Frank Sinatra with Liza Minelli - 1987-12-06 - East Rutherford, NJ (SBD)

On December 4, 1987, my parents drove to the Brenden Byrne Arena to see Frank Sinatra and Liza Minelli in concert.  The crowd of 19,000 filed in, took their sets and waited for the show to begin. They were in for a rude surprise. About 10 minutes before the curtain was to rise, the concert was cancelled.  The reason - the sheet music for the orchestra never arrived.  It was supposed to have been shipped from Los Angeles via air freight, but somehow got lost or delayed.  The show was rescheduled for Sunday, December 6, 1987, 37 years ago today. This soundboard recording captures that rescheduled performance, which unfortunately, my parents were unable to attend due to family commitments.

Frank Sinatra - 1960-10-02 - Maui, HI (SBD)

1960s - #1: On October 2, 1960, 64 years ago today, Frank Sintara perfromed a fund rasing concert for John F. Kennedy's presidential campaign (Note - some sources say this was on October 12). Sinatra was in Hawaii at the time shooting the movie The Devil at Four O'Clock.  In  response to criticism from Republican candidate for the House of Representatives, Frederick Titcomb who claimed show business people were making a farce out of serious politics, Frank defended the right of entertainers to campaign for their political convictions. Sinatra responed that  "The Hearst papers throughout the nation are campaigning for Nixon and throwing a lot of propaganda in. If this organization of newspapers can do it, then why shouldn't I just by singing? I've been campaigning for Democrats ever since I marched in a parade for Al Smith when I was a 12-year-old kid."  Interestingly, Sinatra would also campiagn for Demcrat Hubert Humphey in 1968, but in the 1980s raised funds for Republican Ronald Regan.

For those of you who are old like me, you'll remember when Labor Day weekend meant the Jerry Lewis telethon to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy.  The telethon would start Sunday night and run through Labor day, with Lewis and countless guest stars appealing to viwers at home to call and donate.  Frank Sintatra made his first appearanc on the telethon on September 1, 1975, 49 years ago today, as captured in this TV soundboard recording.  Frank came on stage 3 different times, with each short set including the tune, I Believe I'm Gonna Love You..  By the way, it was Frank who at the next year's telethon reunited Lewis and former partner Dean Martin, who hadn't spoken to one another for 20 years, an emotional moment you can watch here.

Frank Sinatra 1976 - Back To Back - #1: In June 2016, the Sabre Room in Hickory Hills' IL, closed its doors after 67 years in operation. The family-owned business was founded in 1949 by Arnold and Marie Muzzarelli, who actually lived upstairs! Sabre Room encompassed 100,000 square feet of entertainment and ballroom space, and acres of parking (go here for a video tour). In recent years, it was known for holding wedding receptions, New Year’s Eve parties, and countless other celebrations in its various rooms. In its heyday, with space for up to 2,500 people, it was a popular concert venue for top stars such as Dean Martin, Liberace, Bob Hope, Dorothy Lamour and Rudy Valle, just to name a few. The biggest name of all to play the Sabre Room, however, may have been Frank Sinatra, who played  the venue from May 13 to 15, 1976, doing 2 shows each night. In 1988, the legendary Rat Pack - Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr - announced a reunion tour, entitled Together Again. They scheduled 29 concerts, opening on March 13 in Oakland and closing on April 9 in New York City, the last night of 4 in the Big Apple. Unfortunately, after just 6 shows, Dean Martin dropped out of the tour, citing health issues. Dean was clearly in no shape to perform as during his time on the tour he constantly forgot lyrics and slurred his words, Frank and Sammy, in the grand tradition that "the show must go on", continued the tour as a duo. Later, Liza Minnelli joined Frank and Sammy as part of the tour.  This soundboard (or excellent audience) recording captures Frank, Sammy and Liza in Tokyo, on February 25, 1989, 35 years ago today.

In 1952, Frank Sinatra's career hit rock bottom.  He was barely drawing 100 people to concert halls that helf over a thousand people. His relationship with Columbia Records fell apart.  Frank appeared done.  Then in 1953, two  major events changed everything for Sinatra.  First, he won an Academy Award for best supporting actor for the movie From Here To Eternity, outting his film career back on track.  Second,  he moved to capitol Records, where he began recording with Nelson Riddle. The first song they worked on toegther was I've Got the World On A String, and after listening to the playbacks, Sinatra could not hide his enthusiasm, exclaiming, "I'm back, baby, I'm back!"  And he was!  His first single for Capitol, Young At Heart, released in early 1954, climbed to #2 on the charts and was eventually named Song Of The Year. So, when Frank headed down under in early 1955 for a series of shows in Austrailia, the Chairman Of The Board had officlaly regained his title!  This soundboard or excellent audioence recording captures Frank during the first of two shows in Melbourne, on January 19, 1955, 68 years ago today!  By the way, this is now the oldest recording on this blog!

During the spring and summer of 1981, Freank Sinatra recrdied what woul dturn out to be his last solo album for Reprise Records, the label he founded in 1960!  The disc, entitkled She Shot Me Down, would also turn out to be the next to last solo album of his long, illustrius career. Theough not a commercial success, harkened back to the triumphs of Sinatra's Capitol years, a thought-provoking set of torch songs with soaring strings, lyrics fraught with loss and regret, and heart-rending, world-weary vocals.  In between recording sessions for the disc, Sinatra played a series of concerts in South America, 1 in Buenos Aries, Aregentina and 3 in Sao Paolo, Brazil.  This soundbaord reocrding captures Fran;s first night in Sao Paolo, on August 13m 1981, 41 years ago today.

1984: In August 1984, Frank Sinatra released his 57th, and final, solo studio album of his long storied career, entitled LA Is My Lady.  The album was produced by Quincy Jones and featured Fran;s first studio recording of Mack The Knife, a song he had been playing in concert for decades.  This soundboard recording captures Frank in Chicago on May 11, 1984, 38 years ago today and just a few month's before the album's release.  The set list includres the title track from the forthcoming disc, and concludes with the so appropriate My Kind of Town (Chicago Is).

Sinatra World Tour 1962 - #1: In 1962, Frank Sinatra launched a world tour that took him to Japan, Hong Kong, Israel, Greece, Italy, Spain, France, England, and Monaco. He was backed by Bill Miller (piano), Irv Cottler (drums), Al Viola (guitar), Harry Klee (flue/sax), Ralph Pena (bass), and Emil Richards (vibes), The tour was the largest humanitarian gesture of Fran;s long storied career. Every concert was designed to raise money for children's charities. At the press conference prior to the tour, Sinatra said he was "an over privileged adult, [who] ought to help underprivileged children." Frank paid for the entire tour, even though first lady Jackie Kennedy had offered to have the State Department sponsor the venture. Buddy Rich, who had played drums for Sinatra, described the tour as follows: "He took [six] of the best musicians in Los Angeles, He chartered an airplane, went to Japan, went to London [to raise money] for the orphanages. He paid the transportation of the entire technical crew, plus the musicians, plus the entertainers. He gave every musician a set price plus their expenses for hotels and food. And nobody ever knew about it. He just went over and did this out of the goodness of his heart. You gotta be some kind of a beautiful man to do this." 1960s - #4: Fifty four years ago today, on February 12, 1964, musicians and celebrities gathered in Los Angeles for a tribute to legendary composer Cole Porter.  Frank Sinatra was the biggest name to attend, kicking off the night with a set of classics.  Ethel Merman, Jimmy Stewart, Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire also too part in this historic night, which is all captured in this soundboard recording.

Frank Sinatra - 1994-05-12 - Atlantic City, NJ (SBD)

In 1994, some 60 years after he first started performing live, Frank Sintra left the public stage for the final time.  In December, he played his final 2 public concerts at the Tokyo Dome in Japan.  he would play live just one more time, in February 1995, a t a private show at the Palm Desert Marriott Ballroom, on the closing night of the Frank Sinatra Desert Classic golf tournament. This soundboard recording captures him during that final year of concerts in Atlantic city on may 12, 1994, 26 years ago today. Almost 4 years later to the day, May 14, 1998, Frank Sinatra would pass away at the age of 82.  How do I like to remember Frank?  Well I think Bono said it best when he presented him with the LegAt the Legend Award at the 1994 Grammy Awards.  U2's front man remarked that "Frank's the chairman of the bad attitude ... Rock 'n roll plays at being tough, but this guy is the boss – the chairman of boss ... I'm not going to mess with him, are you?"
