This show was far superior to the first one on February 18, with Redding and Mitchell recapturing some of the fire and brilliance from the early days of the Experience. Despite that, the end was near for the Experience.  At a June 29 show in Denver, Jimi announced it was the band's last time playing together.  Redding was replaced by Billy Cox, and the original Experience was no more.

Los Lobos - 1987-02-21 - Madrid, Spain (SBD)

Los Lobos 1997 - #1: When Los Lobos toured Europe for the first time in February 1987, the band was still a relatively unknown act, despite the fact that their 1984 album How Will The Wolf Survive, had been a critical success, receiving rave reviews from the likes of Rolling Stone and Robert Christgau. That tour, which included stops in The Netherlnds, Denmark, Germany, Finland, Spain, France, and England, featured the band playing tunes from the soon to be released album By The Light of The Moon.  Songs such as Tears of God; Is This All There Is?, One Time, One Night; My Baby's Gone and The Hardest Time, just to name a few, could be found in each night's set list. They also played the tune that they would eventually take to the top of the charts, a cover of Ritchie Valens' La Bamba. Download this on, then come back on February 26 and 27 for part 2, 3 and 4 of this Same Tour, Different Show entry.

Tedeschi Tricks 2018 - #1:  For a brief 18 month period from February 1970 to July 1971, the Capitol Theatre in Portchester NY (not to be confused with the Capitol Theatre in Passaic NJ) was one of the premier concert venues on the East coast. Name a major rock act and they most likely played the venue. The Allman Brothers, Hot Tuna, Yes, Leon Russell, Grand Funk Railroad, Mountain, James Taylor, Traffic, Van Morrison, Jefferson Airplane and Derek & The Dominos, just to name a few, took the stage at the Capitol. The Grateful Dead were one of the most frequent visitors to the venue, including a 6 night run in February 1971. The Capitol eventually closed as a rock venue, then spent 40 years as a Broadway style theater and a catering hall.  In 2012, however, the Capitol once again becam a rock and roll venue.  In doing so, it never forgot its jam band roots. The bar in the newly renovated Capitol is named Garcia's, in honor of the late great spiritual leader and lead guitarist of the Grateful Dead.  And a new generation of jam bands have made the Capitol home, including Govt Mule, Phil & Friends and the Tedeschi Trucks Band.  This webcast recording captures the Tedeschi Trucks Band on the first of 2 nights at the Capitol on February 20, 2018, just a year ago today.  Download, this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this Same Tour, Different Show set.

Grateful Dead - 1991-02-19 - Oakland, CA (SBD)

Grateful Dead 1991 - #1: As long time readers of this blog know, I've spent numerous posts discussing the Dead's renaissance between 1989 and 1991. The number of official releases from that period is a testament to the caliber of the band's performances in that era, as they include:
  • a show from Philaddelphia from July 7, 1989
  • The 2 night stand at RFK Stadium from July 12 and 13,1989
  • the famed Warlock shows in Hampton Virginia on October 8 and 9, 1989
  • the Meadowlands NJ concert on October 16, 1989
  • the Landover, Maryland show on March 15, 1990
  • the Knickerbocker arena run from March 24 to 26, 1990;
  • 2 (yes 2) box sets from Spring 1990, featuring every show from that tour - the only other tour to be released in its entirety in Europe 1972
  • a show from from Mountain View CA from June 16, 1990
  • a show from from Pittsburgh from July 8, 1990
  • the Madison Square Garden concerts from September 14 to 20, 1990.
  • a show from Paris from October 27, 1990
  • a show from Washington DC from June, 14, 1991
  • a show from Pine Knob from June 20, 1991
  • a show from Madison Square Garden from September 10, 1991, featuring Bradford Marsalis
  • a show from Boston Garden on September 25, 1991
Without a doubt, these 3 years marked the last great run of the Dead's incredible career. This Same Tour, Different Show entry captures the first 3 shows from 1991,  the last year of that run, starting with this soundboard recording from Oakland from February 19, 1991, 29 year ago today. Download this one, then come back tomorrow and the next day for parts 2 and 3 of this Same Tour, Different Show entry

Jimi 1969 - #1: In early 1969, tickets went on sale for a February 18 concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London headlined by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. The 4500 seats sold out in under 3 hours, prompting Jimi's manager, Mike Jeffrey, to add a 2nd show on February 24, which also sold out almost instantly.  But Jeffrey had motives beyond ticket sales in adding the 2nd show. Looking to release a live album in the spring, and concerned that the band's performances had been uneven in recent months, the 2nd show provided an additional opportunity to record tracks for the potential live disc.  It also provided another opportunity to film the Experience for an upcoming TV special.  Jimi, however, was not all that keen on the TV idea, especially since he had not been asked for any input on the project.  He was also concerned about the soundnand production, insisting that he be able to use his own engineer for the 2 concerts.  To make matters worse, Hendrix was at odds with his 2 band mates, Mitch Mitchell and, especially Noel Redding. over their less than stellar performance on the recent European tour.  On top of that, during rehearsals for the 2 Royal Albert Hall show, Hendrix became so frustrated with sound system issues, that he called his former manager, Chas Chandler to help out with getting the production set up properly.  Somehow, when Jimi hit the stage for the first RAH show on February 18, 1969, 5 decades ago today as captured in this soundboard recording, all the technical issues had been resolved. Jimi turned in a brilliant performance, but his band mates were lifeless, infuriating Hendrix, Jeffrey, and Chandler.  The trio would play just one more Europen show as a unit, and we'll bring you that on February 24 as the 2nd half of this Same Tour, Different Show entry.

John Lennon 1972 - #1:  The Mike Douglas show was a daytime talk show that originated in Cleveland and later moved to Philadelphia.  One of the unique features of the show is that each week, Douglas was joined by a gust co-host. And perhaps no co-hosts in the history of the show were more unique than John Lennon and Yoko Ono, who joined Doglas for 5 shows from February 14 to February 18, 1972.  let's just say that the audinece for the Mike Douglas show wasn't quite the same demographic as the one Johnand Yoko normally appealed to. But that was exactly the point, as Yoko explained in an interview - "There’s such a gap between the young generation and the old generation now. Because this is a show that really communicates more with the older generation, we wanted to reach our hands out to them and say, 'Don’t be afraid of us. And we shouldn’t be to hostile to you either. Let’s work it together, because we have to work it together.'"  In addition to that sentiment, John, who was the target of the Nixon administration,  was trying to downplay his radical image to help avoid deportation. This TV soundboard recording captures the 3rd day of John and Yoho's run on the show, on February 16, 1972, 47 years ago today, featuring John dueting with Chuck Berry on Memphis and Johnny B. Goode.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow morning for the 2nd half of this Same Tour, Different Show set.

Joe Jackson 1980 - #2: As promised, here's the 2nd half of our Same Tour, Different Show entering featuring Joe Jackson in 1980. This one is an FM Broadcast from Boston from February 15, 1980, 39 years ago today. By the way, some confusion exists about this date. The download actually includes a 2nd copy of the show dated February 23.  Some sources say that February 23 was the broadcast date, with February 16 being the actual concert date. Others sources, however, indicate that the show was postponed from February 16 to February 23 because Joe was suffering from a sore throat. Whether February 16 or February 23 is correct, this concert features Angry Joe at his best.

Elvis Presley 1970 - #1: In early 1969, buoyed by the success of his December 1968 televised comeback special, Elvis Presley was ready to make a return to live performing. His manager, Colonel Tom Parket booked Elvis at the then new International Hotel in Las Vegas, which boasted the largest showroom in the city, for 57 shows spread over four weeks beginning July 31, 1969. The King was nervous, however, as these would be his first series of live shows since 1961, and his first in Las Vegas since a disastrous 1956 engagement. All nerves vanished when Presley took the stage for his 1st Vegas show as the audience of 2,200, including many celebrities, gave him a standing ovation before he even sang a note. Presley was spellbinding, so much so that the next day, Parker was able to negotiate a 5 year deal with The International for Elvis to play each February and August, at a then unheard of salary of $1 million annually. This Same Tour, Diffident show entry captures the first run in that contract from February 1970. Today we bring you a soundboard recording of the midnight show from February 15, 1970, 49 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back on February 23 for the 2nd half of this entry.  And while you listen, go here to read a great review of this run.

Joe Jackson - 1980-02-15 - Capitol Theatre, Passaic, NJ (SBD)

Joe Jackson 1980 - #1: When Joe Jackson hit the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ on February 15, 1980, 39 years ago today, he was in full Angry Joe mode. He was touring in support of his first 2 albums, both released in 1979, Look Sharp and I'm The Man. And as I entered the theater for the show, I was hardly in a Valentine's Day mood. I was in the process of being dumped by a girlfriend, so I was ready for a defiant, edgy, punk, new wave performance.  And I got it.  Joe delivered a fiery set, propelled by Graham Maby's base, that included an unexpected cover of the Harder They Come!  Songs like Is She really Going Out With Him and One More Time, delivered with reckless abandon, resonated perfectly with me, Download This soundboard recording of the show, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Same Tour, Different show entry. `By the way, you can actually see the show here.
