Twenty years after Live Aid raised millions to "Feed The World", Bob Geldorf launched another massive series of benefit concerts/festivals designed to "Make Poverty History.  Known as Live 8, these concerts, held in 10 countries simultaneously, were timed right before the start of the G8 economic summit in order to gain the attention of world political leaders. Live 8 played a key role in getting the G8 nations to pledge to double aid too impoverished countries from $25 billion to $50 billion by 2010.  This FM broadcast from July 2, 2005, 2 decades years ago today, captures some of the highlights from the London portion of Live 8 festival, including sets from Paul Mccartney, U2, Elton John, Sting, The Who and Pink Floyd, with Roger Waters rejoining David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright for the first time in 24 years.

The Silver Clef Award Winners Concert  - 1990-06-30 - Knebworth, UK (SBD)

Knebworth House in England, an estate from the 15th century, has been the site of major rock festivals since 1974 (go here for more info) when the Allman Brothers drew a crowd of 60,000.  In 1979, Led Zeppelin made their return two live performing with 2 concerts at Knebworth. The Rolling Stones, Queen, Genesis and Van Morrison, as well as dozens of other rock acts, also have graced the stage at Knebworth. On June 30, 1990, 35 years ago today, Knebworth hosted the Silver Clef Awards for outstanding contributions to music in the UK, resulting in an incredible star studded line up, including Eric Clapton, Elton John, Mark Knopfler, Pink Floyd, Robert Plant, Jimmie Page and Sir Paul McCartney. The concert was so big that it was broadcast on the radio world wide. WNEW-FM in NY carried the broadcast, and I filled several Maxell tapes with the historic performances from that show. Of course, then CD's happened, and the tapes sat in a box, as did my 2 Nakamichi tape players! Fortunately, thanks to the digital age, we now have the full FM broadcast of that historic show.

In the end, Gilmour won the legal war and the right to use the name "Pink Floyd" in perpetuity. None of the legal issues, nor the absence of Waters, seemed to matter to the band's fans. The album went to #3 in both the US and UK. Pink Floyd launched a North American in 1987, even before the album was complete and shows sold out instantly. The tour quickly went worldwide and wouldn't end until after 200 performances for an audience of 4.25 million fans. Some years, like 1990, the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame is about reunions, and some years, like 1996, its about those who don't show up - Grace Slick of The Jefferson Airplane, Roger Waters of Pink Floyd, and David Bowie.  Those who did show up performed, with the Airplane playing 3 tunes, and a David Gilmour led Pink Floyd playing Wish You Were Here. Throw in 2 songs from Stevie Wonder, who was on hand to induct Little Willie John, a new tune fron new inductees the Velvet Underground, and Patti Smith adding her own tribute to Lou Reed's seminal band, and it made for quite a night of music.

1970s - #4: In February 1972, Pink Floyd did something very few rocks bands ever have - they played 4 concerts to give the press a sneak peak at 45 minutes of new music they were developing. Those 4 shows were at the Rainbow Theater in London. That suite of tunes, originally entitled Eclipse, would eventually comprise the legendary album Dark Side of The Moon. The Rainbow concerts took place over a year before the album was released, but the reviews provided a preview of what was to come.. Michael Wale of The Times described the piece as "... bringing tears to the eyes. It was so completely understanding and musically questioning." Derek Jewell of The Sunday Times wrote "The ambition of the Floyd's artistic intention is now vast." So too would be the success of Dark Side of The Moon, as the album would sell over 50 million copies worldwide and remain on the Billboard Charts in the US for an almost incomprehensible 741 weeks spanning 15 years from 1973 to 1988. Pink Floyd would eventually play over 90 shows that year, each one previewing the soon to be released masterpiece. This excellent audience recording captures them in Hollywood on September 22, 1972, a half century ago today.

1994: On March 30, 1994, Pink Floyd launched their Division Bell Tour, in support of the album of the same name. This marked the 2nd tour and album since Roger Waters left the band in 1985 and David Gilmour took on the leadership role in the group. The album went to #1 on the Billboard charts as soon as it was released, but the impressive sales were not matched by glowing reviews. In fact, most critics panned the album. Rolling Stone, for example, wrote that Gilmour's guitar solos "were once the band's centrepieces, as articulate, melodic and well-defined as any in rock, but he now has settled into rambling, indistinct asides that are as forgettable as they used to be indelible." The critics had little impact on the fans, who not only bought 3 million copies of the disc in the US alone, but turned out in droves for the live shows. The band played to 5.5 million people in 68 cities; with over $250 million in ticket sales, making it, at the time, the largest grossing tour in history. This soundboard recording captures Pink Floyd on May 5, 1994, 28 years ago today, in Tampa. What no one knew at the time was that it would also be the last Pink Floyd tour. Pink Floyd 1975- Back to Back - #1: After only playing only 27 shows in 1974, all in Europe, Pink Floyd launched a full scale North American tour on April 8, 1975 that ran all the way to June 28. The tour was unique in several respects. First, while the shows were often referred to as the Wish You Were Here tour, the album by that name would not be released until September of that year. The band did play both the Shine On You Crazy Diamond suite (all 9 parts) and Have A Cigar from that soon to be released disc, but they had not yet completed either the title track or Welcome To The Machine. Second, the opening 2 songs of each concert, Raving and Drooling and You've Got To Be Crazy, were actually early versions of Sheep and Dogs, two tunes which would not appear in final form until the release of their 1977 album, Animals. Finally, for the last part of each show, Pink Floyd played the entire Dark Side of The Moon album, the last time the band would do so with Roger Waters. Pink Floyd - 1980-02-01 - Los Angeles CA (SBD) 

Pink Floyd's monumental 1979 double album, The Wall, was a direct outgrowth of Roger Water's experiences during the band's 1977 World tour. As documented in numerous posts on this blog, Waters, during that tour, began to feel more and more alienated from his audience, which resulted in numerous incidents ranging from yelling obscenities to spitting in the face of a fan. The Wall focuses on themes of isolation and abandonment, telling the tale of Pink, a character based on Waters. When Pink Floyd decided to tour in support The Wall in 1980, the band spared no expense in ensuring that the theatrics, staging and sound quality would be unlike any concert ever before performed. The band spent over $1.5 million on lighting, sound equipment, props, etc. before they even played a concert. The shows would include the building of a giant wall across the stage, which would eventually be torn down as the show progressed. Due to the cost and effort involved in staging each individual concert, Pink Floyd only performed The Wall live 31 times in just 4 cities, in 1980 and 1981. Those 31 shows had an enormous impact on rock concerts, however, as noted by the NY Times in its March 2nd, 1980 edition. The Times wrote "The Wall show remains a milestone in rock history and there's no point in denying it. Never again will one be able to accept the technical clumsiness, distorted sound and meager visuals of most arena rock concerts as inevitable. The Wall show will be the touchstone against which all future rock spectacles must be measured." This soundboard recording captures the rhersal for that legendary tour, in Los Angeles on February 1, 1980, 42 years ago today. Perhaps it was no coincidence that The Wall tour would be the last with Roger Waters as a member of the band. Waters not only built a wall across the stage, but also one between himself and his fellow band mates.

1972 - In February 1972, Pink Floyd did something very few rocks bands ever have - they played 4 concerts to give the press a sneak peak at 45 minutes of new music they were developing. Those 4 shows were at the Rainbow Theater in London. That suite of tunes, originally entitled Eclipse, would eventually comprise the legendary album Dark Side of The Moon. The Rainbow concerts took place over a year before the album was released, but the reviews provided a preview of what was to come.. Michael Wale of The Times described the piece as "... bringing tears to the eyes. It was so completely understanding and musically questioning." Derek Jewell of The Sunday Times wrote "The ambition of the Floyd's artistic intention is now vast." So too would be the success of Dark Side of The Moon, as the album would sell over 50 million copies worldwide and remain on the Billboard Charts in the US for an almost incomprehensible 741 weeks spanning 15 years from 1973 to 1988. Pink Floyd would eventually play over 90 shows that year, each one previewing the soon to be released masterpiece. This AM radio broadcast recording captures them in France on December 1, 1972, 49 years ago today.

1980s - #4: Pink Floyd's 1987 album, A Momentary Lapse of reason, was the band's first without long time member Roger Waters. The recording of the album was marked by ongoing legal battles between David Glimour and Waters over the rights to the name "Pink Floyd". In the end, Gilmour won the legal war and the right to use the name "Pink Floyd" in perpetuity. None of the legal issues, nor the absence of Waters, seemed to matter to the fans. The album went to #3 in both the US and UK. Pink Floyd launched a North American in 1987, even before the album was complete and shows sold out instantly. The tour quickly went world wide and wouldn't end until after 200 performances for an audience of 4.25 million fans. This soundboard captures the band during that tour, on September 19, 1987, 34 years ago today, in Philadelphia.

When Pink Floyd launched their Momentary Lapse of Reason tour in 1987 in support of the album of the same name, the band took to the road for the for the first time without Roger Waters, who had left the group 2 years earlier. The run was also their first set of live performances in 6 years, since the The Wall tour concluded in 1981. None of that seemed to bother the fans, who bought $135 million worth of tickets for 197 shows between the opening night of the Momentary Lapse of reason tour on September 9, 1987 and the closing show on July 18, 1989. On the next to last night of the run on July 15, 1988, 32 years ago today, Pink Floyd played on a floating stage set up in the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy. Over 200,000 people attended the show, which was also broadcast live via Satellite TV to an audience of over 100 million in 23 countries. Pink Floyd was forced to make adjustments to their set list and to the timing of certain songs in order to have the concert fit precisely into the allotted TV time. The show almost never took place as The Superintendent of Monuments in Venice claimed that vibrations from the music could damage historic buildings. Pink Floyd had to promise to play at reduced volume in order to gain approval for the show. The city failed to provide appropriate facilities for the concert, resulting in 300 tons of litter and human waste that had to be cleared by the army. Afterward the entire city council resigned, but not before apologizing to the Venice residents and vowing no more such concerts would ever take place. After only playing only  27 shows in 1974, all in Europe, Pink Floyd launched a full scale North American tour in April 8, 1975 that ran all the way to June 28. The tour was unique in several respects. First, while the shows were often referred to as the Wish You Were Here tour, the album by that name would not be released until September of that year. The band did play both the Shine on You Crazy Diamond suite (all 9 parts) and Have A Cigar from that soon to be released disc, but they had not yet completed either the title track or Welcome To The Machine. Second, the opening 2 songs of each concert, Raving and Drooling and You've Got To Be Crazy, were actually early versions of Sheep and Dogs, two tunes which would not appear in final form until the release of their 1977 album, Animals. Finally, for the last part of the show, Pink Floyd played the entire Dark Side of The Moon album, the last time the band would do so with Roger Waters. ENGLAND - Pink Floyd’s 1994 Division Bell tour, after the album of the same name, turned out to be the band’s last. Of course, no one would have suspected it at the time, as the band played 110 dates between March and October, grossing over $250 million. That made it the highest grossing tour in history up to that point. Clearly, the band was as popular as ever. That said perhaps Pink Floyd subconsciously knew the end was near. The band scheduled an unprecedented 14 nights in their home country to end the tour, all at Earl’s Court in London. This FM broadcast captures Pink Floyd on October 20, 1994, a quarter century ago today, at Earl’s Court, half way through their London run. Pink Floyd's 1977 In The Flesh Tour (also known as the Animals tour, after their most recent album), was notable for many reasons. First, the band took a unique approach to the set list, with the first half of the show being the entire Animals disc; the 2nd half comprising the entire Wish You Were Here album; and the encores coming from the Dark Side of The Moon release. Second, the staging featured the famous inflatable puppets and a pyrotechnic waterfall. Third, throughout the tour, Roger Waters had numerous confrontations with the audience, ranging from yelling obscenities to spitting in the face of a fan, all of which would serve as fuel for the band's next album, The Wall. Fourth, this run would be the last worldwide tour with Waters (Waters did play the Wall shows in 1980 but that was a limited to 4 cities), who would eventually leave the band in 1985. This excellent audience recording captures Pink Floyd on the last night of the In The Flesh Tour, in Montreal on July 6, 1977, 42 years ago today. You’ll want to download this one not only for all those reasons, but also for the incredible blues jam that the band performed as the roadies dismantled the instruments in front of the insatiable audience who refused to let the band leave the stadium.
