1960s - #1: Founded in 1957, Memphis-based Stax Records was synonymous with Southern Soul - a distinctive blend of funk, gospel and R&B that brought listeners across America together at a time of racial conflict and political unrest. From humble beginnings in a garage the label went on to produce some of the greatest soul artists: Otis Redding, Carla Thomas, and Sam and Dave, to mention a few/ About 10 years after the label's founding, there was a huge surge of interest in soul music in Europe. The label realized this and sent the Stax Revue to tour Europe in the summer of 1967. As was typical for the times,, instead of having individual acts doing perform their own shows,, the tour featured a host of artists from the label performing short sets on the same bill.  This sounboard recording capturs the Stax Volt Revue, headlined by Otis Redding and Same & Dave, in Oslo, on April 7, 1967, 57 years ago today.  NOTE - thanks to where this was originally shared - Albums That Should Exist.

Here's our 2nd of 3 posts dedicated to the Monterey Pop festival. This one features soundboard recordings from the afternoon and evening sessions session from Saturday, June 17,  1967, 55 years ago this very day. This afternoon session featured a host of San Francisco bands, such as Steve Miller, Country Joe & The Fish, and Quicksilver Messenger Service. But it was Janis Joplin who stole the show with her breathtaking performance that day. For the evening session, The Byrds and The Jefferson Airplane were the 2 biggest acts on the bill, but it was Otis Redding, singing to the "love crowd" in his first major appearance in front of a predominately white audience, who turned in a perfromance for the ages. Tragically, Otis died just 6 month's later, at the age of 26.

Otis 1967 - Back To Back - #1: Otis Redding established himself with the general public as a musical superstar with his show stopping performance at the Monterrey Pop Festival in May 1967, a set we posted previously on this blog.  Being the only soul artist on the bill at Moterrey reflected Redding's entire carrer - he was constantly a trailblazer, doing what no one before him had done.  According to the website for The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, his name was "synonymous with the term soul, music that arose out of the black experience in America through the transmutation of gospel and rhythm & blues into a form of funky, secular testifying." He was president of his own publishing firm, Redwal Music Co., Inc., where he was very active in the company’s operation and directly responsible for the company’s leadership in the music publishing field.  Otis also had his own Jotis Records label and was responsible for mentoring soul man Arthur Conley (of “Sweet Soul Music” fame) as one of its original artists.  At a time when it may not have been considered politically correct, Redding had a white manager, Phil Walden, and a racially mixed band.  This soundboard recording of the early show from from April 10, 1966, 56 years ago today, represents another of Redding's pioneering efforts.  Download this show to hear the King of Soul as he branched out beyond traditional venues for black artists, such as the Apollo Theater in Harlem, to play the legendary rock club, the Whiskey A Go Go on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood.  Then stop back later today for the 2nd half of this set.

Otis Redding established himself with the general public as a musical superstar with his show stopping performance at the Monterrey Pop Festival in June 1967, a set we posted previously on this blog. Being the only soul artist on the bill at Monterrey reflected Redding's entire career - he was constantly a trailblazer, doing what no one before him had done. At a time when it may not have been considered politically correct, Redding had a white manager, Phil Walden, and a racially mixed band. This soundboard recording captures Otis just weeks before his legendary performance at Monterrey Pop, on June 4, 1967, 52 years ago today.

Otis Redding/Allman Brothers Connections
  • According to Greg Allman, Otis Redding is the reason he and brother Duane formed a band.  In an interview with David Rolland of the Palm Beach New Times, Greg explained that when he was 12 years old, his mother "dropped my brother and me off at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium to see what they called a revue, which was a bunch of different acts doing about five songs apiece. Me and my brother sat way up in the cheap seats, and we were just blown away by what we saw. Jackie Wilson was the headliner, but I'll never forget how Otis Redding just owned the stage. That music hit us hard, man; we were mesmerized. My brother turned to me and said, "We've gotta be part of this, little brother." And that's when it all started. I got the fever that day, and it's never left me, man"
