Grateful Dead Psychedelic 1969 Daily Double - #1: As the decade of the 1960s came to an end, the Grateful Dead were beginning to take the improvisational style to new heights. Their concerts at The Fillmore West in late February/early March that year, from which the album Live Dead was culled (and more recently a 9 disc box set of the entire run) found the band exploring the depths of space on tunes such as Dark Star, St. Stephen and The Other One.. At the same time, with Pigpen at the helm on vocals, they could produce powerful down and dirty blues numbers such as Alligator or Turn On Your Lovelight. When the Live Dead disc was released in late 1969, it marked the first time the band had released a live performance on disc. At the time, Robert Christgau wrote that side two of the album "contains the finest rock improvisation ever recorded." This soundboard recording captures the band during that historic year, on May 30, 1969, 49 years ago today, in Portland. Download this one, the come back tomorrow for parts 2 of this Dail Double..

June's Theme At So Many Roads

For June, our theme will be The 1980s.  Every show we post will have taken place during the decade which saw:
  • Several of the classic bands from the 1960s and 1970s disband or take significant time off, some permanently, such as Led Zeppelin due to the death of John Bonham, and others temporarily, such as The Who, Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones.
  • The rise of new wave and punk acts to positions of prominence, though some like The Clash, would burn out, others such as Elvis Costello would radically change their sound, and still others, such as U2, would find themselves on top of the rock world.
  • Rock again would become associated with social causes, as evidenced by Live Aid, Farm Aid, The Amnesty Concerts, and The Bridge School Benefits.
  • The rise of MTV, a medium which originally served as a vehicle for new acts, but which by decade's end would help artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, Eric Clapton, Fleetwood Mac and even the Grateful Dead find a vast nationwide audience.
Enjoy the tunz!

His other 3 performances in 2017 were at the Royal Albert Hall in London Mo May 22, 24 and 25. Those 3 shows brought his total number of performances at that legendary venue to 208, having first appeared at the RAH in December 1964 with the Yardbirds! Clapton also played the venue with Cream and Delaney & Bonnie and Friends, and while Blind Faith never played the RAH, EC and Steve Winwood did in 2011.  For more of Calpton's history at the RAH, go here.  This ALD matrix recordig captures night on at the RAH on May 22, 2017, just a year ago today. Grateful Dead Spring 1973 - Daily Double - #1: In the Spring of 1973, the Grateful Dead found themselves rebounding from personnel losses. Drummer Mickey Hart had left the band in late 1971, and would not return until 1974. In early 1973, original keyboardist Ron "Pigpen" Mckernan passed away at age 27, the first of the band's keyboard players to die tragically. The Dead's sound began a new evolution, with Bill Kreuztman handling the drums solo, while Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux added new musical elements to the mix. Keith's piano playing was more jazzy compared to Pigpen's bluesy sound, while Donna Jean helped fill out the band's harmonies. New tunes such as Jimmy Row, Let It Grow, Eyes Of The World, Loose Lucy and Wave That Flag (an early version of U.S. Blues) entered the band's repertoire. By year end, the band would even launch their own record label! This soundboard recording captures The Dead testing their new musical boundaries on May 20, 1973, 45 years ago today in Santa Barbara. Download this one, then come back on May 26 for part 2 of this daily double.

Paul McCartney Driving The USA Trifecta - #1: When Paul McCartney launched his Driving The USA tour in April 2002, in support of his latest album, Driving Rain, it marked his first set of concerts in the states since 1993. They were also his first concerts in the wake of the death of his wife Linda, his former band mate George Harrison, and the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Perhaps not even Sir Paul realized how successful these shows would be as he only planned 24 shows. Reception was so good that he wound up scheduling a 2nd leg of shows for the fall,, aptly entitled the Back in The US tour, which later spawned a live album of the same name. Eventually he took the tour to Mexico, Japan and Europe. This SBD (or HQ audience recording) captures McCartney near the end of the Driving The USA run, on May 13, 2002, 16 years ago today, in Atlanta. Download this one, then come back on May 15 and May18 for the rest of this trifecta.

Waren Zevon 1978 Daily Double - #1: Born in Chicago in 1947, Warren Zevon moved to Los Angeles when he was still a teenager. When he quit high school, he moved to New York, and later to Spain, to pursue a musical career, but by 1975, was back in LA. He roomed there with then unknowns Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. He also collaborated with Jackson Browne, who helped produce Zevon’s 1976 self titled album. Zevon also wrote songs for Linda Ronstadt, including Hasten Down the Wind, Carmelita, Poor Poor Pitiful Me, and Mohammed's Radio. In 1978, Zevon released Excitable Boy, an album produced by Jackson Browne and guitarist Waddy Wachtel. The disc met with both critical and commercial success. Rolling Stone called the album one of the most significant releases of the 1970s. The disc went to #8 on the Billboard charts, and spawned the classic single Werewolves of London, which reached #21 on the charts. This FM broadcast captures Zevon’s in Chicago on May 13, 1978, 4 decades ago this very day. Download this one, then come back on May 28 for part 2 of this this daily double.

Bruce Hornsby 1996 Daily Double - #1: For Bruce Hornsby, the year 1996 marked the 10th anniversary of the release of his Grammy Award winning debut album, The Way It Is. Rather than look backward, however, Hornsby continued to find ways to push his musical style forward. The cover of his recently released album, Hot House, featured an imagined jam session between bluegrass legend Bill Monroe and jazz legend Charlie Parker, two genres of music that Hornsby incorporated into the songs on that disc. The album also featured guest appearances by such diverse artists as Bela Fleck, Pat Metheney and the late Jerry Garcia. During this period, Hornsby's concerts took on a more improvisational tone, as he often took requests from the audience, rather than work from a set list. He would challenge himself to find ways to seamlessly string together diverse requests, turning the album versions of songs into more complex arrangements. As he says on his website, "I think of my songs as living beings that evolve and change and grow through the years." In his continuing quest to grow and evolve his music, Hornsby also participated in the Further Festival in the summer of  1996, one of the many Grateful Dead family endeavors launched in the wake of the death of Jerry Garcia. His band played along with Bob Weir & Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Mystery Box, Hot Tuna, Los Lobos and others. Given all that, we figured it would be great to bring you  a host of shows from Hornsby's 1996 spring tour so you could see for yourself the evolution of his musical style. We;ll start with this soundboard recording from May 10, 1996,  22 years ago this very day, from Atlanta, Download this one, then come back on May 17 for part 2 of this Daily Double!.
