On August 1, 2017, my wife and Ii went to see Peter Noone and Herman's Hermits in Moristown. We had no expectations going into the show. Tickets were just $25 and we figured if we heard a song or two we liked it would be worth it for a night out. By the end of the show, we were completely amazed by what a consummate showman Peter Noone is.  We were on our feet all night - it was much fun as I ever had at a concert. Noone did all the big hits from the 1960s - Something Good, Henry the Viii, A Must To Avoid, Silhouettes, Can You Hear My Heartbeat, Mrs. Brown and of course, There's a Kind Of Hush.  He also did spot impressions of Mick Jagger and Johnny Cash, told stories of the club scene in the UK in the 60, and had us laughing all night long.  The man even signed autographs in the lobby after the show! You can read a review of the show that we were at here.  By the way, we were scheduled to see him again in March 2020, and then COVID happened. Now we're supposed to see him in October - lets hope we can!

This very good audience recording captures Noone & Herman's Hermits just a few weeks later on August 30, 2017, 4 years ago today, playing a set list almost identical to the show I was at.  It's not exactly the sound quality we normally post here at So Many Roads, but for a rare recording of Peter Noone, I'm glad to make an exception.

NME Poll Winners Concert - 1965-04-11 - London, UK (SBD)

The 1960s - #3: The New Musical Express was the British equivalent of Billboard magazine, posting weekly charts of the best selling singles and albums in the UK. The magazine also hosted an annual concert in which bands voted the best the magazine’s readers would perform and accept their awards. Last April, we posted the 1964 New Musical Express (NME) Poll Winners Concert, which featured performances by both the Rolling Stones and The Beatles. Today, we post the 1965 version of that show, from April 11 of that year, a half century ago today. The Beatles again headline the show, which also features The Rolling Stones, The Moody Blues, Herman’s Hermits, Donovan, Them, The Animals, The Kinks and Dusty Springfield. As someone who shared this recording quipped: “This one-day rock festival is a snapshot of rock the moment before it became rebellious. Bob Dylan hadn’t given The Beatles their first joint yet, The Stones were mop tops and The Who weren’t yet at My Generation.” If this was the swan song of 3 minute pop music, making way for more complex rock music, then what a way to go!
