Bruce Springsteen - 1985-09-01 - East Rutherford, NJ (Ex Aud)

1985: On June 29, 1984, Bruce Springsteen launched the Born In The USA tour in support of the album of the same name, a 156 show extravaganza that ran until October 5, 1985. The album went to #1 on the Billboard charts and stayed in the top 10 for the duration if the entire tour. Robert Christgau gave the album an A+ grade, ranking it as the best disc of 1984. Rolling Stone gave it a 5 star review, and would eventually rank it as #85 on its list of the 500 best albums of all time. The video for Dancing In The Dark, the first single from the album, received extensive airplay on MTv which helped propel it to the #2 position on the Billboard singles charts. In all, the album would yield seven top 10 singles. The tour, which featured Nils Lofgren on guitar in place of Miami Steve Van Zandt, who had left the E-Street Band to pursue a solo career. The 1985 portion of the tour saw Springsteen visit Asia, Australia and Europe, before returning to the US to play his first American outdoor stadium shows, including 6 shows in August at Giants Stadium in his home state of New Jersey.  I had tickets for the August 30th show, but due to a tremendous rain storm that concert had to be moved until September 1.  This excellent audience recording captures that rescheduled show, which toook place 41 years ago today, a 30 song marathon that included Santa Claus Is Coming To Town to end the night! Chistmas came early for all of us at Giants Stadium that night!

On August 23, 1978, 4 dozen years ago today, as captured in this some times excellent, some times very good audience recording, I saw Bruce Springsteen for the first time, which was just the 11th concert I had ever attended up to that point. For Bruce, it was his first time headlining at Madison Square Garden. Springsteen had just recently released the album Darkness On The Edge Of Town, his first disc since 1975's Born to Run, the 3 year gap resulting from a long legal battle with his former manager. The songs on Darkness were leaner than his previous work, and began to reflect his growing social and political awareness. The tour was critical for Bruce, therefore, as he needed to gauge if his new material would resonate with fans and if his live shows would translate to 20,000 seat arenas. The August 23 show I attended was the last of his 3 nights at MSG, and to paraphrase the late, great, John Lennon, lets just say Bruce "passed the audition". Since that show, I've seen Springsteen  headline 8 more times - another concert in 1978, then in 1984, 1985, 1988, twice in 1992, and then twice more in 2003.  I also saw him as a guest of Sir Paul McCartney in both 2017 and 2022. That's 11 times I've seen him on stage across 6 decades!

Bruce Springsteen - 2000-06-17 - MSG, NY, NY (ALD Matrix)

I've attended 9 Springsteen concerts, in 4 different decades (70s, 80s, 90s, & 2000's) with 2 different backing bands (the E-Streeters and those other guys he played with in the 1990s, whoever they were!). On top of that, I've seen Bruce twice in the same year 3 times - 1978, 1992 and 2003! The other 3 shows I attended were in 1984, 1984, and 1988. If that's not enough, I saw Bruce in a 5th decade, the 2010s, when he, along with Miami Steve, were special guests of Paul McCartney on September 15, 2017 at Madison Square Garden, as mentioned in our Sir Paul post yesterday. Then in 2022, as alos mentioned yesterday, I saw Springsteen in a 6th decade, on June 16, 2022 as he was once again a guest of Macca's. So, that's 11 dufferent times I've seen Springsteen take the stage.

This ALD matrix recording captures Springsteen at Madison Sqaure Garden on June 17, 2000, 26 years ago today, during his reunion tour with the E-Street Band which hasd launced in 1999. After an 11 year separation, Bruce Springsteen, decided, to paraphrase the immortal words of John Belushi in The Blue Brothers, to put the band back back together and go on the road. One high point of the tour was a record sold-out, 15-show run at Continental Airlines Arena in New Jersey. Another was a 10-night, sold-out engagement at "The World's Most Famous Arena", which included this show. At key points in each concert, usually during Tenth Avenue Freezeout and his newest song, Land of Hope and Dreams, Springsteen played the role of preacher, calling on his disciples in the crowd to feel the healing power of the Ministry of Rock and Roll. Another special moment each night occurred during If I Should Fall Behind, a song written while Springsteen was away from the E Street band. With the band reunited, the song became a vow of togetherness, with Springsteen, wife Patti Scialfa, Steve Van Zandt, Nils Lofgren, and The Big Man, Clarence Clemons each singing a verse, promising to wait for each other. It was clear that the Boss was glad to be back with his old comrades.

Bruce Springsteen - 1976-04-08 - Cleveland, OH (SBD)

Bruce Springsteen was inducted into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 1999, aong with Billy Joel, Dusty Springfield, and Sir Paul McCartney, just to name a few others. At the time the Hall did his long time back up group, the legendary E Street Band, a disservice by not including them. Springsteen made up for it by inviting the entire band to attend the ceremony, and then bringing them on stage. As he and the band had not played together since 1989, it was a historic moment that became much more. Soon after, a reunion tour was announced. To paraphrase the Blues Brother’s movie “they’re putting the band back together”. By the way, the injustice of omitting the E-Streeters from the hall was corrected in 2014. 

This soundboard recording captures Bruce in the city where the Rock Hall of Fame now resides, on April 8, 1976, a half century ago today. For Springsteen, 1975 had been a breakthrough year as he released Born To Run, played historic concerts at The Bottom Line in NY and The Roxy in Los Angeles, and made the covers of Time and Newsweek in the same week. Yet despite the critical acclaim, Bruce still had not yet graduated to playing arena and stadium size shows. When he went back out on the road in Spring 1976, his road crew referred to the 2 month run of shows as The Chicken Scratch tour. The nickname reflected the meandering route the tour took the south, midwest, and northeast US, hitting numerous small towns where the band had never before played, and often backtracking on itself to get to the next gig. One side note - the Chicken Scrtach tour is also famous for Bruce's visit to Graceland after his April 29 show in Memphis. Upon arrival, he noticed a light on in the house, assumed it meant the King was home, and proceeded to jump the gates. Security intervened, had no idea who he was despite Bruce's efforts to explain he had been on the covers of Time and Newsweek, and politely escorted him to the street.

1980s - #3: On June 4, 1984, Bruce Springsteen released Born In The USA, an album which took him far beyond his traditional fan base in terms of tone, sound and commercial appeal. Filled songs about every day Americans doing their best in the face of hardship, acknowledging that the American Dream was far from perfect, Born In The USA saw Springsteen take a political tone for the first time in his music. The album also was his first deliberate attempt to write a popular hit song, and he succeeded beyond even his wildest expectations. The first single from the disc, Dancing In The Dark (notable for Courtney Cox’s appearance in the video dancing with Bruce), went to #2 on the Billboard charts. Six other tunes from Born In The USA would also crack the top 10. The album itself went to #1, and garnered Springsteen 3 Grammy Award nominations. The disc also featured Springsteen’s first use of a synthesizer in his music, another bow to the current trends in pop music. Critics loved the disc, with Robert Christgau giving it a grade of A+ and the Village Voice awarding it album of the year. Bruce launched a massive 15 month tour in support of the album, playing 156 show on 4 continents. They played I Saw her Standing There, and when the crowd wouldn't stop screaming when it was over, Macca did the only thing he could do - count them down into a 2nd rendition of the same song. Yep back to back versions of I Saw her Standing There featuring Sir Paul, Bruce and Miami Steve. Then 3 years ago, I saw Springsteen in a 6th decade, on June 16, 2022 as he was once again a guest of Macca's. Bruce played Glory Days, with Macca on backing viocals, then the 2 of them dueted on the Beatles' tune, I Wanna Be Your Man. Bruce also came back during the closing Abbey Road medley to add some guitar work! So, that's 11 dufferent times I've seen Springsteen take the stage.

In Dcember 2001, Bruce Springsteen played 5 concerts in Asbury Park, billed on the marquee as “Bruce Springsteen with the Max Weinberg 7 and Friends – A Holiday Show".  This soundboard recording captures the last of the 5 nights, on December 8, 2001, 2 dozen years ago today. The lucky ones who got tickets for the show were treated to a Springsteen concert unlike any other. Bruce's take on holiday tunes, such Santa Claus Is Coming To Town and Merry Christmas Baby, were paired with long lost favorites, such Thundercrack. E Street band members Max Weinberg, Nils Lofgren and Patti Scialfa each got to step out front on several tunes. Friends Elvis costello, Bruce Hornsby and Garland Jeffreys joined in the fun, Another of Bruce’s friends, Southside Johnny, expressed the feelings of everyone in attendance when he led the band through his classic tune, I Don’t Want To Go Home. This one is a holiday treat!

2000s -#5: The tragic events of Sept 11, 2001 brought an outpouring of support for the city of New York from the rock and roll community..From the America: A Tribute to Heroes telethon about a week after the attack to the Concert for New York in October, rock’s biggest stars – Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Bill Joel, The Who, U2, and David Bowie, just to name a few – turned out to support the battered, but always resilient city. Few gave as much as did New Jersey’s own Bruce Springsteen. He opened the telethon with the song My City of Ruins, originally written for Asbury Park, but now transformed into “a prayer for our fallen brothers and sisters." From that tune emerged an entire album dedicated to the memory of 9-11, an album fittingly titled The Rising, because New York would not bow down to the terrorists who attempted to destroy her will. Springsteen’s work on The Rising was some of the best of his career. When the album debuted in early 2002, it went straight to #1 on the charts, with glowing reviews from the critics. Springsteen took his message of hope on the road, launching The Rising Tour on August 7, 2002, at the Meadowlands Arena in New Jersey. Springsteen 2009 - Back To Back - #2: Welcome to part 2 of our “Back to Back” entry featuring Bruce Springsteen at Giants Stadium in 2009. This soundboard recording captures night 2 on October 3, 2009, 16 years ago today, when Springsteen played the entire Born In The USA album. Springsteen 2009 - Back To Back - #1: When Bruce Springsteen brought his Working On A Dream tour to Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ for 4 shows in October 2009, fans felt a mixture of excitement and sadness. Of course any concert on Bruce’s home turf raised the emotional stakes, but these shows had special meaning for his audience. On the one hand, each show would feature an entire album played in its entirety, a rare and treat. On the other hand, the 5 concerts would be the last that Springsteen would play in Giants Stadium, as the building would be demolished in 2010 to make way for Met Life Stadium. Springsteen played 25 shows at Giants Stadium between 1985 and 2009, more than any other artist, including a 10 night run in July and August 2003. His October 9 show on this stand would be the last concert ever played in the venue. Springsteen wrote a new song to commemorate the venue, entitled Wrecking Ball. Wrecking Ball would open all 5 shows on this run, and would go on to become the title track for Bruce’s 2012 album release. This soundboard recording captures Bruce on October 2, 2009, 16 years ago today, on night 1 at Giants Stadium, and features Darkness of The Edge of Town, only the 2nd time the album had been played live in it entirety. Bruce Springsteen - 2002-08-12 - New York, NY (IEM Matrix)

Bruce Springsteen had really no connections to Jerry Garcia or the Grateful Dead. As he admits in his autobiography, he went to one show and didn't get it at the time. Only years later did he come to appreciate Garcia's playing style and what the Dead were all about. Bruce's right hand man, however, the one and only Big Man on the saxophone, Clarence Clemons, was well connected to Jerry and the Dead. Clemons sat in with the Grateful Dead for at least 5 shows in 1988 and 1989. As such, he joined a select list of horn players to sit in with the Dead, which included such legends as Branford Marsalis and David Murray. In addition, Clarence played 7 concerts with the Jerry Garcia Band in the fall of 1989. Those shows that were so good that 5 of them have now been officially released - September 1, 2, 5, 6 and 16.  Blair Jackson documents all of Clarence's appearances with the Dead and Jerry in this article. By the way, at one point, Garcia and Weir actually considered inviting Clarence to join the Grateful Dead as a full time member. According to Weir, it was in the early 1990s, right after Springsteen broke up the E-Street band (temporarily, it turned out). It might have worked according to Weir, except that a couple members of the Dead “hated saxophones”. Go here to read more about how close Clarence came to being a Dead Head!

Paul McCartney - 2022-06-25 - Glastonbury, Pilton, UK (Webcast)

On June 16, 2022, I saw Sir Paul McCartney for the 9th time, a concert at Met Life stadium, just 2 days before his 80th birthday! Another 3 hour masterpiece, which included a guest appearance by Bruce Springsteen, for 2 songs, his Glory Days and The Beatles I Wanna Be Your Man. Bruce also sat in during the closing Abbey Road medley to add some blistering guitar work. The encore included a 2nd guest appearance, by a virtual John Lennon.  Using footage from the Rooftop Concert, Paul and John did a virtual duet on I've Got A Feeling, and there wasn't a dry eye in the house. Given Sir Paul's age, I may never get to see him live again, but the memories, especially from the last 4 shows which I attended with my wife and twin sons, will last forever. This webcast recording captures Sir Paul just 9 days after that MetLife show, on June 25, 2022, 3 years ago today, doing what any 80 year old would do - headlining the Glastonbury Festival for the 2nd time!.  The set includes the same guest spots by Springsteen, the virtual duet with John, plus an appearance by David Grohl during Band On The Run and The End.

Nuclear Disarmament Rally - 1982-06-12 - Central Park, NY (FM)

On June 12, 1982, 43 years ago today, a rock & roll "festival" was once again at the heart of a movement for social and political change. As the UN debated the issue of nuclear weapons, 750,000 people marched into New York's Central Park, demanding the removal of the “nuclear sword of Damocles,” that President John F. Kennedy two decades earlier had seen poised, “hanging by the slenderest of threads,” over the heads of every human being alive (and uncountable multitudes not yet born). Nothing like it had ever happened before  or since. The rally was not only the largest antinuclear demonstration ever, but also the largest political demonstration of any kind in American history. The day ended with a concert on the Great Lawn, featuring Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, James Taylor Linda Ronstadt and many more. Of course, WNEW-FM, the station whose motto was 'where rock lives" was there, as it had been for so many historic concerts, broadcasting live. Was the rally effective - well by year's end a referendum calling for the immediate halt of nuclear weapons deployments appeared on the ballot in 10 states, 37 cities and counties, and the District of Columbia. It passed almost everywhere. Moreover, polls showed that 85 percent of Americans supported the nuclear freeze movement.  The power of rock & roll!

In 1985, the first Rock In Rio festival took place from Janaury 11 to 20, 1985, with Queen, George Benson, Rod Stewart, AC/DC, and Yes each headlining for two nights. Since then, not only have 8 more incrnations of the fevent been held in Rio, but the festival has also expanded to locations such as Lisbon, Madrid and even Las Vegas! Bruce Springsteen headlined the final night of the 5th edition of the Lisbon version of the festival, on June 3, 2012, 13 years ago today. The last 19 tracks were broadcast on FM radio, while the first 5 are provided via a very good audience recording. Springsteen was on tour in support of his 17th studio album, entitled Wrecking Ball, which would eventually climb to #1 on the Billboard charts. The tour would encompass 133 shows, take Bruce and the E-street Band to 4 continents, and gross over $340 million. The tour was also the first without Clarence Clemons, who had passed away in 2011. Jake Clemons, Clarence's nephew, took over for his uncle on saxophone.

2000s - #1: On September 25, 2007, Bruce Springsteen released Magic, his 15th studio album and first with the E-Street Band since The Rising in 2002. The album debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts, becoming Springsteen's eighth #1 album in the US. Just a week after the album’s release, Bruce launched a world tour, which would run until August 30, 2008 and encompass 100 shows over 5 legs, 3 in the US and 2 in Europe. This IEM matrix recording captures Bruce and the band on the 2nd US leg, in San Jose, on April 5, 2008, 17 years ago today. Less than 2 weeks later, organst Danny Federici, who had been battling melonoma, passed away, casting a shadow on what had otherwise been a joyous tour for Bruce and the E-street Band.

The tragic events of Sept 11, 2001 brought an outpouring of support for the city of New York from the rock and roll community..From the America: A Tribute to Heroes telethon about a week after the attack to the Concert for New York in October, rock’s biggest stars – Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Bill Joel, The Who, U2, and David Bowie, just to name a few – turned out to support the battered, but always resilient city. Few gave as much as did New Jersey’s own Bruce Springsteen. He opened the telethon with the song My City of Ruins, originally written for Asbury Park, but now transformed into “a prayer for our fallen brothers and sisters." From that tune emerged an entire album dedicated to the memory of 9-11, an album fittingly titled The Rising, because New York would not bow down to the terrorists who attempted to destroy her will. Springsteen’s work on The Rising was some of the best of his career. When the album debuted in early 2002, it went straight to #1 on the charts, with glowing reviews from the critics. Springsteen took his message of hope on the road, launching The Rising Tour on August 7, 2002, at the Meadowlands Arena in New Jersey. This soundboard recording captures Bruce & The E-Street Band during that historic tour, in Atlanta, on December 2, 2002, 22 years ago today.  Never forget!
