Chicago, which at the time still known as the Chicago Transit Authority, had initially been signed on to play at Woodstock. Unfortunately for the band, however, they had a contract with concert promoter Bill Graham, which allowed him to move the date of Chicago's concerts at the Fillmore West. He rescheduled their Fillmore performances to the weekend of Woodstock, thus forcing the band to back out of the festival. Graham's reason - he wanted to open a slot at the festival for one of his other bands, which turned out to be Santana! Needless to say, Chicago, according to singer and bassist Peter Cetera, was "sort of peeved at him for pulling that one."

This soundboard recording captures Chicago a year after Woodstock, at another massive rock festival at the Isle Of Wight on August 28, 1970, 54 years ago today.  We'll have more on the Isle Of Wight festivals in our Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan posts later this month.

2010s -#1: Chicago was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2016, along with N.W.A., Cheap Trick, Deep Purple, Steve Miller and Bert Berns. In an interesting twist, Peter Cetera, who led Chicago's transition toward playing more power ballads in the in the late 1970s and early 1980s, chose not to attend. The band's set at their induction therefore, featured their early classics, the tunes that truly made them Hall of Famers in the first place! This TV soundboard recording captures that performance, from 8 years ago today, on April 8, 2016.

The group now known as Chicago began on February 15, 1967, at a meeting involving saxophonist Walter Parazaider, guitarist Terry Kath, drummer Danny Seraphine, trombonist James Pankow, trumpet player Lee Loughnane, and keyboardist/singer Robert Lamm. Kath, Parazaider, and Seraphine had played together previously in two other groups - Jimmy Ford and the Executives, and the Missing Links. The group of six called themselves The Big Thing, and like most other groups playing in Chicago nightclubs, played Top 40 hits. Realizing the need for both a tenor to complement baritones Lamm and Kath, and a bass player, the band solved both problems by recuiting tenor and bassist Peter Cetera in late 1967. The next year, the band would change its name to Chicago Transit Authority, and in 1969 they would release their first album This soundboard recording captures Chicago 5 years after their 1967 start as The Big Thing, in Japan on June 8, 1972, 50 years ago today.

1960s - #4: Just about a month after Woodstock, and 2 weeks after Texas Pop, Toronto got into the act, hosting its own rock festival on September 13, 1969. 52 years ago today. Chicago, still known at the time as the Chicago Transit Authority, was one of the festival.s opening acts, as captured in this soundboard recording.  The band had released their self titled debut album, which featured such tunes as Beginnings and Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?  just a few months earlier.  Chicago was a bit overshadowed, however, at the festival by some of the other acts invited.  For example, The Doors, who closed the festival, went on stage at about 2 am, and were the only band that refused to be filmed for a documentary called Sweet Toronto. In addition, during Alice Cooper's set, a live chciken was thrown on stage, the hurled back into the crowd, generating stories that Cooper bit the chciken;s head off and that the audience tore the bird to pieces.  Moreover, John Lennon and The Plastic One Band played a set, with Eric Clapton on guitar. Yoko was so unpopular at the time that her performance was met with a hail of boo's! The subsequent album that Lennon released, called Live Peace in Toronto 1969, was the first live album released by any Beatle, either as a group or separately.

Chicago - 1970-07-21 - Tanglewood, MA (SBD)

Earlier this month, we had a recent concert from Tanglewood, featuring James Taylor backed by the Boston Pops. Today, we go back to just the 2nd year rock concerts were ever performed at that historic venue for a show from Chicago, on July 21, 1970, 49 years ago today. Bill Graham, who brought rock to Tnaglewood, originally ran into an issue with this July 21 show. Joe Cocker, who was scheduled to headline, had to cancel due to health issues. Graham attempted to get Jimi Hendrix to fill the spot but those negotiations fell through. He finally booked Chicago to headline the show. The band had scored 2 recent top 10 singles, Make Me Smile, which reached #9 and 25 or 6 To 4 which hit #4. Still, Graham was concerned if Chicago had the horsepower to stand in for Cocker and Hendrix. The band erased any doubts with a monster show that left the audience begging for more.  In fact, the crowd only headed for home after guitarist Terry Kath came out on stage to explain that they simply couldn’t play anymore due to local curfew laws. Download this soundboard recording to hear Chicago at their peak.

The group compromised, turning the project into a double album that incorporated jazz music along with some traditional rock tunes. The album, Chicago VII, was released on March 11, 1974 and went to the top of the Billboard charts. Three singles from the album, (I've Been) Searchin' So Long, Call On Me and Wishing You Were Here, all cracked the top 15 on the Billboard singles chart. This soundboard recording captures Chicago on tour in support of their double album in Louisville on June 12, 1974, 42 years ago today. Download this one to remember when Chicago could still rock, thanks to the guitar work of the late Terry Kath.

Chicago's reputation as a rock band was sullied in the 80's and 90's as the group veered more and more into soft rock ballads.  However, in the band's prime. from 1969 to 1977, with guitarist Terry Kath at the helm, Chicago could rock with the best of them. That era ended, however, with Kath's tragic death from a self inflicted gunshot wound in January 1978.  This soundboard recording captures Chicago just about a year prior to Kath's passing, at the Rockpalast in Essen, Germany, on February 12, 1977, 39 years ago today.
