By the way - 2 notes for the Dead Heads out there. First, this is Betty Cantor soundboard, whose “Betty Board” tapes of the Dead are the stuff of legends. Second, Loggins plays a slowed down version of Friend of The Devil, which is much different than the bluegrass pace the Dead used when they recorded the track for the album American Beauty. Legend has it that Garcia heard this version and liked it so much that Dead adopted the slower tempo for their live performances of the tune!

Jimmy Page & The Black Crowes - 2000-06-28- Pittsburgh PA (SBD)

Page & Crowes 2000 - #1: In October 1999, Jimmy Page and The Black Crowes teamed up for 6 shows, 3 in New York City. 1 in Worcester, MA and 2 in Los Angeles. Each night's set list featured a mix of Led Zep and Black Crowes tunes. The LA shows yield a live album entitled, Live At The Greek. Unfortunately, due to contractual issues, the album could not include any Black Crowes material. The October shows were so successful that Page and the Crowes went on tour together from June to October 2000. This soundboard recording captures them on June 28, 2000, 15 years ago today, in Pittsburgh. Download this one, then come back in 2 days for part 2 of our Jimmy Page/Black Crowes Same Tour, Different Show entry from 2000.

Traffic 1970 - #1: After Blind Faith disbanded in late 1969, Steve Winwood went to work on what he thought would be a solo album. Partway through the recording, he invited former Traffic band mates Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood to join him. Traffic had been reborn, and the album that would emerge from this reunion was the legendary disc, John Barleycorn Must Die. The trio then went on tour in support of the new release. This FM broadcast captures them on June 26, 1970, 45 years ago today, at the Capitol Theater in Portchester NY, not to be confused with the venue by the same name in Passaic NJ! Legendary WNEW-FM DJ Scott Muni introduces each member of the band individually, calling Winwood, "STEVIE" in the process. Traffic then launches into a superb set, including the entire new album with the exception of Glad. Download this one, then ome back in 3 days for the 2nd half of this entry.

L&M 1972 - #1: - Today, we bring you Loggins & Messina from the Shaefer Music Festival in New York City on June 25, 1972, 43 years ago today. The Schaefer Music Festival ran summers from 1968 to 1976 at the Wollman Skating Rink in Central Park. The festival had originated in 1966 and was sponsored that year and the following one by Rheingold. Dr. Pepper took over sponsorship in 1977. In 1981, the festival moved to Pier 84, next to where the Intrepid is docked. Miller took over sponsorship in 1983 until the series ended in 1988. During that 20 year span, some of the biggest names in rock played the summer series, including Led Zeppelin, The Byrds, The Band, Van Morrison, The Eagles, and CSN, just to name a few. In the early days, ticket prices ranged from $1 to $3, making it one of the best bargains in rock. Download this FM broadcast of L&M, and remember a simpler and far less expensive time! Then, stop back in 5 days for the 2nd installment of this Same Tour, Different show entry from Loggins & Messina.

July's Theme At So Many Roads

For July, our theme is very simple - The Grateful Dead. As many of you may know, the surviving members of the Grateful Dead - Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzman - are reuniting for the last time for 2 "Fare Thee Well" shows in Santa Clara on June 27 & 28 and 3 in Chicago on July 3,4 and 5th.  These 5 shows will mark the original members’ last-ever performance together. The band will be joined by Trey Anastasio, Jeff Chimenti and Bruce Hornsby.

These 5 shows are symbolic in so many ways.  They mark the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead. The last 3 take place 20 years after the final Grateful Dead concert on July 9, 1995, at the very same venue, Soldier Field in Chicago.  They mark 2 decades since we lost Jerry Garcia in August 1995.

So in keeping with that spirit, So Many Roads will bring you all the following in July
  1. More Grateful Dead shows than you can count, spanning the bands entire career from the 1960s to the 1990s.  We have shows from every year except 7: no soundboard tapes from July exist for 1965, 1967 and 1968 while the band did not play any concerts in July in 1975, 1977, 1991 and 1993.
  2. Solo performances from Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Robert Hunter & Bruce Hornsby
  3. Concerts from artists who have sat in with the Dead on stage, or vice versa.  While some may seem obvious - think the Allman Brothers or The Band  - you may be surprised at the broad range of acts who performed alongside the Dead or its members. In fact, we'll have over 20 of these posts and in each, we'll be sure to tell you all about when these folks played with the Grateful Dead.
So in July,  "Let There Be Songs To Fill The Air. "  Enjoy the tunz as we relive "the long strange trip" of "a band beyond description, like Jehovah's favorite choir, people joining hand in hand, while the music played, the band, Lord they're setting us on fire!"

And remember "THE MUSIC NEVER STOPS!" so "If you get confused, LISTEN TO THE MUSIC PLAY".

Enjoy the tunz!

Allmans 1996 - #1: When the Allman Brothers reunited in the early 1990’s. a pivotal element of their new found success was the guitar play of Warren Haynes. Haynes decided to leave the band in early 1997, however, in part to focus full time on Gov’T Mule and in part, because of on-going dissension with Dicky Betts. So, the 1996 tour really represented Warren’s last hurrah with the band. This soundboard recording captures the Allmans with Warren on June 22, 1996, 19 years ago today. Download this one, then come back in 2 days for the 2nd part of this Same Tour, Different Show entry.

Led Zep - Final Tour 1980 - #3:  Here’s the 3rd and last of our posts from Led Zep’s final tour. Once their 1977 North American tour ended, Led Zeppelin took a 2 year hiatus until August 1979, when they played 2 shows at Knebworth. They then took almost another year off from live performances, until they launched a tour in July 1980. This tour, however, was unlike many of their previous ones. They played just 14 shows, all on the European mainland. Robert Plant was reluctant to tour the United States, and the band wanted to avoid the negative press which had dogged them in their homeland. Led Zep played smaller venues, with a scaled down sound system and a modest stage and lighting setup. They shortened the set list, with some of the band's lengthier songs such as No Quarter and Moby Dick being cut. Those tunes were replaced by some shorter numbers from the bands recent release, In Through The Out Door, including In The Evening, Hot Dog and All of My Love. They opened each show with The Train Kept A-Rollin, which had not been part of their live sets since 1969. The band seemed rejuvenated by these shows, so much so that they were actually considering another US tour, when, tragically, John Bonham passed away. As such, the 1980 tour would, unfortunately for the rock world, be the band's last. This soundboard recording captures Led Zep on June 20, 1980, 35 years ago today, in Brussels. Come back in 3 days for the 4th part of this Same Tour, Different Show entry

Led Zep - Final Tour 1980 - #1: Welcome to the first of 3 posts this month from final Led Zep toue.  Unlike the massive stadium tours that Led Zep had embarked on in the late 1970’s, their 1980 European run consisted of just 14 shows in smaller venues. The set list incorporated 3 songs from their 1979 album In Through The Out Door - Hot Dog, All Of My Love and In The Evening - as well as the first performance of Train Kept A-Rollin since 1969. This soundboard recording captures the opening night of the tour on June 17, 1980, 35 years ago today. The concert is notable because it concludes with Whole Lotta Love and Heartbreaker, 2 tunes which the band rarely played during this run. Download this one to hear Led Zep embark on their last ride together, as John Bonham would die from alcohol abuse just about 2 months after the end of the tour. Come back tomorrow for the 2nd installment of this series.

GD 1985 - #1: Today we begin a 6 part entry featuring the Grateful Dead in the Spirng of 1985, the year the band celebrated their 20th anniversary. Deadheads tend to passionately debate the quality of the music that year. Some feel that the band, inspired by their milestone anniversary, played their best shows of the 80s. Others don't believe the music was much different from the prior years, and certainly not up to the standard of 1987 or 1989. I tend to lean in the direction that 1985 provided many inspired moments especially during the Spring run, though it’s clear that by year end, Jerry was mired deep in a cloud of drugs which would eventually contribute his near death coma in 1986. This soundboard, from June 14, 1985, 3 decades ago today, at one of the Dead’s favorite venue, The Greek Theater in Berkeley, is emblematic of the band’s new found creativity that year - inspired so choices such as Keep on Growin' from the Derek & The Dominoes, unique set list arrangements, such as Morning Dew to open the 2nd Set, and the return of old favorites that hadn’t been played in years, such as Comes A Time in set 2. Download this one, then stop back tomorrow for the next installment of the Dead in Spring 1985.
