In 1982, the Allman Brothers broke up, unable to operate as band anymore due to tensions, alcohol and drugs. Betts explained that :we broke up in '82 because we decided we better just back out or we would ruin what was left of the band’s image." For most of the next 5 years, Gregg Allman wandered around in a drunken haze, unable or unwilling to make new music. He later explained that “No two ways about it, the ’80s were rough. [...] It was seven years of going, "What is it that I do?” Being self-employed your whole life, that becomes a certain rock, a reinforcement. When that’s gone, not only are you bored stiff, but you just want to cry—"What do I do? I know I used to serve a purpose." In 1987, somehow, Allman again found that purpose, recording a solo album for Epic Records appropriately entitled I'm No Angel. The title track became a top 40 hit, and Allman went on tour in support of the disc. This FM broadcast captures him during that tour, in Philadelphia on May 14, 1987, 32 years ago today. By the way, the success of that album brought new attention to the Allman Brothers, which was further reinforced 2 years later by the release of the box set Dreams, celebrating the band's 20th anniversary. As the 1980s closed, the Allman Brothers would reform, and stay together for another 30 plus years!

Bob Weir & Ratdog - 1997-06-30 - Scranton PA (SBD)

In the wake of Jerry Garcia's passing in 1995, the Grateful Dead disbanded rather than continue playing as a unit without their long time guitarist and spiritual leader. Over time, they reversed that decision, reforming to play in various guises such as The Other Ones, The Dead and most recently, Furthur. Furthur has always been part of the band's vocabulary, dating back to the the 1960's when it was name of the bus used by Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters as part of the Electric Kool Aid Acid tests, The Grateful Dead, of course, were the house band for those events! The Dead's tune The Other One references Furthur in the line "Captain Neal at The Wheel, of the bus to never never land". So, it's not surprising then that the first musical initiative after Jerry’s death by former members of the Dead was dubbed "The Furthur Festival". The Furthur Festival, which ran during the summers from 1996 to 1998, was a collection of bands with links to Dead, such as Bob Weir's Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Mystery Box, Hot Tuna, Los Lobos and former GD keyboardist, Bruce Hornsby, just to name a few. This soundboard recording captures Ratdog's set set at the Further Festival in Scranton on June 30, 1997, 22 years ago today.

• In a 2015 interview, Greg Allman said “Bobby Weir is one of my favorite people on this earth. Yes, I think it would be wonderful if we all merged and came up with something brand-new. Not necessarily Grateful Dead songs and Allman Brothers songs, but all-new material,” Gregg said. 
• In the summers of 2007 and 2008, The Allman Brothers and Ratdog played several dates together.
• On March 28, 2009, during the Allman's 40th anniversary run at the Beacon, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh sat in for several tunes.
• Bob Weir has played at Warren Haynes's Christmas Jam in 2002 and 2016.

Tedeschi Trucks Band - 2011-06-29 - London UK (FM)

After touring together in 2007 as the Derek Trucks  & Susan Tedeschi's Soul Stew Revival, the husband & wife duo merged their respective groups to form the Tedeschi Trucks Band in 2010.[ the newly formed band released their first album in 2011, entitled Revelator.  The album went to #12 on the Billboard Charts, and won a Grammy for best blues album.  This FM broadcast captures the band on tour in support of Revelator on June 29, 2011, 8 years ago today.

He would not go back into the studio until 1987, when he recorded the album I'm No angel. As the 1980s became the 1990s, the Allman Brothers, who had disbanded in 1982, once again revived their career. The Allmans reformed in 1989, as the success of Greg Allman’s tune I’m No Angel, coupled with the release of the Dreams box set to commemorate the group’s 20th anniversary, generated renewed public interest in the band. Original members Allman, Dickey Betts, Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson and Butch Trucks were joined by new members Warren Haynes, Johnny Neel and Allen Wood, infusing the band with additional energy. Moreover, Betts and Haynes gave the band a dynamic one two punch on guitar, reminiscent of the glory days of the early 1970s. This soundboard recording captures the Allmans in St Paul on June 28, 1992, 27 years ago today, during their early 1990s comeback!

After completing the almost 2 year long River tour in late 1981, Bruce Springsteen took 1982 off.  The lack of a formal tour, however, didn't mean that Springsteen didn't play any live shows.  He dropped in on several New Jersey clubs throughout the year, such as The Fast Lane, the Royal Manor North, Big Man's West and of course, the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, playing impromptu gigs with whatever band had been booked that night.  This soundboard recording captures Bruce at the Stone Pony on June 27, 1982, 37 years ago today, joining Cats On A Smooth Surface, one of the  most popular bar bands of the 1980s Jersey Club scene.

• On Saturday, March 27, Bruce Springsteen opened for the Allman Brothers at the Sunshine Inn in Asbury Park.  Two interesting notes - the Allmans had just finished the 3 shows at the Fillmore East that were taped for their legendary live album.  Springsteen had no band at the time, having just broken  up Steel Mill.  He put together a makeshift band for the gig, which he called the Friendly Enemies, that featured a host of folks who one day would comprise the E-Street Band, such as Miami Steve Van Zandt, and Gary Tallent.  Southside Johnny was also part of the Friendly Enemies!

For 3 years, from 1968 to 1971, the Fillmore East in New York (along with its companion venue, the Fillmore West in San Francisco) established itself as the premier rock venue in the United States. Run by Bill Graham, who often booked triple bills with 2 shows a night, and dubbed the “Church of Rock & Roll”, the 2700 seat Fillmore East hosted almost every major musical act of the day. Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Who, The Led Zeppelin, The Grateful Dead, CSNY, John Lennon, The Byrds, Derek and The Dominoes, and Jefferson Airplane, just to name a few, all played the Fillmore. At least 40 different live albums were recorded at venue, including the Allman Brother’s legendary At The Fillmore East double disc. In fact, the Allman Brothers played so many shows at the Fillmore East, that they were nicknamed “Bill Graham’s House band”. Perhaps that’s why, when Graham made the decision to close the Fillmore East in June 1971 due to economic pressures from larger concert arenas, (he’d close its sister site just a few weeks later), he chose the Allmans to headline the last 3 concerts at the venue. Albert King and The J. Geil’s Band served as the lead in bands for all 3 shows. On the last night, June 27, 1971, 4 dozen years ago today, they were also joined by special guests the Beach Boys, Country Joe McDonald, Edgar Winter's White Trash, and Mountain. The marquee outside the Fillmore East for that last show proclaimed “that’s all folks”, stealing a line from Porky Pig. It truly was the end of an era.  Gregg Allman - 2011-06-25 - Victoria-Gasteiz, Spain (SBD) 

The year 2011 was a series of highs and lows for the Gregg Allman. In January, he released the album Low Country Blues.  The disc was high highest charting solo album ever, debuting at #5 on the Billboard charts.  In addition, it would be nominated for a Grammy for best Blues album. Allman went on tour in Europe to promote the album.  This soundboard recording captures him in Spain on June 25, 2011, 8 years ago today promoted the album heavily in Europe, Unfortunately, he would have to cancel the rest of the tour due to an upper respiratory infection.  That led to lung surgery later in 2011,  and rehab in 2012 for addiction following his treatments. Just 5 years later, we would lose him to liver cancer.  RIP.

The New Jersey music scene rose to prominence in 1975 thanks to Bruce Springsteen. Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes were the 2nd most famous act to emerge from that scene. Their first three albums, I Don't Want To Go Home (1976), This Time It's For Real (1977), and Hearts Of Stone (1978), were filled with Stax R&B influences. All 3 discs were produced and arranged by Steve Van Zandt, the group's co-founder, who also played guitar in Springsteen's E Street band. Van Zandt's tune, I Don't Want To Go Home, became Southside's signature song, an evocative mixture of horn-based melodic riffs and sentimental lyrics. The band's repertoire also included The Fever, Talk to Me, This Time It's For Real, Love on the Wrong Side of Town, a wonderful cover of Sam Cooke's Having A Party, and the definitive version of Springsteen's Hearts of Stone. This FM broadcast captures them taking the Jersey sound to Tarrytown, NY on June 25, 1980, 39 years ago today.

Southside Johnny/Allman Brothers Connections

• During the Allmans 2009 40th anniversary run at the Beacom Theater, the Asbury Jukes horn section sat in withe band on March 13.
• Then at the March 21, 2009 show, Southside and the entire Asbiry Jukes band joined the Allmans on stage.
• Southside also sat in with the Allmans during their 2007 Beacon run.
• In 2016, when Gregg was forced to cancel numerous live dates due to hos failing health, Southside and the Jukes subbed for hin at a show at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Homdel NJ.

On May 3, 1994, the Allman Brothers released Where it All begins, their 11th studio album and 3rd since the band reformed in 1990. The new disc included the single No One To Run With, which went to #7 on the Billboard mainstream rock charts. The album also featured Soulshine, written by Warren Haynes, which became one of Warren's signature live tunes, whether playing with the Allmans, Govt Mule or solo. This excellent audience recording captures the Allman's just about 2 months after the release of Where It All Begins, in Denver, on June 25, 1994, a quarter century ago today.

In 1989, the Neville Brothers released the album Yellow Moon, to critical acclaim.  Both All Music and Rolling Stone gave the album a 4 star review,  Lou Reed selected it as one of his picks of 1989. In addition, the track Healing Chant won a Grammy best pop instrumental performance.  Overall, the disc gave the Neville Briothers more mainstream appeal and attention, resulting in an appearance at the Glastonbury Festival, on June 24, 1990, 29 years ago today, as captured in this Fm Broadcast.

In April 1973, the Marshall Tucker Band band released their self titled debut album, part of the growing Southern Rock movement that was gaining popularity at the time. The album featured 8 songs, all written by Toy Caldwell, including Can’t You See, which would become a staple of FM radio play. The disc was recorded at Capricorn Studios in Macon, Georgia, where the Allman Brothers also recorded. The band released their follow up record, A New Life, which included 24 Hours At A Time and Fly Eagle Fly, in February 1974. This FM Broadcast captures the Marshall Tucker Band on tour promoting their first 2 albums in Denver on June 23, 1974, 45 years ago today.

• Like the Allman Brothers, the Marshall Tucker Band recorded their music for Capricorn Records, becoming the label's 2nd largest selling act behind the Allmans.
• On September 10, 1973, the Allman Brothers and MTB, along with Wet Willie,  appeared on Don Kirschner's Rock Concert.
• On December 31, 1973, the MTB opened for the Alllman Brothers at the Cow Palace in San Francisco.  
• In 1975, both the Allman Brothers and MTB played concerts to raise funds for Jimmy Carter's campaign for President.

Van Morrison - 1977-06-22 - Hilversum, Netherlands (FM)

From 1970 to 1974, Van Morrison released 6 albums of new material, plus the live disc, Too Late To Stop Now. It was an immensely prolific period for Van the Man, marked by incredible artistic and commercial successes such as Moondance, Tupelo Honey, and St. Dominic’s Preview. Of course, given the number of albums he released, some of the material, such as Hard Nose to The Highway, met with less than stellar reviews. That level of production also put great stress on Van the Man, who by the end of 1974 was so burned out that he contemplated leaving the music business. He took 3 years off, not releasing another album until 1977’s aptly named “A Period Of Transition”, a collaboration with Doctor John.  Morrison planned to tour behind the album, with Dr. John as part of the band. They held 2 rehearsals in Hilversum the first of which on June 22, 1977, 42 years ago today, was recorded for a TV special. After the rehearsals, however, the ever unpredictable Mr, Morrison cancelled the tour and returned to England. He woul dnot go back on the road until October 1978, after the release of the album Wavelength!

Van Morrison/Allman Brothers Connections

• The legendary Knebowrth Rock Festival was first held in 1974 - the headline acts that year - the Allman Brothers and Van Morrison.
• After Bill Graham's death in 1991, the Allman Brothers, at the urging of Warren Haynes, would occasionally play a live version of Van Morrison's Into The Mystic, because it was the legendary promoter's favorite song.

Bob Dylan - 1995-06-21 - Philadelphia PA (SBD)

On June 21, 1995, Bob Dylan's Never Ending Tour took him to Philadelphia for the first of 2 shows, as captured in this soundboard recording. The show was part of an east coast swing that also included concerts in Vermont, Boston, East Rutherford and Washington DC. At the last 2 stops, he opened for the Grateful Dead on what would proved to be their final tour before Jerry Garcia's passing.. At just about the same time Dylan launched this tour, Columbia Records released his MTV Unplugged album. Dylan made his appearance on that show at Sony Music Studios in New York on November 17 and 18, 1994. Originally, Dylan had wanted to do a set of traditional folk songs, however, at MTV's request, he instead performed mostly classics from his early albums. The result was that the album gave Dylan his best sales in years, as it reached #23 on the Billboard charts in the US, while climbing all the way to #10 in the UK.

• In the last decade of their career, the Allman Brothers added covers of Dylan’s Blind Willie McTell and Don’t Think Twice Its Alright to their live set lists. 
• Of course, one of the Allman’s signature tunes is their cover of Statesboro Blues, which was written by the one and only Blind Willie McTell who is the subject of the Dylan’s tune referenced above. 
• The Allmans appeared at Watkins Glen with The Band, who of course, started their career as Dylan’s back up band. 
• Allman Brothers guitarist Derek Trucks was only 12 years old when Dylan invited him on stage to play guitar on Highway 61 Revisited. 
• Perhaps the strangest connection between Dylan and the Allman Brothers is the photo shared on our Paul McCartney post earlier this month that features Dylan, Macca and Greg Allman at 1975 party thrown by Rod Stewart.

Steve Winwood - 2014-06-20 - Telluride, CO (FM)

Since 1974, the town of Telluride CO has hosted an Annual Bluegrass Festival. Initially, attendance was capped at 10,000 fans, though in 2013 it was raised to 12,000.  In recent years, the festival has expanded to include artists outside of the traditional bluegrass genre. As a result ,a host of rock royalty has played the festival, including Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, John Hiatt, John Fogerty, Bruce Hornby, Elvis Costello, Robert Plant, David Crosby, Counting Crows, and the Tedeschi Trucks Band, just to name a few. In 2014, Steve Winwood headlined the festival, as captured in this FM broadcast from June 2014, 5 years ago today.

BB King - 1971-06-19 - Fillmore East, New York, NY (SBD)

The man nicknamed The King Of The Blues, who called his guitar Lucille, is regarded as one of the greatest guitarists of all time, whatever source you use. The 2003 Rolling Stone list of the greatest guitarists ranked him at #3 while the 2001 list had him at #6. To put that in perspective, only 7 men cracked the to 10 on both lists - King, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Chuck Berry and Duane Allman. This soundboard captures BB on June 19, 1971, 4 dozen years ago today at the legendary Fillmore East in New York.  Jus t8 days later, the Allman Brothers would play the last concert ever at the venue!

• Prior to forming the Allman Brothers, Duane & Greg had a band called Hourglass, who played a medley of BB King songs - Sweet Little Angel, It's My Own Fault and How Blue Can You Get?.
• BB King, was also at the concert featuring Otis Redding (see our June 4 post) that inspired Greg and Duane to start a band!
• When the Allman Brothers first show at The Fillmore East. leading in for Blood Sweat & Tears didn't go over well with the crowd, promoter Bill Graham,  who thought the band was phenomenal, asked them what musicians they liked - The Allmans answered BB King and The Grateful Dead. As a result, several weeks later, on January 15, 1970, Graham had the Allmans open for BB King at the Fillmore West.

Peter Frampton - 1994-06-18 - North Hollywood CA  (FM)

Peter Frampton released his self titled album in 1994, the 11th studio album of his career.  The album was reissued in 2000, with the addition of several live acoustic bonus tracks from 2 concerts in Japan in 1994. Unfortunately, the disc did not chart and reviews were less than kind. All Music, for example, wrote that Frampton's "brand of mainstream rock was irrelevant in the mid-'90s, but more to the point, it wasn't very good."  That didn't stop Frampton from touring behind the disc.  This FM broadcast captures him in North Hollywood on June 18, 1994, a quarter century ago today.

• Peter Frampton was a fan of the Allman Brothers growing up, and considered Duane one of the best guitarists of the 1970s, along with Hendrix and Terry Kath of Chicago.
• Frampton met Greg Allman in 2004, when recording the song Fingerprints with Warren Haynes  It was a start of a friendship that lasted until Greg passed away in 2017.
• Frampton sat in with the Allman Brothers at several shows during their 2006 and 2007 Beacon Theater runs.

In 1998, Willie Nelson released his 45th (yes - 45th!) studio album, entitled Teatro. The recording sessions for the album were held in an old movie theater (hence the album's title since teatro means theater in Italian) in Oxnard, California and were produced by Daniel Lanois. Many of the tunes on the album were re-recordings of songs Willie wrote and first recorded in the 1960s, including Darkness on the Face of the Earth (1961), My Own Peculiar Way (1964), Home Motel (1962), I Just Can't Let You Say Goodbye (1968), I've Just Destroyed the World (1962) and Three Days" (1962).  The album also featured backing vocals by Emmylou Harris, This soundboard recording captures Willie on tour in support of Teatro in Telluride on June 17, 199, 2 decades ago today.  Fittingly, Emmylou sits in with Willie for sevral tunes during the show.

• In 1980, Willie Melson recorded a version of the Allman's tune Midnight Rider which climbed to #6 on the Billboard Country Music charts.
• In 1995, Willie Nelson inducted the Allmans into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, noting that "when the Allman Brothers Band came up on the scene in 1969, they created a whole new genre of music and their southern rock was an exciting fusion of rock, jazz country, and blues, and was reflective of the emergence of the new South.
• Both Greg Allman and Willie Nelson played at the 2012 Peach Festival.
• Willie and The Allman Brothers both played at the Lockin Festival in 2014.

Beach Boys - 1969-06-16 - Paris, France (FM)

In March 1969, The Beach Boys released 20/20, their 15th studio album and 20th overall including live discs and compilations, hence the name. Much of the disc consists of outtakes from earlier albums, pieced together by Carl and Dennis Wilson, as Brian was absent during most of the album's recording after admitting himself into a psychiatric hospital. The album went to #68 on the Billboard Charts, a far cry from the bands chart performance earlier in the decade.  This soundboard recording captures the Beach Boys, sans Brian, on tour in support of 20.20, in Paris on June 16, 1969, a half century ago today,

• According to legend, the Beach Boys told promoter Bill Graham they would only play if they went on last. Graham told the to pack up and leave, as he had his closing band, The Allman Brothers. The Beach Boys swallowed their pride and went on in their scheduled spot, leaving the Allmans, one of Graham's favorite bands, to be the last act to ever perform at the Fillmore
