Bruce Springsteen - 1988-02-28 - Worcester, MA (SBD)

1980s - #6: When I went to see Bruce Springsteen on March 19, 1988, I was expecting another of his high energy, full tilt boogie, rock and roll celebrations. Instead, I got darkness and pain. Perhaps the "This is a dark ride" sign that appeared on the stage as the band entered should have been a tip off. From the tone of lost love in many of the songs from the Tunnel of Love disc, to an angry version of Born In the USA, to an acoustic, stripped bare version of Born To Run, this was a different Bruce Springsteen. With the benefit of hindsight, it's now easy to see why. We know now that Tunnel of Love was about the disintegration of his marriage to Julianne Phillips. We know as well that Bruce was going through other dramatic personal changes at the time, which would lead, in the next 12 months, to dissolving the E Street Band (fortunately only temporarily) and moving from his NJ roots to LA with new love and future wife, Patti Scialfa. It was a time where one chapter was ending and a new one beginning. This soundboard recording captures Bruce during that difficult and emotional tour, on February 28, 1988, 33 years ago today.

The album sold over 3 million copies and climbed to #4 on the Billboard charts. The single, What I Am, went to # 7 on the Billboard charts and received extensive airplay on MTV. 1980S -#4: From 1977 to 1980, the Clash released an album every year, including the double album London’s Calling in 1979 and the triple disc, Sandinista, in 1980. Perhaps releasing 5 discs of music in under 24 months took its toll on the band, because in 1981 they only released 3 singles. As 1982 began, therefore, it had been more than a year since the band’s last new album release. Work was underway, however, on their next disc, a single album entitled Combat Rock. Combat Rock would feature 2 of the band’s best-known and best selling singles, Should I Stay or Should I Go and Rock The Casbah. Videos for those 2 songs would garner significant airplay on MTV. Those events were several months in the future, however, when The Clash played Sun Plaza Hall in Hong Kong on February 25, 1982, 39 years ago today, as captured in this Fm broadcast

1970s - #6: As the decade of the 1970s came to a close, the Byrds seemed to be on the verge of a reunion. Roger McGuiin, Gene Clark and Chris Hillman, along with David Crosby, played together on December 8, 1977 and February 9, 1978. While the Byrds never officially re-formed, those shows did lead to McGuinn, Clark and Hillman touring and recording together. In early 1979, they released their self titled debut album, which spawned the top 40 hit, Don’t You Write Her Off Like That. The album was a disappointment to both fans and critics, however, who were expecting the Byrds but instead of crisp harmonies and McGuinn’s trademark Rickenbacker guitar, got disco rhythms, slick production, strings and horns. McGuinn, Clark and Hillman went on tour in support of the album and fortunately their live shows featured plenty of material from their days with The Byrds. This WNEW-FM broadcast captures the trio at teh Bottom Line on Fbruary 24, 1979, 42, years ago today.

1990s - #6: As the decade of the 1980s became the 1990s, the Allman Brothers, who had disbanded in 1982, once again revived their career. The Allmans reformed in 1989, as the success of Greg Allman’s tune I’m No Angel, coupled with the release of the Dreams box set to commemorate the group’s 20th anniversary, generated renewed public interest in the band. Original members Allman, Dickey Betts, Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson and Butch Trucks were joined by new members Warren Haynes, Johnny Neel and Allen Woody, infusing the band with additional energy. Moreover, Betts and Haynes gave the band a dynamic one two punch on guitar, reminiscent of the glory days of the early 1970s. This soundboard recording captures the band, with special guest Bruce Hornsby in Colorado on February 23, 1991, 3 decades ago today.

Re-Post Day: February 22

As long time followers of So Many Roads know, our blog takes a "this day in history" approach to selecting shows. In other words, if it's January 1, for example, than the show we post took place on January 1, sometime between 1950 and the present day.

Every now and then, a day rolls by and we don't have a new show associated with that date. Some times we've gotten around that by posting my monthly column on that day. Other times, we've used some other type of informational post.

Well, in the spirit of trying something new, this time around, since I don't have a new show to post on February 22, I've re-posted download links for many of the prior shows we posted on that date. Those shows are listed below. All you have to do is search for the show you want - just copy and paste it from the list below into one of the 2 search boxes on the blog - and when you get there, you'll find a new link! Enjoy The Tunz!

1970s - #5: Forty two years ago today. on February 17, 1979, the Grateful Dead played a benefit concert for the Economic Campaign for Social Democracy, a organization led by Tom Hayden and Jane Fonda. The show, however, is significant for a far different reason. The concert would be the last time Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux performed with the Grateful Dead.  Keith had joined the band in late 1971, helping fill the void on keyboards created as Ron "Pig Pen" Mckernan was battling illness brought on by alcohol addiction, a sickness that would take life at the age of 27 in 1973.  Keith's wife Donna joined the band shortly after, adding backing vocals. The duo would be with the band through some of its peak years - 1972-1974, and 1976-1977. But as the 1970s came to a close, Keith's playing dropped off substantially, as he too was battling both heroin and alcohol dependency.  Donna was also drinking heavily. Depending on the source you choose, either Keith and Donna decided to leave the band to get their lives in order and pursue new musical directions, or the band fired them as they could no longer meaningfully contribute to the group's sound.  Whatever the truth, this soundboard recording captures their last  time on stage as members of the Dead.

After gaining some recognition in 1984 with their debut album, All Over The Place, The Bangles found themselves on top of the rock world in 1986 after the release of their second disc, Different Light. The album reached number two on the Billboard Charts, and spawned four top 40 singles, including Manic Monday, which went to #2 in April, and Walk Like An Egyptian, which climbed to the top of the charts for 4 weeks in December. The band also received extensive airplay on MTV, furthering their popularity. The ride at the top would only last another 2 years, but it was fun while it lasted. 2000s - #5: As long time readers of So Many Roads Know, one of my favorite musicians is Marshall Crenshaw. Crenshaw is so under rated that he makes John Hiatt, whose lack of attention I have frequently mourned, look like Mr Popularity. Crenshaw was born in Detroit, MI but got his big break in New York, when he played John Lennon in the off Broadway production, Beatlemania. While in New York, he recorded Someday, Someway, a song that Robert Gordon covered and took to #76 on the Billboard charts in 1981. Crenshaw released his version the next year, which went to #36 in the charts, his only top 40 single. Crenshaw’s first 2 albums are must owns for every rock fan. Famed critic Robert Christgau summed those 2 discs up in one simple word - PERFECT. This soundboard recording captures Crenshaw, in at the legendary Stone Pony in Asbury Park on February 16, 2001, 2 decades ago this very day!

1990s- #3: For a group that had played their supposed "Last Waltz" in 1976, the 1990s proved to be quite a productive time for The Band. Original members Levon Helm, Rick Danko and Garth Hudson continued to tour relentlessly in the last decade of the 20th century. In October 1992, they appeared  at the Bob Dylan 30th anniversary concert at Madison Square Garden. In 1993, they released the album Jericho, which included a unique cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Atlantic City. They played at Woodstock 1994 in August, 25 years after they had played the original festival in 1969. They capped the year by being elected to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. That 1994 class also included John Lennon, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Bob Marley, The Animals, Duane Eddy, and one of The Band’s long time touring partners, The Grateful Dead. Eric Clapton, who had long admired the group and cited them as one of the reasons he moved away from the style of music played by Cream, made the induction speech for The Band. This soundboard recording captures The Band right before that run of magical events, on February 15, 1992, 29 years ago today, in New Britain.

1970s - #4; For a band that released only one album, Seconds of Pleasure, Rockpile has an amazing legacy. What many folks don't know is that songs like Cruel to Be Kind, credited to Nick Lowe, and Girls Talk, credited to Dave Edmunds, were really recorded while they were working together as Rockpile! Because the two were on different labels, however, they could not credit the band! Moreover, it’s a bit strange, to say the least, that an English group that started as a new wave band also was known for its strong rockabilly influences. Unfortunately, Rockpile had a short lived career as tensions between Lowe and Edmunds split the band apart. This FM broadcast brings you some early Rockpile, from London, on February 14, 1977, 44 years ago today.

1990s - #2: Most of the posts on this blog delve deep into rock history, using the selected concert as a jumping off point to cover some aspect of a band’s legacy, the release of a historic album, etc. This post, however, is simply about fun, as I feature one of my guilty pleasures, Hootie and The Blowfish. I’m one of the 16 million folks who bought Cracked Rear View. I fully understand its not Abbey Road or Dark Side of The Moon, and I get that it should have never outsold such illustrious discs. But I’m not so much of a music snob to turn my back on an album that is filled with good old rock and roll, with lots of catchy tunes and great musical hooks. This HQ audience recording captures Hootie and The Blowfish at the height of their popularity, on February 13, 1995, 26 years ago today, from Nick’s Fat City in Pittsburgh. I’ve often described Hootie as a great bar band, so its only fitting this show is from a night club/sports bar! Enjoy!

2000s - #4: In February 2008, Sheryl Crow released her 6th studio album, Detours, a record, which while often characterized as political in nature, also deals with her personal struggles and triumphs. "The songs are very inspired by the last three years of events in my life," Crow said of a time that found her battling breast cancer, splitting with partner Lance Armstrong and raising her adopted son, Wyatt. Detours debuted at number two on the Billboard charts, selling about 92,000 copies in its first week and an additional 52,000 in its second week. The album's chart success was matched with critical praise, including excellent reviews from Rolling Stone, the Los Angeles Times, Entertainment Weekly, and USA Today. This FM broadcast captures Sheryl in London on February 13, 2008, 13 years ago today, promoting Detours on BBC radio.

1970s - #2:The New Jersey music scene rose to prominence in 1975 thanks to Bruce Springsteen. Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes were the 2nd most famous act to emerge from that scene. Their first three albums, I Don't Want To Go Home (1976), This Time It's For Real (1977), and Hearts Of Stone (1978), were filled with Stax R&B influences. All 3 discs were produced and arranged by Steve Van Zandt, the group's co-founder, who also played guitar in Springsteen's E Street band. Van Zandt's tune, I Don't Want To Go Home, became Southside's signature song, an evocative mixture of horn-based melodic riffs and sentimental lyrics. The band's repertoire also included The Fever, Talk to Me, This Time It's For Real, Love on the Wrong Side of Town, a wonderful cover of Sam Cooke's Having A Party, and the definitive version of Springsteen's Hearts of Stone. This FM broadcast captures Southside & The Jukes in their home state on February 11, 1978, 43 years ago today.

His next appearance was November 26, 1968 - the two "farewell" concerts by the Cream.  Thirty-seven years later, in 2005, EC, Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce reunited on the same stage for 4 concerts. In 2011, he performed 5 shows at the venue with Steve Winwood, a qiasi Blind Faith reunion. In 2015, he celebrated his 70th birthday with a concert at the RAH. 1990s - #1: In late 1996, Elvis Costello broke up his long time band The Attractions do to tensions between himself and bassist Bruce Thomas. He spent time over the next two years working in collaboration with Burt Bacharach. Costello had long been a fan of Bacharach, and even recorded his song, I'll Never Fall In love Again, for the 2nd Austin Powers movie. The duo released the album Painted From Memory in 1998, and even played a limited series of intimate live performances in support of the disc. After concluding the shows with Bacharach, Costello decided to continue to play a similar style of concert, and recruited long time keyboardist, Steve Nieve to accompany him on tour. The two embarked on The Lonely World Tour in early 1999, kicking off the run with a series of shows in Australia and Japan. This soundboard captures Costello and Nieve during that tour on February 8, 1999, 22 years ago today, in Tokyo.
