31, 1993, 32 years ago today, during the stop in Stowe, the Allman Brothers Band dropped in! This soundboard recording captures their set that day, which set the stage for the band to headline the 1994 edition of H.O.R.D.E.

Allman Brothers Band - 1991-07-21 - Telluride Mid Summer Music Festival, CO (SBD Matrix)

The Telluride Mid Summer Music Festival (not to be confused with Telluride Blue Grass Festival) was a one time event promted by Bill Graham that ran from July 19-21, 1991, on of the last major event she ran prior to his death in Octiber that year. The  festival was headlined by Jackson Browne on Friday, Joe Cocker on Saturday and the Allman Brothers on Sunday. The Allman Brothers were preceded by Hot Tuna, David Grisman, Taj Mahal and Widespread Panic.  This soundboard matrix recording captures the Allman's set on July 21, 1991, 34 years ago today.

Allman Brothers Band - 1970-07-17 - Love Valley Festival, NC (SBD or Ex Aud)

From July 16 to 18, 1970, Love Valley hosted "The Woodtstock Of The South", a 3 day rock festival headlined by the Allman Brothers Band. Also on the bill were Big Brother, Radar, Peace Core, Wet Willie, Johnny Jenkins, Tony Joe White, Hampton Grease Band, Donnydale, Catfish Freedom, Sundown, Chakra, Hot Rain, Kallabash, Warm Stone Blind, Captain John's Fishmarket.  The 100 person, western themed town was overun by anywhere from 60,000 to 200,000 attendees - no one really knows as with most festivals in those days, thousands got in free when security simply couldn't contain the crowds.  The Allmans played several times across the weekend, at one point were even filmed. This soundboard (or possibly excellent audience recording) captures their set on July 17, 1970, 55 years ago today.

Grateful Dead - 1969-07-07 - Piedmont Park Free Festival, Atlanta GA (SBD)

The summer of 1969 was filled with music festivals. In fact, Atlanta hosted 2 within the span of 4 days. On July 4, the Atlanta International Pop Festival took place featuring acts such as Led Zeppelin, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Chicago and Delaney & Bonnie, just to name a few. Three days later, on July 7, the Pop festival promoters gave Atlanta’s music fans a gift - a free festival in Atlanta’s Piedmont Park featuring Chicago, Delaney & Bonnie & Friends, Spirit and The Grateful Dead. This soundboard recording captures the Dead’s set from that July 7, 1969 event, 56 years ago today. By the way, Gregg and Duane Allman sit in with the Dead during Turn On Your Lovelight, just one of a host of times members of the two bands jammed together in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
