For those of you who are old like me, you'll remember when Labor Day weekend meant the Jerry Lewis telethon to raise money to find a cure for Muscular Dystrophy. The telethon would start Sunday night and run through Labor Day, with Lewis and countless guest stars appealing to viwers at home to call and donate. Sammy Davis Jr made numerous appearance on the telethon throughout the 1980s to help his old friend Jerry's cause.  This TV soundboard recording captures him at the 1988 telethon, in Las Vegas on September 5, 1988, 38 years ago today.

When they released of their self titled debut album in July 1983, and served as the lead in for U2 that same summer, The Alarm were quickly heralded as perhaps the next "big thing". The similarities in their style to that io U2 brought on the inevitable comparisons, which may have been simply unfair to a band just starting out. In any event, The Alarm never quite reached the heights U2 did, but they most certainly produced some fine tunes, including The Stand, 68 Guns and Rain In The Summertime (my favorite), just to name a few. This FM broadcast captures The Alarm on tour 5 years after their debut, in Toronto, on May 11, 1988, 38 years ago today.

Roger McGuinn - 1988-04-27 - Roanoke, VA (SBD)

Roger McGuinn entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1991 as a member of The Byrds.  At the induction ceremony at the Waldorf Astoria, the 5 original membrs of The Byrds - McGuinn, Gene Clark, David Crosby, Michael Clarke and Chris Hillman – put aside years of personal and financial disputes to reunite and perform. Sadly, it would be the last time the 5 original line up ever played together as both Michael Clarke and Gene Clark would pass away within the next 2 years. Of course, while those induction ceremonies closed some wounds, it opened others, as long time Byrds members such as Clarence White, Gene Parsons and Skip Battin, just to name 3, were completely ignored by the Rock Hall of Fame.

Dave Mason entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 as a member of Traffic.  The 2004 class also included George Harrison, Bob Seger, Prince, ZZ Top, and Jackson Browne. Traffic played Dear Mr. Fantasy at the ceremony, while Mason and Steve Winwood also joined in during the all star jam on Feelin' Alright.

This FM broadcast captures Mason out solo at the Chesnut Cabaret in Philadelphia on April 6, 1988, 38 years ago today. Both songs played at the 2004 induction ceremeony were also in this set list - a little bit of foreshadowing!

1980s- #2: In 1988, the legendary Rat Pack - Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr - announced a reunion tour, entitled Together Again. They scheduled 29 concerts, opening on March 13 in Oakland and closing on April 9 in New York City, the last night of 4 in the Big Apple. Unfortunately, after just 6 shows, Dean Martin dropped out of the tour, citing health issues. Dean was clearly in no shape to perform as during his time on the tour he constantly forgot lyrics and slurred his words, Frank and Sammy, in the grand tradition that "the show must go on", continued the tour as a duo. Later, Liza Minnelli joined Frank and Sammy as part of the tour.  This TV soundboard recording captures Sammy's set on opening night in Oakland, on March 13, 1988, 38 years ago today.

1980s - #6:  In August 1987, Warren Zevon released the album, Sentimental Hygiene, his the sixth studio album. but his first in over five years. The disc featured a host of notable guest stars. The track Even A Dog Can Shake Hands was composed by Peter Buck, Bill Berry and Mike Mills of R.E.M., who also recorded an album with Zevon under the name Hindu Love Gods. Michael Stipe, also of R.E.M., appeared on the album, providing vocals and harmony on the song Bad Karma. In addition, the album featured Bob Dylan playing harmonica on The Factory. This soundboard recording captures Zevon on tour in support of the album, in Portland on November 30, 1988, 37 years ago today.

GD 1988 - Back To Back - #1: Certain years in Grateful Dead history have moments that immediately come to mind. For example, in 1987, Jerry Garcia made his trumphant return from a diabetic coma, the band released In The Dark, the Touch of Grey video took over MTv, the Dead toured with Dylan, and the band played a show for the ages at Madison Square Garden on 9/18/87. In 1989, moments like the Formerly The Warlock shows in Hampton, the entire summer run, and The Nightfall of Diamonds concert on 10/16/1989 all spring to mind, not to mention Garcia's fall solo tour featuring Clarence Clemons. And then there's 1988. That year seems to get lost between the other 2 that sandwiched it. I saw the band 8 times that year, all at MSG. None of those concerts would rank in the top 10 I ever saw, but none were anywhere near the bottom of my list. Each and every one was a solid, well played show, building on the emotional moments from 1987, and setting the stage for the mammoth 1989 to 1991 run. It's a sadly underappreciated year that doesn't get enough attention. So, to make up for that, we'll bring you a Back To Back set from that year.  Today we have a soundboard recording from Moutain View from October 1, 1988, 37 years ago today.  Download this one, then stop back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this entry.

The 2nd Fife Aid festival (the first was held in 1985 in the wake of Live Aid) to raise money for environmentally sustainable projects in Africa was held on July 23 and 24, 1988 in St Andrews, Scotland. The festival was plagued, however, by poor organization; bad weather; the loss of several key acts such as David Bowie, which in turn resulted in Ted Turner deciding not to televise the event; and the refusal of its headline act, Van Morrison, to allow his name to be used in any of the advertising for the festival. In addition, the ever moody Van the Man only agreed to do the gig on the understanding that he would be backed by a band of local musicians. That way, he would not have to fly his normal band in from London. Van rehearsed with the Scottish group on Saturday, then closed the Fife Aid festival on Sunday at 9 pm. This soundboard recording captures his entire set that July 24, 1988, 38 years ago today, though the sound is a bit muddy, probably due to the high winds that accompanied the rain. In any event, I’ve posted it for 2 reasons - first, it fits our Festival theme for this month and second, it also includes a rare live performance of Someone Like You, which just happens to be my wedding song. This post is dedicated to my bride - it’s been 33 years since we’ve been married, 35 since we met, the best years of my life.

Freedomfest - 1988-06-11 - London, UK (FM)

The 1980s saw a resurgence of benefit concerts/festivals where rock artists used the power of their music and popularity to spur social & political change. While Live Aid may be the best known of those efforts, it was far from the only one. On June 11, 1988, 37 years ago today as captured in this FM broadcast, Wembly Stadium hosted Freedomfest, officially know as the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute, a concert celebrating the life and sacrifices of the anti-apartheid revolutionary and freedom fighter. The show was also designed to help pressure the Apartheid government of South Africa to release him from jail. The concert featured dozens of musical acts and entertainers, including Eric Clapton, Dire Straits, Stevie Wonder, Sting, Tracy Chapman, Joe Cocker, Jackson Brown, and Steve Van Zandt (who appropriately played the song, Sun City, protesting Apartheid), just to name some. The show was broadcast live to 67 countries and an audience of over 600 million people. The political pressure Freedomfest place on South Africa had the intended results - 20 months after the show, Mandella was released from prison, having spent 27 years in jail. By 1994, apartheid ceased in South Africa, and Mandella was elected President of the country, a nation which would become a multicultural democracy under his leadership.

Fleetwood Mac - 1988-06-05 - Rock Am Ring, Nürburg, Germany (FM) 

The first Rock am Ring (German for "Rock at the Ring") festival took place in 1985 at the Nürburgring race track. Then in 1993, it was joined by its sister festival, Rock im Park ("Rock in the Park"), originally held in Vienna, but which now has a permanent home at the Zeppelinfeld in Nuremberg. On June 5, 1988, 37 years ago today, Fleetwood Mac headlined the Rock am Ring festival, as captured in this FM broadcast recording. Earlier that year, the band lineup which had produced the mega hit Rumours in 1977, as well as the band’s self-titled album in 1975, Tusk in 1979 and Mirage in 1982, released the disc Tango In The Night. The album sold over 3 million copies in the US and cracked the Billboard Top 10. Yet, soon after the album hit record stores, Lindsey Buckingham left the group, not to return for almost a decade. Fleetwood Mac decided to go on tour in support of Tango even without Buckingham, recruiting: Rick Vito and Billy Burnette to fill out their line up for their live shows.

Pink Floyd 1988 - Back To Back - #1: Pink Floyd's 1987 album, A Momentary Lapse of reason, was the band's first without long time member Roger Waters. The recording of the album was marked by ongoing legal battles between David Glimour and Waters over the rights to the name "Pink Floyd". In the end, Gilmour won the legal war and the right to use the name "Pink Floyd" in perpetuity. None of the legal issues, nor the absence of Waters, seemed to matter to the band's fans. The album went to #3 in both the US and UK. Pink Floyd launched a North American in 1987, even before the album was complete and shows sold out instantly. The tour quickly went worldwide and wouldn't end until after 200 performances for an audience of 4.25 million fans. In August 1987, Warren Zevon released the album, Sentimental Hygiene, his the sixth studio album. but his first in over five years. The disc featured a host of notable guest stars. The track Even A Dog Can Shake Hands was composed by Peter Buck, Bill Berry and Mike Mills of R.E.M., who also recorded an album with Zevon under the name Hindu Love Gods. Michael Stipe, also of R.E.M., appeared on the album, providing vocals and harmony on the song Bad Karma. In addition, the album featured Bob Dylan playing harmonica on The Factory. This excellent audience recoring captures Zevon in Frankfurt, on tour im support of the album, on February 8, 1988, 37 years ago today.

The Alarm - 1988-02-06 - Glasgow, UK (FM)

When they released of their self titled debut album in July 1983, and served as the lead in for U2 that same summer, The Alarm were quickly heralded as perhaps the next "big thing". The similarities in their style to that io U2 brought on the inevitable comparisons, which may have been simply unfair to a band just starting out. In any event, The Alarm never quite reached the heights U2 did, but they most certainly produced some fine tunes, including The Stand, 68 Guns and Rain In The Summertime (my favorite), just to name a few. This FM broadcast captures The Alarm on tour 5 years after their debut, on February 6, 1988, 37 years ago today.

In November 1963, Phil Spector released the album,  A Christmas Gift For You from Phil Spector, featuring Christmas tunes sung by The Ronnettes, Darlene Love, and The Crystals. o The disc went to #10 on the Billboard charts and was ranked #142 on Rolling Stone magazine's 2003 and 2012 lists of the 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time. In 2019, Rolling Stone ranked it as the greatest Christmas album of all time. Decades later, Ronnie Spector and Darlene Love continued their connection to that album, playing Christmas shows at clubs like the Bottom Line in New York. This excellent audience reocrding captures their 1988 show on December 22, 1988, 3 dozen years ago today. By the way, Sonny Bono plays the role of Phil Spector at this show, furthering the link to the legendary album from 1963!

1988: In November 1987, Stevie Wonder released his 21st studio album, entitled Characters.  Reception  to the album was mixed. On the one hand, critics didn't love it, and the album became his first since 1972's Music On My Mind not to reach the top 10 on the Billboard album charts, peaking at #17.  On the other hand, it debuted at #1 on the Top R&B Albums chart, staying there for for seven weeks, and spawned six singles including three that hit the Billboard Hot 100 - Get It, a duet with Michale Jackson at #80,Skeletons at #19 and the ballad You Will Know at #77.  Wonder also received 3 Grammy nominations for the album, through he did not win any.  This soundbaord recording captures him on tour in support of the album about a year after its release, in Atlanta on November 28, 1988, 3 dozen years ago today.

1980s - #1: In August 1988, John Hiatt released the album Slow Turning, his follow up to his 1987 breakout album, Bring The Family. Hiatt is backed on the album by the Goners: Sonny Landreth on guitar, Dave Ranson on bass and Kenneth Blevins on drums. The album contains some of Hiatt’s best know tunes, including Drive South, Tennessee Plates, Feels Like Rain and the title track. The single Slow Turning received significant airplay and has several notable lines. The chorus of “not fade way’ echoes the Buddy Holly song of the same name, while the line “never did get what I wanted but now I get what I need” is reminiscent of a line from the Stone’s You Can’t Always get What You Want. Speaking of the Stones, Slow Turning also features the lyric “I'm yelling at the kids in the back, 'cause they're banging like Charlie Watts”. I’ve said it in other posts but it’s worth repeating here – John Hiatt is a vastly under rated singer/songwriter. This FM broadcast captures Hiatt in Boston on October 10, 1988, 3 dozen years ago today, on tour in support of Slow Turning.  NOTE - while the source says FM, its a bit muted so its possible it could be an audience recording.

Bob Dylan - 1988-09-10 - Stanhope, NJ (SBD)

In May 1988, Bob Dylan released Down In The Groove, his 25th studio album. While the disc did not receive good reviews, nor sell particularly well, Dylan launched a summer tour in support of the album. The 1988 tour marked a dramtic shift for Dylan in his live performances. Where in prior years, Dylan’s live shows often featured collaborations with high-profile artists such as Mick Taylor, the Grateful Dead, and Tom Petty, the 1988 run centered around a small, 'garage rock'-type combo, consisting of guitarist G.E. Smith, bassist Kenny Aaronson, and drummer Christopher Parker. Influenced by his time with the Grateful Dead, Dylan’s set list became more adventurous, with song selection varying from show to show. He also began to incorporate more traditional cover songs into the set lists. For Dylan, the 1988 concerts would be the start of what is now known as the Never Ending Tour, which is now over 3 and a half decades and over 3000 shows strong. This soundboard recording captures Dylan during that historic 1988 tour, in Stanhope on September 10, 1988, 3 dozen years ago today.
