I saw Pat Benatar twice in the early 1980s, once on November 22, 1980 at the Palladium in New York and then again on August 1, 1981 at the South Mountain Music Fair in West Orange NJ. The 2nd show is notable because its the same night that MTv debuted. Ms. Benatar's cover of the Rascal's tune You Better Run was the 2nd video ever played on MTv, following the most appropriate Video Killed The Radio Star. The 40 years passed - yes 4 whole decades - before I saw Pat again in November 2021 in Morristown.  That's the longest gap beteen seeing an artist since I first started attending concerts way back in 1976.  As I mentioned earlier this month, the next longest gaps are America - 38 years between my first America concert in 1978 and the 2nd one in 2016, John Hiatt - 34 years between seeing John in 1987 and then in 2021, and The Pretenders - 31 years betweem seeing them in 1987 and then again in 2018.

1970s - #2: In October 1979, Pat Benatar released her first album, In The Heat of The Night. Having already released 2 singles that year that failed to chart, expectations for the album were minimal. Benatar herself said "My album was the last of a bunch by female singers to come out so I was told not to expect much, even though Mike Chapman was producing." Instead, the album went to #12 on the Billboard charts, propelling Pat to stardom. The next single, Heartbreaker, released in December 1979, was a smash hit, climbing to #23 on the charts. As the 1970s became the 1980s, Pat Benatar would become the leading lady of rock and roll, winning 4 consecutive Grammy Awards for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance, from 1980 to 1983. This FM broadcast captures Pat on tour in support of that first album, at the Bottom Line in New York, on November 3, 1979, 36 years ago today.

1980: In August 1980, Pat Benatar released her 2nd album, Crimes of Passion, featuring the hit single Hit Me with Your Best Shot, which cracked the top 10 on the Billboard charts. The album did even better, peaking at #2 for 5 consecutive weeks in early 1981 and selling over 5 million copies. The album also earned Benatar her first Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. In August 1981, the video of You Better Run, another cut from the album, would become the 2nd video ever played on MTV. This WNEW-FM broadcast captures Ms. Benatar at the Palladium in New York on November 22, 1980, 44 years ago today, while on tour in support of Crimes of Passion. I was there, the first of 3 times seeing Ms. Benatar, the others being in August 1981, and then, 4 decades later, the longest gap for me between seeing an artist, in October 2021!

In June 1997, Pat Benatar, the 1980s Queen of Rock, released her 10th studio album, entitled Innamorata.  While the disc barely cracked the top 200 on the Billboard charts, peaking at 171, critic Howard Cohen called the disc "her most honest album, and it's her best."  In any event, despite the mixed commercial and critical feedback, Benatar launched a tour in support of the album.  This FM broadcast captures her a few month's prior to its release, in LAs vegas, on March 30, 1997, 2 dozen years ago today.

1982 - In the early 1980’s, Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, had a vision. He would bring a large scale rock and roll festival to Southern California that would unite music, television, computer technology, and people, all while addressing logistical issues such as overcrowding, traffic control, and lack of facilities that had plagued earlier festivals. Thus, the US Festivals were born. Somehow, he pulled it off twice, in September 1982 and May 1983, hosting 2 events that were each attended by hundreds of thousands of fans with minimal issues, despite 115-degree heat at the first US show. The two festivals included large air-conditioned tents featuring the US Festival Technology Exposition, a dazzling display of then-cutting edge computers, software, and electronic music devices. Bill Graham handled booking and running the concerts, which clearly contributed to their operational success. Of course, Wozniak’s deep pockets didn’t hurt, as he could afford to lose almost $20 million on the 2 festivals. At the first festival, days 1 and 2 primarily featured new wave and punk bands such as The Clash, The Police, The B52’s, The Talking Heads and Pat Benatar. 1980s - #4: When Pat Benatar played in Ft. Lauderdale on January 14, 1980, 38 years ago today, her single Heartbreaker, released in December 1979, was rising up the Billboard charts. WSHE-FM in Ft. Lauderdale took the opportunity, therefore, to broadcast the rising star's concert from The Rendezvous that January night. neither the station nor Benatar, however, could have been prepared for what would happen. Three songs into the show, the building had to be cleared due to a bomb threat. The surreal and scary scene is described live by the WSHE on air hosts.  After a lengthy delay, police declared the building was secure and let the crowd back in to the club. WSHE picked up the broadcast and Benatar finished the show. Seems like a bomb scare was about the only thing that could stop Ms. Benatar, as she would go on to win 4 consecutive Grammy Awards for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance, from 1980 to 1983

On August 1, 1981, my buddies and I went to the South Mountain Music Fair in West Orange NJ to catch Pat Benatar, with lead in act Billy Squier, whose tune The Stroke, was a huge hit at the time. (By the way, South Mountain wasn’t really aa fair or an amphitheater or anything quite like that – it was a side of a cliff! See this post for more detail.) Benatar’s 3rd album, Precious Time, had just hit the top of the US charts; while the single from the disc, Fire and Ice, would go on to win the singer her 2nd Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Performance. That same day, MTV debuted, and Benatar’s video of You’d Better Run, became the 2nd video ever played by the station, right after Video Killed The Radio Star! To say the Pat was the Queen of Rock in the summer of 1981 would be an understatement. While I have never found a recording from the show I attended, I do have this FM broadcast from the same tour, from Austin on October 6, 1981, 34 years ago today. Pat sings 4 songs off Precious Time, the title track, the aforementioned Fire and Ice, Promises in the Dark, and a cover of Helter Skelter, as well as earlier hits such as I Need A Lover, Heartbreaker, and Hell Is For Children. And yes, You Better Run also makes an appearance, helping support that then new phenomenon known as MTV.

In November 1985, Pat Benatar released her sixth studio album, Seven the Hard Way. The title of the album is based on a type of bet in craps. The album was the Benatar’s seventh release in seven years, though it was the first to only certify as gold after the first 6 had all reached platinum status. Seven The Hard Way went to #26 on the Billboard charts and yielded the top 10 single Invincible and the top 40 hit, Sex As A Weapon. This FM broadcast captures Benatar on tour in support of Seven The Hard Way on Portland on March 31, 1986, 28 years ago today. After this tour, she would score one more gold album with Wide Awake In Dreamland in 1988, then yield her spot as the Queen of rock and roll the early 1990s to one Ms. Sheryl Crow.
