2010 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 2010-03-15 - New York, NY (TV SBD)

The 2010 Rock & Roll Hall Of  Fame ceremony featured a list of inductees who truly stretched the boundaries of rock, ranging from Abba to Genesis to The Hollies to the Stooges to Jimmy Cliff.  Genesis didn't perform and Peter Gabriel was a no-show, but Phish, who inducted them, played a set of their tunes. Graham Nash earned his second entry into the Hall as a member of The Hollies, his first having come with CSN. That made CSNY the first band to have all 4 of its members inducted twice (The Beatles would be the second when Ringo was inducted in 2015), though ironically the band is not in the hall! You see, CSN was inducted as a band and Neil Young was honored for his solo career.  Then Neil and Stephen Stills earned their 2nd entries as members of Buffalo Spriingfield while Crosby gained his second as a member of The Byrds.  Jimmy Cliff, who was moved to tears by his induction, performed a stunning set of his biggest hits, You Can Get It If You Really Want, Many Rivers To Cross and The Harder They Come, but unfortunately, it is no where to be found on the web.  If anyone has it, please share!

1960s- #1: From 1964 to 1966, the Animals scored 6 top 20 singles on the US Billboard charts - House of The Rising Sun (#1), I’m Crying (#19), Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood (#15), We Gotta Get Out Of This Place (#13), Don't Bring Me Down (#12), See See Rider (#10) (Note - It’s My Life, another classic, reached #23 on the Billboard charts), In 1967, rebilled as Eric Burdon and The Animals, they would score 3 more top 20 tunes - When I Was Young (#15) , Monterey (also #15) and San Franciscan Nights (#9). They’d crack the top 20 one last time in 1968 with Sky Pilot at #14. Less than a year later, The Animals disbanded and Burdon had joined War. This BBC FM Broadcast captures The Animals in the middle of that run of hits, in London, on February 2, 1965, 58 years ago today.

It was the first major rock festival that attracted national attention (the Magic Mountain festival took place a week earlier to far less fanfare - go here for more on that), hosting over 200,000 people over 3 days, with 90,000 fans in attendance at its peak on Sunday night. It was the place where Jimi Hendrix and The Who made their U.S. debuts. It marked the first major public appearances by Janis Joplin and Otis Redding. It embodied the counter culture spirit of San Francisco, with almost all the acts performing for free. It was the first multi-racial and multi-genre musical event. And it will ever be synonymous with the Summer of Love. It was officially, The Monterey International Pop Music Festival, better know simply as Monterey Pop. As part of this month's tribute to 1967, we're going to help you re-live that event over the next 3 days, capturing each of the festival's unique sessions. All of these are soundboard recordings! We start with this post of the Friday Evening session, featuring Simon & Garfunkel and The Animals, from June 16, 1967, 55 years ago today. 

A couple of quick notes: This is an expnaded version of the show, with more songs thna the one I posted for the 50th anniversary. It also includes a bonus disc of interviews and commercials. The tracks are number from 1 to 151 across the 12 CDs that make up this set, so today wil end at track #21 and tomorrow will pick up at track #22, whie post #2 will end at track #65 with the next day picking up at track #86.  Enjoy the tunz.

The Animals polayed Monterey Pop on the opening night, Friday June 16, a set you'll getto hear later this month.  Thw expereince was so memorable that the band composed the tune Monterey, which was rleased on December 30, 1957.  The song recounts the band's experience at the festival, and name checks many of the other artitss who performed, including The Byrds, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, and Jimi Hendrix. The tune would become one of the band's biggest hits, climbing to #15 on the Billboard charts.  This soundboard recording captures The Animals just 5 days before their performance at Mopnterey Pop, in Italy on June 11, 1967, 55 years ago today.

NME Poll Winners Concert - 1965-04-11 - London, UK (SBD)

The 1960s - #3: The New Musical Express was the British equivalent of Billboard magazine, posting weekly charts of the best selling singles and albums in the UK. The magazine also hosted an annual concert in which bands voted the best the magazine’s readers would perform and accept their awards. Last April, we posted the 1964 New Musical Express (NME) Poll Winners Concert, which featured performances by both the Rolling Stones and The Beatles. Today, we post the 1965 version of that show, from April 11 of that year, a half century ago today. The Beatles again headline the show, which also features The Rolling Stones, The Moody Blues, Herman’s Hermits, Donovan, Them, The Animals, The Kinks and Dusty Springfield. As someone who shared this recording quipped: “This one-day rock festival is a snapshot of rock the moment before it became rebellious. Bob Dylan hadn’t given The Beatles their first joint yet, The Stones were mop tops and The Who weren’t yet at My Generation.” If this was the swan song of 3 minute pop music, making way for more complex rock music, then what a way to go!

1983 - The on again, off again relationship between Eric Burdon and The Animals was back on in 1983, when the band reunited for an album and a tour. The album Ark, was released in August 1983, and was accompanied by a world tour. Two thirds of the set list was composed of songs from Ark, with the remaining third being tunes from their catalog of 1960s hits. This soundboard recording captures the Animals on November 29, 1983, 3 decades ago today, in Michigan.
