Jefferson Airplane - 1989-09-30 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)

In 1972, the Jefferson Airplane broke up, then found new life as Jefferson Starship, and later just Starship.  But in 1989, 20 years after Woodtstock, for a brief moment the Jefferson Airplane flew once again.  Original members Paul Kantner, Marty Balin, Jack Cassady, Jorma Kaukonen and Grace Slick reunited to record an album and tour.  This soundboard recording captures the Airplane during that reunion tour, at what would be the final concert they ever played under that name, on their home turf in San Francisco on September 30, 1989, 35 years ago today.

Dave Mason - 2007-09-29 - Chicago, IL (SBD)

To say Dave Mason has had an interesting rock & roll career would be an understatement. In the late 1960s, he was an on again, off again member of Traffic. Around that time, he played acoustic guitar on Jimi Hendrix's legendary version of All Along The Watchtower, In the 1970s and 1980s. he had a successful solo career,especially with his 1977 album, Let It Flow. That disc would produce 3 top 100 tunes - So High at #89, Let It Go Let It Flow at #45 and We Just Disagree at #12. For a brief time in the 1990s, Mason was a member of Fleetwood Mac, releasing the album Time with them in 1995. In 1997, he was scheduled to be a member of Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band, performing Only You Know and I Know, We Just Disagree and Feelin Alright, but he was dropped from rehearsals before the tour started. That may explain why he doesn't always get the recognition he deserves as he didn't seem to be able to stick around with a band for more than a brief moment. That said, Mason has never stopped touring, playing upwards of 100 shows a year. This soundboard recording captures Mason in Chicago on September 29, 2007, 17 years ago today.

For October 2024, our theme will be 7 decades, 7 concerts.  In other words, we will bring you 7 concerts from each of the follwing decades - the 1960, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s.  Its a 49 show extravaganza covering 64 years of rock & roll.

Allman Brothers Band - 2004-09-28 - Washington DC (FM)

Two decades ago this very day, on September 28, 2004, the Allman Brothers took a day off from touring to play a special live show at the XM Performance Theater in Washington, DC.  The band played the entire Eat A peach album live, intersperesed with interviews and recollections of both recording the album and Duane Allman.  The disc was the last Duane appeared on and its title came from his quote "You can't help the revolution, because there's just evolution ... Every time I'm in Georgia, I eat a peach for peace".  This XM broadcast captures that historic broadcast in its entirety.

As a supplement to my book, I'm trying to compile set lists for every concert that I've attended.  I have about 160 out of 175 for the headliners, as well as numerous set lists for lead in bands I've seen. David Bowie - 1990-09-27 - Santiago, Chile (SBD)

David Bowie launched his Sound & Vision tour on March 4, 1990, a run of shows built upon an unusual premise. The set list for the tour would feature a host of his greatest hits, which Bowie would then retire from all future concert performances. For fans, it would supposedly be their last opportunity to hear classics such as Suffragette City, Ziggy Stardust, Rebel Rebel and Changes, just to name a few, in concert. Fortunately, Bowie didn’t completely abandon his old material in future tours, but at the time no one was quite certain how serious he was about the claim. This soundboard recording captures Bowie in Chile during that tour on September 27, 1990, 34 years ago today.

Steve Miller - 1976-09-26 - Capitol, Passaic, NJ (SBD)

While the Steve Miller Band originally played the blues, by 1973, the groups's music began to change, taking on more of what would soon be called an AOR sound. The tune the Joker went to #1 on the Billboard charts, and Miller set out to replicate that success with his next album. When Fly Like An Eagle was released in 1976, the album would be certified quadruple platinum, and climb to #3 on the Billboard charts. The title track would go to #2 on the Billboard singles chart, Take The Money And Run would reach #11, and Rock’n Me would go all the way to the top spot.  This soundboard recording captures Miller on tour in support of Fly Like An Eagle, at the Capitol Theatre on September 26, 1976, 4 dozen years ago today.

Neil Young - 1984-09-25 - Austin, TX (SBD)

For Neil Young, 1984 was the first year since 1966 in which he did not release an album. Neil was engaged at the time in a series of battles with his label, Geffen records. After Neil’s 2 prior albums, Trans and Everybody's Rockin', both experimental in nature, failed to do well commercially, David Geffen sued Neil for making music that was "unrepresentative" of his past work. In other words, Neil was accused of not making Neil Young music! In addition, Young was annoyed that the label refused to release Old Ways, an album of country music he had written. So Neil took to the road, backed by a country band called the International Harvesters, playing songs from an album not yet released. This soundboard recording captures Neil in Austin on September 25, 1984, 4 decades ago today.

U2 - 2015-09-24 - Berlin, Germany (IEM Matrix)

In May 2015, U2 launched their Innocence & Experience Tour, in support of their 2014 album Songs Of Innocence, The tour would be comprised of 2 legs, the first comprised of 36 shows in North America and the second consisting of 40 shows in Europe. The band would play for over 1.2 million concert goers, and gross over 150 million during the tour. This IEM Matrix recording captures U2 during the European leg of the tour, in Berlin, on September 24, 2015, 9 years ago today.

The Kinks - 1979-09-23 - Providence, RI (TV SBD) 

While the Kinks originally came to prominence in the mid 1960s; around the time of "The British Invasion" led by The Beatles and The Stones, the band experienced a second wave of popularity in the late 1970s. The band's 1977 album Sleepwalker climbed to #21 on the Billboard chart in the US, with the title track and the tune Juke Box Music becoming staples on FM radio. Around the same time, new wave acts such as The Pretenders and The Jam recorded covers of Stop Your Sobbing and David Watts, bringing the Kink's music to a whole new audience. A cover by Van Halen of You Really Got Me also sparked renewed interest in the Kink's music. Then in 1979, The Kink's released the album Low Budget, which climbed to #11 on the Billboard charts. This TV soundboard recording captures them during that late decade revival, in Providence, on September 23, 1979, 45 years ago today.

Linda Ronstadt - 1975-09-22 - San Jose, CA (SBD)

Early in her career, despite being a favorite of critics, Linda Ronstadt had limited commercial success.  That all changed in 1975. Her album, Heart Like A Wheel, went to number 1 on the Billboard charts, and spawned the number 1 single, You’re No Good, as well as the number #2 hit, When Will I Be Loved. The album went multi-platinum, selling over 2 million copies, and was nominated for a Grammy Award. In March, Rolling Stone featured Ronstadt on its cover, the first of 6 times her photo would grace the front of that publication. Later that year, in September, she released the album Prisoner In Disguise, which would reach the top 5 on the charts and sell over 1 million copies. The single from that disc, Heat Wave, a remake of the 1963 hit by Martha & The Vandellas, would also make the top 5 on the Billboard charts. This soundboard recording captures Ronstadt just after the release of Prisoner In Disguise, in San Jose on September 22 1975, 49 years ago today. John Hiatt - 1987-09-21 - San Diego, CA (Ex Aud)

On May 29, 1987, John Hiatt released the album Bring The Family, and quickly became an “overnight sensation”. Of course, earning that label was 13 years and 7 prior albums in the making. In fact, when Hiatt recorded Bring The Family, he was actually on the verge of quitting the business, having recently been dropped by his record label. Hiatt, with encouragement from John Chelew of McCabe's Guitar Shop who had heard some of the early versions of tunes that wound up on the album, decided to take one more crack at recording. Demon Records in the UK put up about $30,000 to help Hiatt record an album. Then old friends, Nick Lowe, Ry Cooder and Jim Keltner joined Hiatt in the studio. Due to budget constraints, the entire record had to be recorded in just 4 days. Hiatt and Lowe actually shared a hotel room at a local Holiday Inn to save money (Lowe, by the way, took no payment for his contribution). The result - Bring The Family became one of the cornerstones of Hiatt’s career, featuring songs such as Memphis in the Meantime, Thing Called Love, Lipstick Sunset Have a Little Faith in Me, Thank You Girl and Learning How to Love You. This excellent audience recording captures Hiatt on tour in support of Bring The Family, in San Diego, on September 21, 1987, 37 year ago this very day.

Southside Johnny - 1985-09-20 - Capitol, Passaic, NJ (SBD)

When Bruce Springsteen took the rock world by storm in 1975, he opened the door for other Jersey Shore acts to try to hit the big time. Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes are probably the 2nd best known band from that era. Their first three albums, I Don't Want To Go Home (1976), This Time It's For Real (1977), and Hearts Of Stone (1978), were filled with Stax R&B influences. All 3 discs were produced and arranged by Steve Van Zandt, the group's co-founder, who also played guitar in Springsteen's E Street band. Van Zandt's tune, I Don't Want To Go Home, became Southside's signature song, an evocative mixture of horn-based melodic riffs and sentimental lyrics. The band's repertoire also included The Fever, Talk to Me, This Time It's For Real, Love on the Wrong Side of Town, a wonderful cover of Sam Cooke's Having A Party, and the definitive version of Springsteen's Hearts of Stone. Unfortunately, Van Zandt left the band in 1979, and they never did achieve national prominence. That said, Southside and the Jukes have always been fantastic live performers, as evidenced in this soundboard recording from the Capitol Theater on their home turf in NJ, September 20, 1985, 39 years ago today.

Counting Crows - 1997-09-19 - Devore, CA (SBD)

Released in 1993, the Counting Crows debut album, August & Everything After, went to #4 on the Billboard charts on the strength of such songs as Mr. Jones, Round Here and Rain King. The disc propelled the band to stardom and they spent the next 2 years on the road, touring relentlessly. They didn't go back into the studio to work on their second album until early 1996.  That new disc, entitled Recovering The Satellites, released in October 1996, went to #1 on the Billboard charts, but received mixed reviews from the critics. Rolling Stone found the tunes, which dealt with the challenges of the band's new found fame, to be "deeply satisfying", and felt the band "largely achieved their serious ambitions." The Independent gave the album a far more negative review, calling the songs "self-pitying", and criticizing lead singer and song writer Adam Duritz for his inability "to shut up about himself". This soundboard recording captures the band on tour in support of the album, in Devore, on September 19, 1997, 27 years ago today.

In February 1997, CSN launched a North American tour that would encompass 4 legs and run until the end of 1998. The trio would be backed by Mike Finnigan on keyboards, Gerald Johnson on bass and Joe Vitale on drums. This soundboard recording captures then during that tour, in San Francisco on September 18, 1997, 27 years ago today. Unfortunately, we only have the 2nd set, though the notes do indictae what was played during the first set.

Elton John - 1972-09-17 - London, UK (SBD or Ex Aud)

By the end of 1971, it was clear that Elton John was on the verge of super stardom. Critics and fans alike recognized his talent for producing great songs (Your Song, Levon and Tiny Dancer had all made the Billboard charts) and putting on high energy concerts (as captured on the live disc 11-17-70). In early 1972, Davey Johnstone joined the band on guitar and vocals, adding the final piece to the puzzle. In May 1972, Elton released the album Honky Chateau, which became his first #1 album in the US, spending five weeks at the top of the charts and spawning the hits Rocket Man and Honky Cat. Elton, his lyricist Bernie Taupin, his backing band of Johnston, Dee Murray and Nigel Olsen, and his producer Gus Dudgeon, would combine to rule the pop charts from 1972 to 1976, as 6 albums and 6 singles hit #1. This soundboard (or excellent audience) recording captures Elton on tour in support of Honky Chateau, in London, on September 17, 1972, 52 years ago today.

After Rockpile broke up in the early 1980s, Nick Lowe embarked on a solo career. This FM broadcast captures Lowe on September 15, 19845, 4 decades ago this very day in London. Billed as Nick Lowe and His Cowboy Outfit, this show also features Paul Carrack, of Ace and Squeeze fame, on the keyboards behind Nick. In fact, the set list includes Carrack’s two best known tunes, How Long and Tempted. By the way, if you don’t own Lowe’s first album, Jesus of Cool, which was released in the U.S. as Pure Pop For Now People, then you’re missing one of the great pop albums of all time.

After spending the early part of 1974 on tour backing Bob Dyaln, The Band once again found themseleves in a supporting role on September 14, 1974, a haldf century ago today.  CSNY headlined that day at Wembley Stadium iin London before a crowd of over 100,000, with opening acts Jesse Colin Young, Joni Mitchell, Tom Scott & The LA Express, and The Band. For CSNY, it would be their last show together for over 25 years.  For The Band, it would be another monumental rock festival, to go along with their appearances at Woodstock and Watkins Glen. This TV soundboard recording captures The Band's entire set, with all the tracks split out, a big upgrade from the version we posted last year.

In the late 1970’s, Santana’s music began to move away from the traditional fusion of Latin, jazz, rock and blues toward a more album oriented rock (AOR) sound. That transition began with the album Inner Secrets in 1978, and continued on with Marathon in 1979 and Zeebop in 1981. While those albums produced some outstanding tracks, including, Stormy, Open Invitation, All I Ever Wanted and Winning, Santana’s core fan base questioned the band’s direction. One thing which did not change during this period, however, was the band’s ability to play dynamic live concerts. As this soundboard from Berkeley from September 13, 1980, 44 years ago today, demonstrates, Carlos could still play guitar with the best of them and the band could electrify any concert venue

In 1994, Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody of The Allman Brothers Band launched a side project called Gov’t Mule. Haynes and Woody, who were fans of power trios such as Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, recruited Matt Abts to handle the drums. The new band, affectionately known to its fans as The Mule, released their self titled debut album in October 1995. This soundboard recording captures The Mule just about a month before the release of that disc, on September 12, 1995, 29 years ago today, in Arkansas. Ian Hunter - 1981-09-11 - Pier 84, New York,  NY (FM)

In 1981, the Dr. Pepper Music Festival was forced out of the Wollman Rink due to complaints from local residents about the noise from the concerts. As a result, the festival moved to Pier 84, on Manhattan’s West Side, right along the Hudson River. Two years later, Miller took over the sponsorship of the series, which ran another 5 years until 1988. I was fortunate to attend a host of shows on Pier 84 between 1982 and 1987. In addition to the great music, I will always remember that the concerts were held in the shadow of the U.S.S. Intrepid. The former aircraft carrier turned museum was docked right next door at Pier 86, providing an incredible backdrop to every show. This FM broadcast captures Ian Hunter on September 11, 1981, 33 years ago today, during the inaugural season of shows at Pier 84. The show is noteworthy for 2 reasons. First, during the introductions, fans are advised that the concert is being taped for a new network called MTV. That station had just launched on August 1, 1981. Second, if you see the video for this show (plenty of clips are on You-tube), you’ll notice that the Intrepid is conspicuous by its absence. That’s because the ship did not dock at Pier 86 until 1982!
