1970s -#4: In early 1973, Paul McCartney agreed to star in a television special for the British ATV network in order to settle his two-year legal dispute with Sir Lew Grade. As the owner of the network and its music publishing division, which included the Beatles' Northern Songs catalogue, Grade had objected to Maccartney crediting his wife Linda as his co-writer since 1971, citing her lack of professional experience as a songwriter and musician. McCartney's commitment to the television project allowed him to retain the 2nd composer's publishing royalties, which otherwise would have been assigned to Grade's company. The TV show, entitled James Paul McCartney, was Paul's first such special since the Beatles' 1967 television film Magical Mystery Tour. The show's closing section featured a tape of McCartney & Wings performing live on March 18, 1973, 53 years ago today. By the way, this early version of Wings featured Henry McCullough on guitar.  He'd be replaced by Jimmy McCulloch  by the time of the Wings Over The World Tour in 1975/1976. One other note - Long Tall Sally was included in the US broadcast of the TV show while The European version of the program rsubstituted it with Hi Hi Hi.

1970s - #3: In the spring of 1976, Paul McCartney, with his new band Wings, toured the United States for the first time since the Beatles last show in San Francisco in 1966. It was a historic event, commemorated afterwards by a then unheard of release of a 3 album set called Wings Over America. Wings played 2 nights at Madison Square Garden, on Monday May 24 and Tuesday May 25. I was a junior in high school, so my buddies and I couldn't go - school night! Not that we were all that upset. Rumors abounded that the Beatles were on the verge on re-uniting (it had only been 6 years since the break up), so we figured why see 1/4 of the group when it would just be a matter of time before you could see them in their entirety. As we know, the rumors never came true, and just 4 years later, in 1980, John Lennon was tragically shot and killed. Now looking back, its clear I should have found a way to go as Wings never again toured the US. I missed out on history. This excellent audience recording captures Macca & Wings on May 9, 1976, 49 years ago today in Toronto.

The bad news - the public rehearsal from September 6, 1975, 49 years ago today, is a sometimes very good, sometimes just good, audience recording.  The good news - the private rehearsals, held somewhere between September 1 and 5 (hard to pin down the exact dates) are excellent soundboard recordings. I've done my best to list all the song from those rehearsals, but with 5 different sources, to work with, its quite possible I missed a few. That said, I've included everything in my upload so you can enjoy it all and sort it out for yourself!

Macca & Wings 1973 - Back To Back- #1: In May 1973, Paul McCartney launched a tour of the United Kingdom to promote the album Red Rose Speedway and the singe Live and Let Die, from the James Bond film of the same name.  The album would climb to #1 on the US Billboard charts, powered by the single My Love, which also claimed the top spot.  Live and Let Die, would reach #2 on the Billboard charts.  For Macca, whose earlier solo releases had mixed commercial success, this was the start of a 5 year run that would feature 4 more #1 albums (Band On The Run, Venus & Mars, Wings Over America, and Wings At The Speed Of Sound) and a #2 (London Town), as well as 4 more #1 singles (Band On The Run, Listen To What The Man Said, Silly Love Songs, and With A Little Luck). 1970s - #4: In recent years, Paul McCartney's concerts have become a celebration of his long and storied career, with his Beatle's tunes taking their rightful place as the centerpiece of each show. Such was not always the case.  When McCartney first hit the road in 1972, just 2 short years after the breakup of the Fab Four, he refused to play any songs written during his time with John, George and Ringo. Instead, he focused only on his solo material and songs written with his new band, Wings. McCartney was determined to demonstrate his abilities as a solo artist, and step out from the shadow cast by his Beatle's heritage. While he had mixed success in that endeavor in 1972, by the next year, McCartney and Wings would find their way to the top of the music world. His album, Red Rose Speedway, released in April 1973, hit number 1 on the Billboard charts, as did the single from the disc, My Love. When he toured the UK beginning in May 1973, McCartney continued the practice of avoiding Beatle tunes in his set list. This soundboard recording, from July 10, 1973, a half century ago this very day, captures McCartney in Newcastle on the last night of the tour. The show features 2 tunes from Red Rose Speedway, the previously mentioned My Love and Big Barn Bed, as well as Live and Let Die, the theme song for a James Bond movie written around the same time. The set list also includes tunes from the albums Wild Life and his self titled debut disc, but surprisingly, nothing from Ram. In any event, download this one to hear one of Sir Paul's very early solo performances!

1979 -  On November 23, 1979, Paul McCartney and Wings began a 19-date concert tour of the United Kingdom to promote their newest album, Back to the Egg. The band added a 20th date when they teamed up with Elvis Costello, Rockpile and Robert Plant for the last of 4 Concerts for Kampuchea on December 29, 1979. At the time, the UK shows were supposed to be the first leg of a world tour that would visit Japan, Europe and the US. All that ended, however, when McCartney was busted for marijuana possession when arriving in Japan in January 1980. So, though no one knew it at the time, when Wings took the stage for the last night of the Concerts for Kampuchea, it would be the last time they would ever perform as a band.  This soundboard + audience recording captures that final show in its entirety, from December 29, 1979, 42 years ago this very day.

This excellent audience recording captures night 2 in Denmark, on March 21, 1976, 45 years ago today. Note - the vocals on this one are a tad bit distant but otherwise soounds great.

In May 1973, Paul McCartney launched a tour of the United Kingdom to promote the album Red Rose Speedway and the singe Live and Let Die, from the James Bond film of the same name.  The album would climb to #1 on the US Billboard charts, powered by the single My Love, which also claimed the top spot.  Live and Let Die, would reach #2 on the Billboard charts.  For Macca, whose earlier solo releases had mixed commercial success, this was the start of a 5 year run that would feature 3 more #1 albuns (Band on The Run, Wings Over America and Wings At The Speed of Sound) and a #2 (London Town), as well as 4 more #1 singles (Band On The Run, Listen To What The Man Said, Silly Love Songs and With A Little Luck). The UK tour ended with 3 concerts at the Hammersmith Odeon. This high quality audience recording captures Macca and Wings on the middle night on mAy 26, 1973, 46 years ago today. By the way, the opening act for Paul & Wings those 3 nights - the one and only Brinsley Schwarz who we posted earlier this month.  Note - while the sound quality on this may be a bit below our normal standards, we wanted to share it given that live tapes of shows prior to the Wings Over The Word/America tour of 1975-1976 are hard to find.

Wings Over America Daily Double - #1: In the spring of 1976, Paul McCartney, with his new band Wings, toured the United States for the first time since the Beatles last show in San Francisco in 1966. It was a historic event, commemorated afterwards by a then almost unheard of release of a 3 album set called Wings Over America. Wings played 2 nights at Madison Square Garden, on Monday May 24 and Tuesday May 25. I was a junior in high school, so my buddies and I couldn't go - school night! Not that we were all that upset. Rumors abounded that the Beatles were on the verge on re-uniting (it had only been 6 years since the break up), so we figured why see 1/4 of the group when it would just be a matter of time before you could see them in their entirety. As we know, the rumors never came true, and just 4 years later, in 1980, John Lennon was tragically shot and killed. Now looking back, its clear I should have found a way to go as Wings never again toured the US. I missed out on history. Fortunately, I have several high quality bootlegs, not to mention the triple live album, Wings Over America, to help me hear what I missed. This high quality audience recording captures Macca & Wings on May 3, 1976, 42 years ago today in Fort Worth on the opening night of the tour.. Concerts for Kampuchea - 1979-12-29 - London, UK (SBD)

As 1979 came to a close, a host of rock superstars came together for a 4 night series of concerts at the Hammersmith Odeon in London to raise money for the victims of war-torn Cambodia. The 4 shows, entitled The Concerts For The People OF Kampuchea, featured the following acts:

• December 26: Queen
• December 27: Ian Dury, Matumba and The Clash
• December 28: The Specials, The Pretenders and The Who
• December 29: Elvis Costello, Rockpile and Paul McCartney & Wings 

A double album featuring highlights from the concert was released in 1981, but due to a host of record company issues, has never been released in any digital format. That said, we have some highlights from the final night of shows, on December 29, 1979, 3 dozen years ago today, which were not included on the album when it was released. These soundboard recordings capture McCartney, Rockpile & Elvis Costello demonstrating the power of rock & roll to help raise awareness and funds for social causes!

Paul McCartney & Wings - 1975-11-13 - Melbourne, Australia (SBD) 

1975 - When Paul McCartney founded Wings in late 1971, then took the band on a 1972 tour of English Universities, traveling by bus and showing up unannounced and asking to play, many though the ex-Beatle had lost his mind. Sir Paul, however, knew just what he was doing. Between 1973 and 1975, McCartney and Wings would score 3 consecutive #1 albums on the Billboard charts - Red Rose Speedway, Band On The Run and Venus & Mars. He launched the Wings Over The World Tour in September 1975, visiting Europe and then heading off to Australia. Of course, the culmination of that tour would be the North American leg the following Spring, which would come on the heels of his 4th straight #1 disc, Wings At The Speed of Sound, and generate his 5th consecutive one, Wings Over America, the 3 disc live set recorded during that tour. This sound board recording captures portions of his show in Melbourne on November 11, 1975, 39 years ago today. Wish we had the whole concert, but given how rare high quality Wings recordings are, I guess we’ll take what we can get.
