I've only seen The B52s live once, in July 2000 at the PNC Bank Arts Center as part of a 1980s celebration tour along with The Go Go's and the Psychedelic Furs.

This FM broadcast captures the band just weeks after their debut album had been released, in Boston on August 24, 1979, 47 years ago today.  That disc went to #59 on the Billboard album charrts, while the single, Rock Lobster, reached #56.

Willie Nelson - 1979-08-18 - Sedalia, Missouri (SBD)

I've seen Willie Nelson live on one occasion, on September 2, 1978 when he led in for the Grateful Dead at Giants Stadium, just the 3rd concert ever performed at that venue. Actually, it was supposed to be Waylon Jennings and Willie, but the former no showed the concert. Willie didn't let that stop him from getting us fired up for the main event with a perfromance as hot at the weather that day.

The same year I saw him in concert, Willie released the album Stardust. where he covered 10 legendary pop standards, such as the title track, Georgia on My Mind, Blue Skies and September Song. Stardust received rave critical reviews, and went to # 1 on the Billboard Country charts, as well as #30 on the magazine's top 200 album chart.  This soundboard recording captures Willie a year later,  on tour in support of that disc, on August 18, 1979, 47 years ago today.

The Turtles 1979 - Back To Back - #1: The Turtles broke up in 1970, though the band co leaders,Howard Kaylan and Mark Volma, found a 2nd career as a musical comedy act known as Flo & Eddie. In the late 1970s, they began touring again as The Turtles, featuring Flo & Eddie. This FM broadcast captures them at My Father's Place in Rosyln on July 15, 1979, 47 years ago today.  By the way, on track 2, they reference seeing Jorma Kaukonen today - that's because Flo & Eddie led in on the afternoon of July 15 for Jorma at Belmont Park before playing this show at night! Blondie 1979 - Back To Back - #1: After achieving m0dest commercial success were their first 2 albums, Blondie hit it big with their third album, Parellel Lines.  Released in September 1978, the disc went to #1 on the UK charts and climbed to #6 on the Billboard charts in the US.  The single from the disc, Heart Of Glass, did even better, climbing all the way to #1 in both countries. In April 22, 2016, I saw America for the 2nd time, at a show in Morrstown NJ. That was 38 years after that first time I saw them, in June 1978 at the Garden State Arts Center in Homdel, NJ. That's the 2nd longest gap between concerts for any band that I've seen live. (As mentioned in our John Hiatt post earlier this month, 4 decades passed between seeing Pat Benatar in 1981 and 2021 - the longest gap!).  

This FM broadcast captures America in New York about a year after the first time I  saw them, in Central Park on June 30, 1979, 47 years ago today. Dan Peek had just left the band in 1978 in order to not only pursue a new musical direction, but also to renew his Christian faith. Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell decided to continue on as America. They're still going strong to this very day!

I've seen Joe Jackson on 3 occasions - in February 1981, in August 1980 and then in October 1982. When I saw him that final time he was in the midst of making the transition from angry punk rocker to an artist playing tunes influenced by Cole Porter, jazz and big band music.

I've always preferred Angry Joe, and this FM Broadcast captures him during those early punk days, in Amsterdam on June 17, 1979, 47 years ago today. Having finished his first US tour on June 1, 1979,  Jackson returned to Europe, playing dates in Netherlands, Belgium, France, Switzerland and the UK in support of his debut album, Look Sharp. That disc had been released in the UK in January 1979, and then in the US, in April of that same year. Propelled by the single Is She Really Going Out With Him, which climbed to #21 on the Billboard Charts, the album did one better, reaching the #20 position.

Jerry Garcia (Reconstruction) - 1979-05-30 - Palo Alto, CA (SBD)

Reconstruction was another side project Jerry Garcia was involved in during the decade of the 1970s. Founded by Garcia's long time bassist, John Kahn, in early 1979, Reconstruction was built around Jerry and a quartet of jazz players. According to the Jerry Garcia website, it's unclear if Garcia was supposed to be permanent member of the band. By the time they started to perform in January 1979, however, Jerry was officially in. That limited performances to when the Grateful Dead were off the road. On a couple of occasions, they attempted to sub Jerry Miller on guitar, but the crowds expected to see the "real" Jerry" each time. Reconstruction played just over fifty shows during 1979, all on the west coast. This soundboard captures one of those shows, in Palo Alto, on May 30, 1979, 47 years ago today!

Grateful Dead - 1979-04-22 - San Jose, CA (SBD) 

As mentioned in earlier posts this month, the Grateful Dead were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. While Jerry Garcia did not show up for the ceremony, the rest of the band did, and brought a life size cardboard cut out of him! In the true spirit of the 1960s flower power era, the band attempted to be incredibly inclusive, listing 12 members as part of the band for induction. In addition to the then current line up of Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Vince Welnick, Mickey Hary and Bill Kruetzmann, the Dead also included former keyboard players Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, Brent Mydland, Keith Godchaux, and Tom Constanten, not to mention vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux. They even included lyricist Robert Hunter, who in collaboration with Garcia, had written some of the band's most famous tunes, including Uncle John's Band, US Blues, St Stephen, Eyes Of The World, Ripple, and Touch Of Grey, just to name a few. That said, I still think they missed 2 other members of the Dead family who should have been inducted. First is Bruce Hornsby, who played keyboards for them for almost 2 years alongside Welnick, about the same length of service as Constanten. Hornsby obviously was not offended, as he inducted the band. Second was John Perry Barlow, who worked with Weir in the same way Hunter partnered with Garcia. Weir/Barlow tunes, while not as numerous or famous as Garcia/Hunter compositions, included such staples of the Dead's live performances as Estimated Prophet, Cassidy, Looks Like Rain, Throwing Stones, and The Music Never Stopped, just to cite a few.

In any event, this soundboard recording captures theband on April 22, 1979, 47 years ago today, in San Jose. It was the first show for keyboardist Brent Mydland as a member of the Dead. He would become the Dead's longest tenured keyboard player, performing with the band for over 12 years, until his tragic death in July 1990 from a drug over dose at the age of 37.

Allman Brothers Band  - 1979-04-18 - Baltimore, MD (FM)

The Allman Brothers were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1995, the same year as Led Zeppelin, whose induction overshadowed everyone. The band members who were inducted - Duane Allman, Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Jai "Jaimoe" Johanny Johanson, Berry Oakley and Butch Trucks - reflected the band's original line up from the early 1970s. Later members, such as Warren Haynes, Chuck Leavell, Derek Trucks and Allen Woody, just to name a few, were not included. Gregg later admitted that he was drunk for most of the week leading up and including the induction ceremony. He was embarrassed by that fact and afterward went into rehab to get clean and sober.

This FM broadcast captures the Allman Brothers in Baltimore on April 18, 1979, 47 years ago today. That tour was a bright spot before a tragic fall. The group had just recently reformed, after splitting apart in 1976 due to drug issues, legal conflicts and numerous tensions between band members. Their recent album, Enlightened Rougues, released in February, was well received, with some great guitar work between Dickey Betts and new addition, Dan Toler, on songs such as Pegasus, Can't Take It With You and Crazy Love. The band, however, was still in serious trouble. Their record label, Capricorn, collapsed later in the year due to financial issues, and Southern Rock simply was losing popularity amidst the punk and new wave revolution. By 1982, the band would again break up, and stay apart for another 7 years.

Jerry Garcia (Reconstruction) - 1979-04-13 - Denver, CO (SBD)

Jerry Garcia was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 as a member of the Grateful Dead. We'll have more on that ceremony in posts later this month. Unfortunately, Jerry will probably never get into the Hall as a solo artist for a few reasons. First, his solo studio album production was relatively slight, totaling just 5 discs, not including work done with other acts. Second, many of his best solo songs - Sugaree, Deal, Bird Song, The Wheel, Loser, The Love Each Other, etc. - became such essential parts of the Dead’s live shows that folks forget they were originally Garcia tunes. Finally, many folks think Jerry was the Dead and/or the Dead was Jerry, neither of which is true. As today’s post shows, a Jerry Garcia solo concert could light up a stage in its own unique way!

This soundboard recording captures Garcia on April 13, 1979, in Denver, 47 years ago today.  He's  fronting Reconstruction, one of the numerous solo side projects he worked on even while touring almost constantly with the Grateful Dead. Reconstruction was built around Jerry, his long time bassist John Kakhn, and 4 jazz players. Garcia's ability and willingness to play with almost anyone, regardless of style of muisc, from jazz with Reconstruction to Bluegrass with Old & In The way, to R&B and funk with Merl Suanders, is one of the reasons he should considered for solo induction into the Hall.

The Police - 1979-03-23 - Toronto, Canada (FM)

1979 - #6: In early 1979, The Police went on tour in North America in support of their debut album, Outlandos d’Amour. The tour kicked off on March 1 at the legendary Whiskey A Go Go in Los Angeles and ran until May 25, with the band criss-crossing the US and Canada. They often played 2 shows a night, and rarely took a day off. Given that the album had flopped when initially released, the band felt compelled to tour relentlessly in hopes of gaining exposure for themselves and airplay for their songs. The strategy seemed to work, as the album eventually climbed to the #23 position on the Billboard charts in the US, and rose all the way to the #2 position in the UK. In addition, 3 singles from the disc – Roxanne, Can’t Stand Losing You and So Lonely - charted in the top 20 in the UK in 1979. Roxanne also climbed to the #32 spot on the US Billboard charts. This soundboard recording captures the band early on in that tour, on March 23, 1979, 47 years ago today.

I saw The Clash once in August 1982, a concert I've discussed in detail in my book since I almost missed it! In any event, 1982 turned out to be a star crossed year for the Clash. On one hand, the band achieved a new level of commercial success with the singles Rock The Casbah and Should I Stay or Should I Go. In addition, they received rave reviews for their live shows as the lead-in band for The Who’s “farewell tour”, during which they often times over shadowed the rock veterans. On the other hand, tensions between the band members had the band on the brink of destruction. They would go over the edge in 1983, when Mick Jones left the band, or was fired, depending on what account you read.

I saw Hall & Oates twice in the late 1970s, both times at the Garden State Art Center - my second concert ever in June 1977 and then again in September 1978. While my buddies and I were big fans of the songs Sara Smile and She's Gone, with the exception of Rich Girl, I don't really care for any of the 6 tunes that the duo took to #1 on the Billboard charts. In any event, soon after seeing them for the 2nd time, my musical tastes moved in new directions. 

Despite my lack of interest in Hall & Oates post 1978, the band soared to new heights, scoring five #1 hits in the early 1980s. This FM broadcast captures the band near the start of that run of commercial success, on December 7, 1979, 46 years ago today, in Boston.

The Ramones - 1979-12-06 - Indianapolis, IN (SBD)

The one and only time I saw the Ramones, in July 1981, was at perhaps the dingiest, dirtiest and tiniest club I ever ventured into, the aptly named Hole In The Wall in Rochelle Park, NJ. The place was normally a a biker bar but on Saturday nights in the 1980s, they featured punk and new wave music. The band set up right on the dance floor, since the bar had no stage, and the ceiling was so low that Joey Ramone almost hit his head on one of the spotlights. We were so close to the band that I’m sure they noticed when one of my buddies, having had 1 too many beers, attempted to throw up in the trash can, but missed and almost hit a speaker, Is it any wonder, then, that rule #5 in my book is titled "Rock Concerts Are Rarely Played At A Venue Meant For Music".

1970s - #6: On October 2, 1979, The Police released their second album, entitled Reggatta de Blanc. The disc was the band's first release to top the UK Albums Chart and also features their first two UK #1 singles: Message In A Bottle and Walking On The Moon. In the US, the album climbed to #25 on the Billboard charts, while Message In A Bottle reached #74, though no other single from the disc charted in the States. This soundboard recording captures The Police on tour in support of Reggatta de Blanc, in Boston, on November 27, 1979, 46 years ago today.

1970s - #3: Dave Lemieux (the Dave in Dave's Pick's) once noted that the Dead's performances in fall of 1979 felt fresh. That in large part was thanks to new keyboardist Brent Mydland, whose impact on the band, according to Lemieux, was "instant, inspired and inspiring." The Dead also brought to the table during that time a slew of new songs, which would be released the following year on the Go To Heaven album, including Alabama Getaway,  Far From Me, Althea, Feel Like A Stranger, Lost Sailor, and Saint of Circumstance. This soundboard recording captures the Dead during that fall run, in Providence on November 11, 1979, 46 years ago today.  By the way, the next two nights in Philadelphia have both been officially released, so you know this show catches the band at a peak.

1970s - #2: In October 1979, Pat Benatar released her first album, In The Heat of The Night. Having already released 2 singles that year that failed to chart, expectations for the album were minimal. Benatar herself said "My album was the last of a bunch by female singers to come out so I was told not to expect much, even though Mike Chapman was producing." Instead, the album went to #12 on the Billboard charts, propelling Pat to stardom. The next single, Heartbreaker, released in December 1979, was a smash hit, climbing to #23 on the charts. As the 1970s became the 1980s, Pat Benatar would become the leading lady of rock and roll, winning 4 consecutive Grammy Awards for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance, from 1980 to 1983. This FM broadcast captures Pat on tour in support of that first album, at the Bottom Line in New York, on November 3, 1979, 36 years ago today.
