Here's part 2 of our 1977 Grateful Dead Same Tour, Different Show entry, a HQ Audience tape from February 27, 1977, 37 years ago today.  While yesterday's show gets a ton of attention not only for being the first from the Dead's finest year, but also because of the unique set list, today's concert rarely ever gets mentioned in the tales of 1977.  Perhaps, in part, that's because of the large shadow the February 26 show casts  Or maybe it reflects the fact that no soundboard exists from the show.  But if you check out the comments for this performance at internet music archive, it appears this one is an overlooked and underplayed gem.  Download it and see( and hear) for yourself.

Grateful Dead - 1977-02-26 - San Bernadino (SBD)

I saw the Grateful Dead for the first time on Saturday, September 3, 1977 in Englishtown, NJ. It was a small, intimate gathering -- me, my buddies and another 150,000 or so other folks. To this day, it's the largest concert in NJ history. Somehow, among all those people, my friends and I wound up in a picture on the front page of the Sunday Bergen Record. (Not quite a picture on the cover of the Rolling Stone, but it will have to do). It was an incredibly hot afternoon, but not as hot as the music! The show has been released as Dick Pick's #15, one of series of CD's devoted to some of the band's best performances, as chosen by the Dead's tape archivist, Dick Latvala. The Englishtown concert, which started me on my own 18 year "long strange trip" of attending Grateful Dead concerts (about 70 in all), was just one highlight in what many consider the band's finest year of live performances. In fact, the band came flying out of the gate in 1977, with a superb show on February 26, 37 years ago today, at the Swing Auditorium in San Bernadino, CA. Opening with Terrapin Station, the title track of their latest album, the band was in a zone that continued not only that night, but also the entire year. Neil Young - 1970-02-25 - Cincinnati. OH (SBD)

Welcome to part 2 of our 1970 Neil Young Same Tour, Different Show entry.  Neil Young spent the last half of 1969 and the first month of 1970 on tour in the US and Europe with CSNY. After a single solo acoustic show on February 19 (part 1 of this entry that we brought you 6 days ago), Neil gathered up his original backing band, Crazy Horse, and immediately hit the road again! The tour took him to many of the classic venues of the time, such as the Fillmore East, The Electric Factory and The Boston Tea Party. Night one of the tour, however, found Neil and Crazy Horse in Cincinnati, on February 25, 1970, 44 years ago today. This soundboard recording captures Neil playing many of his early classics, from lilting acoustic versions of songs such as Sugar Mountain and Don’t Let it Bring You Down, t0 searing electric renditions of Down By The River and Cinnamon Girl. Grateful Dead - 1974-02-22 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)

From October 16 to 20, 1974, the Grateful Dead played their "retirement shows" at Winterland, concerts that were immortalized in the Grateful Dead movie, released in 1977, and the soundtrack, a 5 CD set released in 2005.  Those shows were not just some of the best of the year, but also of the band's entire career.  In fact, talk to any Deadhead, and they might tell you that every show that year was "the best ever".  In addition to the October Winterland CDs, 4 of the Dick Pick's series, a Road Trip volume and 2 Dave's Pick's releases have all been dedicated to 1974.  The band introduced the Wall of Sound in 1974, an enormous concert speaker system designed to be distortion-free while serving as its own monitoring system. The Wall of Sound was the largest sound system developed up to that point with over 600 speakers that could unleash a total of 26,400 watts of audio power. Four tractor trailers and 21 crew members were required to haul and set up the 75-ton Wall. The system was so expensive that while the band came out of retirement in 1976, the Wall never did!  When the band started touring in 1974, however, with 3 shows at Winterland, the same venue where the year would end (providing a come full circle sense of closure), the Wall was not yet ready for prime time.  It wouldn't be introduced until a show at the Cow Palace on March 23.  With or without The Wall, the Dead were in peak form in 1974.  This soundboard recording captures show #1 from that year on February 22, 1974, 4 decades ago today.  Download this one now, then come back tomorrow and the next day for installments 2 and 3 of this Same Tour, Different Show entry.

Neil Young has always marched to the beat of his own drum, never conforming or settling when it comes to making music or performing live. Basically, you never know what's next from Neil, as is evident in our Same tour, Different Show entry from 1970.  In January 1970, Neil finished up a tour with CSNY, a run so troubled that the band wouldn't go back on the road again for 4 years.  Less than a month later, he launched a tour with Crazy Horse, and we'll bring you the opening night of that run in just a few days.  In between, he played a solo acoustic show for KQED television on February 19, 1970, 44 years ago today. Only Neil could find himself playing in one of rock's first super groups, performing a solo acoustic show, and then embarking on a run of shows backed by the ferocious power of The Horse, all in the span of 30 days.  Download this one now to hear acoustic Neil, then come back in a few days to hear Mr. Young plug in and turn it up load.

The Kinks - 1977-02-18 - Santa Monica, CA (late)(FM)

In 1976, The Kinks left RCA records to join Arista.  With some encouragement from their new label, the band changed artistic direction, relinquishing the theatrics of their previous albums to return to their rock roots. They eliminated the brass section ad back up singers, returning the group to a 5 piece rock band.  The new stripped down line up released its first album, Sleepwalker, on February 12, 1977.  The disc, which in addition to the title track featured such soon to be Kink's classics as Jukebox Music, Life Goes On, and Life on the Road, went to #21 on the Billboard charts, the band's first commercial success in almost 7 years.  The band went on tour in support of the album, including this show from Santa Monica on February 18, 1977, 37 years ago today.  Download this FM broadcast, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Same Tour, Different Show entry from the Kinks.

Pink Floyd - 1972-02-17 - London, UK (Aud)

Over the next 4 days, as part of our Same Tour, Different show theme, we're going to bring you 4 posts from Pink Floyd at the Rainbow Theatre in London in February 1972.  Right up front, We want you to know that the sound quality on these shows, for the most part, isn't up to our usual standard.  While the final show may be an FM source, the other 3 are audience tapes ranging from ok (show #2) to verry good (shows #1 and #3 - hard to tell which is better, I like #3 but friends of mine prefer #1).  So, why post them then? Well, these 4 shows are historically significant as Pink Floyd gave the British press their opportunity to hear 45 minutes of new music that the band had been developing. This suite of tunes, originally entitled Eclipse, would eventually comprise the legendary album Dark Side of The Moon.  The Rainbow concerts took place over a year before the album wad released, but the reviews provided a preview of what was to come.. Michael Wale of The Times described the piece as "... bringing tears to the eyes. It was so completely understanding and musically questioning." Derek Jewell of The Sunday Times wrote "The ambition of the Floyd's artistic intention is now vast."  So too would be the success of Dark Side of The Moon, as the album would sell over 50 million copies worldwide and remain on the Billboard Charts in the US for an almost incomprehensible 741 weeks spanning 15 years from 1973 to 1988. Dire Straits - 1979-02-16 - Cologne, Germany (FM)

When Dire Straits released their self-titled debut album in February 1978, the music industry barely paid attention. Fortunately for the band, Karin Berg, working at Warner Brothers in New York did. With her backing, the band was booked to tour as the opening act for the Talking Heads. The success of that tour led to a US recording contract with Warner, followed by the release of their debut album worldwide. The disc would reach the top 10 in every country in Europe, while climbing to number 2 on the US charts. In early 1979, they launched their first headling tour, playing several warm up shows in Europe beofre heading to North America for the first time. Sultans of Swing, the single from their album which was released during that tour, scaled the charts to reach number four in the United States and number eight in the United Kingdom. Welcome to the 3rd installment of our 1975 Led Zep Same Tour, Different show series, this one a soundboard recording from the Nassau Coliseum on February 14, 1975, 39 years ago this day. The 1975 tour coincided with the release of the band's latest album, Physical Graffiti. The double album would sell 8 million copies and hit number 1 on both the US and UK charts. Physical Graffitti’s impact was so great that every previous Led Zep disc climbed back into the Billboard top 200 soon after it was released. Rolling Stone ranked the album at #70 on its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time while The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame included the disc in its The Definitive 200: Top 200 Albums of All-Time. Welcome to part 2 of our 4 part 1975 Led Zep Same Tour, Different show series, a soundboard recording from the Nassau Coliseum on February 13, 1975, 39 years ago today. When Led Zeppelin launched their North American tour on January 18, 1975, it had been almost 2 years since their last tour, the longest break from performing that the band had taken at that point in their career.  The tour had a bit of a rocky start, as guitarist Jimmy Page was suffering from a broken finger that forced him to use a three finger playing technique during many of the early shows. In addition, Robert Plant contracted a bad case of the flu early in the tour, causing the cancellation of one show and negatively affecting his singing during several others.  The band also needed to work out the kinks associated with incorporating new material from their soon to be released album, Physical Graffiti, into their set list.  When they reached New York in February, however,  the band seemed to have overcome all those issues, playing as powerfully as they had at any point in their long storied career.  Download this one now, then come back tomorrow and on February 14 and 16 for 2 more from Led Zep in 1975.

Eric Clapton - 1978-02-11 - Santa Monica CA (SBD)

While we wait for the 2nd half of our 1982 Eric Clapton Same Tour, Different show entry (coming n February 18), we'll bring you some Slowhand from 1978.  In November 1977, Eric Clapton released the album Slowhand, the title taken from his well known nickname.  The album was both a critical and commercial success, reaching #2 on the Billboard charts and drawing comparisons to his masterful 461 Ocean Boulevard disc.  The disc included soon to be Clapton standards such as Cocaine, Lay Down Sally, Wonderful Tonight and The Core.  In early 1978, EC took the road in support of Slowhand,  launching a North American tour on February 1.  This soundboard recording catcnhes him in Santa Monica on February 11, 1978, 3 dozen years ago today.  Download this one now, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd part of this Same Tour, Different show entry.  FYI - neither track 5 on CD 1 or CD 2 is included as they were officially released as part of the "Crossroads 2: Live in the Seventies" box set.
