Other Ones 1998 - Back To Back - #1: After Jerry Garcia's passing in August 1995, the band officially retired the name the Grateful Dead, announcing "that the long strange trip of the uniquely wonderful beast known as the Grateful Dead is over. Although individually and in various combinations they will undoubtedly continue to make music, whatever the future holds will be something different in name and structure." For the next 2 years, the band members pursued individual endeavor, though, they worked collectively to sponsor The Furthur Festival, a summer tour that featured a collection of bands with links to Dead, such as Bob Weir's Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Mystery Box, Hot Tuna, Los Lobos and former GD keyboardist, Bruce Hornsby. Then, in 1998, they decided, in the words of the Blues Brothers, to put the band back together. The 1998 version of the Furthur Festival saw Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Phil Lesh & Mickey Hart reunited to form The Other Ones, which was lifted from the title of the Grateful Dead tune That's It For The Other One. The name was appropriate it reflected that the new band was something different from, yet related to, the Dead. The 1998 version of the Other Ones also included Bruce Hornsby, John Molo, Steve Kimock, Mark Karan and Dave Ellis. This soundboard recording captures the Other Ones in Mountain View on July 24, 1998, 28 years ago today, Download this one, the stop back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.

Bruce Hornsby, of course, served as the Grateful Dead’s keyboardist from September 15, 1990 to March 24, 1992, time which cemented his friendship with Jerry. Hornsby once remarked in an interview that "There are not many people in your life that you connect with so easily and closely, musically, You don't find that with many people. I found that with him." Hornsby was so close with Jerry that he was part of a select group which attended the guitarist's funeral on August 11, 1995. Even before his official stint with the band, Hornsby had significant ties to the Dead. As a teenager, the band he was in frequently covered Grateful Dead tunes. He began incorporating Grateful Dead songs into his live shows from the start of his solo career, a practice which continues until this day. Hornsby often served as the lead-in act for the Dead in the late 1980s, and sat in with them on numerous occasions as a guest after his official departure from the group. Garcia played guitar on several Hornsby compositions on Bruce's albums A Night On The Town, Harbor Lights and Hot House.  In the wake of Jerry Garcia’s death, Hornsby participated in the Further Festivals in 1996 and 1997, then became a member of the Other Ones, the first of many bands featuring former members of the Grateful Dead. Hornsby inducted the Dead into the rock and roll Hall of Fame in 1994, and participated in the Comes A Time show in 2005 in honor of the 10th anniversary of Garcia’s passing. And of course, he played at the Fare Thee Well shows in 2015, celebrating the Grateful Dead's 50th anniversary.

This soundboard recording captures Hornsby three years after Jerry's death, in Red Bank, on August 17, 1998, 27 years ago today.  He pays tribute to his time with the Dead with covers of When I Paint My Masterpiece and Woman Are Smarter, plus by seguing Rainbow's Cadillac in and out of Franklin's Tower, a combo I saw him perform in Morristown on April 12, 1999.

Plant & Page 1998 - Back to Back - #1: Robert Plant and Jimmy Page spent over a decade together as part of one of rock’s greatest bands, the mighty Led Zeppelin, before the band's demise in 1980 after the death of drummer John Bonham. In the mid 1990s, almost 15 years after Led Zep dissolved, Plant and Page reunited for an MTv Unplugged special, which received rave reviews. As a result, the duo not only released the Unplugged sessions as an album entitled No Quarter: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant Unledded, but also agreed to tour in 1995. After that tour, the two went back into the studio and recorded another album, entitled Walking Into Clarksdale. The title referred to a town in the Mississippi Delta, a home of Delta blues music that influenced the duo. Released in April 1998, the album went to #8 on the Billboard charts in the US, and climbed all the way to #3 in the UK. Plant and Page went back on tour in support of Walking Into Clarksdale, touring Europe and North America. This soundboard recording captures the duo durng that tour, in London on March 1 1998, 27 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow and the next day for parts 2 and 3 of this Back To Back set. By the way, at the tour’s conclusion, Robert Plant decided he wanted to pursue some new musical directions. He and Page parted on good terms, each to return to his own solo career.

The Rolling Stones were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.  That class also included  Stevie Wonder, the late great Otis Redding, The Temptations and Dion.

This post captures the Stones some 9 years after that induction, still recording new material and still playing live to thousands of fams worldwide. On September 29, 1997, the Rolling Stones released Bridges to Babylon, their last studio album of the 20th century. While the album met with mixed reviews, it still climbed to #3 of the Billboard charts in the US and certified platinum by November. The Stones launched a year long world wide tour in support of the album, announcing their plans at a press conference underneath the Brooklyn Bridge! The Bridges to Babylon Tour would become the largest Rolling Stones tour to date, exceeding the sales of their record-breaking 1994-1995 Voodoo Lounge Tour. Estimates are that over 4.5 million people attended the 108 shows played during the tour. Along the way, the Stones visited 25 countries on 4 continents. This soundboard recording captures the Stones on March 30, 1998, 26 years ago today, in San Diego, during the South American leg of the Bridges To Babylon tour.

In March 1997, U2 released the album Pop, which continued the band’s experimentation with a variety of musical styles, including alternative rock, techno, dance and electronica. The album employed a variety of production techniques relatively new to U2, including sampling, loops, programmed drum machines and sequencing. The band experienced numerous difficulties in completing the album, missing the original November 1996 release date and barely finishing production before the start of their Pop Mart tour in April 1997. In the end, both the album and the subsequent tour met with mixed reviews from critics and fans. Long time U2 fans did not know what to make of the songs from the new album. While many of the special effects and elaborate staging at the concerts were designed to poke fun at popular culture, the jokes often missed their mark, and simply confused those in attendance. In fact, after the tour ended, U2 announced it would begin “reapplying for the job of best band in the world.” This FM broadcast captures U2 in Argentia on February 6, 1998, 26 years ago today, near the end of the Pop Mart tour. Download this one and judge for yourself whether or not U2 hit or missed the mark with Pop!

This soundboard recording captures the Stones on February 3, 1998, 26 years ago today, in San Diego, near the end of the first North American leg of the Bridges To Babylon tour.

U2 entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2005, along with Buddy Guy, The O'Jays, Percy Sledge, and The Pretenders. Lets just say that the class didn't quite have the star power of other induction groups.
