On February 6, 1967, The Byrds released their 4th studio album, entitled Younger Than Yesterday. The album peaked at #24 on the Billboard charts in the US and reached #37 on the UK Charts.  The album spawned 2 top 40 singles, So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star which reached #29 and My Back pages, which climbed to #30.  The disc would be the last that David Crosby played on, as he was fired from the band later that year.  The FM broadcast captures The Byrds in Stockholm promoting Younger Than Yesterday, on February 28, 1967, 58 years ago today.  Note - date on artwork is incorrect.

On February 28, 2020, James Taylor released the album American Standard, provding his take will  on the Great American Songbook. The disc, his 20th studio album, was Taylor’s first since 2015’s Before This World. American Standard featured Taylor’s version of tunes such as My Blue Heaven, Moon River and Pennies From Heaven” as well as a trio of tracks penned by Rodgers and Hammerstein.  This webcast recording captures him the day before the album's release, in New York, playing tunes from the new disc alongside his own classic lie Shower The People.

The Pretenders - 2000-02-26 - Chicago, IL (FM)

In 1999, the Pretenders released their 7th studio album, entitled ¡Viva El Amor!, which is Spanish for Long Live Love. The album’s cover photo of Chrissie Hynde was taken by Linda Eastman shortly before she passed away in 1998. While not as successful as the band’s prior disc, Last Of The Independents, Viva El Amor generally received good reviews, including a 4 star rating from Melody Maker and an A- grade from Robert Christgau. This soundboard recording captures the band on tour in Chicago in support of the album on February 26, 2000, a quarter century ago today.

On August 29, 1989, the Rolling Stones released the album Steel Wheels, their first disc in 3 years. Two days later, they launched a US tour in support of the album, their first live concerts in the US since 1981, a stretch of 8 years. During that time, stories had abounded that the tensions between Jagger and Richards might lead to the end to the band. So, fans were relieved that the Glimmer Twins had resolved their issues and fired up that the Stones were returning to the stage. The album went to #3 on the Billboard charts in the US, and climbed one spot higher than that in the UK. In addition, The tour was a massive financial success. After completing their North American run in late 1989, the Stones took the tour to Japan in early 1990.  This soundboard recording captures them in Tokyo, on February 24, 1990, 35 years ago today.

The disc was recorded at a rented home in Atlanta, where the band took up residence for several months to work together on the album. The band kicked off their world tour in support of the album on July 5 in Burbank, 3 weeks prior to the disc's official release. The album climbed to #15 on the Billboard charts and received 3 star reviews from both Rolling Stone and All Music. While Peter Frampton is best know for the monumental album Framptom Comes Alive, released in 1976, he has continued to have success as an artist here in the twenty first century.  In February 2007, his disc Fingerprints, won a Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental album. Thagt same month , he peformed on the legendary Chicago based televison show, Soundtage. This soundboard recording captures him about a year after those 2 historic moments,  in Chile, on February 22, 2008, 17 years ago today, playing a set featuring tunes from Fingerprints as well as from his 1970s glory days, not to mention his time with Humble Pie.

As I've mentioned before here on So Many Roads, 1982 was one of the few years between 1977 and 1995 when I didn't see the Grateful Dead in concert. Thanks to recommendations from many of on line music buddies, however, I've spent a lot of time recently listening to tapes from that year, and I've been impressed.  In addition, the blog "Live From The Archives" noted that "1982 found the band leaning toward a simple, more straight ahead rock approach than previous years. Leon Russell - 1999-02-20 - Los Angeles, CA (SBD)

Leon Russell rose to prominence in the early 1970s with a string of accomplishments that any artist would envy.  In early 1970, he organized the backing band for Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour, which included himself as well as host of musicians who had supported Delaney and Bonnie during their 1969/1970 tour. He also released his self titled solo album which included the the first recording of what would become his signature tune, A Song for You, That song has since been covered by more than 40 different artists including the Carpenters, Ray Charles, Peggy Lee, Willie Nelson, Helen Reddy, Whitney Houston, Donny Hathaway, and Christina Aguilera. Also in 1970, Russell played piano on Dave Mason's album, Alone Together, most notably on the song Sad And Deep As You. In March 1971, he produced some tracks for Bob Dylan in including Watching The River Flow and When I Paint My Masterpiece, both of which prominently featured Russell's gospel-flavored piano. In August, he played a set as part of George Harrison's Concert For Bangladesh. He also played on Badfinger's album Straight Up, including piano on the band's hit single, Day After Day. On top of all that, Russell released 2 albums in 1971 - Leon Russell & The Shelter People in May and Asylum Choir II in November.  It was the start of what would become a Hall Of Fame carrer, as Leon was inducted into that institution in 2001. This soundboard recording captures him nearly 30 years after his early 1970s hey day, and 12 years before his Rock Hall Induction, in Los Angeles on February 20, 1999, 26 years ago today.

The Danish Radio Big Band (DR Big Band), often referred to as the Radioens Big Band is a radio ensemble and big band founded in Copenhagen in 1964. The radio station wanted to ensue that jazz was featured on the air, reflecting its presence in the Copenhagen club scene.  Van Morrison has sat in the Danish Radio Big Band on numerous occasions. In 1973, Billy Joel released his 2nd album, Piano Man, which climbed into the Top 30 on the Billboard charts. The title track had similar success on the singles charts, while the tune, Captain Jack, became a staple on FM radio. Over the next 3 years, however, Joel bounced back and forth between New York and Los Angeles, struggling to match the success of Piano Man. His 1976 album Turnstiles, despite containing tunes that today are considered classics, such as Miami 2017, New York State of Mind, Summer Highland Falls, Say Goodbye to Hollywood and Prelude > Angry Young Man, failed to crack the top 100 on the Billboard charts. No one could have expected, therefore, what transpired when Joel released the album The Stranger, in September 1977. The disc went to #2 on the US charts, and sold over 10 million copies, becoming Columbia Records largest selling album up to that time. The album yielded 4 top 25 singles, Just the Way You Are at #3, Movin' Out (Anthony's Song) at #17, Only the Good Die Young" at #24, and "She's Always a Woman at #17. The album also featured the tune Scenes From An Italian Restaurant, which received major airplay on FM stations. The Police reunited after being apart for almost 20 years for a performance at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles. As they took the stage for the Grammy’s, the trio proclaimed "Ladies and gentlemen, we are The Police, and we're back!” The next day, at a press conference at the Whisky a Go Go, they announced they would launch a world tour starting in Vancouver ion May 28. Dead Links, Download Hosts, and Re-Post Requests - Oh My!

Often times, new visitors to So Many Roads ask why numerous old posts have dead links. The answer is simple.  First, given that we have over 5000 shows posted on this site, it is next to impossible to keep all the links active, That would be a full time job and nothing new would get posted. Second, and maybe more important,  the free download hosts that I use simply do not store files for more than 30 to 60 days. And believe me, I have tried countless ones over the year -  from the original Megaupload to Zippyshare to Sendspace to Workupload to Solidfiles to our latest, Mirrored.to.  All have their pro's and con's, but none that I know of keep free files for more than 1 or 2 months day.

If you want to store files for longer, then you have to pay.  And that is simply not happening.  My wife already says this blog takes up too much of my time. She sure as hell isn't letting me pay monthly cloud storage fees.  And even if cost wasn't an issue, paying for storage doesn't mean all links will always stay active. Pay services usually limit how much data you can store in the cloud and may even limit how often a file can be downloaded. And they can cancel your service - deleting all your files and links - at any point if they think you are violating their terms of service.  That just happened to a fellow blogger a few months ago.

All that said, if you are looking for a re-up of a show, feel free to leave a request in the comments section of the post. We have a formal re-post policy here at So Many Roads (see sidebar) which really consists of just 2 things:

1. Please be polite when you ask for a re-post.  Leaving a coment like "Dead Link" is a statement of fact, not a request. I really do appreciate a "please" or a "thanks in advance" as part of your request. A little kindness goes a long way.
2. Please don't ask me to re-post every show by a particular artist. Remember, you're not the only person asking. I can handle requests for a a show a week (and you are welcome to come back the next week and ask for another, etc.), but if you are asking me to re-post dozens of dead links, I simply won't be able to handle that.

On February 18 1993, Paul McCartney launched his New World Tour, which stretched until December and saw Sir Paul, wife Linda, Paul "Wix" Wickens, Blair Cunningham, Robbie McIntosh, and Hamish Stuart visit North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Australia. McCartney was touring in support of his latest album, Off The Ground, so the set list featured 6 songs from the disc - Hope of Deliverance, Peace In The Neighborhood, C'mon People, Biker Like An Icon, Looking For Changes and the title track. The new tunes, however, were not the reason thousands of people flocked to these concerts. No, most folks, like my wife and I , who saw Sir Paul during this tour on June 11, 1993 at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, went to hear the "cute Beatle" reach into his illustrious past. We were not disappointed. From the opening Drive My Car to the closing Hey Jude, over half the set list was dedicated to Beatle tunes. Throw in a few Wings classics such as Band On The Run, Live and Let Die, My Love and the rarely played Another Day, and this was a night to remember. We didn't have the best seats -- not sure if there is any such thing as a good seat in a 60,000 seat stadium - but it hardly mattered. We knew every note and sang every word, knowing this was as close to the Beatles as we would ever get. And who knew at the time that it would be another 9 years before Paul would again tour.  Five days before the start of the tour, on February 13, 1993, 32 years ago today, as captured in this TV soundboard recording, Sir Paul appeared on Saturday Night Live to promote the album and the tour.  He played 2 new tunes from Off The Ground - Get Our Of My Way and Biker Like An Icon - before closing out the night with Hey Jude.

The Bangles - 1986-02-12 - Berlin, Germany (FM)

After gaining some recognition in 1984 with their debut album, All Over The Place, The Bangles found themselves on top of the rock world in 1986 after the release of their second disc, Different Light. The album reached #2 on the Billboard Charts, and spawned four top 40 singles, including Manic Monday, which went to #2 in April, and Walk Like An Egyptian, which climbed to the top of the charts for 4 weeks in December. The band also received extensive airplay on MTV, furthering their popularity. The ride at the top would only last another 2 years, but it was fun while it lasted. This FM broadcast captures The Bangles at their peak, during a European Tour, in Berlin on February 12, 1986, 39 years ago today.

During the early 1990s, Bob Dylan took a break from writing new songs. Instead, he focused on recording traditional folk songs that had influenced his musical style. In late 1992, he released the disc, Good as I Been to You, which included covers of 17 folk songs, He followed that with another album of traditional tunes in 1993, entitled World Gone Wrong. Both discs received positive critical reviews. For example, famed critic Robert Christgau gave a B+ grade To Good As I Been To You and an A- to World Gone Wrong. This soundboard recording captures Dylan on tour during that period, in the London, on February 11, 1993, 32 years ago today. While the set list is filled with Dylan classics, about mid show he plays 2 tunes from Good As I Been To You, Tomorrow Night and Jim Jones.

On February 10, 1971, 54 years ago today, Carole King, who had spent years writing top ten hits for other people with her ex-husband, Gerry Goffin, released her 2nd solo album, entitled Tapestry, and the rest as they say is history. The disc went to #1 on the charts, and stayed there for 15 consecutive weeks, which is still a record for an album by a female artist.  Tapestry spawned two #1 singles for King, I Feel The Eart Move and It's Too Late, while James Taylor, who played on the album, went to the top of the charts with a cover of You've Got A Fried. The disc received 4 Grammy Awards, including album of the year. In addition, King became first solo female artist to win the Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and  Song of the Year. Tapestry has sold over 25 million copies worldwide, spent 313 weeks on the Billboard charts (2nd only to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon) and in 2020, was ranked as the 25th greatest album of all time by Rolling Stone magazine. This FM broadcast captures Carole on the same day Tapestry was released, playing as  set of song from that soon to be historic disc in London for the BBC.  By the way, I highly recommend seeing the musical Beautiful which tells King's story from her days writing songs with Goffin (and their friends, the song writing duo of Barry Mann and Cythia Weil) up through the release of Tapestry.  It's a wonderful retrospective of not just her early carreer, but the amazing music that emanated from the Brill Building in New York in the 1960s. Warren Zevon - 1988-02-08 - Frankfurt, Germany (Ex Aud) 

In August 1987, Warren Zevon released the album, Sentimental Hygiene, his the sixth studio album. but his first in over five years. The disc featured a host of notable guest stars. The track Even A Dog Can Shake Hands was composed by Peter Buck, Bill Berry and Mike Mills of R.E.M., who also recorded an album with Zevon under the name Hindu Love Gods. Michael Stipe, also of R.E.M., appeared on the album, providing vocals and harmony on the song Bad Karma. In addition, the album featured Bob Dylan playing harmonica on The Factory. This excellent audience recoring captures Zevon in Frankfurt, on tour im support of the album, on February 8, 1988, 37 years ago today.
