October isn't quite over yet (we have 2 posts tomorrow!), but we want to take a moment to discuss our them for November.  We had such a positive response to our October Back to Back theme, that we're going to repeat it in November.  That's right, we'll have Back to Back Months of Back To Back concerts.

Jefferson Airplane -1969-10-25 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)

Our last Back to Back installment for October at So Many Roads features the Jefferson Airplane on their home turf in San Francisco. Billed as “A Weekend At Winterland”, the Airplane, and the Grateful Dead reopened the venue for the fall and winter season, after having closed it for the summer with a show back on May 28. In researching these concerts, I found some confusion over the dates. Posters advertising the shows indicate that the Jefferson Airplane played on October 24 and 25 at Winterland. The Set List program, a web site “deadicated” to the history of Grateful Dead concerts, indicates that the Dead and Airplane also played on October 26. Wolfgang’s vault also mentions 3 nights, thought they only provide concert reviews for 10-25 and 10-26. The recordings we have here for you to download have set lists identical to those provided by Wolfgangs. So, it appears that the Airplance did play 3 nights, but recordings are only available for the the last two. Download this soundboard now of their show from October 25, 1969, 43 years ago today, then come back tomorrow for the next night of their weekend at Winterland.

The Yardbirds. Cream. Blind Faith. Delaney and Bonnie and Friends. Eric Clapton has had historic turns with each of those bands, not to mention an astounding solo career. Yet, no moment in that legacy can top his brief time fronting Derek and the Dominos in 1970. Sure, the band had only 1 album, but it just happened to be one of the finest in rock and roll history. Slowhand, fueled by his unrequited love for Patti Harrison, and driven to play at his best by the presence of Duane Allman, produced his masterpiece, the 2 record set known as Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. After completing the album, the band toured the US from October to December, 1970, then Clapton went into a drug induced exile for almost 3 years. For those of us too young to see the Dominos live, we fortunately have soundboard recordings of both of their October shows at the legendary Fillmore East. Today, I've posted the complete October 23 concert while tomorrow, I'll post October 24. Get them both as it's not often you get to own a piece of history.

The Byrds - 1970-10-23 - Brooklyn, NY (SBD)

In our 3 years here at So Many Roads, we’ve posted 5 shows from The Byrds from 1970. Over the next 2 days, we’ll bring you 2 more! Seems that bootlegs from that year abound, and probably with good reason. The 1970 line up of Roger McGuinn, Clarence White, Skip Battin and Gene Parsons had the longest tenure of any configuration of The Byrds. In addition, they developed a reputation for being a formidable live act, honing their skills by touring relentlessly during a nearly 3 year stretch from September 1969 to July 1972. This soundboard recording captures The Byrds on October 23, 1970, 42 years ago today, in Brooklyn. The show took place at the 46th St. Rock Palace, later renamed Banana Fish Gardens, which would host numerous episodes of Don Kirschner’s Rock Concert TV show, such as the Stephen Stills concert we posted here. In any event, download this one now, then stop by tomorrow for another installment of The Byrds as part of our Back to Back series this month at So Many Roads.

As you can see, it doesn't seem to matter which host I use for download links, somebody always seems to be unhappy.  Unfortunately, ever since Megaupload went down, we really don't have any great alternatives for free download links. I tried using Mediafire for a while, but they eventually deleted my account and took with them hundreds of links.  As such, I've decided to simply use a variety of different hosts, so if one goes down or deletes me, I won't lose all of my uploads. I simply do not have the time to upload shows to multiple hosts.  I'm sorry that not all the links work for everyone, but please remember:

• This is a hobby - not my life - I have a family and a job that come first
• I make no money doing this - its a labor of love
• I share music because I want to, not because I have to

Bob Dylan - 1994-10-19 & 10-20 - New York (SBD)

Welcome to another Back to Back entry here in October, in which we give you 2 days worth of concerts in 1 post!  For 3 days, from October 18 to October 20, 1994, Bob Dylan took up residence at the Roseland Ballroom located on West 52nd Street in New York City’s Theater District. The theater has hosted events ranging from a birthday party for Hillary Clinton to disco dance nights to movie premiers, not to mention concerts from acts as diverse as Phil Collins, Beyonce and Gov’t Mule. Some say the setting inspired Dylan, as his shows at Roseland have been hailed as some of the most powerful of his career. Others feel his performances were propelled by the magic from sitting in with the Grateful Dead the night before his stint at Roseland. Whatever the reason, Bob Dylan regained his rightful place at the head of the pantheon of rock and roll during those 3 magic nights. Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth was in the audience for the last night and wrote the following: “I don’t know what/whose show you saw last week, but what I saw was the best show I’ve seen Dylan do in maybe 15 years, a master at the height of his powers, singing (singing real good!), playing just incredibly, with a crack band supporting him (finally!), playing songs from every period of his lengthy career and just doing everything right”. This soundboard recording captures the last 2 nights of his run at Roseland, on October 19 and 20, 1994, 18 years ago today and tomorrow. This soundboard recording from October 18, 1981, 31 years ago today, features the exact same set list as the previous night. Which of the 2 nights featured a better performance? Download them both and decide for yourself. Be assured, both are far superior to the Still Life album. Moreover, both soundboards demonstrate that record companies still don’t understand that most live albums, with songs drawn from multiple shows, extra slick production, and numerous over dubs, are a poor substitute for a simply releasing a show in its entirety. Fans want to hear what really happened live, not the record company’s interpretation of a concert. Until the record industry figures that out and changes how they deal with live recordings, folks will always seek out bootlegs recordings.

Welcome to another installment of our October “Back to Back” theme here at So Many Roads. Today and tomorrow’s post feature the Rolling Stones during their 1981 US tour. High quality bootlegs from this tour abound as the Stones taped almost every show to amass material for both a live album release and a concert film. The live disc, entitled Still Life, went to #5 on the Billboard charts in 1982, but critics panned it for its overly slick production that seemed to hide all the rough edges that are essential to a live Stone’s performance. Fortunately, this soundboard recording from October 17, 1981, 31 years ago today, presents the band exactly as they sounded that night in San Francisco, with no artificial overdubs. Elton John - 2009-10-15 - Dusseldorf, Germany (SBD)

In February 2004, Elton John took up residence at the Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas for a nightly show entitled The Red Piano. Elton originally was slated to perform 25 shows a year at Caesar’s over 3 years, but wound up doing over 40 shows annually from 2004 through 2008, before ending the run with around 20 Las Vegas performances in 2009. The set list each night was the same, a run of 15 of Elton’s greatest hits such as Your Song, Bennie and The Jets, Rocket Man and Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting. The Red Piano proved so successful in Las Vegas, that Elton took the show to Europe for short runs in both 2008 and 2009. This soundboard recording captures Elton performing a slightly expanded Red Piano set in Dusseldorf on October 15, 2009, just 3 years ago today. Welcome to part 2 of our Back to Back installment of Sting shows in South America in 1990. After playing the first Amnesty International show in Uruguay on October 10, Sting performed a second concert on behalf of that organization in Chile on October 13, 1990, 22 years ago today. Just months prior to this show, the 17 year long dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet had been replaced by civilian rule. Pinochet's regime had been characterized by systematic suppression of political parties and the persecution of thousands of dissidents. In fact, the very stadium where Sting performed had once been used as detention camp by the Pinochet government. The concert transformed the venue into place of hope for a future free of oppression. In addition to a collection of Police tunes and solo hits, Sting played They Dance Alone, dedicated to the victims of Chile’s authoritarian rule in the 1980s, and Get Up, Stand Up, the Bob Marley anthem of perseverance against oppression. After a day off, EC took the stage on October 5, 1990, 22 years ago today, in Buenos Aires for night 3 of his South American tour. This show was part of the Derby Rock Festival, which had started a few days earlier with performances by David Bowie and Bryan Adams, as well as numerous local acts. On this night, EC was preceded on stage by local musician Juan Antonio Ferreira and former Rolling Stones guitarist, Mick Taylor. Eric Clapton - 1990-10-03 - Montevideo, Uruguay (SBD)

In late 1989, Eric Clapton released Journeyman, his 11th solo album and first disc of new material since August in 1986. The album was also Eric’s first since kicking his addiction to alcohol. The disc rose to number 16 on the billboard album charts, and produced 2 singles, Pretending and Bad Love, which made Billboard’s Top 100 and also climbed to #1 on their mainstream rock chart. Bad Love also garnered Clapton a Grammy for best male Rock Vocal Performance. Journeyman also included such notable tracks as Running On Faith, No Alibis and Before You Accuse Me. Rolling Stone gave the album a 4 star review, calling it his most satisfying disc since 461 Ocean Boulevard. Bruce Springsteen - 2009-10-02 - East Rutherford, NJ (SBD)

When Bruce Springsteen brought his Working On A Dream tour to Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ for 4 shows in October 2009, fans felt a mixture of excitement and sadness. Of course any concert on Bruce’s home turf raised the emotional stakes, but these shows had special meaning for his audience. On the one hand, each show would feature an entire album played in its entirety, a rare and treat. On the other hand, the 5 concerts would be the last that Springsteen would play in Giants Stadium, as the building would be demolished in 2010 to make way for Met Life Stadium. Springsteen played 25 shows at Giants Stadium between 1985 and 2009, more than any other artist, including a 10 night run in July and August 2003. His October 9 show on this stand would be the last concert ever played in the venue. Springsteen wrote a new song to commemorate the venue, entitled Wrecking Ball. Wrecking Ball would open all 5 shows on this run, and would go on to become the title track for Bruce’s 2012 album release. This soundboard recording captures Bruce on October 2, 2009, 3 years ago today, on night 1 at Giants Stadium, and features Darkness of The Edge of Town, only the 2nd time the album had been played live in it entirety.
