May's Theme at So Many Roads

In May at So Many Roads, our theme will be May 1977.  Why concerts from just a single month from one particular year?  Well, lots of reasons:
  • Incredibly, I have tapes of over 30 concerts from May 1977
  • That significant number of tapes reflects the diverse range of artists on tour in May 1977, including: Led Zeppelin, Grateful Dead, Lou Reed, Elvis Presley, Marshall Tucker Band, Billy Joel, Elton John, Pink Floyd, Muddy Waters, Fleetwood Mac, Chicago, The Ramones and Frank Sinatra.
  • The month featured 3 legendary tours in rock history.
    • Pink Floyd's In The Flesh (Animals) Tour which would be the band's last full scale world wide run of concerts with Roger Waters.  Several incidents between Waters and the crowd during that tour would become the impetus for him to write The Wall.
    • Led Zep's 1977 North American Tour, which would be the last time the band would ever play in the US.
    • The Grateful Dead's 1977 Spring Tour, which is often hailed as the band's finest run of live shows, and includes the concert that Deadheads recognize as the best in the band's history, the famed 5/8/1977 show at Barton Hall.
    • We'll bring you 1 show from the Pink Floyd tour and at least 5 concerts, if not more, from both the Led Zep and Grateful Dead runs!
  • Finally, As we mentioned in March when we featured the 1970's as our theme, that period was a time of change in rock music. The breadth and depth of live shows in May 1977 is a microcosm of what transpired throughout the decade.
So we start tomorrow with a show from Lou Reed!

Enjoy the tunz!

1979s - #4: From April 25 to April 29, 1971, the Grateful Dead took up residence at the legendary Fillmore East in New York. This run would be the band’s last at the Fillmore East, as promoter Bill Graham would close the venue less than 2 months later, on June 27 (He’d also close the Fillmore West on July 4th of that year). An official release, entitled Ladies & Gentlemen... The Grateful Dead, Fillmore East April 1971, provides 4 CDs worth of material documenting that historic 5 night stand. Blair Jackson, who wrote the liner notes for that set, described the scene as follows: “There was something in the air those five nights - besides the ubiquitous blue haze. I was lucky enough to attend two nights, April 26 and 28, and I remember a feeling of both celebration and sadness, but mostly the former, 'cause this was the Grateful Dead, after all, and you knew they were going to keep chugging along and take the party someplace else, even though our beloved Fillmore would be no more.” The official release primarily draws from the last two nights of the run, April 28 and 29th. The set only uses 4 songs from April 27, which featured one of the strangest guest appearances in Grateful Dead history, when the Beach Boys joined the band on stage. With their long beards and caftans, it was evident that the Beach Boys were trying to shed their surfer dude images and demonstrate, not all that successfully it turned out, that they were part of the counter-culture. By the way, I tried my best to uncover the origins of this guest appearance with no luck. If anyone has any insight, please leave a comment below this post. In any event, with the exception of the 4 officially released tunes, this soundboard recording captures the whole April 27, 1971 show, which took place 42 years ago today, including the entire Beach Boys appearance. Download this one, buy the official release, and relive the Dead’s last stand at one of their favorite venues.

2000s - #3; In June 1968, following the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy, Dick Holler penned the tune Abraham, Martin & John, a tribute to 4 men (Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, John Kennedy and Robert Kennedy - while Robert is not mentioned in the title, the last verse begins with "has anyone seen my old friend Bobby.") who fought for freedom and civil rights, and were tragically shot and killed because of their beliefs. The song was offered to Dion, who was recovering from heroin addiction, as his comeback tune.  The song would go to #4 on the Billboard charts, certify gold. and became Dion's first top 10 hit in 5 years,  Ironically, it would also be the last time he cracked the top 10. Far more importantly, the song became a symbol of the turbulent times that plagued the US in 1968, lamenting that "it seems the good die young, Now I just looked around and he's gone". The song continues to resonate today, as Dioncontinues to play it at live shows. This high quality audience recording captures Dion in Atlantic City on April 26, 2008, 5 years ago today, playing a set list that includes Abraham, Martin & John.

1970s - #3: When Elvis Presley launched a tour of the Midwest on April 22, after playing in Greensboro the night before, he was living on borrowed time. Grossly overweight, a fact made more noticeable by the jumpsuits he wore on stage and entirely dependent on a host of pills, Elvis could barely make it through some concerts. Yet despite his health issues, Elvis continued a touring schedule that saw him play a show in a different city every night, with no breaks in between. When Elvis played Ann Arbor on April 24, 1977, 3 dozen years ago today, he found some of the old magic for one night, especially on his versions of Unchained Melody Tryin' To Get To You, Help Me, and My Way. Download this soundboard recording to hear The King less than 4 months before his death.

1990s - #4: During the early 1990s, Bob Dylan took a break from writing new songs. Instead, he focused on recording traditional folk songs that had influenced his musical style. In late 1992, he released the disc, Good as I Been to You, which included covers of 17 folk songs, He followed that with another album of traditional tunes in 1993, entitled World Gone Wrong. Both discs received positive critical reviews. For example, famed critic Robert Christgau gave a B+ grade To Good As I Been To You and an A- to World Gone Wrong. When Dylan went our tour in early 1992, however, both albums were still in the future. The set list from his concert in Hawaii on April 24, 1992, 21 years ago today, however, gives some insight into where Dylan was headed. In addition to several acoustic versions of his classic, Dylan plays several traditional tunes such as Golden Vanity and Little Moses. Download this soundboard recording, therefore, to hear Dylan as he returns to his roots.

1990s - #3: For a group that had played their supposedly "Last Waltz" in 1976, 1994 proved to be quite a magical year for The Band. Original members Levon Helm, Rick Danko and Garth Hudson continued to tour relentlessly, incorporating tunes from their 1993 album Jericho into their set list. Among the songs from that disc was a unique cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Atlantic City. They played at Woodstock 1994 in August, 25 years after they had played the original festival in 1969. They capped the year by being elected to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. That 1994 class also included John Lennon, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Bob Marley, The Animals, Duane Eddy, and one of The Band’s long time touring partners, The Grateful Dead. Eric Clapton, who had long admired the group and cited them as one of the reasons he moved away from the style of music played by Cream, made the induction speech for The Band. This soundboard recording captures The Band on April 22, 1994, 19 years ago today, at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in Louisiana, where they led in for another band with whom they often toured, The Allman Brothers. Download this one to hear The Band the year they were honored for all their contributions to rock music.

2000 - #2: In April 2006, Bruce Springsteen released the album We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions", featuring his interpenetration of 13 folks song made popular by activist and musician Pete Seeger.  As evidenced from the title, at the heart of the album was the tune We Shall Overcome, a gospel song which became a protest song and a key anthem of the Civil Rights Movement  Martin Luther King quoted the tune is a speech on March 31, 1968, just 4 days before his assassination, proclaiming that "We shall overcome. We shall overcome. Deep in my heart I do believe we shall overcome. And I believe it because somehow the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice." This high quality audience recording captures Springsteen on April 20, 2006, 7 years ago today, playing We Shall Overcome, during a live rehearsal concert for his Seeger Sessions tour which wooed start 10 days later. One note - the sound on this is quite good but the volume is a bit low.

1990s - #2: Today we travel to South Carolina for a concert from Hootie & The Blowfish, a band that just happens to call that state home. We've posted several Hootie shows on this blog (a guilty pleasure, I fully admit it), but this one is a bit different.  The other shows featured the band playing electric, at venues across the US and Europe and focusing on songs from the mammoth selling album Cracked Rear View.  This show, however, is an acoustic performance for MTV Unplugged, in their home state of South Carolina, just 4 days prior to the release of their follow up album, Fairweather Johnson.  The band plays 4 songs from their about to be released new disc (Sad Caper, She Crawls Away, The Earth Stayed Cold at Dawn and So Strange), 2 other new tunes that did not make the album (a cover of I Hope I Don't Fall In Love With You, written by Tom Waits, and Gravity Of The Situation) and only 4 tunes from their debut disc.  Interestingly, Hootie did not play 2 of the songs that were eventually released as singles from Fairweather Johnson, Tucker Town and Old Man & Me.  Spurred by the band's popularity after Cracked Rear View, their new album sold fast at the outset, debuting at #1 on the Billboard Charts.  The disc sold over 3 million copies, a very respectable number, but Fairweather Johnson is frequently labeled as a disappointment when compared to the success of its predecessor. Download this FM recording of Hootie's acoustic performance on April 19, 1996, 17 years ago today, and judge for yourself whether the new tunes matched those on the band's debut album.

1970s - #2: Four decades ago today, on April 17, 1973, Frank Sinatra, played a short 10 song set at the White House at a gala honoring the Prime Minister of Italy.  The story behind this show, however, goes back almost 2 years prior, and would have ramifications for years to come!  In March 1971, a 55 year old Frank Sinatra, after 32 years in the entertainment business, announced his retirement,  A month later, at the Oscar ceremonies on April 15, 1971, he received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award,  a lifetime achievement award that seemingly put an official seal on his retirement decision. While he played an occasional benefit show over the next 2 years, he did not record or tour.  Then, in April 1973, he accepted then President Nixon's invitation to perform for the Italian Prime Minister. As evidenced by this soundboard recording of that night (the event was taped but no album was ever officially released), Frank showed he still could sing and perform with the best of them.  As Nixon remarked at the conclusion of Sinatra's set - "once in a while – not always! – once in a while, there is a moment when there’s a magic in the room, and a great performer, a great singer, entertainer, is able to capture it and move us all. And Frank Sinatra tonight has done that."  Within weeks of this performance, Frank was back in the studio, recording what would be his comeback album, fittingly titled, Ol’Blue Eyes Is Back.  He'd return to touring in 1974, and continued to record and perform for another 2 decades!  Download this one, therefore, to hear the performance that led to the Chairman of The Board's return to the top of the entertainment world.  PS - a huge thanks to Dino, the Tunz Master, for this one!

1980s - #4: In June 1982, Joe Jackson, the angry punk rocker, surprised fans and critics alike when he released the album Night and Day.  The disc paid tribute to the wit and wisdom of Cole Porter, and was far more piano driven than earlier albums such as Look Sharp and I'm The Man.  The album went to number 4 on the US charts, making it his only album to crack the top 5.  The single Stepping Out, reached number 6, and earned Jackson Grammy Nominations for Record of The Year and Best Male Vocalist.  This FM broadcast from the Rockpalast in Germany, from April 16, 1983, 3 decades ago today, captures Jackson on tour in support of the Night and Day album.  The show features 5 songs from that disc, a Motown medley and some of his best known tunes from his first 2 albums.

Between 1982 and 1987, he had a run of 4 consecutive multi-platinum albums, all of which cracked the top 10 on the charts. Those 4 discs - American Fool, Uh-huh, Scarecrow and The Lonesome Jubilee - yielded a dozen top 20 singles, plus 2 other which reached the top 30. 1980s - #1:  U2 made their first foray to North America in December 1980, playing 9 shows in 10 days in support of their debut album, Boy.  They returned to the US in March 1981 for a run that lasted until May 31, playing 60 shows in small clubs across the country.  At tghe time, the band had so little material that the encores consisted of replaying some of their more popular tunes, such as The Ocean, 11 O'Clock Tick Tock and I Will Follow.  Reviews of the band were harsh, such as this piece from NME - "Which is more than I can say for U2 who are basically little more than nonsense... This four-piece Irish group are nothing more than a very traditional hard rock outfit with a singer -- one Bono by name -- who'd love to be Rod Stewart, in imitation of whom he moves much of the time, when he isn't busy imitating the inevitable Iggy, of course...U2 are really quite awful, though the young people -- particularly the mutant punks -- at the pop concert seemed to enjoy their tired old fakery." Nothing in that review gave any indication that U2 would one day be the the biggest and best band in the world.  Download this soundboard recording from Kansas City, MO from April 6, 1981, to hear U2 on their first major U2 tour.

2000s - #3: In August 2002, the Rolling Stones launched their world wide LICKS tour, the name being taken from the greatest hist album, Forty Licks, which would be released on October 1 of that year.  After a long run in North America, the Stones moved on the Australia, Japan and Singapore in February and March of 2003.  Then on April 4, 2003, 8 years ago today, the band played their first concert ever in India, at the Palace Grounds in Bangalore.  Ticket prices ranged from $6.50 to $32, making the show the bargain of the new century. Unfortunately, after about 5 or 6 songs, torrential rains drenched the outdoor venue,  making conditions difficult for both the audience and the band.  The resulting technical problems made it difficult to recognize some songs, and others seemed rushed, as if the band wanted to get themselves and the crowd out of the rain as quickly as possible.  That said, it was still an historic night, marking the Stone's first appearance in the world's 2nd most populated country! This FM broadcast captures 17 of the 21 songs that the Stones played in Bangalore.  Download it and judge for yourself how well the band handled the Indian monsoon.

1990s - #1: The period from 1989 to 1991 saw the Grateful Dead at their best after Jerry Garcia's miraculous recovery from a diabetic coma in 1987.  In fact, their concerts from the spring of 1990 have been showcased on numerous official releases, including Without A Net, Dozin' At The Knick and Terrapin Station Limited Edition - 03/15/1990. Moreover, just recently, the band released an 18 CD set, appropriately entitled Spring 1990, that featured 6 complete concerts from that tour.  The set is a must have for any Deadhead, even if it does not include 2 other exceptional shows from that tour.  Fortunately, you can get both of those right here at So Many Roads.  One is the March 29 show that featured Branford Marsalis, which we posted here. The other is the last night of the tour, from Atlanta, on April 3, 1990, 23 years ago today. Download this soundboard recording to hear a fitting end to the Dead's magnificent 1990 spring tour, including a rare but highly appropriate encore of And We Bid You Goodnight.
