Sly 1968 - Back To Back - #1:  Sly & The Family Stone was yet another band that emerged from the San Francisco music scene in the mid 1960s, They were also another band to release their debut album in 1967! While that disc, entitled A Whole New Thing. did not chart, CBS record executive Clive Davis saw potential in the band and persuaded them to write some music with more commercial appeal. Sly produced the single Dance To The Music, which was released in February 1968 and went to #8 on the Billboard charts!  They followed that in April with an album by the same name, and then just 5 months later, another album, enitled Life. This soundboard recording captures them on tour in support of both discs, during the early show at the Fillmore East on October 5, 1968, 57 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back in a few hours for the 2nd half of this Back to Back set.

Sly & The Family Stone - 1970-09-10 - Baarn, Netherlands (FM)

1970s - #1: In May 1969, Sly & The Family Stone released the album Stand, which would be the high point of the band's career, both commerically and critically. The disc went to #13 on the Billboard charts and featured the #1 single, Everyday People. The dalbum also fincluded two other classics - Sing A Simple Song  and I Want To Take You Higher.  On the heels of Stand, the band headlined the Halem Cultural festival and was invited to play Woodtsick in August 1969.  But success began to eat away at the group. Relationships within the group began to deteriorate, especially between the Stone brothers and Larry Graham. The band indulged in cocaime and PCP almost daily.  By 1970, the drug use made Sly erractic and moody, and he missed almost a third of the band's live performances. This FM broadcast captures one of the shows Sly actually did perform at, in Denmark on September 10, 1970, 52 years ago today.  Note - the cover art uses the European style date of day-month-year.

Today, So Many Roads posts our first show from Sly & The Family Stone, a soundboard recording from the Tex Pop Festival on September 1, 1969, 46 years ago today. Sly was inducted to the Rock Hall of Fame in 1993. George Clinton presented the band, Sly, who almost dropped out of sight once his career faded, as he dealt with a host of personal problems, including drugs, made a surprise appearance at the induction ceremony. It was just one of many surprises, reunions, and controversies that surrounded the 1993 induction ceremony as you’ll see in later posts this month!
