The Ramones - 1978-01-31 - San Francisco, CA (FM)

Although they were the leaders of the NY punk scene, the Ramones were often criticized for “knowing only 3 chords and having every song sound the same." Those critics missed the point – The Ramones marked a return to a more pure brand of rock and roll, stripping away all the excess that had plagued the rock scene in the mid 1970s. This FM broadcast, from January 31, 1978, 38 years ago today, captures the band at the Old Waldorf in San Francisco, an opportunity for the West Coast to learn what the East Side of New York already knew.  The band roared through 26 songs in just under an 1 hour, a blistering pace that demonstrated why The Ramones were the masters of the 2-minute song! By the way - this post is the perfect transition from our January theme of California Dreaming to our February theme of The 1970s.

John Hiatt - 1987-01-30 - Santa Monica, CA (SBD)

Muck like Robert Cray, who we posted earlier this month, John Hiatt became an "overnight sensation" in 1987 when he released the album Bring The Family on May 29 of that year. Of course, earning that label was 13 years and 7 prior albums in the making. In fact, when Hiatt recorded Bring The Family, he was actually on the verge of quitting the business, having recently been dropped by his record label. Hiatt, with encouragement from John Chelew of McCabe's Guitar Shop who had heard some of the early versions of tunes that wound up on the album, decided to take one more crack at recording. Demon Records in the UK put up about $30,000 to help Hiatt record an album. Then old friends, Nick Lowe, Ry Cooder and Jim Keltner joined Hiatt in the studio. Due to budget constraints, the entire record had to be recorded in just 4 days. Hiatt and Lowe actually shared a hotel room at a local Holiday Inn to save money (Lowe, by the way, took no payment for his contribution). The result - Bring The Family became one of the cornerstones of Hiatt’s career, featuring songs such as Memphis in the Meantime, Thing Called Love, Lipstick Sunset Have a Little Faith in Me, Thank You Girl and Learning How to Love You. This soundboard recording captures Hiatt at the aforementioned McCabe's, just a few months before the release of Bring The Family, on January 30, 1987, 29 years ago today.  One historical note - incredibly, i saw both "overnight sensations", Cray and Hiatt, on the same night in their break out year of 1987 as a double bill at Pier 84 in New York on August 29.

Grateful Dead - 1987-01-28 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)

For the Grateful Dead, 1987 was a year in which the band rose from ashes. In the summer of 1986, Jerry Garcia fell into a diabetic coma, and for a while, it appeared he might not survive. When he did emerge from the coma, he had to re-learn how to play guitar. As the Dead song says " I need a miracle, every day" and Jerry got more than his share. By December 1986, Garcia was back where he belonged, on stage with the Grateful Dead for a series of 6 shows in Oakland, including the band's traditional New Year's Eve bash. A month later, the band kicked off its 1987 tour, 29 years ago today on January 28, at the Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. Who knew at the time it would be the start of one of the band's greatest years. By spring of 1987, the song Touch of Grey, with its refrain of "I will get by, I will survive" echoing Garcia's recovery and rebirth, became the band's first and only top 10 hit. By the way, only the Dead could write a song in 1982, perform it countless times in concert, then wait 5 years to release it as a single! The video for Touch of Grey, which was recorded in May (more on that in another post), and featured skeleton puppets of the band playing the song, received major airplay on MTV. In July, the band released In The Dark, their first studio album in 7 years, which also climbed into the top 10. The summer featured a tour with Bob Dylan, with the band playing 2 sets of their own music, then backing Dylan on his tunes for the closing set. The fall tour featured some of the band's finest playing in years, as evidenced in my first post on this blog, the September 18, 1987 show at Madison Square Garden. The year ended with an amazing New Year's show with special guests the Neville Brothers. Stop back tomorrow and the next 2 for two more from the run that kicked off this amazing year.

Jerry Garcia Band - 1976-01-27 - Berkeley CA (SBD)

Here's another one from Jerry from his favorite venue, the Keystone in Berkeley. This soundboard recording captures Jerry on January 27, 1976, 4 decades ago this very day, during the Dead's hiatus from touring. Less than 6 months later, that hiatus would end, as the Dead resumed touring on June 3, and wouldn't stop until Jerry's passing in 1995.  And while the remaining members of the Dead have toured on and off in all sorts of configurations over the last 3 decades, including the Fare Thee Well shows this past summer, playing wonderful music in the process, its just not the Grateful Dead without Jerry.

In January 1980, Van Morrison arrived in San Francisco to play 5 shows. Van hadn’t been on the road since October 1979, and wouldn’t launch a full tour until June 1980. The 5 shows featured music from his previous 2 albums, Wavelength and into The Music, but also served to test out tunes from his forthcoming disc, Common One. For example, this FM broadcast of Van’s show from The Warfield in San Francisco on January 25, 1980, 3 dozen years ago today, includes two songs from Common One, Spirit and Haunts of Ancient Peace, to end the show. Download this one to hear a preview of an album which would be one of the most experimental of his long storied career.

Allman Brothers Band - 1970-01-24 - Los Angeles, CA (SBD)

When the Allman Brothers took the stage at the Whiskey-A-Go Go on January 24, 1970, 46 years ago today, it was the 3rd of 4 shows at the legendary venue.  At the time, the band was just about 1/2 way between 2 milestones in their career. The first official Allman Brothers band concert took place on March 30, 1969 in Jacksonville, FL. In March, 1971, the Allmans played 2 shows that were recorded for what became one of rock's most legendary live albums, entitle simply At Fillmore East. So this February performance finds the band on the rise to stardom, having just released their debut album about 2 month's earlier, in November 1969.

The Youngbloods - 1971-01-22 (or 23) - San Rafael, CA (FM)

Led by Jesse Colin Young, The Yougbloods emerged from the Greenwich Village folk scene of the 1960s. They played their heir first concert at Gerde's Folk City in Greenwich Village and sonn after became the house band at the Cafe Au Go Go.  They scored their biggest hit in 1969 when the single Get Together climbed into the top 5 on the Billboard charts. The song had been originally released in 1967 and scored modest success, but 2 years later, after the tune was used in a brotherhood promotion by WABC-AM, one of the foremost AM stations of the time, it was re-released and sold over 1 million copies.  This FM Broadcast captures The Youngbloods 2 years later, in San Rafael on January 22 (oe 23), 1971, 45 years ago today.

David Crosby with Phil Lesh - 1997-01-21 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)

In late 1996, David Crosby formed CPR, a new band that included Jeff Pevar on guitar and James Raymond, Crosby's son, on piano. The first song that father and son co-wrote was entitled Morrison, which expressed Crosby's feelings about the portrayal of Jim Morrison in the movie The Doors. The trio went on tour in January 1997, and Morrison was included in the band's set list. When CPR performed at San Francisco's maritime Hall on January 21, 1997, 19 years ago today, they were joined by former Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh. Bobby Darin - 1973-01-19 - Burbank, CA (TV SBD)

In the summer, of 1972, Bobby Darin hosted a variety show on NBC that turned out to be a surprise hit for the network,  The show was brought back in January 1973 as a mid-season replacement and ran until April.  What no one knew at the time, however, was that the show would be Darin's swan song.  The incomparable singer would die on December 20, 1973, after 5 hours of open heart surgery failed to repair his already damaged heart, which had suffered a fatal infection when Darin failed to take medications designed to protect his heart prior to a dentist visit earlier that month. He was only 37 years old.  In 1990, Darin was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  Nine years later, he was voted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. This TV Soundboard recording captures him on January 19, 1973, 43 years ago today, during the first episode of the winter run of his variety show. Linda Ronstadt - 1974-01-18 - Berkeley, CA (FM)

Berkeley has long had the reputation of being one of the most liberal cities in the US.  In the politically charged time of the late 1960s and early 1970s, the city was also a hotbed for rock music, with the Berkeley Community Theater hosting some of the biggest acts in the business. Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, The Byrds, Grateful Dead, Van Morrison, Stephen Stills and Led Zeppelin all played the venue, just to name a few. On January 18, 1974, 42 years ago today, Linda Ronstadt played the BCT, serving as the lead-in for Jackson Browne.  Ronstadt was on tour in support of her album Don't Cry Now,which had been released in September 1973. Don't Cry Now became Ronstadt's second Gold album and would be followed in late 1974 by her masterpiece, Heart Like a Wheel.

On July 16, 2013, The Eagles launched their History of The Eagles tour, in conjunction with the release of the documentary film with the same name.  The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, aired on Showtime and was later released on DVD.  The tour ran for over 2 years, featuring 142 shows on 3 continents.  This high quality audience recording captures The Eagles during that tour in their home state of California on January 16, 2014. just 2 years ago today.

Neil Young - 1993-01-15 - Burbank, CA (SBD)

After a series of hard rocking albums with Crazy Horse in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Neil Young returned to his acoustic roots with 1992’s disc, Harvest Moon. The album was Neil’s 20th studio disc, and in name, tone, and supporting cast, harkened back to his landmark recording Harvest, released 2 decades prior. Ben Keith, Tim Drummond and Kenny Buttrey backed Neil on Harvest Moon, just as they had on Harvest. Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor made guest appearances on the 1992 disc, just as they had on its 1972 predecessor. Interestingly, 3 folks who played on Harvest that did not appear on Harvest Moon were Neil’s sometime band mates, Crosby, Stills and Nash. In any event, Harvest Moon climbed to #16 on the Billboard charts, and received a four star review from Rolling Stone. AllMusic wrote that the title track was “positively gorgeous". In addition, Classic Rock Review named Harvest Moon its album of the year for 1992. This soundboard recording captures Neil in the Tonight Show, in Burbank CA, playing 2 cuts from that album, on January 15, 1993, 23  years ago today.

In 1984, Los Lobos made their major record label debut with the album How Will The Wolf Survive. While the disc did not  achieve significant commercial success,  critics loved it.  For example, Robert Christgau wrote that the album "makes it sound as if they invented the style. Who did the original of that one, you wonder, only to discover that you're listening to the original." This soundboard recording captures the band right before the release of the disc, in Santa Barbara,  on January 14, 1984, 32 years ago today.  A glance at the set list, by the way, reveals 2 tunes that were critical to the band's commercial breakthrough in 1987 - a cover of La Bamba and the original tune, My Baby's Gone, which would appear on their landmark 2nd disc, By The Light Of The Moon.

Grateful Dead - 1980-01-13 - Oakland CA (SBD)

In 1980, the Grateful Dead didn't launch their spring tour until March, but they did play one show early in the year in their home state of California. On January 13, 1980, 3 dozen years ago today, The Dead headlined a benefit for refugees of war torn Kampuchea (Cambodia).  This show followed right of the heals of the London Concerts for Kampuchea held in December 1979, but didn't receive quite as much attention. Also on the bill were  Jefferson Starship, Joan Baez; the Beach Boys and Santana.  This soundboard recording capture's the Dead's set from that night, as well as the finale featuring all of the artists who performed that night!

Cream - 1993-01-12 - Los Angeles, CA (SBD)

On January 12, 1993, 23 years ago today, at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles, Cream was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. When Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce took the stage that night, it marked the first time in 25 years that they had played together in front of a live audience. For a few moments, all the tensions and anger that had ripped the band apart were forgotten, as Cream demonstrated why they were part of rock royalty, playing 3 of their classic tunes -- Sunshine of Your Love, Born Under A Bad Sign, and Crossroads. The band had rehearsed for their induction the previous day at the Power Plant Studios in LA. They had been wary about performing, but once they began to rehearse, it was as if they had never been apart. Of course, despite how well the 2 days went, it would be another 12 years before Cream again played together on stage! This soundboard recording captures the induction ceremony as well as the entire rehearsal session. Download this one to capture one of rock’s historic moments!

Requests To Repost Dead Links - A Clarification

Over the years, I've done by best to re-post dead links when asked. However, in recent weeks, it has simply gotten out of hand.  I have several folks asking me to re-post every dead link for a particular band, or leaving 30 comments in a row, all requesting re-posts.

While I appreciate folks wanting the music,  I simply do not have the time to deal with that volume of requests. If I tried to, I'd never have a chance to post anything new. let alone manage my job, family, etc.

So, if there's a show or two you'd like me to re-post, I'll do my best to get to it.,  But if you simply are asking me to re-post every dead link on the blog, well, that's something I simply won't be able to do. I know that may be disappointing, but its the reality of the situation as there's simply not enough hours in the day to get to everything.

Thanks for understanding.  

In Memory of David Bowie

The rock world lost a legend last night as David Bowie lost his battle with cancer.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

According to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the 1960's produced "five mighty pop divas – Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross, Martha Reeves and Dusty Springfield". Springfield was a legendary singer, her sensual blue eyed soul style making her one of the most successful female pop singers in history,  She scored 6 top 20 singles in the US, including ushc legendary tunes as Son Of A Preacher Man, The Look Of Love, You Don't Have To Say You Love Me.  I Only Want To Be With You and Wishin' & Hopin'. She was inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame in 1999, just 2 weeks after her death form cancer.  Elton John inducted her, summing up her legendary voice and career by declaring "I'm biased but I just think she was the greatest white singer there ever has been ... Every song she sang, she claimed as her own."  Dusty and Elton had been long time friends, and she had contributed backing vocals ton the album Tumbleweed Connection and the single The Bitch Is Back. During her career, Dusty had also worked with songwriters such as Carol King, Hal David and Burt Bacharach.  This soundboard recording captures her on an episode of Hollywood Place hited by Bacharach, on January 10, 1970, 46 years ago today.  Live recordings of Dusty are scarce, so this one is a must have for your collection.

Requests To Repost Dead Links

As this blog is nearing 6 years old, visitors may encounter links that have expired or are no longer working.

Have no fear.

If you come across a link that is dead, all you need to do leave a comment under that post. I check comments daily and will re-load the link within 48 to 72 hours, unless I'm away on business. Of course, I tend to work faster when the request is a polite one!

How We Choose What We Post At So Many Roads

Over the 6 plus years we've running So Many Roads,, I’ve gotten numerous questions on how we choose what to post. I’ve also gotten several requests for certain bands or types of music. Given all that, I thought I’d take a minute to explain how we decide on what to post. I consider 3 things in deciding what bands/concerts to post at So Many Roads:

1. Sound Quality: Basically, no show gets posted unless the sound quality is top notch. Over 90% of what we post at So Many Roads are soundboard or FM broadcasts. When I first started this site 6 years ago, I took the advice of Tunzmaster Dino, from the legendary D&P’s Bootleg Tunzworld, that no one wants to hear a show that sounds like it was recorded in your bathroom with the water running.  Sound quality is king. While we have increased the number of audience recordings over the years, we do our best to make sure they sound great. Occasionally, maybe 1 or 2% of the time, we’ll post a less than great sounding show for historical or sentimental reasons, but 9 out of 10 times, if not more, we’re bringing you a soundboard or broadcast quality show.


2. The Date: Given that this blog has evolved to feature a this date in history” approach, the show we post each day has to be from that day! So, if its November 22, then we’ll find a concert from November 22 from some year between 1955 and today. When you see posts such as Concerts From Today in history or some other type of announcement, it means I couldn’t find a show from that day that I felt was worth posting.


3. My Taste In Music: In the end, I post shows that feature music I enjoy. You see lots of shows at So Many Roads from the Grateful Dead, The Beatles, CSNY, Eric Clapton the Allman Brothers, etc. because that’s what I listen to every day. I’m not a fan of heavy metal, grunge or progressive rock, so you don’t see any posts from bands that play those styles of music. I like the blues, but in small doses, which is why you only get occasional posts from artists such as Muddy Waters, Robert Cray or Stevie Ray Vaughn. I’m into live music, not studio outtakes, so you’ll see very few of the latter type of posts here at So Many Roads. I know that my musical tastes may differ from others, which is why I link to sites such as JustDave’s Place, where you can often find music I may not post. By the way, the number of times I post a band ousually reflects how much I enjoy their music but not always. You’d see far more Beatles posts, for example, but unfortunately, there are far too few high quality concert recordings available. Same goes for The Band from the Robbie Robertson era, Rockpile and Derek & The Dominos, just to name a few.
