Sir Elton, in recent years, has mixed tours with his full band with solo acoustic performances. Having been to one of those in 1999, which is the story for another post, I'm amazed how he can play for over 3 hours with no break and no help. This amazing audience recording (you'll swear it's a soundboard), captures Elton in Portland, Maine on February 28, 2008, 7 years ago today. The set list is incredible, spanning Elton's entire career and includes some rare tunes, such as I Need You To Turn To and Ticking. This one is a must have!

On February 27, 2009, 6 years ago today,  U2 released No Line on the Horizon, the band's 12th studio album. It was the band's first record since How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb in 2004.  marking the longest gap between studio albums of U2's career to that point.  The disc would to #1 on the charts in over 20 countries around the world, including the US and UK.  Later that year, U2 would launch the 360° Tour in support of the album, which would run for over 2 years and encompass 110 shows on 5 continents.  on the night of the album's release, however, the band played a smaller gig, a roof top concert atop the BBC broadcasting House as captured in this FM broadcast.

When Sting released his 4th solo album in 1993, it was just 1 less than he had produced during his entire tenure with The Police. That album, Ten Summoner’s Tales, went to #2 on both the US and British charts, while achieving triple platinum status in less than a year. Ten Summoner’s Tales, would be nominated for 6 Grammys, and win 3, including Best Pop Vocal performance for If I Ever Lose My Faith In You, the first single from the album. That tune would reach #17 on the Billboard charts in the US, while another song from the album, Fields of Gold, would climb to #23. Sting launched a world tour in support of the album, which would take him to all 6 inhabited continents. This soundboard recording captures him during that tour on February 26, 1994, 21 years ago today in New Jersey. By the way, just recently Sting appeared across the river from NJ, starring on Broadway in a play he wrote, entitled The Last Ship!

The Eagles - 1995-02-25 - Minneapolis, MN (SBD) 

In 1980, after years of infighting, the Eagles called it quits. Don Henley, when asked if and when the band would reunite, famously replied, “when hell freezes over”. Apparently, that’s exactly what must have happened in April 1994, as Henley, along with Glen Frey, Joe Walsh, Don Felder and Timothy B. Schmit, took the stage for an MTV special. At that show, Frey, with tongue in cheek, announced that “for the record, we never broke up, we just took a 14-year vacation". The ensuing world tour lasted well into 1996, re-establishing The Eagles as one of rock’s leading acts. The tour spawned the aptly titled live album Hell Freezes Over, which debuted at number 1 on the Billboard charts. The disc also included four new studio songs, with Get Over It and Love Will Keep Us Alive, both becoming Top 40 hits. The album proved as successful as the reunion tour, selling 6 million copies in the U.S. This soundboard recording captures The Eagles during that historic tour on February 22. 1995, 2 decades ago this very day.

Grateful Dead - 1992-02-24 - Oakland CA (SBD)

In early 1992, the Dead warmed up for the East Coast sprig tour with 3 shows at the Oakland Coliseum, just across the Bay Bridge from their hometown of San Francisco. The band debuted several new songs at these shows including, Way To Go Home, Corrina, Wave To The Wind, and my personal favorite, So Many Roads.This soundboard recording captures the last of those 3 nights, on February 24, 1992, 23 years ago today. Unfortunately for the Dead, the first half of 1992 was really the last time the band played well on a consistent basis. In the summer of that year, Garcia suffered another medical set back, related to the 1986 incident that had left him in a diabetic coma. The Dead were forced to cancel their 1992 fall tour. While they hit the road again in 1993, the Dead never quite regained form and we sadly lost Jerry, far too soon, in August 1995.

Hot Tuna - 1997-02-22 - Shizuoka, Japan (SBD) 

Today, we feature another 1960s act that has persevered over the last 5 decades. Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Cassidy, founding members of the Jefferson Airplane, formed Hot Tuna in 1969 as a menas for the duo to explore their love of blues and traditional folk tunes. Initially an acoustic act, Hot Tuna eventually incorporated electric sets into their live shows. This soundboard recording captures Jorma and Jack in Japan on February 22, 1997, 18 years go today.

In 2013, the Rolling Stones launched their 50 And Counting Tour to commemorate the band’s 50th anniversary. They clearly weren’t kidding about the “and counting part” as on February 21, 2014, just one year ago today, they launched the 14 on Fire tour in Abu Daabi, as captured in this IEM Matrix recording. The tour would travel to Asia, Europe and Australia after the opening concert, encompassing a total of 28 additional shows before coming to a close in November.

Bruce Springsteen - 2003-02-19 - Somerville, MA (SBD)

On February 19 and 20, 2003, Bruce Springsteen and Patty Scialfa played two benefit concerts for the now-defunct DoubleTake magazine at the Somerville Theatre. DoubleTake was a magazine about the documentary film world and had stopped its operations due to financial problems. Backstreets.com noted: The 2 shows were  “Master Class”-style performances, in which Springsteen offered glimpses into his songwriting craft, explicating songs line-by-line, and even taking questions from the audience. Backstreets.co noted "While a stunning change of pace from the recent E Street Band shows, very few fans actually got to witness those performances (and only after paying big bucks) - and by the time the Q&A session bit the dust on the second night, one kinda had the feeling that it’d never happen again.” And they didn't.  So that what makes this soundboard recording from night one, on February 19, 2003, a dozen years ago today, a must have for any Springsteen fan!

In 1975, after years with Atlantic records, Willie released his first album with Columbia, entitled Red Headed Stranger. The disc tells the tale of a fugitive on the run from the law after killing his wife and her lover. Despite Columbia's concerns about the album’s sparse musical arrangements (it featured just guitar, piano and drums), Red Headed Stranger certified multi-platinum, making Willie one of the most recognized artists in country music. His cover of Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain, released as a single from album, became his first number one hit. Twenty years after the release of his classic disc, Willie continued to be a musical and social force, touring constantly while also promoting Farm Aid, which he helped co-found with Neil Young and John Mellencamp in 1985. This soundboard recording captures Willie at Foxwoods Casino on February 17, 1995, 2 decades ago today.

Van Morrison, while serving as the lead singer for Them, released his first single, Gloria, in October 1964! Some 5 decades later, he continues to record and tour, often accompanied by his daughter, Shana. This excellent audience recording, for example, captures Van and Shana on February 17, 2014, just a year ago today, in Brighton. He may be inscrutable some times, and downright ornery at others, but he is still the one and only Van The Man, whose live performances often take on the feeling of a religious revival, prompting his backing band to ask “Did Ye Get Healed Tonight”. The answer, far more often than not, is a resounding YES!

In 2001, he released his sixteenth album, entitled The Tiki Bar Is Open. Backing Hiatt on the disc were The Goners, who also played on his 1988 disc, Slow Turning. In 1987, Eric Clapton opened the year with a series of concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in London. That tradition would last for another 9 years, until 1996. For even more on EC and the Royal Albert Hall, go here Over that decade, EC played countless memorable shows at the RAH, including shows with a full orchestra behind him. Highlights from the 1990 and 1991 runs were captured on the live album 24 Nights. While 24 Nights is a wonderful album, I’ve never been a big fan of live discs that pick and choose songs from different nights on the tour. Every concert has its own unique feel and rhythm and live compilation albums can never capture that energy or emotion. That’s why we all love bootlegs, because we get to hear the show exactly as it happened, spectacular moments, unexpected surprises and even outright flubs. In that vein, this soundboard recording captured Slowhand at the RAH on February 17, 1991, 2 dozen years ago today. Download this one then come back tomorrow for a 2nd night of EC at the RAH.

While our 1990s and Beyond theme primarily focuses of 1960s/1970s rock acts who have continued to make great music some 4 decades after their debuts, we’re not forgetting about some of the newer artists that came along near the ned of last century. Earlier this month we brought you the Black Crowes and today we have Blues Traveler. Blues Traveler formed in Princeton, New Jersey in 1987. were considered a key part of the re-emerging jam band scene of the 1990s, spearheading the H.O.R.D.E. touring music festival. Fronted by singer and harmonica player John Popper, the band garnered mainstream success in 1994, with the release of their 4th album appropriately titled Four. The album peaked at #8 on the Billboard charts, and yielded the singles Run-Around & Hook, which charted at #8 & #23 respectively. This FM broadcast captures the band on tour in support of Four, on February 16, 1995, 2 decades ago today, in New Orleans.

Nick Lowe - 2012-02-15 - Dublin, Ireland (HQ Aud) 

As long time readers of this blog know. I’m a big fan of Nick Lowe both his work with Rockpile and his solo efforts. I was hooked the first time I listened to Lowe’s 1978 album Pure Pop for Now People, recorded with his Rockpile band mates, which included such tracks as So It Goes, Heart of The City, They Called It Rock, I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass and Rollers Show, the last being a lounge in cheek look at the short lived phenomenon, The Bay City Rollers! By the way, only Nick could come up with 2 fantastic titles for the same album! The UK version of the disc was entitled Jesus Of Cool, but the record company, afraid that the title might upset US audiences, had it renamed. So, Lowe came up with the almost as great Pure Pop For Now People moniker for the US version. In any event, over 3 decades after his debut, Nick is still touring and delivering great live music. This high quality audience recording captures Lowe in Dublin on February 15, 2012, 3 years ago this very day.

Joe Cocker - 1995-02-15- Santa Barbara, CA (FM) 

Back on December 22, 2014, rock lost a legend, when Joe Cocker passed away at the age of 70. A veteran of Woodstock, Cocker did what few thought possible - cover Beatle songs and make them sound like his own. His versions of With A Little Help From My Friends and She Came In Through The Bathroom Window are standards for how to cover a tune the right way. Cocker had 3 top 10 hits in the US, the Letter at #7, You are So Beautiful and #5 and Up Where We Belong, his duet with with Jennifer Warnes, that went to #1. By the way, if you follow JustDave’s blog, you’ll know that he sang You Are So Beautiful to his lovely wife Rosebud when he proposed to her! In memory of and tribute to the late great Joe Cocker, we bring you this soundboard recording of his concert from February 15, 1995, 2 decades ago today.

From February 8 to 24, Salt Lake City played host to the Winter Olympics, the first winter games helf in the US since the 1980 event held 2 decades prior in Lake Placid. Approximately 2,400 athletes from 78 nations participated in 78 events in fifteen different sports. As part of the festivities, each night featured a 1 hour concert iheld at the Olympic Medals Plaza, a venue that could accommodate 20,000 spectators. Among the featured acts were Dave Matthews, Creed, Train, Foo Fighters and Sheryl Crow. This soundboard recording captures Shery’s Olympic set on February 14, 2002. 13 years ago today.

For Valentine’s Day, we’re appropriately going to let the ladies take the spotlight, as we’ll feature concerts from The Pretenders, and later today, Sheryl Crow. In 1999, the Pretenders released their 7th studio album, entitled ¡Viva El Amor! Which is Spanish for Long Live Love. The album’s cover photo of Chrissie Hynde was taken by Linda Eastman shortly before she passed away in 1998. While not as successful as the band’s prior disc, Last Of The Independents, Viva El Amor generally received good reviews, including a 4 star rating from Melody Maker and an A- grade from Robert Christgau This soundboard recording captures the band on tour in support of the album on February 14, 2000, 15 years ago today.

One of the reasons we chose The 1990s and Beyond as our February theme is to remind folks how many of the incredible artists from the 1960s and 1970s are still rocking over 4 decades later! This soundboard recording from February 13, 1994, 21 years ago today, is a perfect example. That night, David Crosby and Graham Nash, always activists who believed in using rock music to support political and social causes, played a benefit concert for SEVA. They were joined on stage by Phil Lesh of The Grateful Dead and Jorma Kaukonen of Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna. The SEVA foundation, an international health organization, is best known for its work in Africa and Asia, but began helping Native American communities in the US in 1982. Since 1979, rock musicians have partnered with SEVA to raise funds. Artists such as the Grateful Dead, The Band, Bruce Hornsby, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Graham Nash, Country Joe McDonald, Maria Muldaur and Paul Simon, just to name a few, have participated in dozens of shows over the last 36 years (go here for more on SEVA benefit concerts)

The Police - 2007-02-12 - Los Angeles, CA (FM)

On February 11, 2007, The Police reunited after being apart for almost 20 years for a performance at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles. As they took the stage for the Grammy’s, the trio proclaimed "Ladies and gentlemen, we are The Police, and we're back!” The next day, at a press conference and mini concert at the Whiskey a Go Go, they announced they would launch a world tour starting in Vancouver on May 28. This FM broadcast captures that historic moment at the Whiskey on February 12, 2007, 8 years ago today. The tour would last well over a year, with the final show played held on August 7, 2008 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The Police sold 3.7 million tickets and grossed $358 million during their reunion sojourn, making it the third-highest-grossing tour of all-time at its conclusion.

Neil Young - 2008-02-11 - Antwerp, Belgium (SBD)

In March 2005, while working on the Prairie Wind album in Nashville, Neil Young was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm. He was treated successfully in an operation performed in a New York hospital on March 29. Two days later, Young passed out on a New York street from bleeding from the femoral artery, which surgeons had used to access the aneurysm. Neil was again treated, and again, recovered. After 2 such close brushes with death, most people would have probably retired to a nice quiet life, thankful to still have some more days ahead of them. Neil Young, however, is not most people. His life since the aneurysm has been as busy as prior to the operation. By September 2005, Prairie Wind had been released, and the album's live premiere in Nashville was immortalized by filmmaker Jonathan Demme in the 2006 film, Neil Young: Heart of Gold. The next year, he was back on the road with CSNY as part of the Freedom of Speech tour, protesting the policies of then President George Bush. In 2007, he released Chrome Dreams II, a sequel to an album he never released! Typical Neil -- always doing things his way! He continued to tour extensively, playing over 100 shows in 2007 and 2008 combined. This soundboard recording catches Neil in Belgium on February 11, 2008, 7 years ago today and just about 3 years after his aneurysm. Download this and you’ll see (and hear) that despite all he’s been through, Neil can still rock with the best of them.

I’ll admit it - I cheated a bit on this one. On January 27, 2014, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, along with a host of special guests, recorded a special for CBS entitled The Night That Changed America. The show was a tribute to one of the most legendary moments in rock history, The Beatles historic appearance on the Ed Sullivan show on February 9, 1964. The special was aired at 8 pm on Sunday night February 9, 2014, exactly 50 years to the day and time that the Beatles took the stage for the Sullivan show. Knowing I was featuring 1990 & Beyond in February, and understanding the significance of this event, I decided to post it not on the day it was recorded but rather on the date it aired. So, here it is from just a year ago today, a soundboard recording of the Paul & Ringo, alone & together, commemorating the Beatles arrival in the US, a nigh that changed not just America, but also the entire world!

In the early 1990’s, Tom Petty took a break from the Heartbreakers to work ion his second solo album, Wildflowers, which was released in 1994. He reunited the band, however, in 1995, and in 1996 released a disc which served as the soundtrack to the film, She’s The One. The album went to #15 on the Billboard charts. In January and February 1997, Petty and the Heartbreakers played a 10 night run at the Fillmore in San Francisco, in addition to songs from the She’s The One album, Heartbreaker classics and tunes from Petty’s solo career, each nigh featured a host of incredible cover tunes. This soundboard or FM broadcast, captures the last night of The Fillmore run, on February 7, 1997, 18 years ago today.
