Earlier this month we brought you Elvis Costello's 2013 set at the Bridge School Benefit. Since Costello has been a frequent guest at the Bridge School, we figured we should bring you another show from the former Declan Patrick Aloysius Macmanus. This FM broadcast features Elvis with Burt Bacharach in London on October 29, 1998, 18 years ago today. In early 1997 Elvis began working with songwriting legend Burt Bacharach on a song, God Give Me Strength, for the soundtrack for the film Grace of My Heart.. The collaboration was so successful that they recorded an album together, entitled Painted By Memory.  The duo also recorded a version of Bacharach's I'll Never Fall In Love again for the 2nd Austin Powers movie (go here to see their guest spot in the film). They also played a limited series of concerts together, including this one.  Unfortunately, the BBC broadcast only captures part of the concert, missing out on a host of medleys of Bacharach's classics.

When Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young launched their CSNY2K tour on January 24, 2000, it marked the first time the foursome had toured together since their turbulent 1974 reunion tour. Over a ¼ of a century had passed, which made their opening number each night, the legendary tune Carry On, both fitting and ironic. The set list for every show featured a mix of the band’s classics, as well as solo work from each member. Some nights, Crosby even reached back into his days with the Byrds to deliver an electrifying version of 8 Miles High. Throughout the tour, though, it was Neil who stood the tallest, stomping around the stage and providing the hard edge that CSN on its own sometimes lacked. Neil’s Rocking in the Free World and Long May You Run closed most nights, showcasing his diverse range of musical styles. Fittingly, the tour ended with 2 shows at The Bridge School, concerts with a cause, reminiscent of their days together in the 1960s and 1970s when they used the power of rock music to help bring about social change This FM broadcast captures that 2nd Bridge School show, the final one of an historic tour, on October 29, 2000, 16 years ago today. .

November's Theme At So Many Roads

Well, for the last 2 month's, we've used our them to celebrate charitable causes - Farm Aid and The Bridge School;.  We plan to keep that streak going here in November.  As Thanksgiving approaches, we tend to think of feasts, food, family and friends. But for many in this country and across the world, food isn't a given.  HUNGER remains one of the greatest problems across the globe.  So, in November our theme will be Stop Hunger, Feed The World. We'll feature artists who have supported causes such as Live Aid, Feed America, Hungerthon  and Why Hunger that seek to eradicate hunger and ensure that every human being has the food needed to survive.  We'll feature some extra posts from Bruce Springsteen, CSNY (together and apart), U2 and The Grateful Dead, all of whom have been very active in support these causes. It all should add up to a very worthwhile celebration of the 7th anniversary for So Many Roads.

I rarely ask anything of my readers, but this month I'l make an exception.  Please, if you enjoy the music we have been bringing you for the last 7 years, and you have food on your table each night, then take a moment and go to WhyHunger and donate. I give every year, having listened to Hungerthon on WNEW-FM when it was the premier rock station in all of America.  It would mean a great deal to me if my blog could inspire others to support this worthy cause.

Enjoy the tunz!  Support the cause!

In the period since Jerry Garcia's passing, the former members of the band have played together and apart in numerous configurations such as The Other Ones The Dead, Further, Ratdog, Phil & Friends,  Dead & Ccmpany,  etc., but only the first band on that list ever played at the Bridge School. This high quality audience recording (actually the download includes 3 different tapes - pick the one you like best) captures The Other Ones at their only Bridge School appearance on October 27, 2002, 14 years ago today.

Los Lobos made their only Bridge School appearance in 2005. This soundboard recording captures then 6 years earlier, and 17 years ago today, on October 21, 1999, in Texas.  By the way, I love the La Bamba > Good Lovin' > La Bamba segue to end the show - it's like the inverse of the Good Lovin' > La Bamba > Good Lovin combo that I saw the Dead  perform at my favorite show on September 18, 1987!
