Furthur 2012 - Back To Back - #1: Furthur, named after the psychedelic bus used by Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters in 1964, was the 3rd post Grateful Dead band, following the Other Ones and the Dead, to feature multiple members of that group In this case, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh teamed up to launch Furthur in 2009. The band toured from 2009 to 2014, with a host of supporting players and numerous guest sitting in along the way. This soundboard recording captures the band in Chicago on July 17, 2012, 14 years ago today. Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd part of this Back to Back to Back set. 

Historical notes - The Grateful Dead, of course, served as the house band in 1967 for Ken Kesey's Acid Tests, which were chronicled in Tom Wolfe's book, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. The bus, Furthur was driven by Neal Cassady, the inspiration for the character Dean Moriarty in Jack Kerouac's On the Road, who is referenced in the Grateful Dead tune The Other One in the line "Captain Neal at the wheel of the bus to Never Never Land".

Bruce Hornsby is one of those rare artists I've seen as a lead in performer, a solo headliner, and as part of a group. In May 1987, I saw him lead in for the Grateful Dead at Leguna Seca, the only Dead show I attended on the West Coast. Then between 1993 and 2018, my wife and I saw Bruce as the headliner on 6 different occasions, some shows solo, some with the Range, and some with the Nosiemakers. Then after 5 years without seeing Mr. Hornsby, we went to 2 of his shows earlier this year, a solo performance in March and a concert with the Noisemakes just 4 days ago! That makes Hornsby just 1 of 8 artists - the others are the Grateful Dead, Paul McCartney, The Band, Los Lobos, Robert Cray, Joe Jackson and Bruce Springsteen - that I have seen 2 or more times in the same year. On top of that, we saw him 9 times as a member of the Grateful Dead in 1990 and 1991 combined! By the way, if you like keeping track of those kind of statistics releated to the comcerts you have attended, my book has a chapter filled with them that I'm sure you'' enjoy.

I saw Blondie in concert once,  on July 8, 1979 as part of a double bill with Rockpile at Belmont Race Track.  The contrast between the punk rockers and the Belmont betting clientele, many of who looked like Oscar Madison from the Odd Couple,  is a sight I'll never forget.  The show was also part of a run of 4 concerts in 3 weeks, as the night before I saw Stephen Stills at The Garden State Arts Center, and then the next 2 Saturdays I would see Jorma on July 14 and the Allman Brothers on July 21.

In 1985, the first Rock In Rio festival took place from Janaury 11 to 20, 1985, with Queen, George Benson, Rod Stewart, AC/DC, and Yes each headlining for two nights. Since then, not only have 8 more incrnations of the fevent been held in Rio, but the festival has also expanded to locations such as Lisbon, Madrid and even Las Vegas! Bruce Springsteen headlined the final night of the 5th edition of the Lisbon version of the festival, on June 3, 2012, 13 years ago today. The last 19 tracks were broadcast on FM radio, while the first 5 are provided via a very good audience recording. Springsteen was on tour in support of his 17th studio album, entitled Wrecking Ball, which would eventually climb to #1 on the Billboard charts. The tour would encompass 133 shows, take Bruce and the E-street Band to 4 continents, and gross over $340 million. The tour was also the first without Clarence Clemons, who had passed away in 2011. Jake Clemons, Clarence's nephew, took over for his uncle on saxophone.

2010s - #6: Since end of the Grateful Dead with the passing of Jerry Garcia in 1995, Bob Weir has continued to spend a huge portion of his life on the road.  From shows with Ratdog with s long time bass player Rob Wasserman, to post Dead spin offs such as The Other Ones, The Dead, Furthur and Dead & Company, to unique pairings with the National and the Wolf Bros, Weir may be playing live now more than ever before in his long storied career. In 2012, he did a solo acoustic tour, which he desribed to Rolling Stone magazine as "a lot of fun for me, because I get to be alone with the song. And I get to hear every little nuance; if my instrument does something that I wasn’t expecting, I get to chase that. Chase that down a little bit. It’s simple enough so that I can hear everything that I’m singing and playing, and I’m hearing stuff that I wouldn’t, in an ensemble, be able to hear. Since 1998, Warren Haynes has presented his annual Christmas Jam in his hometown of Asheville, NC.  The concert that has provided an opportunity for the performing artists, audience and the local community to give back during the holiday season. The first show was dubbed, "The Christmas Jam: Musician's X-Mas Reunion" and was held at 45 Cherry, a local club in Asheville, on December 22, 1988. This event has continued to grow every year and is now dubbed "Warren Haynes Presents: The Christmas Jam". The show, which has featured some of rocks biggest names such as The Tedeschi Trucks Band, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Steve Miller, Peter Frampton, and the Allman Brothers, just to name a few, sells out in a matter of hours every year and it is currently held at the U.S. Cellular Center. The 2012 edition featured, in addition to Warren, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, The Avett Brothers, The String Cheese Incident, and Sheryl Crow.  This excellent audience recording captures Sheryl's set on December 15, 2012, a dozen years ago today.  By the way, 2 highlights from Shery'ls performance - covers of Blind Faith's Can't Find My Way Home and Chuck Berry's Run Run Rudolph.

I saw Crosby Stills & Nash for the first time in 1978, when the band was riding high after the release of the CSN album a year earlier. That disc climbed all the way to #2 on the Billboard charts, while the single, Just A Song Before I Go, reached the #7 spot. Since that first show, I've seen them 5 other times - in 1985, 1986, 1987, 1990 and 1992 - not to mention a CSNY show in 2000, plus solo concerts by Stills in 1979 and Crosby in 2015.

This soundboard recording captures the trio on their 2012 summer tour, at the NYCB Theatre in Westbury on June 20, 2012, 11 years.  While some places list this as June 21 (the band played the venue on both the 20th and 21st), the fact that Nash ast one point tells folks"to come back tmorrow" leads me to beleive its from the first of the 2 nights.

2010's - #2: When not playing with the Grateful Dead (or its decendents such as The Other Ones, The Dead Further or Dead & Company) Bob Weir has embarked on a variety of solo ventures, In addition to playing with Kingfish, as discussed in yesterday's post, Weir has fronted the Bob Weir Band, Bobby & The Midnites, Ratdog and the Campfire band.  He has also played solo acoustic shows, such as the one captured in this soundboard recording from September 8, 2012, a decade ago today, in Woodstock. Always inteetsing at any of the post Garcia era shows to hear Weir take the lead on songs such as Ripple or Going Down The Road, which had always featured Jerry on vocals.

Steve Miller - 2012-08-10 - Vienna VA (ALD)

Steve Miller was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1943. His parents were friends with guitar legend Les Paul, who encouraged young Steve’s interest in music. Miller later spent time in Dallas, Chicago and New York, honing his guitar skills. By 1966, however, he had found his way to San Francisco, and became part of the twin music and cultural revolutions that emerged from the City By The Bay. Miller originally played the blues, but by 1973, his music began to change, taking on more of what would soon be called an AOR sound. His tune the Joker went to #1 on the Billboard charts, and Miller set out to replicate that success with his next album. When Fly Like An Eagle was released in 1976, the album would be certified quadruple platinum, and climb to #3 on the Billboard charts. The title track would go to #2 on the Billboard singles chart, Take The Money and run would reach #11, and Rock’n Me would go all the way to the top spot. Miller continued to release successful albums and singles during the rest of the decade and into the early 1980s, but after the release of album Abracadabra in 1982 which went to #3 on the Billboard chars he never again had a major hit record. He continued to tour relentlessly, however, and draws crowds to this day This ALD recording captures Miller about 3 decades after his last hit album, and a decade ago today, in Vienna VA on August 10, 2012.

Bruce Springsteen - 2012-07-07 - Roskilde, Denamrk (IEM)

I've attended 9 Springsteen concerts, in 4 different decades (70s, 80s, 90s, & 2000's) with 2 different backing bands (the E-Streeters and those other guys he played with in the 1990s, whoever they were!). On top of that, I've seen Bruce twice in the same 3 times - 1978, 1992 and 2003!  The other 3 shows I attended were in 1984, 1984, and 1988. If that's not enough, I saw Bruce in a 5th decade, the 2010s, when he, along with Miami Steve, were special guests of Paul McCartney on September 15, 2017 at Madison Square Garden. They played I Saw her Standing There, and when the crowd wouldn't stop screaming when it was over, Macca did the only thing he could do - count them down into a 2nd rendition of the same song. Yep back to back versions of I Saw her Standing There featuring Sir Paul, Bruce and Miami Steve. By the way, my book, Ten Rules of The Road I Learned At My First Concert feature countless stories like that one!  UPDATE - make it a 6th decade, as just a few weeks ago, on June 16, 2022, when I saw Sir Paul McCartney for the 9th time, at MetLife Stadium, he brought Bruce our once again as a special guest. Bruce played Glory Days, with Macca on backing viocals, then the 2 of them dueted on the Beatles' tune, I Wanna Be Your Man  Bruce also came back during the closing Abbey Road medley to add some guitar work! Guess that story will have to go in the next edition of my book!

Another legend, another 1967 album debut. Jimmy Cliff released his first album entitled, Hard Road To Travel in 1967. While the disc received strong critical reviews, it did not sell well and failed to chart. Cliff would eventally take the world by storm in 1972, with the release of the album The Harder They Come, which played a significant role in increasing the popularity of reggae music in the United States and Europe. This FM broadccast captures Cliff 45 years after the Summer Of Love, and a decade ago today, in Denver on June 19, 2012.

While critical attention in 1967 was focused on the psychedelic sounds of albums such as Sgt Pepper's Loney Hearts Club Band and Surrealistic Pillow, the singles chart was still filled with breezy pop tunes and one hit wonders. Songs such as Windy by The Association, Incense and Peppermints by the Strawberry Alarm Clock, to Sir With Love by Lulu and Ode to Billy Joe all went to #1 on the Billboard charts in 1967. While he didn't reach the top spot on the charts, country legend has 2 hit singles in 1967, putiing him on the map as an artist. In April 1967, he released Gentle On My Mind, which rose to #62 on the Billboard charts. Then in Octobe, he released By The Time I Get To Phoenix, which climbed to #26 on the charts, and #2 on the Country Musioc rankings. Campbell would win 4 Grammy Awards thanks to the 2 tunes - Best Male Country Vocal performance and Best Country & Westerm Recording for Gentle on My Mind, and Best Vocal Performance male and Best Comtemporary Vocal Performance for By The Time I Get To Phoenix. This FM broadcast captures Cambell 45 years after his huge breakthrough, on what would be his final tour due to the debilitating effects of Alzheimers, on June 1, 2012, a decade ago today.  The set list includes the tune that started it all in 1967, Gentle On My Mind.
