Bowie & Frampton 1987 #1: In May 1987, David Bowie launched The Glass Spider Tour in support of his album Never Let Me Down. Bowie conceived the tour as a theatrical show, and included spoken-word introductions to some songs, vignettes, and employed visuals including projected videos, theatrical lighting and stage props. On stage, Bowie was joined by guitarist Peter Frampton and a troupe of five dancers, choreographed by long-time Bowie collaborator Toni Basil (Yep that Toni Basil of “Oh Mickey You’re So Fine” fame) With the theme "Rock stars vs Reality," the show was divided into two acts and an encore. Bowie and Frampton had been friends since their teen years, and the guitarist saw the tour as an opportunity to stay in the background and do what he loved best - play guitar! The Beach Boys - 1967-08-25 - Honolulu (SBD)

The Beach Boys 1967 #1; In late August 1967, Honolulu, Hawaii hosted The Beach Boys Summer Spectacular, 2 concerts that in addition to the headliners, included such acts as Dino, Desi and Bill; Paul Revere and the Raiders; Bobbie Gentry; and the Pickle Brothers comedy team. At first glance, all appeared well in Beach Boys land with a concert by the beach that featured songs about summer, girls, and surfing. Behind the scenes, however, the Beach Boys were a band in turmoil. Tensions were high between Brian Wilson and other members of the band as Wilson, determined to create an album comparable to The Beatle's discs Rubber Soul and Revolver, pushed the band's music in new directions. Wilson's first foray in that direction, Pet Sounds, while a magnificent musical work, was a chart disappointment. Recording sessions for the next album, Smile, drove further wedges between Wilson and the rest of the band, who felt the new music was far too complex and removed from their current established style. Mike Love in particular felt that the Beach Boys would lose their core audience if the band continued to follow Brian's new musical direction. Eventually, Smile was shelved in May 1967, but over the next forty years, the legends surrounding the disc grew until it became possibly the most famous unreleased album in the history of popular music. Reports have surfaced that Smile will finally see the light of day this year, but after 4 decades of waiting, we'll all believe it when we see it. This soundboard recording of the August 25, 1967 show, 4 dozen years ago today, features just one song from the Smile sessions, Heroes and Villains. The efforts of Brian to redefine the band, however, can be seen in other songs such as Good Vibrations, recorded right before Smile, and God Only Knows, from Pet Sounds. The Who - 2000-08-21 - Mountain View, CA (SBD)

The Who 2000 #1: After playing 7 shows in late 1999 that highlighted material from Pete Townshend’s Lifehouse project, the band decided to embark on a full scale tour in 2000. By the way, the Lifehouse project was originally intended as a rock opera that would follow Tommy, but instead morphed into Who’s Next, one of the greatest albums in rock history. That said, Townshend continually revisited material from the Lifehouse project throughout his career, including the 1999-2000 tours. In addition to original members Townshend, Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle, the band included Zack Starkey on drums and John Bundrick on keyboards. The Who played 38 dates, beginning on June 6 in New York, and concluding on November 27 at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Elvis Presley - 1969-08-21 - Las Vegas. NV (SBD) 

The King 1969 #1: We promised you 2 Double Shots of the King this month, so today we begin one from 1969! In early 1969, buoyed by the success of his December 1968 televised comeback special, Elvis Presley was ready to make a return to live performing. His manager, Colonel Tom Parker booked Elvis at the then new International Hotel in Las Vegas, which boasted the largest showroom in the city, for 57 shows spread over four weeks beginning July 31, 1969. Since his normal backing band, the Jordanaires, declined to participate, afraid of losing the lucrative session work they had in Nashville. Presley assembled an entire new group of backing musicians, led by guitarist James Burton and including two gospel groups, The Imperials and Sweet Inspirations. The King was nervous, however, as these would be his first series of live shows since 1961, and his first in Las Vegas since a disastrous 1956 engagement. All nerves vanished when Presley took the stage on July 31, 1969 for his 1st Vegas show as the audience of 2,200, including many celebrities, gave him a standing ovation before he even sang a note. Presley was spellbinding, so much so that the next day, Parker was able to negotiate a 5 year deal with The International for Elvis to play each February and August, at a then unheard of annual salary of $1 million. The Beatles - 1965-08-19 - Houston, TX  (early) (SBD)

The Beatles 1965 #1: The 1st half of our Double Shot featuring The Beatles' 1965 US tour takes us to Houston, on August 19, 1965, 5 decades ago today. The Fab Four arrived at Houston International Airport at about 1 am thatmorning amidst the chaos of thousands of over-excited teenagers run amok. Later that day they played two identical 12 song, 35-minute shows, one at 3:00 p.m. and the other at 8:00 p.m. All seats were general admission and priced at $5. Over 10,000 fans attended each show. Like the all the concerts on this tour, the band could barely hear themselves as the sound systems of the day simply  couldn’t keep up with the power of an arena full of screaming teenagers. For those who managed to attend these concerts, it truly was a once in a lifetime experience, as they were the only shows The Beatles ever played in Houston. Download this one, the early show from Houston, then come back later today for the late show from the same day!  One note - while both concerts are soundboards, the sound quality on the late show is much better than that of the early one.

Ringo 2001 #1: In 1989, Ringo launched the first version of his All Starr Band tour, an ensemble where, as Ringo put it it, "everybody on stage is a star in their own right". While Ringo headlined these tours, singing his Beatles and solo material, his supporting band consisted of major players in the rock world, who would perform their own tunes, often with Ringo on drums. In 2001, Ringo presented version #7 of his All Starr Band, featuring Roger Hodgson (from Supertramp), Ian Hunter, Howard Jones, Greg Lake (from ELP & King Crimson) and Sheila E.  This soundboard recording captures Ringo and his guests on August 18, 2001, 14  years ago today, in Fort Worth, TX. Dire Straits - 1985-08-16 - San Antonio, TX (SBD)

Dire Straits 1985 #1 - In the rock world, the years 1985 and 1986 belonged to Dire Straits. In May 1985, the band released the disc Brothers in Arms, which entered the British charts at #1. The album would also climb to #1 on the Billboard charts in the US, spending 9 weeks at the top spot. The disc produced three top 20 singles in the US, So Far Away at #19, Walk of Life at #7 and the monster hit, Money For Nothing, which went to #1. The video for that song went into heavy rotation on MTv in the US, in part since it used the station’s tag line, “I want my MTv” in the backing vocals sung by Sting. The band toured extensively over the next 2 years in support of the album, playing 247 shows in over 100 different cities, including a historic performance at Live Aid. Eric Clapton - 1975-08-14 - Inglewood, CA (SBD)

EC 1975 #1: In March 1975, Clapton had released the album There’s One in Every Crowd, the follow up to his chart topping disc 461 Ocean Boulevard. Unfortunately, EC’s growing dependence on alcohol made recording the album difficult. As a result, There’s One in Every Crowd didn’t match the quality of its predecessor. The disc only rose to #21 in the Billboard album charts and failed to yield any singles that charted. Despite the album’s lack of commercial success, EC spent most of the year on the road in support of it. He spent April in Australia, his first trip to the Land Down Under, and October in Japan, in between touring the US from June to August. This soundboard recording captures EC on August 174, 1975, 4 decades ago this very day.  Download thisone, then stop back on August 17 for part 2 of this Double Shot.

The King 1972 #1: We’re going to bring you 2 Double Shots of The King this month, starting with this one from 1972 and then later on, one from 1969. On July 26, 1972, Elvis began rehearsals for his new Las Vegas engagement on the same day that his separation from Priscilla was officially made legal. The King was devastated by the loss of his lady love, and it showed throughout his month long run from August to September 4 at the Hilton in Vegas. Many of the songs he chose to include in the set list dealt with lost love, including Until It's Time For You To Go, What Now My Love and Its Over. This soundboard recording captures Elvis during the midnight show at The Hilton on August 11, 1972, 43 years ago today. Download this one, then stop back tomorrow the 2nd part of this Double Shot.

Bob Weir & Ratdog - 1995-08-09 - Hampton Beach, NH (SBD)

Ratdog 1995 #2: Twenty years ago today, on August 9, 1995, Jerry Garcia's long strange trip came to an end as he passed away in his sleep, succumbing to heart failure brought on by years of drug abuse. Ironically, he died at Serenity Knolls, a California treatment center for the very demons that finally ended his life. His brother in music, Bob Weir, who had played side by side with Garcia for some 30 years as part of the Grateful Dead, had a concert scheduled for that night in Hampton Beach, NH, on the other side of the continent. Weir would have been forgiven if he had cancelled the show and flew back to the Bay Area upon hearing the news. Instead, he courageously took the stage to pay tribute to Jerry the only way he knew how. As he said at the outset of the show, "Well, if there's anything our friend taught is, it's that music can be used to ease us through the sad times." Despite personal pain and loss, Weir delivered a stunning set of music, adjusting lyrics as he went along, in homage to his lost companion. For example, during Throwing Stones, he chanted "Papa's gone, we are on our own!" Bassist Rob Wasserman turned his solo into a moving rendition of Amazing Grace, which he dedicated to Garcia. The night ended the only way it could have, with Weir singing the sadly appropriate Knockin' on Heaven's Door, a song normally performed by Jerry to close Dead shows. As Weir left the stage, the crowd erupted in cries of "Jerry, Jerry", followed by the "Not Fade Away" chant ("you know our love will not fade away"), that for every Deadhead was a symbol of their love for the band and its music. Those of use who loved the Dead still miss Jerry. Our love will not fade away. Bob did his lifelong friend, and himself, proud that August 9 night. Ratdog 1995 #1: This high quality audience recording captures Bob Weir on August 8, 1995, 2 decades ago this very day, at the New York Summer Stage in Central Park. It was the first concert where Weir's ensemble was officially billed as Ratdog. Incredibly, Ratdog's 2nd performance would be the next night, the very day Jerry Garcia died.  Come back tomorrow to hear that one.
