Another year in Grateful Dead history we've neglected to some extent here at So Many Roads, possibly because I only saw the band one time that year. So today, we close our month long tribute to the Dead with a soundboard recording from July 31, 1983, 32 years ago today.

1983 in Grateful Dead History

• In February 1983, the Dead establish Grateful Dead Ticket Sales to sell concert tickets directly to long-time fans via mail order. The first GDTS mail order show was March 29, 1983. GDTS would sell 24,000 tickets its first year. By 1994, that number would rise to over 600,000. 
• On April 16 and 17, Stephen Stills sits in with The Dead at two shows at the Meadowlands Arena in New Jersey .(I was at the first of those 2!) 
• The tune Hell In A Bucket makes its concert debut on May 13, another song that would not appear on a studio album until In The Dark was released in 1987. 
• The Dead play St. Stephen at Madison Square Garden (the line "in and out of the Garden he goes" makes the crowd go nuts), the first time they had played the tune since January 10, 1979, 4 years and 352 shows prior! The band plays the tune again on October 14 and October 31, then. unfortunately, retires it for good. 
• The only live show from 1983 that has been officially released is October 14.

The Band - 1973-07-31 - Jersey City, NJ (SBD)

When it comes to artists who have collaborated with Grateful Dead, The Band often springs to mind and with good reason. The Band was part of the Festival Express in 1970, and members of the group jammed with the Dead during the train rides between shows. The Band, along with the Allmans, spent much of the summer of 1973 touring together, including the mammoth show at Watkins Glenn on July 28 where all 3 bands jammed together to end the day. Rick Danko of The Band sat in with The Dead during their 3rd set on December 31, 1983, while all the members of The Band joined the Dead for the encore on June 21, 1984. One last note, while The Band did not play with the Dead on either night, they were the lead in act for the Dead’s final 2 shows, on July 8 and 9, 1995. We celebrate the relationship The Band had with the Dead with this soundboard recording of The Band o in Jersey City from July 31, 1973. 42 years ago today, on a day where they fittingly, led in for the Dead!

Grateful Dead - 1973-07-28 - Watkins Glen, NY (SBD)

No concert event in the US has ever drawn more fans than the 600,000 or so that turned out on July 28, 1973, 42 years ago this very day, for The Summer Jam at the Watkins Glen Race Course. They arrived to see 3 of the great North American rock bands of all time – The Band, The Allman Brothers and The Grateful Dead. Despite the heat, rain, mud and general difficult conditions, the enormous crowd was not disappointed as the 3 bands played incredible sets. The Grateful Dead performed first, playing two long sets that lasted almost 4 hours. The Band followed the Dead with one two-hour set, however, their performance was cut in half by a drenching thunderstorm, in a scene again reminiscent of Woodstock. During the storm, keyboardist Garth Hudson played his signature organ improvisation ,The Genetic Method. When the rain finally let up, the full Band joined Hudson on stage, and segued into Chest Fever. Finally, the Allman Brothers Band performed for three hours, playing almost all of their classics. Following the Allmans' second set, members of all 3 groups joined on stage for an hour encore jam. The encore featured spirited renditions of Not Fade Away, Mountain Jam, and Johnny B. Goode. The volume on the vocals are a bit lower than I’d like, but the instruments sound great. In any event, you’ll want to have this incredible performance for your collection.

1982 in Grateful Dead History

• After an 8 year hiatus, Phil resumes singing, now in his natural range.
• The Dead play at the first US Festival, the brainchild of Apple Co-founder Steve Wozniak, on Sunday, September 6. The band is the first act of the day, and its billed as Breakfast with The Grateful Dead, a very unusual time slot for a band renown for their late in the night jams!
• The Dead begin playing Touch Of Grey, West LA Fadeaway and Throwing Stones in concert, 3 tunes that would not appear on a studio album until the release of In The Dark in 1987.
• Ten years after the legendary Creamery Benefit show on August 27, 1972, the Dead return to Veneta Oregon for a concert on August 28, 1982. 
• Live concerts from 1982 have been officially released include August 6 and August 7.

Grateful Dead - 1973-07-27 - Watkins Glen, NY (Sound Check) (SBD)

Every rock fan knows the story of Watkins Glen, the concert attended by over 600,000 fans who showed up on July 28, 1973 to see and hear The Band, The Allman Brothers and The Grateful Dead.  (And if you don't, you'll learn all about it tomorrow!) Today's post, however, captures the Dead the night before that concert in a performance that has become the stuff of legends. Thousands of fans had descended upon Watkins Glen by July 27, 1973, 4 decades today, camping out overnight in anticipation of the next day's festivities. Robbie Robertson of the Band requested to do a sound check, but was concerned about the crowd in front of the stage. Promoter Bill Graham gave the ok to go ahead with the sound check, so the The Band ran through a few numbers to the delight of the audience. The Allmans did their sound check next, playing One Way Out and Ramblin' Man. Finally it was The Grateful Dead's turn for a sound check. Instead of playing one or two songs and calling it a night, the Dead performed 6, then announced they were going to take a short break, but be right back. They returned to play 5 more tunes, including a 21 minute jam that some Deadheads feel is the finest improvisational work that the band ever performed (go here for more details). Yet, another amazing chapter in their long strange trip, a sound check that turned into a 2 set marathon. 1973 in Grateful Dead History

• The year opens on a solemn note when original band keyboardist, Ron “Pigpen” McKernan dies of liver failure on March 8, at the age of 27.
• As a tribute to Pigpen, The Dead release a live album entitled History of the Grateful Dead, Volume One (Bear's Choice). The album was recorded by Owsley “The Bear Stanley and features tunes that highlight Pigpen’s contributions to the band.
• The Dead and the Allman Brothers play2 legendary shows at RFK Stadium on June 9 and 10.
• As detailed above, on July 28, The Dead, The Allmans and The Band play in front of a crowd of over 600,000 at Watkins Glen in New York, the largest attended concert in US history. 
• Bruce Hornsby attends a Grateful Dead show at William and Mary College on September 11. 
• The Dead release the album Wake Of The Flood in November, the first featuring Keith & Donna Jean Godchaux. As a result, the album has a much jazzier feel to it than previous discs.
• Wake Of The Flood is also the band’s first release on their own label, Grateful Dead Records. The album includes such classic tunes as Eyes Of The World, Weather Report Suite and Stella Blue. 
• The Dead play 3 incredible shows at Winterland on November 9, 10 and 11, which are officially released as a box set in 2008. 
• In addition to the 3 Winterland shows, the following live concerts from been officially released: February 26, February 28, October 19, November 17, November 21, November 30, December 2, December 10 and December 19.

Allman Brothers Band - 1970-07-26 - Stonybrook, LI (SBD)

If any band is thought of as the kindred spirit of the Grateful Dead, it’s probably the Allman Brothers. That’s somewhat ironic as the Dead are the spiritual founders of the San Francisco sound, while the Allmans were the pioneers of Southern rock.  Yet the similarities can’t be overlooked:

• both were quintessential jam bands
• both were renowned for their seemingly never ending concerts
• both had 2 drummers
• both would suffer tragic losses in the early 1970s yet rise to new heights
• both were tied to Bill Graham and played legendary shows at The Fillmore’s East & West
• both had roots in blues, country, jazz, folk and bluegrass, and
• both shared the bill on numerous occasions.

For example, we brought you a show earlier this month from July 7, 1969 when Greg and Duane joined the Dead on stage. In February 1970, for example, the Dead and Allmans shared the bill at the Fillmore East, we Duane and Greg joined the Dead on stage during the late show on February 11.  In June 1973, the 2 bands played 2 shows at RFK Stadium and collaborations abounded. On June 9, Bob Weir sat in with the Allmans for their encore of Mountain Jam. The next day, The Allmans. along with Merle Saunders, sat in with the Dead for an incredible 8 song 3rd set. Of course, on July 28, The Dead, The Allmans and The Band all shared the stage to close out the Watkins Glenn concert. And on New Year’s Eve 1973, Jerry Garcia and Bill Kreutzman sat in with the Allmans for part of their 2nd and all of their 3rd set to ring in the new year.  So, in honor of all those collaborations, we bring you this soundboard of the Allmans from July 26, 1970, 45 years ago today, at Stony Brook.

By the way, the Allmans must have really enjoyed playiing Stonybrook.  In addition to this concert, the Allman's played Stony Brook 3 other times that year on April 28, July 10 and October 23. Can you imagine 4 opportunities to see Duane, Greg and the entire Allman's contingent 4 times in 6 months at small college campus right outside New York City? I'm betting prices were under $5 a ticket! Oh well, if we can't bring back those intimate shows at bargain basement prices, at least we can still enjoy the incredible music, by downloading great bootlegs such as this one.

30 Trips Around The Sun Box Set: Removing Posts

As many of you might have heard, the Grateful Dead are releasing an 80 CD box set commemorating their 50th anniversary.  The collection, entitled 30 Trips Around The Sun, will include 30 complete live shows, one for each year the band was together.

In keeping with our policy at So Many Roads to only post shows that are not released commercially, we will be deleting any and all shows that we may have posted that will be included in the box set. Last day you'll be able to find those links here is August 8.

The complete list of shows included in 30 Trips Around The Sun is provided below.  While we clearly have not posted all of them, off the top of my head I can think of a few we do have up on this on this site, including 09/18/1974, 09/28/1975, 04/25/1977, 06/24/1985,  9/18/1987. 07/03/1988 and 9/10/1991.  So get those while you can because in about 2 weeks the links to those and any others from the box set will be gone!

And, yes I know only a limited number of these sets will be sold and that the shows won't be sold individually, but our policy is firm - no commercially released shows are posted at So Many Roads. Just helps keeps us safe from shut down.

Missing Years In Our Grateful Dead Retrospective: 1990s

As noted in our post announcing our July theme, we have concerts this month from every year in Grateful Dead history except the following 7:

• 1965, 1967 & 1968: no July soundboards available
• 1975 & 1977: the band did not play in July those 2 years
• 1991 & 1993: the band did not play in July in those 2 years 

Since we want to make our Grateful Dead retrospective as complete as possible, we’ll bring you key moments in each of those 7 years in a series of 3 posts - one dedicated to the 3 missing years from the 1960s, one dedicated to the 2 missing years in the 1970s and one dedicated to the 2 missing years from the 1990s. So, with the post we cover the 1990s, after 2 posts earlier this month that covered the 1960s and 1970s.

1991 in Grateful Dead History

• The Dead release One From The Vault, a cd featuring the entire August 13, 1975 show from the Great American Music Hall. It’s the first archival, full concert release and will eventually spawn such series as Dick’s Picks and Dave’s Picks.
• On November, 3. The Dead play as part of the tribute concert to Bill Graham, the legendary promoter who died in a helicopter crash a few days earlier. John Fogerty & Neil Young sit in for part of the Dead’s set. 
• The Dead play their final New Year’s Eve concert, dedicating it to Bill Graham who had hosted and participated in what had been an almost annual tradition from 1966 to 1991. 
• Live shows from 1991 that have been officially released include: June 14, June 20 and September 25. 

1993 in Grateful Dead History

• The Grateful Dead are recognized as the highest grossing concert art in the US in 1993 
• On April 12, 1993, Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, and Vince Welnick sing the national anthem before the San Francisco Giants home opener. It is the only time Garcia sings the National Anthem at an event. 
• On November 1, the Dead release Dick’s Picks, Volume 1. Dick Latvala, the band’s archivist, would be the architect of this series, selecting legendary concerts for official release. Dick’s Picks would eventually encompass 36 volumes, though more than ½ of them would be released after his death in 1999. Dave Lemieux took over stewardship of Dick’’s Picks after Latvalas’s passing and guided it to its end in 2005. The series was revived in 2012, as Dave’s Picks, named after Lemieux. 
• The only live shows from 1993 that have been officially released are May 26 & 27.

Garcia continued that magic over the summer, playing so well that his July 29 show, as well as part of his July 30 concert, have been officially released. This soundboard captures him several weeks earlier, on July 23, 1977, 38 years ago today, in Berkeley. Download this one, then come back on July 30 for another one from 1977.

As fellow San Francisco bands, with ties to promoter, Bill Graham, the Grateful Dead and Santana often found themselves on the same bill in the 1960s and 1970s. For the Grateful Dead, 1990 was the middle year of a 3 year renaissance (1989-1991) where the band was playing almost as well as it had back in the glory days of the 1970s. That claim is supported by the fact that every Spring 1990 show has been officially released, making it only the 2nd tour, after Europe 72, released in its entirety. To celebrate 1990, we’[l bring you 3 shows in the next 3 days, featuring the Dead’s run at Tinley Park. We start today with a soundboard recording from July 21, 1990, 25 years ago this very day. 1990 in Grateful Dead History

• The Dead celebrate the band’s 25th anniversary!
• As seemed to always be the case, with celebration came sadness, as Brent Mydland became the 3rd keyboard player for the band to die tragically, overdosing on July 26, at the age of 37.
• Bruce Honsby and Vince Welnick join the band in September, both on keyboards, replacing Mydland. 
• In keeping with the custom of the day, the Dead release 3 music videos, for Built To Last, Just A Little Light and We Can Run. 
• The Spring tour features the Dead consistently playing at levels that remind fans of their peak in the 1970s. Two box sets will eventually be be released, one in 2012, and one in 2014, that contain every show from that Spring 1990 run. 
• Branford Marsalis sits in with the Dead for the first time during that Spring tour, on 3/29./1990.
• Late in the year, The Dead release a double live album, Without A Net, which features highlights from shows played between October 1989 and April 1990. In recent years, numerous live shows from that period have been released in their entirety, rendering Without A Net superfluous. 
• In addition to the entire Spring tour (16 shows between March 14 and April 3) the following live concerts from 1990 have been officially released: June 16, July 8, September 16, September 18, September 19, and September 20, ( I was at both the 9/18 and 9/20 shows).

In the late 1980s, the Neville Brothers sat in with the Dead on numerous occasions. The most famous might be their appearance on December 31, 1987, when they joined the Dead for the 3rd set that included Woman Are Smarter, Iko Iko, Day-Om Do You Wanna Dance and Knockin on Heaven's Door. They also joined the Dead on stage on February 12, 1986, December 16, 1986, December 30, 1986, July 6, 1987, October 18, 1987 and July 10, 1989 (a show I was at.). To celebrate those collaborations, here’s a soundboard recording of the Neville Brothers from July 20, 1995, 3 decades ago this very day.

From the magical year of 1974 that we brought you yesterday, we jump ahead 2 decades to the summer of 1994, when the band, unfortunately, was nearing its end. Garcia was in failing health, and often had difficulties staying focused when playing live. Yet, they could still make some nights magical. This soundboard recording from July 20, 1994, 21 years ago today, for example, finds the band playing Childhood’s End and Matilda, a song once recorded by Harry Belafonte, for the very first time.

• On January 19, The Grateful Dead are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Bruce Hornsby makes the induction speech, Jerry Garcia does not attend the ceremonies so the band brings a life size cardboard cutout of him! 
• Garcia’s health continues to fail, making playing live more and more difficult for him.
• Despite Garcia’s issues, the band grosses over $50 million in North America from touring in 1994, their largest revenue year.
• No live shows from 1994 have been officially released.

The Other Ones - 1998-07-19 - Englewood, CO (SBD)

As part of our Grateful Dead tribute this month, I thought we should bring you a show featuring the first reunion of the surviving members of the band after the death of Jerry Garcia. The 1998 Furthur Festival marked the debut of The Other Ones, which featured former GD members Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart and Bruce Hornsby, along with Mark Karan, Steve Kimock, John Molo and Dave Ellis. Bill Kreutzman would join the Other Ones in 2000. The band name of course was taken from the Dead tune That's It for the Other One, and was reference to the fact that the new band wasn’t quite the same as its predecessor. The Other Ones would eventually morph into The Dead, and later Furthur, but the name Grateful Dead stayed permanently retired out of respect for Garcia. This soundboard recording captures The Other Ones in Colorado on July 19, 1998, 17 years ago today.

From one mammoth year in Grateful Dead history yesterday to another one today. Deadheads have long debated whether 1977 or 1974 marked the best year in the band’s long storied history (with some voice voting for 1972 or 1973 or even 1969!). In any event, you can judge for yourself. With this soundboard recording from July 19, 1974, 41 years ago today. By the way, we’d have loved to bring you more from this historic year, but as you’ll see below, a host of summer 1974 shows have been officially released.

1974 in Grateful Dead History

• Phil stops singing due to vocal chord damage from singing above his natural range,. He wouldn't  resume singing until 1982.
• On March 23, the Dead debut the Wall of Sound, a concert sound system over 600 speakers that could unleash a total of 26,400 watts of audio power. Four tractor trailers and 21 crew members were required to haul and set up the 75-ton Wall.
• On June 27, The Grateful Dead release the studio album, From The Mars Hotel, which includes the classic tracks US Blues and Scarlet Begonia. 
• From October 16 to October 20, the Dead play their “farewell shows” at Winterland, Mickey Hart rejoins the band for the last of those 5 shows.. 
• The band takes a year and ½ hiatus from touring after those concerts, not returning the stage until 1976. 
• Live concerts from 1974 that have been officially released include: February 24, March 23, May 14, June 26, June 28, July 29, July 31, August 4, August 5, August 6, September 9, September 10, September 11 and the Winterland run from October 16, 17, 18, 19 & 20.

Grateful Dead - 1972-07-18 - Jersey City NJ (SBD)

When the Dead took the stage in Jersey City on July 18, 1972, 43 years ago today, it was just the 3rd show they played since returning from Europe in May. That tour of course is the stuff of legends, but none of it can be posted here or anywhere since every single Europe 72 show has been officially released. Of course, amidst that success, the band would suffer a loss, as Pigpen would leave the Dead due to his failing health at the end of the tour. So, enjoy his soundboard from the summer after Europe 72 as a memory of a year filled with triumph and tragedy for the band.

1972 in Grateful Dead History

• Donna Jean Godchaux joins the band on March 25, joining her husband Keith, who had come aboard in late 1971.
• The band tours Europe from April 7 to May 26, playing 22 shows.
• The band releases a triple live album in November, entitled Europe 72, providing highlights from their run across the pond. Over the years, the band releases some full shows from that tour, culminating in 2001 with the release of Europe '72: The Complete Recordings, a 73 CD set that documents every note played at all 22 shows! 
• On June 17, Pigpen leaves the band due to his failing health. He would pass away in early 1973, starting a horrific trend of tragic deaths for The Dead’s keyboard players. 
• On August 27, the band plays a benefit concert in Venetta, Oregon to raise money for the financially imperiled Springfield Creamery, which was operated by Ken Kesey’s brother, Chuck. If any show rivals Barton Hall in 1977 for the title Best Dead Show ever, this one is it! The audio and video of the concert, entitled Sunshine Daydream, were officially released in 2013, 
• In addition to the Europe 72 run and the August 27 Venetta performance, the following live concerts from 1972 have been officially released: March 26, March 28, July 21, September 17, September 21, September 27 and November 17.

As we noted in our CCR post back on July 4, John Fogerty joined the Dead on sate on at least 2 occasions. So, in honor of that, we decided we should bring you another from the former front man of Creedence.  This FM broadcast captures Fogerty taping an episode of the world Cafe on July 17, 1997, 18 years ago today. John Fogerty was promoting Blue Moon Swamp, his first studio recording in 11 years. The disc would climb to #37 on the Billboard charts and win a Grammy for best Rock Album.

Today and tomorrow we bring you 2 of the earliest Grateful Dead soundboards that are in circulation. This one is from their home base in San Francisco from July 16, 1966, 49 years ago today! The band had been playing using the Grateful Dead name for less than a year at this point, having dropped the moniker the Warlocks in late 1965. 1966 in Grateful Dead History

• During 1966, the newly named Grateful Dead play their first shows under that moniker at the following legendary San Francisco venues: The Matrix, The Avalon Ballroom, The Fillmore West, The Family Dog, and Winterland.
• On January 21, The Dead, along with The Airplane and Big Brother & The Holding Company, play the Trips Festival at Longshoreman’s Hall in San Francisco, one of the legendary Acidf tests hosted by Ken Kesey. 
• Robert Hunter begins writing lyrics for the Grateful Dead 
• The band takes up residence at 710 Asbury Street, in the Haight Asbury district in San Francisco, which will become a center for the flower power, counter culture movement that spawns the Summer of Love in 1967. 
• No complete live shows from 1966 have been officially released.
