July's Theme At So Many Roads

We had such a good time, and received such as great response, to our June theme that we decided to "do it again", to quote Steely Dan - in other words, our theme for July 2025 will once again be FESTIVALS.

Enjoy the tunes!

Knebworth House in England, an estate from the 15th century, has been the site of major rock festivals since 1974 (go here for more info) when the Allman Brothers drew a crowd of 60,000.  In 1979, Led Zeppelin made their return two live performing with 2 concerts at Knebworth. The Rolling Stones, Queen, Genesis and Van Morrison, as well as dozens of other rock acts, also have graced the stage at Knebworth. On June 30, 1990, 35 years ago today, Knebworth hosted the Silver Clef Awards for outstanding contributions to music in the UK, resulting in an incredible star studded line up, including Eric Clapton, Elton John, Mark Knopfler, Pink Floyd, Robert Plant, Jimmie Page and Sir Paul McCartney. The concert was so big that it was broadcast on the radio world wide. WNEW-FM in NY carried the broadcast, and I filled several Maxell tapes with the historic performances from that show. Of course, then CD's happened, and the tapes sat in a box, as did my 2 Nakamichi tape players! Fortunately, thanks to the digital age, we now have the full FM broadcast of that historic show.

He has had number one singles on both sides of the Atlantic, selling over 100 million records. He has hosted 2 TV variety series, one in the 1970's and another in the 1980's. He has performed every style of music imaginable, including pop, rock, R&B, country, techno, soul, gospel and show tunes. He has sung the theme song to numerous movies, including What's New Pussy Cat and The Emperor's New Groove. His voice, with its trademark Welsh accent, makes every song he sings instantly identifiable. And his electrifying live performances still result in women throwing their underwear onto the stage. On top of that, he has played one of the largest festivals in the world, taking the saTage at Glastonbury on June 28, 2009, 16 years ago today, as captured in this soundboard recording. He is Tom Jones, and even after 60 years in the music business, he still has that magic when he takes the stage to captivate an audience.

Founded in 1977, the St Gallen Open Air festival is now a 4 day event that drwas a crowd of over 100,000.  Los Lobos took the stage at St. Gallen during its 10th anniversary, on June 27, 1987, 38 years ago today, as captured in this FM broadcast.  Just a few days after that appearance, everything changed for Los Lobos, starting with the release of the movie La Bamba. The movie told the tale of Ritchie Valens rise to stardom and tragic death, along with Buddy Holly, in a plane crash on February 3, 1959. Don McLean. Of course, immortalized that event as “the day the music died” in his classic tune, American Pie. During the movie’s closing credits, Lou Diamond Phillips, who played Valens in the movie, performed La Bamba, along with a then little known band Los Lobos. They would not be unknown for long. On June 30, 1987, their cover of La Bamba was released as a single and went to #1 on the Billboard charts. Then, just a week later, on July 7, Los Lobos released By Light of The Moon, an album of original material, whose theme focused on how and why the American dream eluded so many of the country’s working class. The disc received rave critical reviews, with Rolling Stone, All Music, and Robert Christgau, just to name 3, all singing its praises. Songs such as The Hardest Time, One Time One Night, River of Fools, Tears Of God, and The Mess We’re In, mixed rock, blues, country and tex-mex influences, with rhythms that could get you up dancing and lyrics that reached into your soul. If you don’t own it, you should.

Burt Bacharach wrote some of the 1960s most popular romantic tunes, sung by artsist as varied as Dionne Warwick, Dusty Springfield, The Carpenters, Tom Jones, BJ Thomas, and Herb Albert, just to name a few.  In the 1990s, he teamed with Elvis Costello for an album and a tour, even making an appearance alongside Costello playing What the World Needs Now Is Love in the 1997 movie Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery.  Legends like Bacharach play the biggest stages, and he did just that when he perfomed at Glastonbury on June 27, 2015, a decade ago today, as captured in this webcast.

39. The End (with Dave Grohl and Bruce Springsteen)

On June 16, 2022, I saw Sir Paul McCartney for the 9th time, a concert at Met Life stadium, just 2 days before his 80th birthday! Another 3 hour masterpiece, which included a guest appearance by Bruce Springsteen, for 2 songs, his Glory Days and The Beatles I Wanna Be Your Man. Bruce also sat in during the closing Abbey Road medley to add some blistering guitar work. The encore included a 2nd guest appearance, by a virtual John Lennon.  Using footage from the Rooftop Concert, Paul and John did a virtual duet on I've Got A Feeling, and there wasn't a dry eye in the house. Given Sir Paul's age, I may never get to see him live again, but the memories, especially from the last 4 shows which I attended with my wife and twin sons, will last forever. This webcast recording captures Sir Paul just 9 days after that MetLife show, on June 25, 2022, 3 years ago today, doing what any 80 year old would do - headlining the Glastonbury Festival for the 2nd time!.  The set includes the same guest spots by Springsteen, the virtual duet with John, plus an appearance by David Grohl during Band On The Run and The End.

For 3 straight years, from 1968 to 1970, The Isle of Wight, a small island just off the south east coast of England, was the site of major rock festivals attracting some of the biggest names in rock music.  The 1968 festival was headlined by The Jefferson Airplane while the 1969 concert featured Bob Dylan and The Who.  The 1970 festival, however, has garnered the most attention, however, for two reasons.  First, Jimi Hendrix headlined the show, which in turn attracted additional acts such as Jethro Tull, Ten Years After, Chicago, The Doors, The Who, ELP, The Moody Blues, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, and Miles Davis.  Second, the event attracted over 600,000 people, making it the largest concert ever held until that point.  The massive nature of the event also meant it would be the last such show on the Isle of Wight for over 32 years. In 1971 the British Parliament passed the "Isle of Wight Act" preventing gatherings of more than 5,000 people on the island without a special license. The festival was revived in 2002, and has been held every year since except 2020 due to the pandemic. This webcast recording captures Sheryl Crow at the 2018 edition, in June 24, 2018, 7 years ago today.

When they first got together in 2008, it seemed to be an unlikely partenership to say the least.  Robert Plant was the howling voice of Led Zeppelin, the masters of hard rock. Alison Krauss was a bluegrass icon, know for her angelic, hypnotic vocals.  Yet, when they came together in the studio in late 2007, with legendary producer T Bone Burnett, the result was magic.  Their album, Raising Sand, went to #2 on the Billboard charts, and won the Grammy for Album of the Year, along with 4 others. The critics also loved the disc, with the Village Voice, for example, writing that it was "powerfully evocative" and "utterly foreign, oddly familiar, and deeply gratifying".  The duo toured in 2008, then went their separate ways until 2022, when they again hit the road together.  This FM broadcast captures Plant and Krauss at Glastonbury on June 23, 2022, 3 years ago today!

Launched on June 30, 2008, U2’s 360° tour would run for over 2 years, visit 5 continents and encompass 110 shows, sell over 7 million tickets and gross over $736 million. The tour took its name from the unique stage configuration that allowed the audience to almost completely surround the stage. To accommodate that set up, a massive four-legged structure nicknamed "The Claw" was built above the stage, with the sound system and a cylindrical video screen atop it. As the tour wound down in June 2011 with a series of shows in North America, U2 flew across the pond to the UK on June 24, 14 years ago today, to headline the Glastonbury Festival. They left The Claw behind, but made sure to bring the intensity and fire that that has made them legends as live performers.
