Santana - 1977-11-30 - Tokyo, Japan (SBD) 

1977 - In October 1977, Santana had released Moonflower, a double album that included both live tracks from their 1976 European tour and new studio material recorded in San Francisco. The disc also mixed musical styles, incorporating not only the Latin and blues-rock styles of the late 1960s and early 1970s, but also the experimental and spiritual jazz fusion sound that characterized the band's mid-1970s work. This dichotomy of styles and material, which could have resulted in an incoherent mess of an album, instead blended seamlessly to produce a critical and commercial success. The album went to # 10 on the charts and was eventually certified platinum. It would be 22 years until another Santana album accomplished both those feats, when Supernatural went to #1 on the charts and was certified as 15 times platinum in 1999. Moonflower’s studio tracks included a cover version of the Zombies' 1960s hit song, She's Not There, which was released as a single and peaked at number 27. The song was the first Santana recording to hit the Top 40 on the Billboard charts in 5 years, since No One to Depend On reached number 36 in 1972. This soundboard recording from November 30, 1977, 37 years ago today, from Tokyo catches Carlos about a month after the release of Moonflower.

The Police - 1979-11-29 - Palladium, NY (FM)

1979 - a few years ago, we posted a WPIX-FM radio broadcast of The Police from September 29, 1979, and discussed how PIX was trying to differentiate itself from other radio stations in NY. Well, it wasn’t long before the WNEW-FM, the nation’s leading AOR station, caught on to what PIX was doing and decided to also capitalize on the growing interest in punk and new wave music. So just 60 days after the PIX featured the Police live from the Hotel Diplomat, WNEW did a broadcast featuring Sting, Copeland and Summers from the Palladium in NY, on November 29, 1979, 35 years ago today. In addition to taking place at a larger venue and being broadcast on a more popular station, this show also featured 3 additional songs - Next To You, Deathwish. an Visions Of The Night. Perhaps WNEW moving into territory that WPIX once claimed as its own is one reason the latter station switched formats in early 1980! In any event, download this one to hear The Police as they began to gain acceptance on mainstream rock and roll radio

December's Theme At So Many Roads

In December, our them will be Cover Songs! Every concert in December will include a unique or memorable cover song, some of which you wouldn't expect from the artist being posted. Cover songs have a special place in rock history. Some, such as Jimmy Hendrix's cover of Dylan's All Along The Watchtower, have become the definitive version of the song. Others, such as James Taylor's cover of How Sweet It Is, become so associated with the artist that you may forget its a cover (as I did back last September when I forgot the song was originally done by Marvin Gaye - my bad!) Still others introduced an entire genration to an unfamiliar and under appreciated musical genre, as Eric Clapton's cover of Bob Marley's I Shot The Sheriff did for reggae.

So for all those reasons and more, December is all about Cover Songs. Enjoy the tunz!

George Harrison - 1974-11-26 - Baton Rouge (HQ Aud)

1974 - A few years ago, I posted a soundboard recording of George Harrison’s November 12, 1974 concert in Los Angeles. That might be the only known soundboard tape available from that tour. Fortunately, plenty of audience recordings are available, and this one, from his November 26, 1974 show, 37 years ago today, is one of the best. The tape includes all the Harrison and Billy Preston tunes, but excludes all of the Ravi Shankar material, effectively dealing with one of the biggest complaints about the tour. Harrison fans at the time were quite unhappy with the length of Shankar’s portion of the show, feeling it took the spotlight away from the quiet Beatle. Obviously, this taper agreed with those complaints! Harrison’s vocal issues, which plagued him, throughout the tour, are also readily apparent upon listening to this show. That said, this one is definitely worth the download, if simply to hear George on his only solo tour of the United States.

The Byrds - 1970-11-26 - Cleveland, OH (SBD) 

1970 - On September 14, 1970, The Byrds released the album Untitled, a double disc featuring both live and studio material. The disc was a critical and commercial success, being heralded as a return to form for the band. The line up for the album - Roger McGuinn, Clarence White, Skip Battin and Gene Parsons - had the longest tenure of any configuration of The Byrds. In addition, they developed a reputation for being a formidable live act, honing their skills by touring relentlessly during a nearly 3 year stretch from September 1969 to July 1972. David Bowie - 1972-11-25 - Cleveland, OH (Ex Aud) 

1972 - On June 6, 1972, David Bowie released his 5th studio album, the now legendary The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. The album tells the story of Bowie's alter ego Ziggy Stardust, a rock star who acts as a messenger for extraterrestrial beings. The character of Ziggy also helped shapre what became know as glam rock. While the album only went to #75 on the Billboard charts at the time of release, the disc is now considered one of rock’s greatest works. Rolling Stone, for example, ranked it at #35 on its list of the 500 best albums of all time. This excellent audience recording captures Bowie on tour in support of the Ziggy Stardust album, in Celeveland on November 25, 1972, 42 years ago today.

Jefferson Starship - 1974-11-24 - San Francisco CA (SBD) 

1974 - When the Jefferson Airplane dissolved in 1973, its successor almost immediately rose from the ashes. Jefferson Starship, led by former Airplane members Grace Slick and Paul Kantner, released the album Dragonfly in 1974, featuring the single, Ride The Tiger. By 1975, Marty Balin, another Airplane refugee, who makes a guest appearance at this show had joined the Starship full time. In June 1975, the Starship would release the album Red Octopus, which would become the best selling album that any configuration of Jefferson Airplane/Starship would release. The album hit number 1 on the Billboard charts, and the single, Miracles, went to number 3. This soundboard recording captures the Starship just before the phenomenal success of Red Octopus, in their home town of San Francisco, on November 11, 1974, 4 decades ago this very day.

Grateful Dead - 1978-11-24 - Capitol Theatre, Passaic, NJ (FM) 

1978 - Stories abound regarding the Grateful Dead’s concert at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ on November 24, 1978, 3 dozen years ago today. The Capitol held less than 3000 people, so tickets were only available via the Dead’s mail order hotline. The band was playing the venue because their tour manager, John Scher, ran the Capitol. The band had played at the Pyramids just about 2 months earlier, so Hamza El Din, an Egyptian composer, musician, and vocalist, joined the band during the second set for a tune called Ollin Arrageed. Garcia was very sick and his voice was shot, but he took the stage because the show was scheduled for a nationwide FM broadcast. What he couldn’t do with is voice he certainly made up for with some inspired guitar work. The next day, the Dead cancelled the rest of the East Coast tour due to Jerry’s illness, rescheduling the dates for January 1979. If that’s not enough, let me add my own story. I didn’t have tickets but called the Capitol box office in the afternoon to see if maybe there were some left. The guys who answered were clearly stoned, but they said they might be able to sneak me in if I brought them some more weed! I settled for listening on the radio and still laugh about it every time I re-listen to this one!

1979 - In March 1979, Ian Hunter released the album You're Never Alone with a Schizophrenic, which was produced by his long time collaborator Mick Ronson. The album included the tunes Just Another Night and Cleveland Rocks, the videos for which would eventually get plenty of airplay on MTv. In fact, Hunter’s concert on Pier 84 in New York in 1981 would be one of the earliest concerts shown on the then fledgling network. This FM broadcast captures Hunter on tour in support of Schizophrenic, on November 22, 1979, 35 years ago today.

Bill Withers - 1972-11-21 - London, UK (SBD)

1972 - In 1970, Bill Withers was working as an assembler for Douglas Aircraft while trying to break into the music business. Sussex records liked his demo tape, and assigned the legendary Booker T Jones to produce his debut album. In 1971, Bill Withers released the album Just As I Am, and the rest is history. The single from that album, Ain't No Sunshine, sold over a million copies, and won a Grammy for best R&B song. His 2 follow up singles, both released in 1972, Lean on Me and Use Me, also sold over a million copies. This soundboard recording features Withers singing all 3 of his hit tunes. The question is, however, when is it from? While the notes that accompanied the recording state that its from BBC In Concert 1974, I'm not sure that's accurate. I found a link listing every BBC In Concert show and Bill Withers did not appear on that program at any time in the 1970's. I did find, however, that Withers was on the Old Grey Whistle test, a BBC TV show, on 11-21-1972 (go here for a complete list of Old Grey Whistle test shows) but don't know for certain if this tape is from that performance. It would seem likely that is is, however, since the Old Grey Whistle test seemed to focus on more stripped down performances with simple staging. Regardless of the date or venue, bootlegs of the legendary Bill Withers are rare to say the least, making this one an essential addition to your music collection.

Linda Ronstadt - 1976-11-21 - Amsterdam, Netherlands (FM) 

1976 - In August 1976, Linda Ronstadt released the album Hasten Down The Wind, which became her 3rd straight million selling disc, making her the first female artist in history to accomplish that feat. The album also earned Linda her second of a record 10 Grammy Awards for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance The album was different from 1974's Heart Like A Wheel and 1975's Prisoner In Disguise in that she chose to showcase new songwriters as opposed to country rock tunes. The title track, for example was written by then up and coming songwriter Warren Zevon. One of the most famous tracks from the album, Someone To Lay Down Beside Me, was composed by the then little known Karla Bonoff. The album received huge critical acclaim, and also spent several weeks in the top 3 on the Billboard charts. Ronstadt went on tour later that year in support of the album, and this soundboard captures her 38 years ago today, November 21, 1976, in Amsterdam.

Derek & The Dominos - 1970-11-20 - Santa Monica, CA (SBD or HQ Aud) 

1970 - They recorded a double album, of just 14 songs, which flopped both critically and commercially upon release. They played about 30 concerts in the UK and about the same number in the US, mostly at small clubs and theaters. Their tour was marked by massive drug abuse and alcohol consumption. They split apart almost as quickly as they came together, with tension between the band members and paranoia due to all the drugs making it impossible for them to record a 2nd album. They were Derek and The Dominos, and their one studio effort, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, is now regarded as one of the masterpieces of rock and roll. The title track is one of the most famous songs in rock history, and other tunes from the album, such as Bell Bottom Blues, Anyday, Keep on Growing, and Why Does Love Have To Be So Sad, are all classics. It is one of the albums I grew up with, that I bought just about 2 years after its release, that I wore out the groves on, that helped foster my everlasting love for all things rock and roll. This SBD or HQ Audience (not sure which) recording captures Eric Clapton, Bobby Whitlock, Carl Radle and Jim Gordon on their one and only tour, on November 20, 1970, in Santa Monica, CA, 44 years ago today. Unlike many bootlegs from this date, this recording includes both the early and late shows. The vocals are a tad scratchy, but the band is on fire, with Clapton’s lightning fast licks demonstrating why his work as Derek just may have been the pinnacle of his legendary career.

Frank Sinatra - 1979-11-20 - Atlantic City, NJ (SBD) 

1979 - On May 26, 1978, Resorts International opened on the Atlantic City boardwalk, becoming the first legalized casino on the East Coast of the United States. More casinos soon followed, and as a result, Atlantic City began attracting talent once reserved for Las Vegas. In November 1979, Fran Sinatra played 7 nights at Resorts in Atlantic City, returning to a town he had once owned when the legendary 500 Club graced the boardwalk (see this post for more details). This soundboard recording captures Frank in AC on November 20, 1979, 35 years ago today.

Kingfish - 1975-11-18 - Roslyn NY (FM) 

1975 - Much like the Grateful Dead, Kingfish is an American band with roots in San Francisco. Matthew Kelly co-founded Kingfish in 1973 with New Riders of the Purple Sage bass player Dave Torbert and fellow San Francisco Bay Area musicians Robbie Hoddinott, Chris Herold, and Mick Ward. However, Ward died in a car accident later that year, and was soon replaced by Barry Flast, another keyboardist from San Francisco. And of course, Bob Weir, also from San Francisco, would join the band for a while in the mid 1970s while the Grateful Dead were on hiatus. This FM broadcast captures Kingfish at My Father’s Place in Rosyln, NY on November 18, 1975, 39 years ago today

1974 - After a long 2 year tour in support of The Dark Side of The Moon album, Pink Floyd scaled back their live shows considerably in 1974. In fact, they only did 2 brief tours - a 7 night stint in France in June (6 other dates were cancelled) and a 20 show run in the UK in November and December. The band did 2 sets each night, with the first testing out new material that would eventually find its way onto the Wish You Were Here and Animals albums, and the second featuring the Dark Side of the Moon disc in its entirety. This soundboard recording captures the 2nd set and encore from November 11, 1974, 4 decades ago this very day, from the Wembley Empire Pool in London. Download this one to hear live the album with the longest stay in history on the Billboard charts, 741 weeks from 1973 to 1988! Grateful Dead - 1970-11-16 - Fillmore East, NY (SBD)

Earlier today, we presented Traffic’s set at the Fillmore East on 11-16-1970,  and explained why the shows that day did not take place on 11-23 at the Anderson Theater, as originally believed. Now we feature the Grateful Dead’s performance from that 11-16 Fillmore concert that took place 44 years ago today. The Dead play a short show by their standards, possibly because both Traffic and Hot Tuna had already played that night.By the way, this is our first 1970 Dead post, which was a unique year for the band. Both Mickey Hart and Tom Constanten had left the band early in the year, reducing the Dead to 1 keyboard player, Pig Pen and 1 drummer, Bill Kreutzman. Pigpen still played a lead role in the band at this time, with his versions of songs such as King Bee, Turn On Your Lovelight, Alligator, Hard To Handle and Good Lovin’, providing a bluesy counterpoint to the band’s psychedelic jams. On this night, Steve Winwood joined the Dead about mid way through the set, playing Pigpen’s Hammond organ and adding vocals on the Not Fade Away > Going Down The Road > Not Fade Away segue. Various sources on the web also indicate that the rest of Traffic, as well as Jorma and Jack of Hot Tuna, also joined the Dead at some point. All that, plus the unique saga behind this recording, makes this one a must have for your collection.

Traffic - 1970-11-16 - Fillmore East, NY (SBD)

1970 - For years, soundboard tapes circulated of sets by Traffic and The Grateful Dead at what was believed to be a concert on November 23, 1970 at the Anderson Theater in New York City. Over the years, however, evidence has emerged that indicates that these shows actually took place on November 16 of that year, 44 years ago today, at the Fillmore East! That evidence, detailed in the notes that accompanied the tapes of these 2 shows, includes the following:

1. Traffic has been confirmed, in a letter written by the Kleinhans Music Hall, as having played at the Kleinhans Music Hall, Buffalo, NY on 11-23-70. This firmly places them out of New York City on that date.
2. It would hardly be surprising for Traffic to have been in New York City on 11-16-1970, since they played the Fillmore East on 11-18 and 11-19. (The 11-18 show is posted on this blog).
3. Bill Graham introduces the Dead. As Bill Graham owned the Fillmore East, and was not friendly with the owner of the Anderson Theater, it seems inconceivable these shows could have taken place at the Anderson Theater.
4. After Bob Weir sings the Frozen Logger, several people on stage can be heard attempting to get Jack Casady to join in saying, "Hey Casady, why don't you play" and "Hey Jack, hey Jack, c'mon up". Hot Tuna definitely played on at the Fillmore on 11-16 and they are not known to have played at the Anderson Theater.
5. An eyewitness who attended the 11-16-1970 Fillmore show clearly recalls Steve Winwood and Jorma Kaukonen sitting in with the Dead.
6. Music was commonly played over the P.A. between sets at the Fillmore to promote upcoming shows. During this show, excerpts from Elton John singing Honky Tonk Women were played as Elton would be at the Fillmore the following weekend, November 20th and 21st, as the warm up for Leon Russell.
7. On page 382 in his book Long Strange Trip, Dennis McNally mentions this show as being from the Fillmore East, 11/16/70.

So all signs point, therefore, to Traffic and the Grateful Dead sharing the stage not on 11-23 at the Anderson as indicated on the artwork, but on 11-16 at the Fillmore. Regardless of the location, both these shows feature exceptional performances by 2 legendary bands. 1970 - On November 16, 1970, 42 years ago today, Frank Sinatra played 2 shows at London’s Royal Festival Hall as part of a benefit for the United World Colleges Fund. Princess Grace Of Monaco, the former actress Grace Kelly, who had starred with Sinatra in the movie High Society in 1956, introduced Sinatra at both shows. This soundboard recording captures Sinatra at the early show that night, supported by an orchestra conducted by Bill Miller.

1977 - By the fall of 1977, the punk/new wave movement had gained serious momentum in England. Stiff Records, one of the bastions of promoting these 2 new genres, had launched the 1977 Live Stiffs Tour, featuring Ian Dury and Rockpile, 2 of the leading lights of this new rock sound. Also on the bill was a short, scrawny, bespectacled lad who hardly looked the part of punk rocker. As we know, looks can be deceiving and such was the case here. Elvis Costello and the Attractions took the tour by storm. Playing tunes from his debut album My Aim Is True and the soon to be released This Year’s Model (quite a one two punch for an artist’s first 2 discs), Costello demonstrated that he was the new leader of the latest British musical invasion. This FM broadcast from November 15, 1977, 37 years ago today, from San Francisco, captures Costello on his first US tour. Within weeks, he would be on Saturday Night Live, changing songs midstream, surprising the producers, and getting himself banned from that show for a dozen years. 1976 - In August 1976, Clapton released the album No Reason To Cry, which featured contributions from all 5 members of The Band, as well as Bob Dylan. The disc went to #15 on the Billboard charts in the US. EC launched a US tour in November in support of the album. Fittingly, the last stop on the tour was at The Band’s farewell concert, the Last Waltz, on November 26, 1976. This soundboard recording captures EC about half way through the tour, on November 12, 1976, 38 years ago today, in San Antonio. 1976 - In November of 1976, Santana launched a European tour, which showcased songs from their recently released album Amigos, as well as their soon to be released disc, Festival. While neither album featured any Billboard chart hits, both went gold and featured inspired playing by Carlos. Santana shared the bill with Journey on this tour, which set up the possibility of some on stage collaboration with former band members, Neil Schon and Greg Rolie. That's exactly what happened on November 14, 1976, 38 years ago today, in Edinburgh, Scotland.  Rolie and Schon joined Santana on stage for 4 songs, including the rarely played Just In Time To See The Sun. Paul McCartney & Wings - 1975-11-13 - Melbourne, Australia (SBD) 

1975 - When Paul McCartney founded Wings in late 1971, then took the band on a 1972 tour of English Universities, traveling by bus and showing up unannounced and asking to play, many though the ex-Beatle had lost his mind. Sir Paul, however, knew just what he was doing. Between 1973 and 1975, McCartney and Wings would score 3 consecutive #1 albums on the Billboard charts - Red Rose Speedway, Band On The Run and Venus & Mars. He launched the Wings Over The World Tour in September 1975, visiting Europe and then heading off to Australia. Of course, the culmination of that tour would be the North American leg the following Spring, which would come on the heels of his 4th straight #1 disc, Wings At The Speed of Sound, and generate his 5th consecutive one, Wings Over America, the 3 disc live set recorded during that tour. This sound board recording captures portions of his show in Melbourne on November 11, 1975, 39 years ago today. Wish we had the whole concert, but given how rare high quality Wings recordings are, I guess we’ll take what we can get.

Elton John - 1970-11-12 - San Francisco CA  (SBD)

1970 - In late August 1970, Elton John made his first visit to the US, headlining at the Troubador Club in Los Angeles. His dynamic live shows captivated critics and word spread quickly across the country about the latest rock import from London. From November 12 to 15, Elton led in for the Kinks for 4 nights at the Fillmore West. Less than a week later, he was the lead-in for Leon Russell for 2 nights at The Fillmore East on November 20 and 21. In between, he played a live set at A&R Studios in New York, which was broadcast live by WNEW-FM. That show further cemented his reputation for delivering incredible live performances. In fact, according to WNEW’s Dave Herman, Elton cut his hand at some point during the performance, and by the end of the show, his piano keyboard was covered with blood. The performance was eventually released as a live album, fittingly titled 11-17-70, but of course in typical record company fashion, only included 6 of the 13 tracks that Elton played. Fortunately, soundboard recordings of his Fillmore shows are available to present a more complete picture of his live concerts at the time. This one captures his first show at the Fillmore West on November 11, 1970, 44 years ago today.
