Simon & Garfunkel entered the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1990, the first induction of two for Simon and Garfunkel's only one.  James Tyalor handled the induction speech for the duo.  Musch to the delight ad surprise of those at the ceremony, the 2 took the stage together for 2 songs.

Speaking of surprise reunions, that's exactly what happened on SNL on October 18, 1975, 51 years ago today.  After Simon played several solo tunes, Garfunkle joined him for three songs, as captured in this TV soundboard recording.  On just the 2nd episode of the show, the stage was set that SNL would be the place where not only comedy magic transpired, but also unforgettable musical moments would occur.

Bruce Springsteen was inducted into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 1999, aong with Billy Joel, Dusty Springfield, and Sir Paul McCartney, just to name a few others. At the time the Hall did his long time back up group, the legendary E Street Band, a disservice by not including them. Springsteen made up for it by inviting the entire band to attend the ceremony, and then bringing them on stage. As he and the band had not played together since 1989, it was a historic moment that became much more. Soon after, a reunion tour was announced. To paraphrase the Blues Brother’s movie “they’re putting the band back together”. By the way, the injustice of omitting the E-Streeters from the hall was corrected in 2014.

This soundboard recording goes back to the year that made it clear that Bruce would one day be elected to the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. In 1975, Springsteen wound up on the covers of both Time and Newsweek on October 27 of that year, Two of his most famous series of gigs in 1975 were the August run at the Bottom Line in New York and his stand at the Roxy in Los Angeles in late October. This soundboard recording captures Bruce in between those 2 runs, in Detriot on Octoiber 4, 1975, 51 years ago today.

King, and Bo Didley all  took their rightful place in the hall.  That was the largest class in the institution's history and also included that Aretha Franklin,  Big Joe Turner, Bill Haley, Carl Perkins, Clyde McPhatter, Eddie Cochran, Jackie Wilson, The Coasters, Marvin Gaye, Ricky Nelson, Roy Orbison and Smokey Robinson. Paul Butterfield handled the induction speech for Muddy.

Peter Frampton was finally inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 2024, 4 dozen years after the album that made him a star. It was also the disc came to define rock and roll in the mid 1970's. FM rock stations began to play more album oriented rock (AOR), as Frampton's album and other similar work came to be called. Other bands attempted to copy Frampton Comes Alive, but unfortunately the results were usually excessive, over produced, and downright boring. Other rebelled against the AOR sound and movements such as disco, punk and new wave emerged. All that, from 1 album. If you want to read more about the impact of Frampton Comes Alive and the dramatic changes in music in 1976, pick up the book, I Hate New Music, by Dave Thompson.

In any event, this FM broadcast captures Frampton on the cusp of the sucess spawned by his legendary album, playing 4 tracks at the BBC studios in London on April 1, 1975, 51 years ago today.

Elvis Presley was part of the inaugural class inducted Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1986 - what else would you expect for a man nicknamed "The King".  Also inducted that year were  Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Fat Domino, The Everly Brothers, James Brown, Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis - every one a no brainer. The only sad part was so many of them were no longer with us to celebrate their achievement.

This soundboard recording captures Elvis during one of his semi-annual Las Vegas residencies, diring the dinner show at the Las vegas Hilton on April 1, 1975, 51 years ago today.  Just over 2 years after this performance, we would lose Elvis to years of drug and alcohol abuse - he was just 42 years old.

1970s - #4: When Paul McCartney founded Wings in late 1971, then took the band on a 1972 tour of English Universities, traveling by bus and showing up unannounced and asking to play, many though the ex-Beatle had lost his mind. Sir Paul, however, knew just what he was doing. Between 1973 and 1975, McCartney and Wings would score 3 consecutive #1 albums on the Billboard charts - Red Rose Speedway, Band On The Run and Venus & Mars. He launched the Wings Over The World Tour in September 1975, visiting Europe and then heading off to Australia. Of course, the culmination of that tour would be the North American leg the following Spring, which would come on the heels of his 4th straight #1 disc, Wings At The Speed of Sound, and generate his 5th consecutive one, Wings Over America, the 3 disc live set recorded during that tour. This soundboard recording captures his show in Melbourne on November 11, 1975, 5 decades today.

JGB 1975 - Back To Back - #1: According to the blog Lost Live Dead, The Keystone Berkeley was a sawdust covered dump in a sketchy area of town that sold overpriced, watered down beer to a crowd of doubtful lunatics who were never going to be employee of the month, if they even had jobs. Incredibly, Jerry Garcia, even after he and the Dead were selling millions of albums and selling out 80,000 seat stadiums, continued to play the Keystone. In fact, according to the blog Jerry Garcia’s Brokedown Palaces, he played the Keystone at least 206 times between 1971 and 1984. Garcia shows at the Keystone almost never sold tickets in advance. Rather, they were available day of show only, first come, first serve for in a venue that officially held about 500 people Usually, Jerry didn’t come on stage until after 11:00 pm and shows ran right up until 2:00 am - last call - making for very late weeknights for those in attendance. My guess is lots of folks called in sick to work or school the next day. In any event, this soundboard recording captures the Jerry Garcia Band at the Keystone on October 11, 1975, a half century ago today. Led Zep 1975 - Back to Back - #1: During the decade of the 1970s, one band towered above all others - the mighty Led Zeppelin. Their 1975 tour found the band at the peak of their powers, both in the studio and on stage. As the tour launched, Led Zep released the double album Physical Graffiti, which went to #1 on the charts in both the US and UK. The disc also received strong critical reviews. Billboard magazine gave the disc 5 stars while Rolling stone wrote that Physical Graffiti was "the band's Tommy, Beggar's Banquet and Sgt. Pepper rolled into one." On stage, after some early issues due to Page having suffered a broken finger and Plant contacting the flu, the band rounded into form, playing one memorable show after another. In fact, by the end of the run, Plant proclaimed "this has been our most successful tour on every level and I had a great time all the way through." This soundboard recording captures Led Zep in Los Angeles on March 24, 1975, a half century ago today. Download this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this Back To Back set.

Linda Ronstadt - 1975-09-22 - San Jose, CA (SBD)

Early in her career, despite being a favorite of critics, Linda Ronstadt had limited commercial success.  That all changed in 1975. Her album, Heart Like A Wheel, went to number 1 on the Billboard charts, and spawned the number 1 single, You’re No Good, as well as the number #2 hit, When Will I Be Loved. The album went multi-platinum, selling over 2 million copies, and was nominated for a Grammy Award. In March, Rolling Stone featured Ronstadt on its cover, the first of 6 times her photo would grace the front of that publication. Later that year, in September, she released the album Prisoner In Disguise, which would reach the top 5 on the charts and sell over 1 million copies. The single from that disc, Heat Wave, a remake of the 1963 hit by Martha & The Vandellas, would also make the top 5 on the Billboard charts. This soundboard recording captures Ronstadt just after the release of Prisoner In Disguise, in San Jose on September 22 1975, 49 years ago today. Download this one to hear Linda the year she became the Queen of Rock & Roll!

The bad news - the public rehearsal from September 6, 1975, 49 years ago today, is a sometimes very good, sometimes just good, audience recording.  The good news - the private rehearsals, held somewhere between September 1 and 5 (hard to pin down the exact dates) are excellent soundboard recordings. I've done my best to list all the song from those rehearsals, but with 5 different sources, to work with, its quite possible I missed a few. That said, I've included everything in my upload so you can enjoy it all and sort it out for yourself!

For those of you who are old like me, you'll remember when Labor Day weekend meant the Jerry Lewis telethon to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy.  The telethon would start Sunday night and run through Labor day, with Lewis and countless guest stars appealing to viwers at home to call and donate.  Frank Sintatra made his first appearanc on the telethon on September 1, 1975, 49 years ago today, as captured in this TV soundboard recording.  Frank came on stage 3 different times, with each short set including the tune, I Believe I'm Gonna Love You..  By the way, it was Frank who at the next year's telethon reunited Lewis and former partner Dean Martin, who hadn't spoken to one another for 20 years, an emotional moment you can watch here.

In the summer of 1969, Eric Clapton was on tour as part of Blind Faith, the "super group" he had formed earlier that year with Ginger Baker and Steve Winwood.  Clapton was already growing tired of the group, especially the recurrence of the infighting with Ginger Baker, which previously had plagued the final days of Cream. Perhaps that explains why he and the rest of Blind Faith were on different pages when it came to Woodstock.  EC wanted to play the festival but was over ruled by the rest of the band.  Instead they played a show in Santa Barbara, CA, about as far away from Woodstock as you could get!

In any event, this excellent audience recording captures Clapton 6 years after Woodstock, on his 2nd solo tour after his 1974 comeback, in Plao Alto, on August 8, 1975, 49 years ago this very day.  By the way, he gets some help from Woodstock veteran Carlos Santana on the final track!

Led Zeppelin was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 1995, at the head of a class that also included Neil Young, Janis Joplin, the Allman Brothers and Frank Zappa, just to name a few. All 3 surviving members - Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones - attended the ceremony. While the 3 put aside any differences for their set, with the late John Bonhan's son, Jason, on drums. during the induction speech Page and Jones took several shots at one another, resulting in some uncomfortable meoments for all in attendance.

This soundboard recording captures Led Zep in Seattle on March 21, 1976, 40 years ago today, during a tour that found the band at the peak of their powers, both in the studio and on stage. As the tour launched, Led Zep released the double album Physical Graffiti, which went to number 1 on the charts in both the US and UK. In fact, by the end of the run, Plant proclaimed "this has been our most successful tour on every level and I had a great time all the way through."

Led Zeppelin - 1975-02-28 - Baton Rouge, LA (SBD)

When Led Zeppelin launched their North American tour on January 18, 1975, it had been almost 2 years since their last tour, the longest break from performing that the band had taken at that point in their career.  The tour had a bit of a rocky start, as guitarist Jimmy Page was suffering from a broken finger that forced him to use a three finger playing technique during many of the early shows. In addition, Robert Plant contracted a bad case of the flu early in the tour, causing the cancellation of one show and negatively affecting his singing during several others.  The band also needed to work out the kinks associated with incorporating new material from their soon to be released album, Physical Graffiti, into their set list. By February, however,  the band seemed to have overcome all those issues, playing as powerfully as they had at any point in their long storied career. This soundboard recording captures them in Baton Rouge on February 28, 1975, 49 years ago today, from Baton Rouge. When the tour ended, Plant commented that "This has been our most successful tour on every level and I had great time all the way through."
