I got to see one half of the original Rascals - Felix Cavaliere & Gene Cornish - in Morristown, NJ on November 16, 2022. I also saw Felix on October 31, 1986, at Madison Square Garden as a special guest sitting in with the Allman Brothers.

This soundboard recording captures The rascals atthe height of their fame, in Honolulu, on June 29, 1969, 57 years ago today.  Around that time, the Woodtsock organzers offered them a headling spot of the festival, but they turned it down because they were in the middle of recording a new album!

WCBS-FM 25th Anniversary Concert - 1997-04-26 - Radio City, NY, NY (FM)

In July 1972, WCBS-FM in New York abandoned its rock and roll format having lost the ratings war with WNEW-FM and WPLJ-FM, and became one of the first stations in the US to adopt an "oldies" format.  That change proved to be ratings magic, and WCBS became one of the highest rated stations in New York for the next quarter century. WCBS celebrated 25 years as an oldies station with a concert, at Radio City Music Hall on April 26, 1997, 29 years ago today, with a concert that featured 5 performers who would all be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame:

• Felix Cavaliere: Inducted just a few days after this concert as a member of The Rascals, who put aside years of differences to perform People Got To Be Free.  Other members of the class of 1997 included Buffalo Springfield, CSN, and Joni Mitchell.
• Ronnie Spector: Inducted in 2007 as a member of the Ronettes.  Other artists inducted that year included R.E.M, Patti Smith and Van Halen.
• Little Anthony & The Imperials: Inducted in 2009, alongside Jeff Beck, Metallica, and Run DMC, just to name a few.
• Dion Dimucci: Inducted in 1989, along with the Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding, and The Temptations.
• Frankie Valli: Inducted in 1990 as a member of the Four Seasons, along with The Who, Bobby Darin, The Four Tops, The Kinks, The Platters, Simon & Garfunkel, and Louis Armstrong, just to name a few. For the ceremony, the original lineup of the Four Seasons reunited for the first time since the mid-1960s and sang together for what would be the last time.  

The whole show, of course, was broadcast live on WCBS-FM! By the way, with the exception of a 2 years stint from 2005 to 2007 where the station featured the ill fated JACK-FM concept, the station has stayed true to its oldies format (though the songs now are more 1970s,1980s and 1990s than 1950s and 1960s) and continues to be one of the most listened to stations in the New York area.

1997 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 1997-05-06 - Cleveland OH (TV SBD)

1990s - #1: The 1997 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction ceremony took place in the very city where the museum is located, Cleveland. Stephen Still became the first person ever inducted twice in one night, when both CSN and Buffalo Springfield entered the hall. Neil Young skipped the event, annoyed by both the ticket prices and the fact it was televised. Michael Jackson joined his brothers on stage for the induction of the Jackson 5, but did not perform. Perhaps the highlight of the night was that the The Rascals reunited, putting aside years of infighting, to accept their induction and perform People Got To Be Free.

The 2010s - #3: In the early 1960s, three quarters of this band originally played with Joey Dee and the Starlighters. When Felix Cavaliere, Eddie Brigati and Gene Cornish went out on their own, adding drummer Dino Danelli from Garfield, NJ, the same town Brigati was from, they became the Young Rascals. Eventually shortened to just The Rascals, the band ran off a string of top 10 hits in the late 1960s, including 3 #1 tunes in Good Lovin, Groovin' and People Got To Be Free. It ended all too quickly, with the band coming apart as the decade came to an end. In fact, with the exception of a short set played at their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, the last time the original Rascals played a full concert was in 1970. Then after 4 decades apart, the band reunited on April 24, 2010, at Robert De Niro’s Tribeca Grill, for a charity event for the Kristen Ann Carr Fund, where Steve Van Zandt and his wife, Maureen, were also being honored. When asked why they got back together for this event, Rascals guitarist Gene Cornish said: “I speak on behalf of the band when I say all the money offers in the world could not entice the Rascals to reunite, but four phone calls from Stevie and without hesitation we enthusiastically and immediately agreed to both support this wonderful cause and honor Stevie and Maureen.”.  The association with Steve and Maureen Van Zandt eventually led to another reunion in 2012. Miami Steve and his wife produced The Rascals: Once Upon a Dream, a Broadway show featuring the band performing their tunes set against a backdrop of the history of the group and the 1960s, featuring interviews with the four Rascals, filmed scenes of actors enacting out key moments in the band's history, news footage, and archival footage of the band. The show was such a success that the Rascals took it off Broadway and around the country. This high quality audience recording captures The Rascals during that tour on October 10, 2013, 11 years ago today, in Los Angeles.

Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary - 1988-05-14 - New York, NY (FM)

On May 14, 1988, 33 years ago today, Atlantic Records held a massive concert at Madison Square Garden in New York celebrating the label's 40th Anniversary. Running nearly 13 hours in length, the concert featured an amazing line up of performers from the label's roster, running the gamut from Ben E King to Debbie Gibson to The Coasters to CSN to Yes. Plant performed a short solo set during the concert, then came back out for A Led Zeppelin reunion to close the show.  While The 3 surviving members of Led Zep usually avoided such reunions, (the only other time they had played together since they disbanded in the wake of John Bonham's death was at Live Aid in 1985), but they felt such an incredible sense of gratitude to former Atlantic Records president Ahmet Ertegun .that when he asked them to asked them to play at the anniversary concert they couldn't say no. This soundboard recording captures that historic concert in its entirety, including Plant's solo set and the Led Zep finale.

La Bamba's Christmas Show - 1985-12-22 - Passaic, NJ (FM)

Thirty five years ago today, on December 22, 1985, La Bamba & The Hubcaps hosted their 3rd Annual Christmas show at the Capitol Theater in Passaic, NJ. The event was a fund raiser for the Foundation To Find & Protect America's Children. La Bamba was actually Richie Rosenberg, a trombonist who had played with Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes. Through originally from Philadelphia, Rosenburg relocated to the Jersey Shore once he became part of the Jukes. Several of Rosenburg’s friends showed up to help him celebrate Christmas 1985, including Gary US Bonds, Marshall Crenshaw, Gene Cornish of the Rascals, and David Johansen, as his alter ego Buster Poindexter! Woodstock organizers invited The Rascals to play the festival and were even offered the group a headlining spot. The band refused, however,  due to the fact that they were in the middle of recording a new album.

This FM Broadcast captures The Rascals in New York City, on August 29, 1988, 19 years after Woodstock and 31 years ago today. That year, 3 of the 4 original Rascals - Felix Cavaliere, Dino Danelli and Gene Cornish  - staged a brief reunion tour. Eddie Brigati was not part of tat tour, kept away by his tense relationship with Cavaliere.  You can find a fascinating article on that 1988 tour here. The duo would finally bury the hatchet in 2013, with a little help from Steve Van Zandt, reuniting the original foursome for the Broadway musical, The Rascals: Once Upon a Dream, More on that Broadway show here.

Felix Cavaliere - 1993-07-29 - Brooklyn NY (SBD)

Look at the list of concerts that I've attended which is posted on this blog, and you won't see Felix Cavaliere's name anywhere.  That's because he was a surprise, special guest at the October 1986 Crackdown on Crack Concert at Madison Square Garden.  Felix joined the Allman Brothers on stage for a very appropriate rendition of Good Lovin'!

After The Rascals disbanded in 1972, Felix Cavaliere, who sang lead vocals on some of their biggest hits, including Good Lovin', Groovin', A Girl Like You, A Beautiful Morning, and People Got to Be Free, launched his solo career. Although he released 4 albums between 1974 and 1979, none achieved the level of success he had attained with the Rascals. Almost 15 years passed before Cavaliere recorded another album, the 1994 release Dreams In Motion which included the tune Big Surprise, on which his 3 daughters, Christina, Laura and Aria sing backup. While the album was not a huge hit, it did mark the start of a brief comeback for Cavaliere. In 1995, he toured with Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band, while in 1997 he and his fellow Rascals were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This soundboard recording captures Felix right before the release of Dreams In Motion on July 29, 1993, 23 years ago today, in Brooklyn NY. In the early 1960s, three quarters of this band originally played with Joey Dee and the Starlighters. When Felix Cavaliere, Eddie Brigati and Gene Cornish went out on their own, adding drummer Dino Danelli from Garfield , NJ, the same town Brigati was from, they became the Young Rascals. Eventually shortened to just The Rascals, the band ran off a string of top 10 hits in the late 1960s, including 3 number 1 tunes in Good Lovin, Groovin' and People Got To Be Free. It ended all too quickly, with the band coming apart as the decade came to an end. In fact, with the exception of a short set played at their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, the last time the original Rascals played a full concert was in 1970. Then after 4 decades apart, the band reunited on April 24, 2010, at Robert De Niro’s Tribeca Grill, for a charity event for the Kristen Ann Carr Fund, where Steve Van Zandt and his wife, Maureen, were also being honored. When asked why they got back together for this event, Rascals guitarist Gene Cornish said: “I speak on behalf of the band when I say all the money offers in the world could not entice the Rascals to reunite, but four phone calls from Stevie and without hesitation we enthusiastically and immediately agreed to both support this wonderful cause and honor Stevie and Maureen.”. By the way, the association with Steve and Maureen Van Zandt eventually led to another reunion in 2012. Miami Steve and his wife produced The Rascals: Once Upon a Dream, a Broadway show featuring the band performing their tunes set against a backdrop of the history of the group and the 1960s, featuring interviews with the four Rascals, filmed scenes of actors enacting out key moments in the band's history, news footage, and archival footage of the band. The sow was such a success that the Rascals took it off Broadway and around the country. This high quality audience recording captures The Rascals during that tour on December 20, 2012, just 3 years ago today, in Port Chester, NY.
