Allman Brothers 1971 - #1: When it comes to the Allman Brothers and the year 1971, the first thought in everyone’s mind is the legendary album, At Fillmore East, recorded on March 12 and 13th of the year. Just about a month and a half prior to those shows, however, The Allmans rocked the Fillmore West for 4 straight nights to close out January. Today we have the 2nd of those 4 shows, a soundboard recording from January 29, 1971, 44 years ago today. The set list contains many of the same tracks that would be featured on the live disc recorded at the Fillmore East. Elvis 1971 - #1 - On July 31, 1969, Elvis Presley took the stage at The Las Vegas International Hotel (later the Las Vegas Hilton) for the first of a 4-week, 57 show engagement. He received a standing ovation from the crowd of 2200 before he even sang a note. This series of shows broke every existing Las Vegas attendance record and received rave reviews from fans and critics. Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis’ manager, quickly negotiated a contract for his star client to play the International every February and August for the next 5 years, at a salary of $1 million per year! This soundboard, from January 27, 1971, 44 years ago today, captures Elvis on the 2nd night of his 2nd winter engagement as part of that deal. Jerry Garcia 1986 - #1: In early 1986, Jerry Garcia and his long time base player, John Kahn, embarked on a two man acoustic tour, playing about a dozen concerts in small venues in California and the Northeast. According to the Jerry Site (go here), the Garcia/Kahn combo only played a total of 63 shows together, so this tour was quite a unique moment in Jerry’s long and storied career. Each night consisted of 2 sets, each featuring stripped own versions of Garcia’s solo work, Grateful Dead classics, cover tunes and traditional folk standards. The duo rolled into The Ritz nightclub in NY for 2 shows in late January. As best as I can tell, it is the only time Garcia appeared at the Ritz, adding yet another unique feature to this tour. This soundboard captures the 1st night at The Ritz, on January 28, 1986, 29 years ago today. Robert Cray - 1989-01-24 - San Francisco, CA (FM) 

Double Bill At The Warfield - #2: As promised, here;s the 2nd half of our Same Tour, Different Show entry featuring a lead in band and the main act on the same night in San Francisco in 1989. In 1977, Robert Cray formed his first band, with hopes of building a career to match his musical influences Albert Collins, Freddie King and Muddy Waters. The next year, he appeared in the movie, National Lampoon's Animal House as an un-credited bassist in the house party band Otis Day and the Knights. In 1982, he earned his first record contract and began to develop a reputation as a strong live performer. Then in November 1986, he released the album Strong Persuader, and became an “overnight successes”, which of course, was a misnomer if there ever was one. The album climbed to #13 on the Billboard charts, and earned Cray a Grammy. The single from the disc, Smoking Gun, went to #22 on the charts and brought Cray’s music to a wider audience. He released his follow up disc, Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark in August 1988. While it was not quite as successful as Strong Persuader, it still went to #32 on the Billboard charts, This FM broadcast captures Cray on tour in support of Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark in San Francisco, following the lead in set by John Hiatt,  on January 24, 1989, 26 years ago today.

Double Bill At The Warfield 1989 -#1: For this Same Tour, Different Show entry we again get a bit creative as we feature the lead in band and the main act from the same night in San Francisco in 1989! In August 1988, following up on the success of Bring The Family, John Hiatt released his 9th album, Slow Turning. That disc featured such memorable tunes as the title track, Tennessee Plates, Drive South, and It Feels Like Rain. In fact, the album enjoyed even more commercial success than Bring The Family! This FM Broadcast, from January 24, 1989, 26 years ago today, features some of the best songs from both of those albums. By the way, the reason the set list is so short is that Hiatt was leading in that night for another artist who also broke into the mainstream in 1987 and released a follow up album in 1988. Led Zeppelin - 1973-01-22 - Southampton, UK (SBD)

Led Zep 1972 - #2: As mentioned in our earlier post this month, Led Zep's 1973 UK tour was supposed to have produced the the band's first live album. In fact, the Southhampton show, which was not on the original tour itinerary, was specifically added for the purpose of recording that live album. Perhaps because Robert Plant was having vocal issues that night, the band decided not to use the tapes from Southampton for an official release. Instead, the Madison Square Garden shows later that year were used to produce the live album The Song Remains The Same. Fortunately for all of us, however, this soundboard recording of the Southhampton gig, from January 22, 1973, 42 years ago today, is available for all us us to enjoy. Led Zep appeared to be hitting on all cylinders that night, including the first performance of How Many More Times since September 19, 1970! Download this one, compare it to The Song Remains The Same and I’ll think you’ll find that once again, bootleg beats official release!

Stones 2003 - #1 - In October 2002, the Rolling Stones released the album 40 Licks, a greatest hits compilation notable for 2 reasons. First, the 40 song double disc release commemorated the band's 40 year career.  Second, and more significantly, the album was the first to combine the Stones' early releases with Decca alongside their later work that had been released on Virgin Records. While many critics wondered why the band needed yet another compilation, fans flocked to purchase 40 Licks, which reached the #2 position on both the US and UK album charts. The Stones went on tour in support of the album starting in the fall of 2002, and continuing for over 117 shows until September 2003. They played 2 shows at Madison Square Garden in New York in January 2003. Dylan & The Band 1974- #1: As 1974 began, The Band, after headlining shows in 1973, including playing with the Allman Brothers and Grateful Dead at Watkins Glen, went back to an old role - backing up Bob Dylan in concert. Dylan and The Band launched a 40 date, 21 city tour that began on January 3 and ended on February 14. For Dylan, it was his first major tour in 8 years. Demand for tickets was nearly unprecedented in rock history. Tickets were sold by mail order only and tour promoter Bill Graham claimed they received 12 million requests for 500,000 seats. Top ticket prices were $9.50, an extravagant sum in 1974 (and only $340 less than the top ticket prices on today’s high profile tours). Of course, highlights of that incredible tour were released on the double album, Before The Flood. Numerous bootlegs of the tour are also available, such as this soundboard recording from the Boston Garden on January 14, 1974, 41 years ago today. Grateful Dead - 1978-01-11 - Los Angeles, CA (SBD)

Grateful Dead 1978 - #1: In the lore of the Grateful Dead, 1978 has always been a year that receives mixed reviews. As regular readers of this blog know, 1977 was THE YEAR for the Dead with a run of shows that may be unmatched in the band’s history. So, 1978 has always founds itself in the “tough act to follow” position. In truth, the Dead’s playing in 1978 wasn’t quite at the same level as the prior year. For example, their 3 shows at the Pyramids, while historic in terms of the setting, did not feature the band's finest musical moments. Their performance at Winterland on New Year’s Eve, however, is the stuff of legends. My own Dead experiences from 1978 reflect the same dichotomy. On the one hand, I saw them on May 10 and 11 in New Haven and Springfield, 2 shows that were so good they were officially released as Dick’s Picks Volume 25. On the other hand, I attended their September 2 performance at Giants Stadium, the last show before they headed to Egypt, and the band was clearly not firing on all cylinders. That said, when the Dead were good in 1978, they were very good, maybe as good as they were in 1977. This soundboard recording from January 11, 1978, 37 years ago today, captures the band on one of those exceptional nights at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. While Jerry Garcia was battling a case of laryngitis, that didn’t stop him from playing inspired solos and driving the band through incredible versions of Let It Grow, Terrapin Station and St. Stephen. Neil Young 2014 - #1 - In early 2014, Neil Young played 4 sold out shows at the legendary Carnegie Hall in New York.  Designed by architect William Burnet Tuthill and built by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie in 1891, it is one of the most prestigious concert venues in the world.  While usually associated with classical music, some of rock’s biggest stars have graced the stage at Carnegie Hall. The Beatles played 2 nights at the venue in 1964 during their first vist to the US. Bob Dylan played Carnegie both in 1961 and 1963.  Jethro Tull. Chicago, the Beach Boys and Ike and Tina Tuner played the venue in the 1970s, along with a Canadian rocker who sometimes played alongside guys named Crosby, Stills and Nash!  Yep, Neil’s shows in 2014 were actually a return trip to Carneige, as he had played the hall for two night in 1970, on December 4 & 5.  This excellent audience recording captures the 3rd of Neil’s 4 shows in 2014, on January 9, just a year ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow when we complete this Same Tour, Different Show entry by bringing you night 4 from that run.

Led Zeppelin - 1973-01-07 - Oxford, UK (SBD) 

Led Zep 1973 - #1 - On November 30, 1972, Led Zeppelin launched a 25 date tour of the UK, which ran until January 30, 1973, their first shows in their home country in just about a year. The original 110,000 tickets, priced a £1, sold out within four hours of the box offices opening on November 10. This run of shows holds an interesting place in Led Zeppelin's history for several reasons. First, it was the last full fledged tour of the UK by the band. The only subsequent shows that they would play in England prior to John Bonham’s death in 1980 would be 5 nights at Earl’s Court in 1975 and 2 performances at Knebworth on 1979. Second, the tour would also be the last time that the band played small venues, such as the 1800 seat New Theatre in Oxford.. The arena/stadium era would commence for Led Zep right after these shows. Finally, this tour was supposed to have produced the first Led Zep live album, however, the band eventually decided to use the Madison Square Garden performances later that year for the disc The Song Remains The Same. This soundboard recording from January 7, 1973, 42 years ago today, captures Led Zep on in Oxford, about ½ way through the tour! January's Theme At So Many Roads

We'll kick off  2015 with an old favorite  - a theme we call Same Tour, Different Show. In other words, for each artist we post in January, we’ll feature 2 or more concerts from the same tour. Often times, those shows we’ll be back to back to back nights, or even 2 shows from the same day (old guys like me remember the days when bands played early and late shows at places like the Fillmore East, The Palladium and The Capital Theatre).
