The show was part of the Meadowlands Summer Fest series of concerts, which believe it or not, took place in the PARKING LOT of Giants stadium. The ever resourceful John Scher, a promoter who never let anything stand in the way of making a buck, through up a stage and some retractable stands in the lot, put a fence around it, and lo and behold, created a concert venue! You can read more about Mr. Scher and other crazy venues used for concerts in my book, TEN RULES OF THE ROAD I LEARNED AT MY FIRST CONCERT. 

In any event, this FM broadcast captures Cockburn about 7 years after I saw him in concert, in Syracuse on June 4, 1999, 27 years ago today.

Knowing it wasn’t a Jerry original, I did some research, and lo and behold, learned it was written by Cockburn about the revolution in Nicaragua. Then in July 1992, I saw Cokcburn lead in for Bob Weir at the Meadowlands Summerfest (a fancy name for a stage and seats set up in the parking lot at Giants Stadium). Cockburn's set ran the gamut of his career, and he joined Bob for the encores of Spoonful and The Weight. This FM broadcast captures Cockburn on his home turf in Canada about 6 months before I saw him live, on February 2, 1992, 33 years ago today.

1985 - Bruce Cockburn was born in Canada in 1945, and established a strong following in that country after he began his musical career. He didn’t have much impact in the US until 1980 when his single, Wondering Where The Lions Are, went to #21 on the Billboard charts.His 1984 album Stealing Fire, produced the well known singles Lovers In A Dangerous Time and If I Had A Rocket Launcher. For Canadian born rocker Bruce Cockburn, the decade of the 1980s was hen he finally gained some mainstream recognition in the United States. His 1980 single, Wondering Where The Lions Are, went to #21 on the Billboard charts. His 1984 album Stealing Fire, produced the well know singles Lovers In A Dangerous Time and If I Had A Rocket Launcher.  he title track of his 1987 compilation album Waiting On A Miracle, later became a stalpe of the Jerry Garcia Band's set lists.  This soundboard recording captures Cockburn live during the final year of the 1980s, in Philadelphia on March 10, 1989, 27 yeara ago today.

Bruce Cockburn - 1994-11-17 - Bozeman, MT (SBD)

I saw Bruce Cockburn as the lead in band for Bob Weir in the summer of 1992.  The show was part of the Meadowlands Summer Fest series of concerts, which believe it or not, took place in the PARKING LOT of Giants stadium. The ever resourceful John Scher, a promoter who never let anything stand in the way of making a buck, through up a stage and some retractable stands in the lot, put a fence around it, and lo and behold, created a concert venue!  In any event, here's a soundboard recording  of Bruce Cockburn just a little over 2 years later, on November 17, 1994, 21 years ago today.

Bruce Cockburn was born in Canada in 1945, and established a strong following in that country after he began his musical career. He didn’t have much impact in the US until 1980 when his single, Wondering Where The Lions Are, went to #21 on the Billboard charts. His 1984 album Stealing Fire, produced the well know singles Lovers In A Dangerous Time and If I Had A Rocket Launcher. While I owned that disc, I soon lost touch with Cockburn’s music, moving on to other bands. I reconnected with his material, however, in the early 1990s, thanks to Jerry Garcia. At a concert at Madison Square Garden in November 1991, I heard Garcia play a wonderful tune called Waiting On A Miracle. Knowing it wasn’t a Jerry original, I did some research, and lo and behold, learned it was written by Cockburn about the revolution in Nicaragua. As long time readers of this blog know, I have always credited the Dead for introducing me to a host of music and styles that I might never otherwise learned about. This FM broadcast captures Cockburn on March 12, 1997, 18 years ago, in Hamburg. If you’re not familiar with his work, download this give it a listen - I think you’ll be very surprised and pleased.
