Paul Simon & Bob Dylan - 1999-07-30 - Wantagh, NY (SBD)

As the 20th century drew to a close, two rock legends, both born in 1941, each of whom started as folk rockers and evolved their sound in a variety of directions, whose music spanned 4 decades from the 1960’s to the 1990s, united for a 38 show tour of the US. Each night, Bob Dylan and Paul Simon would perform a solo set of music, bridged by a 4 or 5 song set where the iconic duo shared the stage together. Their duet usually produced the highlight of the evening, as the two teamed on Sounds of Silence, with Dylan filling the role once played by Art Garfunkel. This soundboard recording captures Dylan and Simon on the next to last night of the opening leg of their tour, on July 30, 1999, 14 years ago today. Download this one to hear 2 legends, alone and together, remind us why their music, to borrow from Dylan’s closing tune, will “not fade way.”

As legend goes, Steve Winwood reformed Traffic in 1994 after a Dead Head left a message for Bob Weir suggesting that if would be “cool” if The Dead and Traffic toured together! I’m not quite sure how true that is, but Traffic did come back together in 1994, and they were the lead-in band for the Grateful Dead’s summer tour! This soundboard recording captures Traffic during that summer tour  on July 29, 1994, 19 years ago today.

Bruce Hornsby - 1998-07-28 - York, PA (SBD)

In 1998, after several years of performing solo, Bruce Hornsby formed the Noisemakers, a new backing band consisting of John "JT" Thomas on keyboards, Bobby Read on woodwinds, JV Collier on bass, Doug Derryberry on guitar, and Michael Baker on drums, who was eventually replaced by Sonny Emory. The Noisemakers provided Bruce with new opportunities to reinvent his music in innovative and creative ways. In fact, at this point, Hornsby stopped planning set lists for his concerts, instead taking spontaneous requests from the audience to build each performance. Within each show, Hornsby encompassed rock, jazz, blues, country, Broadway and classical music. all within a jam band framework. He gave several of his classic songs new arrangements, such as transforming Valley Road into sounding much like the Grateful Dead’s Wharf Rat. He often interspersed snippets of tunes from other artists into his own songs, such as incorporating Under The Boardwalk into Fields of Gray. This soundboard recording captures Hornsby and his new band on July 28, 1998, 15 years ago today, in York PA. Download this one to hear Bruce take his music in a host of new directions.

In the late 1980s/early 1990s, Johnny Cash had his career rejuvenated as he gained popularity with an audience which was not traditionally considered interested in country music. For example, in 1988, British post-punk musicians Marc Riley (formerly of the Fall) and Jon Langford (the Mekons) put together 'Til Things Are Brighter, a tribute album featuring mostly British-based indie-rock acts' interpretations of Cash's songs. Cash was enthusiastic about the project, telling Langford that it was a "morale booster": Roseanne Cash later said "he felt a real connection with those musicians and very validated... It was very good for him: he was in his element. He absolutely understood what they were tapping into, and loved it". The album attracted press attention on both sides of the Atlantic. In 1991, he sang a version of "Man in Black" for the Christian punk band One Bad Pig's album I Scream Sunday. In 1993, he sang "The Wanderer" on U2's album Zooropa which was the closing track. According to Rolling Stone writer, Adam Gold,"The Wanderer" – written for Cash by Bono, "defies both the U2 and Cash canons, combining rhythmic and textural elements of Nineties synth-pop with a Countrypolitan lament fit for the closing credits of a Seventies western.". Neil Young - 2010-07-27 - Winnipeg, Canada (Ex Aud)

Early in 2010, Neil Young flew to Los Angeles, CA to begin work on his 33rd studio album. Neil brought in Daniel Lanois to produce the disc, which resulted in calling the album Le Noise, a pun on the producer’s last name. The disc featured Neil solo, on both acoustic and electric guitar. Le Noise was released in September 2010, climbing to number 14 on the Billboard charts while receiving positive reviews from Rolling Stone, Blare Magazine, and The Guardian, just to name 3. On May 18, 2010, even before the album hit stores, Neil went on tour playing tunes from Le Noise, such as Walk With Me and Sign Of Love, alongside classics like My My, Hey Hey and Cinnamon Girl. This excellent audience recording that captures Neil in his native Canada on July 27, 2010, just 3 years ago today.

U2 - 2011-07-26 - Pittsburgh PA (IEM)

On June 30, 2009, U2 launched 360 Degrees tour, which encompassed 110 shows over a 2 year stretch. The tour was undertaken in support of the band's then new album, No Line On The Horizon. Why a name for the tour that was different from the album title? U2 decided to name the tour after their unique stage configuration allowed the audience to almost completely surround the stage. To accommodate that set up, a massive four-legged structure nicknamed "The Claw" was built above the stage, with the sound system and a cylindrical video screen atop it. The tour became the highest grossing by any rock band in history, with $736 million in ticket sales. The set list for the 2011 portion of the tour featured more songs from Actung Baby, to mark the 20th anniversary of that album. This IEM recording captures U2 in Pittsburgh on July 26, 2011, 2  years ago today.

Black Crowes - 1996-07-23 - Supper Club, NY (SBD)

In the early part of 1996, The Black Crowes began work on their 4th album which would be entitled Three Snakes and One Charm. The disc was recorded at a rented home in Atlanta, where the band took up residence for several months to work together on the album. The band kicked off their world tour in support of the album on July 5 in Burbank, 3 weeks prior to the disc's official release. The album climbed to #15 on the Billboard charts and received 3 star reviews from both Rolling Stone and All Music. As part of the promotional efforts in support of Three Snakes, the Crowes appeared on the VH1 program Storytellers. The show was relatively new at the time, with each episode capturing artists performing in front of a small and intimate live audience, telling stories about their music, writing experiences and memories. The Black Crowes' installment was just the fifth in the series, which eventually comprised 87 episodes over its original run. This soundboard recording captures the band a few weeks before that taping, at the Supper Club in New York, on July 23, 1996. 17 years ago today.

On February 29, a rare date that comes around just every 4 years, Steely Dan did something even rarer, as they released their first studio album in 2 decades, since Gaucho in 1980. That disc, entitled Two Against Nature(clearly a reference to Fagan and Becker's tendency to not follow the norm)not only went to number 6 on the Billboard charts, but also garnered 4 Grammy Awards, including Album of The Year. The Album of the Year victory was major surprise as they defeated Eminen and his highly controversial album The Marshall Mathers LP. In June 2000, they launched a US tour in support of the album, which was followed by a brief stint in Europe. This soundboard recording captures Steely Dan on July 22, 2000, 13 years ago today, in Manassas, Virginia. The set list includes 3 tunes from the new disc, but primarily consists of their 1970's and 1980's classics. Neither Do It Again or Reeling in The Years, however, are included, as the band seemed intent on avoiding those songs during their tours in the 1990's and 2000's.

In June 1992, Elton John released his 23rd studio album, entitled The One, his first album since having gone through rehab in 1991 for drug and alcohol addiction, as well as treatment to address his bulimia. The disc rose to #8 on the Billboard charts, becoming Elton’s biggest selling album in the US since 1975. In the UK, the disc did even better, climbing to the #2 spot on the charts. Elton launched a European tour in support of the disc, which concluded with this show in Barcelona, on July 21, 1992, 21 years ago today, captured in this soundboard recording.. Neil Young - 1997-07-20 - Englewood, CO (SBD)

In 1996, Neil Young reunited with on again, off again backing band Crazy Horse to record the album Broken Arrow. Filled with hard edged tunes featuring extended jams, Broken Arrow was another in a sting of albums that featured Neil’s electric side. In fact the only album in that decade that highlighted his acoustic folk tunes was Harvest Moon in 1992. Otherwise in the 1990’s, Neil was working with The Horse, Pearl Jam, and Sonic Youth to test just how loud he could play and how much feedback he could generate. Neil and Crazy Horse went on the road support of the disc, including headlining the 1997 HORDE Tour. This soundboard captures Neil on July 20, 1997, 16 years ago today in Colorado. Bruce Cockburn - 1997-07-18 - Huntington NY (SBD)

Bruce Cockburn was born in Canada in 1945, and established a strong following in that country after he began his musical career. He didn’t have much impact in the US until 1980 when his single, Wondering Where The Lions Are, went to #21 on the Billboard charts.His 1984 album Stealing Fire, produced the well know singles Lovers In A Dangerous Time and If I had A Rocket Launcher. While I owned that disc, I soon lost touch with Cockburn’s music, moving on to other bands. I reconnected with his material, however, in the early 1990s, thanks to Jerry Garcia. At a concert at Madison Square Garden in November 1991, I heard Garcia play a wonderful tune called Waiting For A Miracle. Knowing it wasn’t a Jerry original, I did some research, and lo and behold, learned it was written by Cockburn about the revolution in Nicaragua. As long time readers of this blog know, I have always credited the Dead for introducing me to a host of music and styles that I might never otherwise learned about. This soundboard recording captures Cockburn some 6 years later, on July 18, 1997, 16years ago today, in Huntington NY.  Fittingly, he closes the show with Waiting On A Miracle!

James Taylor - 2002-07-17 - Tanglewood, MA (SBD)

Nestled in the scenic Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts, Tanglewood had long been an iconic home for outdoor performances of classical music. All that changed in 1969, when famed rock promoter Bill Graham decided to bring rock and roll to venue. At the time, this was an unheard of decision, a veritable worlds collide moment. The Who and Jefferson Airplane played the venue on August 12, 1969, and rock music has had a permanent place at Tangelwood ever since. In July 17 2002, 11 years ago today, rock and classic music united on the Tanglewood stage, as James Taylor played a set backed by The Boston Pops Orchestra, conducted by John Williams. When local radio stations announced that Billy Joel would play the last concert ever at Shea Stadium - the officially proclaimed LAST PLAY AT SHEA - on Wednesday, July 16, 2008, my sister quickly called, amazingly got through, and came up with 4 seats for herself, her husband, my wife and me. Our celebration at being at such an historic event, however, was short lived. The show sold out so fast that they announced a 2nd one -- for Friday July, 18, 2 days after the first show!!  To say the least, it was quite unfair to those of us who plunked down top dollar for what we were led to believe was the last show at Shea. And it would only get worse when the concerts actually took place. Now don't get me wrong -- Billy Joel put on an incredible show on July 16, 2008. From the opening Star Spangled Banner (what else would you play in baseball stadium) to the closing Souvenir, Billy was as in fine form. In addition, he was joined by special guests John Mayer, Tony Bennett, Don Henley and John Mellencamp. The 4 of us had a great time, even if we did have to leave a little early to catch the last train back to NJ. But there's no doubt that the 2nd show was the one to be at. Guest stars that night included Tony Bennett, Garth Brooks, Steven Tyler, Roger Daltrey and the one and only Paul McCartney. Sir Paul had played the first ever concert at Shea with The Beatles in August 1965 (that one is posted on this blog) and now 43 years later, stood on stage to close the building. Talk about coming full circle. His plane from London landed just 15 minutes before he was to hit the stage and a police escort got him to Shea in the nick of time. His Let It Be was the last song ever played at Shea.  As I'm a huge McCartney fan, I'm still bitter that I missed that historic moment because we were hoodwinked when we bought the tickets. Well, at least I may be able to get to enjoy that final show on film, as it appears a concert movie is about to be released (go here for more info on that). No bootlegs are available of the July 18 concert, but I do have this audience recording of the July 16 show that I attended, just 5 years ago today. The sound quality isn't the best, but it was a magical night, even if it turned out to be just the NEXT TO LAST PLAY at Shea. Download and enjoy!

Those 2 discs yielded tunes such as Someone Like You, Queen Of The Slipstream, When Will I Ever Learn to Live in God, Whenever God Shines His Light, and Have I Told You Lately, all of which now have taken a prominent place in his vast catalog of music. Just about the time Avalon Sunset hit the stores, Van played this show on July 15, 1989, 2 dozen years ago today, in Austria. When I started following the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia in 1977, I didn’t realize at the time the variety of music I would be exposed to and learn to appreciate. Thanks to the Dead, I learned about musicians such as Merle Haggard, Marty Robbins, Buddy Holly, and Sam Cooke, just to name a few, from their covers of Mama Tried, El Paso, Not Fade Away and Good Times. From Jerry Garcia, I gained my first exposure to the legendary reggae artist, Jimmy Cliff, after hearing stellar live versions of The Harder They Come and Sitting In Limbo. If you don’t have the album, The Harder They Come, which is the soundtrack to the movie of the same name, then you are missing out on one of the landmark recordings in rock history. The disc introduced reggae to mainstream audiences, and has been ranked by Rolling Stone, Time, and Blender as one of the best albums of all time. The music has influenced and been covered by acts as diverse as Garcia, Linda Ronstadt, Joe Jackson, Willie Nelson, The Clash and Bruce Springsteen! The same day Sir Paul appeared in Canada, half a world away, Simon & Garfunkel took the stage in Japan. The duo has had an on again, off again relationship throughout their long storied career, though in recent years they seem to be getting along far better. In fact, when Simon re-opened New York's legendary Beacon Theatre on February 13, 2009, after a seven month for a renovation project, he brought out Garfunkel for the encores. The duo sang 3 of their biggest hits to send the crowd home - Sound of Silence, The Boxer, and, quite fittingly, Old Friends. That appearance spawned a tour of Australia, New Zealand and Japan in June and July 2009. This high quality audience recording captures S&G on July 11, 2009, 4 years ago today, in Japan. Jimmy Page & The Black Crowes - 2000-07-10 - Wantagh, NY (SBD)

In October 1999, Jimmy Page and The Black Crowes teamed up for 6 shows, 3 in New York City. 1 in Worcester, MA and 2 in Los Angeles. Each night's set list featured a mix of Led Zep and Black Crowes tunes. The LA shows yield a live album entitled, Live At The Greek. Unfortunately, due to contractual issues, the album could not include any Black Crowes material. The October shows were so successful that Page and the Crowes went on tour together from June to October 2000. This soundboard recording captures them on July 10, 2000, 13 years ago today.
