Hiatt 1990 - Back To Back - #1:As mentioned in other posts on this blog, I think John Hiatt is one of rock’s most under rated and overlooked talents. His run of albums between 1987 and 1995 - Bring The Family, Slow Turning, Stolen Moments, Perfectly Good Guitar and Walk On - are filled with exceptional tunes. Many of those songs have been covered by artists such as Bob Dylan, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Willie Nelson, Jimmy Buffet and Joe Cocker. Unfortunately, Hiatt never achieved the commercial success he deserved.  This sounsboard recording captures him on tour in support of Stolent Moments, during the late show at the Bottom Line on July 26, 1990, 3 dozen years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this Back To Back set.

After not seeing a concert for over 2 years, from July 2019 to August 2021, due to the pandemic, the first show I attended as concert halls re-opneed was John Hiatt on Septrmber 25, 2021 in Morristown. That was 34 years after the first tine I saw Hiatt, in August 1987 at the Pier in New York City. That gap is the 3rd longest time for me betwen seeing an artist live, behind America (38 years bewteen 1978 and 2016) and Pat Benatar (40 years between 1981 and 2021).

This ALD recording captures Mr. Hiatt, backed by the North Mississippi Allstars in Virginia on June 28, 2005, 21 years ago today.  He was on tour in support of his 17th studio album, Master Of Disatser, which had been released just 7 days earlier.

Today's post features 3 artists, all of whom I've seen live.  John Hiatt was the first show I attended after a 2 year hiatus due to the pandemic, on September 25, 2021 in Morristown. That was 34 years after the first tine I saw Hiatt, in August 1987 at the Pier in New York City. They led-in for Tom Petty.

This TV soundboard recording captures Hiatt, Lowe and Carrack in Hamburg on the German televison program Rockpalast on December 11, 1983, 42 years ago today.  Four years later, Lowe would help Hiatt record his breakthrough album, Bring The Family.

That disc featured such memorable tunes as the title track, Tennessee Plates, Drive South, and It Feels Like Rain. In fact, the album enjoyed even more commercial success than Bring The Family! 1990s - #1: On September 22, 1985, Neil Young, Willie Nelson & John Mellencamp, inspired by Bob Dylan's pleas at Live Aid to help the family farmer in America, launched Farm Aid intending to do just that! That firs concert, which was held at the University of Illinois, attracted 80,000 fans and raised over $9 million. Over the past 4 decades, the effort has raised well over $75 million to help America's family farms while also serving a a key organization to raise awareness of the importance and plight of those farmers. This FM and TV SBD recording captures highlights from Farm Aid 1990, held in Indianapolis on April 7, 1990, 35 years ago today. The line up is filled with rock and roll hall of famers, imcluding the 3 founders!

1980s - #1: In August 1988, John Hiatt released the album Slow Turning, his follow up to his 1987 breakout album, Bring The Family. Hiatt is backed on the album by the Goners: Sonny Landreth on guitar, Dave Ranson on bass and Kenneth Blevins on drums. The album contains some of Hiatt’s best know tunes, including Drive South, Tennessee Plates, Feels Like Rain and the title track. The single Slow Turning received significant airplay and has several notable lines. The chorus of “not fade way’ echoes the Buddy Holly song of the same name, while the line “never did get what I wanted but now I get what I need” is reminiscent of a line from the Stone’s You Can’t Always get What You Want. Speaking of the Stones, Slow Turning also features the lyric “I'm yelling at the kids in the back, 'cause they're banging like Charlie Watts”. I’ve said it in other posts but it’s worth repeating here – John Hiatt is a vastly under rated singer/songwriter. This FM broadcast captures Hiatt in Boston on October 10, 1988, 3 dozen years ago today, on tour in support of Slow Turning.  NOTE - while the source says FM, its a bit muted so its possible it could be an audience recording.

On May 29, 1987, John Hiatt released the album Bring The Family, and quickly became an “overnight sensation”. Of course, earning that label was 13 years and 7 prior albums in the making. In fact, when Hiatt recorded Bring The Family, he was actually on the verge of quitting the business, having recently been dropped by his record label. Hiatt, with encouragement from John Chelew of McCabe's Guitar Shop who had heard some of the early versions of tunes that wound up on the album, decided to take one more crack at recording. Demon Records in the UK put up about $30,000 to help Hiatt record an album. Then old friends, Nick Lowe, Ry Cooder and Jim Keltner joined Hiatt in the studio. Due to budget constraints, the entire record had to be recorded in just 4 days. Hiatt and Lowe actually shared a hotel room at a local Holiday Inn to save money (Lowe, by the way, took no payment for his contribution). The result - Bring The Family became one of the cornerstones of Hiatt’s career, featuring songs such as Memphis in the Meantime, Thing Called Love, Lipstick Sunset Have a Little Faith in Me, Thank You Girl and Learning How to Love You. This excellent audience recording captures Hiatt on tour in support of Bring The Family, in San Diego, on September 21, 1987, 37 year ago this very day.

1990s - #3: When John Hiatt recorded his breakthrough album Bring The Family in 1987, he did it in just 4 days week with the help of Ry Cooder, Nick Lowe and Jim Keltner. In 1992, the four reunited to record an album, calling themselves Little Village. Despite the star power, their self titled album met with little commercial or critical success. As Nick Lowe later said "Little Village was really good fun. Unfortunately, the record we did was no good. I suppose on some level, it worked, but Warner Brothers kind of gave us too much time to do it", referencing how the compressed time frame for Bring The Family had forced the foursome to be at their best! In any event, Little Village went on tour in support of the album in early 1992. This soundboard recording captures them on April 12 1992, 32 years ago today, in Detroit.

This FM broadcast catches John Hiatt at WBCN studios in Boston on Stepber 13, 1988, 35 years ago today, promoting his upcoming October east coast tour. Hiatt was at the peak of his success in 1988, having released the album Slow Turing that year, following on the heels of his 1987 breakthrough disc, Bring The Family. Despite the critical acclaim, Hiatt could not generate the fan support to sell out larger arenas. He continued to play small clubs, such as The Paradis in Boston, where he'd play on October 4, and the Bottom Line in New York, where he would perform on October 7.  To be honest, those clubs better suited his musical style, though the result is he never achieved the commercial sucess he deserved.

John Hiatt - 1993-06-26- Chicago IL (FM)

After not seeing a concert for over 2 years, from July 2019 to August 2021, due to the pandemic, the first show I attended as concert halls re-opneed was John Hiatt on September 25, 2021 in Morristown. That was 34 years after the first tine I sw Hiatt, in August 1987 at the Pier in New York City. That gap is the 3rd longest time for me between seeing an artist, behind America (38 years between 1978 and 2016) and Pat Benatar (40 years between 1981 and 2021). 

If you've been a regular visitor to So Many Roads, you'll know that I'm a big fan of John Hiatt. While his 1987 and 1988 albums Bring The Family and Slow Turning are his best known, His album, Perfectly Good Guitar,  released in September 1993, however, may just be my favorite. Almost every one of the album's 12 tracks is worth playing again and again, with the title tune, Cross My Fingers, Straight Outta Time, Loving A Hurricane, and Buffalo River Home being true standouts. In fact, that last tune, with its catchy tune playing counterpoint to its saddening lyrics, just may be Hiatt's best. This FM broadcast captures Hiatt about 3 months before the release of Perfectly Good Guitar, in Chicago on June 26, 1993, 3 decades ago ago today. Hiatt gives everyone a sneak peak of his fpthcoming disc, plating the title track to finish the set.
