James Taylor - 1971-01-25 - Fillmore East (early show) (SBD)

JT 1971 - #1: In February 1970, James Taylor released Sweet Baby James, the album which put his career on the map. The disc reached #3 on the Billboard charts, as did the single Fire and Rain. Critics hailed the disc as a folk rock masterpiece. In January 1971, he began work on his next album, Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon, which would be released in April of that year. That album would go to #2 on the charts, and the single from it, You’ve Got A Friend, would hit the top of the charts. Taylor would also receive a Grammy for that song. This soundboard recording of the early show at the Fillmore East, from January 25, 1971, 44 years ago today, captures Taylor right between his 2 biggest selling albums. While he does not play You’ve Got A Friend, several other tunes from his then upcoming album are included in the set list, such as Riding On A Railroad. Highway Song and Hey Mister, That’s Me Up On The Jukebox. In addition, he plays some of his most famous tunes from Sweet Baby James, including the title track, Fire and Rain and Country Road. JGB 1983 - Back To Back - #1: According to the blog Lost Live Dead, The Keystone Berkeley was a sawdust covered dump in a sketchy area of town that sold overpriced, watered down beer to a crowd of doubtful lunatics who were never going to be employee of the month, if they even had jobs. Incredibly, Jerry Garcia, even after he and the Dead were selling millions of albums and selling out 80,000 seat stadiums, continued to play the Keystone. In fact, according to the blog Jerry Garcia’s Brokedown Palaces, he played the Keystone at least 206 times between 1971 and 1984. Garcia shows at the Keystone almost never sold tickets in advance. Rather, they were available day of show only, first come, first serve for in a venue that officially held about 500 people Usually, Jerry didn’t come on stage until after 11:00 pm and shows ran right up until 2:00 am - last call - making for very late weeknights for those in attendance. My guess is lots of folks called in sick to work or school the next day. In any event, this soundboard and audience recording captures show #198 for Jerry from the Keystone, on January 23, 1983, 31 years ago today.  Downlead this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this Back To Back entry..

GD 1969 - Back To Back - #2:  As promised, here's our 2nd post in our Back To Back entry featuring the grateful Dead in 1969.  A day after their concert in Santa Barbara, the Dead appeared on Hugh Hefners's Playboy After Dark TV show,  The contrast in styles - the tied dyed San Francisco based band vs Hollywood Hefner in a tux  - couldn't have been more stark. Yet, below the surface, both the Dead and Hefner shared the 60's values of pushing the boundaries. The Dead experimented chemically and musically. taj=king concerts to places never imagined.  Hefner made sexual content mainstream, testing the limits of what pictures and content could be published in Playboy. This soundboard recording captures that legendary appearance, on January 18, 1969, 45 years ago today.  By the way, according to Bill Kreutzman, the Dead’s sound engineer, and resident LSD synthesizer Owsley “Bear” Stanley slipped some of his homemade psychedelic concoction into the Playboy After Dark crew’s coffee supply, effectively dosing the entire staff for the late-night program.

GD 1969 - Back To Back - #1: Every now & then here at So Many Roads, we like to bring you some Grateful Dead, from the 1969, a year in which the dead closed out the "Psychedelic 60's" with live music that embodied everything that nickname symbolized, and then some.  This show from January 17, 1969, 45 years ago today, is one of the precursors to the legendary Fillmore shows in February 1969 that spawned the album Live Dead.  an album that critic Robert Christgau rated an A+, writing that "side two of this four-sided set contains the finest rock improvisation ever recorded, and the rest is gently transcendent as usual. Beautifully recorded, too." The entire Fillmore run was later released as a 10 CD box set entitled Fillmore West 1969: The Complete Recordings.  So this soundboard gives you a good look at a band building toward some of the peak performances of their career! GD 1979 - Back To Back - #2: As promised yesterday, here's the 2nd post  in our Back To Back set featuring the Grateful Dead’s visit to Long Island in the winter of 1979.  This one a soundboard recording from January 11, 1979, a quarter century ago today. As with the show from January 10 posted yesterday, the Dead were in far better form than when I saw them at Madison Square Garden on January 8. By the way, the band played Casey Jones for the encore, a song that would slowly phase out of their set lists over the next 5 years. In fact, the band would eventually go from 1984 to 1992 without playing the tune.

GD 1079 - Back To Back - #1: On December 31, 1978, the Grateful Dead played a legendary show to close Winterland in San Francisco, which has been immortalized with both a CD and DVD release. I actually heard that show as it happened, as it was broadcast live on WNEW-FM in NY. Due to the time difference, I was up until 6 am taping every note. Just 8 days later, on January 8, I was at Madison Square Garden to see the Dead live. Normally, the band wouldn’t head east so soon after New Year’s, but these were make up shows from the fall, when the band had to cancel some dates due to Jerry having laryngitis. Given how well the band had played on New Year's Eve, I was fired up for an extraordinary night. Unfortunately, while the band played well, it wasn’t one of the most memorable shows I attended. Maybe my expectations were too high. Maybe the band was feeling the pressure of making its first appearance at Madison Square Garden (this show and the prior night were the first of over 50 concerts at the World’s Greatest Arena). In any event, I left feeling it was good, but not the ultimate. Just 2 night later, though, on January 10, 1979, 35 years ago today, the band played the show I was hoping for, but of course, I wasn’t in the building. The Dead rocked the Nassau Coliseum that January 10 night with a stellar 2nd set, including outstanding versions of Dark Star and St. Stephen. While no soundboard of the show exists, we do have this excellent audience recording from right in front of the soundboard. Jimi Hendrix - 1969-01-09 - Stockholm, Sweden (early) (SBD) 

Jimi 1969 - Back To Back - #1: In early 1969, Jimi Hendrix, after spending a year based in the US, temporarily moved back to London, where he moved in with girlfriend Kathy Etchingham, living in her rented Brook Street flat. Hendrix and the Experience immediately launched a tour of Scandinavia, Germany, and France. Then in February, they played 2 sold-out concerts at London's Royal Albert Hall on February 18 and February 24, 1969. The 2nd of those 2 shows was posted last year on this blog. No one knew at the time, however, that these would be the last ever European shows for the line-up of Hendrix, Mitch Mitchell on drums and Noel Redding on bass. By June, tensions between Hendrix and Redding would result in the bassist being replaced in the band by Billy Cox. This soundboard recording captures the original Experience during that final tour through Europe, on January 9, 1969, 45 years ago today, in Stockholm. Grateful Dead - 1978-01-06 - San Bernadino CA (SBD)

GD 1978 - Back To Back - #1: In the lore of the Grateful Dead, 1978 has always been a year that receives mixed reviews. As regular readers of this blog know, 1977 was THE YEAR for the Dead with a run of shows that may be unmatched in the band’s history. So, 1978 has always founds itself in the “tough act to follow” position. In truth, the Dead’s playing in 1978 wasn’t quite at the same level as the prior year. For example, their 3 shows at the Pyramids, while historic in terms of the setting, did not feature the band's finest musical moments. Their performance at Winterland on New Year’s Eve, however, is the stuff of legends. My own Dead experiences from 1978 reflect the same dichotomy. On the one hand, I saw them on May 10 and 11 in New Haven and Springfield, 2 shows that were so good they were officially released as Dick’s Picks Volume 25. On the other hand, I attended their September 2 performance at Giants Stadium, the last show before they headed to Egypt, and the band was clearly not firing on all cylinders. That said, when the Dead were good in 1978, they were very good, maybe as good as they were in 1977.  In fact the band opened the year with several strong shows in their home state of California, despite the fact that Garcia was suffering from a terrible sore throat that limited his singing. Today we bring you the first of 3 straight concerts from January 1978, starting with his soundboard recording from January 6, 1978, 3 dozen years ago today, from San Bernadino. Grateful Dead 1970 - Back To Back - #1 - During their career, the Dead became famous for their New Year’s Eve shows, performing on the last day of the year 22 times! Every one of those shows was in the San Francisco/Oakland area, except one, when they played on Boston, on December 31, 1969. Since they were on the East Coast, the Dead decided to kick 1970 off with 2 nights at one of their favorite venues, The Fillmore East.
