1984: Bruce Cockburn was born in Canada in 1945, and established a strong following in that country after he began his musical career. He didn’t have much impact in the US until 1980 when his single, Wondering Where The Lions Are, went to #21 on the Billboard charts. Then, his 1984 album Stealing Fire, produced the well known singles Lovers In A Dangerous Time and If I Had A Rocket Launcher.  This FM broadcast captures Cockburn on tour in support of Stealing Fire, in Germnay, on September 11, 1984, 42 years ago today.

1984: In June 1983, some 6 ½ years after the Last Waltz, The Band reunited. Well, at least 4/5 of the original group did, as Robbie Robertson chose to follow his own path. Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Garth Hudson and Richard Manuel played a series of small clubs in the summer of 1983, followed by a short run of shows in Japan in August, after which they launched an extended East Coast tour in the fall. The reunion was deemed a success, and the quartet went back out on the road in early 1984, playing almost continuously until September of that year. This sounboard recording captures them in Foxboro on September 8, 1984, 42 years ago today, leading in for Neil Young.

As promised earlier, here's part two of a concert I attended on August 11, 1984 at Caldwell College, 42 years ago today. About a half hour after Robert Hunter left the stage, the main event began. It was my the third time seeing the Jerry Garcia Band, and the third time Hunter had led in. (The first 2 times had been at the Capitol Theater on March 17, 1978 and March 1, 1980. The 4th and final time would be on November 15, 1991 at Madison Square Garden, with Blue Traveler as the opening act). Jerry hadn’t released a studio album in 2 years, since 1982’s Run For The Roses, but as with the Dead and unlike almost any other band, touring and album releases bore no relation to one another. Jerry and the Dead were always on tour, always ready for the next live moment when magic might happen thanks to the musical bond between band and audience. Ironically, at a show that had more security than almost any I had been to up to that point, a potentially dangerous moment occurred two songs into the second set. Some idiot found his way behind the stage and crashed through a screen, almost toppling over the drum kit before he was removed. Unfortunately, Garcia played just two more songs, then left without an encore, a disappointing end to what had been a great night of music. This excellent audience recording captures both sets from that night. Download this one and be thankful no one will crash through your living room while listening.

GD 1984 - Back To Back - #1: The year 1984 was a difficult time for the Grateful Dead as Jerry Garcia’s health was beginning to fail due to his addiction to heroin. Video of Jerry often shows him slumped over his guitar, his hair messy and unkempt. Yet amidst these issues, the band still found those moments of magic that set them apart from any other live act. For example, several years ago, we brought you the July 13 show from Berkeley, where a shooting star inspired a Dark Star encore, the only time that song was played between 1981 and 1989! This soundboard recording captures the band just a few days later, in Ventura on July 21, 1984, 42 years ago today, and some of the magic from Berkeley seems to have carried over!  The set list includes a surprising China Cat > I Know You Rider in the first set, while the 2nd set features Truckin' seguing into Eyes Of The World.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this Back To Back set.

The Band - 1984-06-21 - Toronto, Canada (FM)

I saw The Band live just twice, both times in 1985. The first concert, in August at Pier 84 in New York, they were the lead in for CSN. The 2nd show, in October, they headlined at one of their favorite venues, the Lone Star Cafe. 

This FM broadcast captures The Band in Toronto on June 21, 1984, 42 years ago today and about a year before I saw them live.  They were leading in for the Grateful Dead at a benefit concert for SEVA. The SEVA foundation, an international health organization, works with local communities around the world to develop self-sustaining programs that preserve and restore sight. Since 1979, rock musicians have partnered with SEVA to raise funds for their work. In addition to the Grateful Dead & The Band, Bruce Hornsby, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Graham Nash, Country Joe McDonald, Maria Muldaur and Paul Simon, just to name a few, have participated in dozens of shows to support SEVA. The Band entered the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1994, along with the Grateful Dead, The Animals, Bob Marley, Elton John, and John Lennon, just to name a few other members of that class. Ironically, Robbie Robertson, who chose not to join the reformed group in 1983, was in attendance, while Levon Helm, who led that reunion, skipped the ceremony due to his issue with Robertson. The members in attendance performed The Weight, backed by Eric Clapton who had made their induction speech.

This soundboard recording captures The Band after they had reformed, sans Robertson, in Washington, DC on April 30, 1984, 42 years ago today.

Danko & Manuel 1984 - Back to Back - #1: Despite the fanfare surrounding the Last Waltz, including a full length film and a triple disc album, that November 25, 1976 show was not the last time The Band would play live. While Robbie Robertson moved on to a solo career, the other members of the group would work together in various configurations throughout the 1980s and 1990s. The Lone Star Café in New York, famous for a giant, 40 ft high, iguana sculpture that adorned the building, became a home away from home for the re-formed group. The Band played the club on countless occasions in the late 1980s, often playing 3 or 4 nights in a row, with 2 shows each night, invoking memories of how concerts at venues such as the Fillmore East were scheduled in the Woodstock era! I was fortunate to see them at the Lone Star on October 1, 1985. My table was directly in front of the band, maybe a mere 20 feet away! This soundboard recording captures 2 of the 5 original members of The Band - Rick Danko & Richard Manuel -  playing the early show at The Lone Star on February 1, 1984, 42 years ago today.  Downlaod this one, then come back later today for part 2 of this Back To Back set.

Huey Lewis - 1984-08-20 - Saratoga Springs, NY (SBD)

I guess if you were a San Francisco musician between 1965 and 1995, at some point you were going to play alongside Jerry Garcia.  Huey Lewis was originally a member of Clover, a pyschedelic country rock band that played with Garcia's Old & In The Way in the mid 1970s.  Lewis also sat in with the Grateful Dead on a few occaisions, adding harmonica to songs such as Good Morning Little School Girl and Turn On Your Lovelight, including an appearance at the Bammies in 1998 that you can find here.  This soundboard recording captures Huey and the News in Saratoga Springs on August 20, 1984, 41 years ago today.

Elvis Costello - 1984-08-11 - Philadelphia, PA (FM)

In the late 1970s, Rock & Roll Garage asked Jerry Garcia for his opinion about the tune Watching The Detectives.  His response - “I like it. I like Elvis Costello”.  Turns out the punk rocker also liked the Dead, especially Jerry Garcia!  On May 7, 1972, during the Dead's legendary Europe 72 tour, Costello, all of 18 at the time, was in the crowd when they performed at the Bickershaw Festival. Years later, the ever versatile Mr. Costello was one of the artists who participated in the Deadicated tribute album in 1991, performing a cover of the Garcia/Hunter composition Ship of Fools. He later covered another Garcia/Hunter tune, It Must Have Been The Roses on a 2nd tribute album entitled Stolen Roses. In addition to those 2 tracks, Costello has also played 3 more Garcia/Hunter songs, Friend of the Devil, Ripple, and Tennessee Jed in concert. In 1989, Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir joined Costello for a jam session at the Sweetwater in Mill Valley CA (posted here on So Mnay Roads). It was so spontaneous that Jerry had to borrow Costello's guitar! Elvis has continued his relationship with the Grateful Dead even after Jerry's passing - he joined Further on stage in on March 27, 2001, at a show in New York. where he sang vocals on three "Jerry tunes" - Friend of the Devil, Ship of Fools, and Ripple - while wife Diana Krall sat in on keyboards!  In 2022, in honor of Jerry's 80th birthday,Costello played several shows where he performed tunes from the Garcia/Hunter catalog.

Between 1966 and 1991, the Grateful Dead played on New Year's Eve on 22 occaisions, with a run on 16 straight years between 1976 and 1991. Every one of those shows was in the Bay Area, except for 1969, when they played in Boston! The 1984 New Year's Eve show, as captured in this soundboard recording from December 31, 1984, 4 decades ago today, would be the last one in the city of San Francisco.  All future December 31 concerts were held in Oakland. This one was broadcast nationally on the radio, and I remember racing home from a party to try to tape it. I also still remember  - not always fondly - trying to time when to flip and/or change tapes, struggling to stay up to 3 am to catch the whole show (damn 3 hour time difference between NY and SF, hoping the radio signal didn't suddenly drop, and all the other horrors of the technology of the day.   All you have to do is download it!  Happy New Year!

Kingfish - 1984-12-26 - San Francisco CA (SBD)

After departing Kingfish in August 1976 as the Grateful Dead returned to full time touring, Bob Weir went 8 years before he again took the stage with them.  Then in fall 1984, Weir rejoined Kingfish as a part time member, playing sporadically with the group over the next 3 years. This soundboard recording captures Weir with Kingfish on December 26, 1984, 40 years ago today, at the Stone in San Francisco.  Bill Kreutzmann and Merl Saunders also sit in. Of note, the tape has a brief set from George Thorogood between the two by Kingfish, but it may not be from this date.  According to the GDsets.com site, the Thorogood appearance came on October 26 (not December 26) at the same venue. The 2 Kingfish sets match exactly what the GDsets.com shows for December 26. (go here for more info).

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - 1984-11-30 - Pasadena, TX (FM)

1984: We close this month with our first post ever at So Many roads from the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Formed in 1966 and still recording and perfroming today, the Nitty Gritty Dirt band is best known for their cover of Jerry Jeff Walkers tune, Mr. Bojangles.  Their version, which is a guilty pleasure of mine, went to #9 on the Billboard charts in 1970.  In 1984, they released the album Plain Dirt Fashion, which spawned band's first #1 single, when the tune Long Hard Road (The Sharecropper's Dream), climbed to the top of the country charts.  This FM broadcast captures the band during that historic year, in Texas, on November 30, 1984, 40 decades agho today.
