April's Theme At So Many Roads

Well, after spending February in the 1970s and March in the 1980s, I thought about making April's theme the 1990s, but decided that was too predictable.  

So instead, I'm bringing back an old favorite, entitled, Same Tour, Different Show,  In other words, for each artist we post in June, we’ll feature 2 or more concerts from the same tour. Some times, those shows we’ll be back to back nights, or even 2 shows from the same day (old guys like me remember the days when bands played early and late shows at places like the Fillmore East, The Palladium and The Capital Theatre).

Grateful Dead - 1981-03-28 - Rockpalast, Essen (SBD)

Welcome to our second post highlighting the Rockpalast broadcast from March 28, 1981, 305 years ago today. For those of you who have been regular visitors to So Many Roads,  you'll know that we have posted numerous Grateful Dead shows featuring special guests ranging from Bob Dylan to Stephen Stills to John Belushi.  At this show, Pete Townshend of The Who, fresh off his band's performance earlier in the night, joins The Dead for 3 songs during the second set.  The picture of Garcia and Townshend included in the artwork for this bootleg is a classic.  In addition, The Karamazov Brothers joined the Dead during the Drums segment.  By the way, while this show featured plenty of guests, that should not overshadow the fact that the Grateful Dead were in fine form.  I had seen the band about 3 weeks earlier on March 10, 1981 at Madison Square Garden, which is still one of my favorite concerts.  In fact, Deadbase ranks this Rockpalast show as one of the 5 best performances by the Dead in 1981 (and my March 10 show as one of the 10 best!).  Download it and see for yourself!

The Who - 1981-03-28 - Essen, Germany (SBD)

Launched in 1974, Rockpalast (Rock Palace) is a German music television show that broadcasts live on German television station Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR).  Over the years, hundreds of rock and jazz bands have performed on Rockpalast, including many of rock's biggest acts. (For more detail about Rockpalast, go here).   For example, on March 28, 1981, 35 years ago today, Rockpalast hosted both The Who and The Grateful Dead!  Better yet, soundboard recordings are available of both performances.   This post features The Who's set for that day, which includes numerous songs from 1978's Who Are You album, and has Kenny Jones on drums, doing his best to fill the shoes of the legendary Keith Moon.  Download this one now, and come back later today for the Grateful Dead's show, which includes a very special guest appearance by one of the members of The Who!

Dave Edmunds - 1982-03-26 - Paris, France (FM)

When Rockpile unexpectedly disbanded in 1981, Dave Edmunds made wholesale changes in his musical life.  He switched record labels, moving from Swan Song to Arista. He put together a new band, which included guitarist Mickey Gee, bassist John David, pianist Geraint Watkins, and drummer Dave Charles. That group would record and tour with Edmunds throughout the rest of the 1980s. Amidst all that change, one thing stayed the same -- Edmunds' ability to play good old straight ahead rock and roll. This FM broadcast captures Edmunds and his new band in Paris on March 26, 1982, 34 years ago today. In addition to songs from his then soon to be released album DE7, Edmunds also plays tunes from his days with Nick Lowe, as well as his 1970 hit, I Hear You Knockin'.

Elton John - 1984-03-25 - Sydney, Australia (FM)

Nine years ago today, on March 25, 2007, my wife and I, along with my sister and her husband, were fortunate enough to attend an historic night in rock history. Elton John played Madison Square Garden that night in celebration of his 60th birthday! It was also Elton's 60th performance at the "World's Greatest Arena", the most by any single artist. (For a list of all 60, go here). The night included an introduction by Bill Clinton, appearances by Whoppi Goldberg, Robin Williams and Bernie Taupin, and the raising of a banner to the Garden's rafters commemorating the show. Most importantly, it featured Elton in fine form, belting our 3 hours of music, from his earliest songs to his biggest hits. His set included a great version of Sad Songs, which made the rounds as a YouTube video. The 4 of us actually appeared in the video for a few seconds, when the cameras panned the audience. So, when we bought the official DVD of the show, we were hoping our moment of fame would be immortalized forever. As luck would have it, they used a different camera angle for the DVD version of the song, so we are no where to be found. Such is life. In any event, I can't post the show here since it has been officially released. Instead, in keeping with our 1980s theme this month, we'll go back 32 years ago today, to Elton's 37th birthday with this FM broadcast from March 25, 1984 in Australia! Enjoy!

David Crosby - 1984-03-24 - New York, NY (SBD)

When David Crosby, played the Beacon Theatre in New York on March 24, 1984, 32 years ago today his life was a mess, to put it bluntly.  A few years earlier, in 1982, Crosby was arrested and later spent nine months in prison in Texas on a variety of drug and weapons charges. Then about a year after this concert, in 1985, he was arrested for a hit-and-run incident, as well as possession of a concealed pistol and drug paraphernalia. Crosby had driven into a fence in a Marin County suburb and responding officers found a .45-caliber pistol and cocaine in his car. Seemingly the only place Crosby could function was on stage, as his performance, as captured in this soundboard recording,  does not seem impacted in any way by his troubled personal life.  By the way, Crosby is Roger McGuin for 2 songs from their days together in The Byrds.

The Pretenders - 1980-03-23 - Boston MA (FM)

The Pretenders released their self titled debut album in December 1979 and it was almost immediately a commercial and critical success. The disc reached #1 on the charts in the UK and climbed to #9 on The Billboard charts in the US. Famed rock critic Robert Christgau gave the disc an A- rating while Rolling Stone wrote that the album “stands as some of the freshest, most provocative music around right now." This FM broadcast from Boston from March 23, 1980, 3 dozen years ago today, captures The Pretenders on tour in support of that disc, which would eventually be named one of the top 500 albums of all time by Rolling Stone.

Jerry Garcia - 1989-03-22 - San Francisco CA (HQ Aud)

When the decade of the 1980s opened, the Grateful Dead celebrated their 15th anniversary with a host of shows in San Francisco, New Orleans and New York that featured an acoustic set.  For the rest of the decade, however, the Dead rarely ventured in that direction again.  That makes this high quality audience recording of Jerry Garcia, accompanied by fellow Dead band mate Bob Weir and long time JGB bassist John Kahn, doing a short acoustic performance, a true treat.  The benefit show from March 22, 1989, 27 years ago today, comes to you courtesy of my good friend, Wolfclan, who has a real knack for finding excellent, rare performances by the Dead and Jerry.

Van Morrison - 1982-03-21 - London, UK (SBD) 

In early 1982, Van Morrison released the album Beautiful Vision, a disc which has met which mixed critical reviews over the years. For example, while Robert Christgau gave the disc a grade of A-, reviewer John Milward called it “emphatically half-great.” Opinions about the disc are so divided that Rolling Stone magazine has flipped flopped its opinion of Beautiful Vision over the years. When it first debuted, they gave the disc a 4 out of 5 rating. However, years later, they ranked it as one of the “15 worst albums by great bands.” Personally, I’m huge fan of the album and of songs such as Dweller On The Threshold, Cleaning Windows, Northern Muse, She Gives me Religion and the title track. In any event, to garner some publicity for the album, Van the Man played 4 nights at the Dominion Theater in London. Morrison's love of live performing was reignited by this set of concerts and he commented at the time that it was "more like appearing in a play, going to the theatre and doing your job every day - which I prefer to touring because that's very fragmented and disorientating." According to Johnny Rogan, these performances "are still regarded by many as his most memorable since the glory days of the Caledonia Soul Orchestra.” This soundboard recoeding captures the 3rd night at the Dominion on March 21, 1982, 34 years ago today. The Police - 1982-03-20 - Houston, TX (SBD)

In January 22, 1982, I saw The Police  at Madison Square Garden in New York. The Police were touring with the Go Go's, and the tour was historic in a number of ways ways. Until this point, the newer bands on the rock scene were still playing small concert halls in NY/NJ, such as the Palladium (where I saw the Pretenders and Go Go's in the fall of 1981) and the Capitol Theatre (where I had seen Joe Jackson in 1980 and would soon see him again in just a few months). Here were the Police, however, making the jump to the next level by headlining a show at the "World's Greatest Arena". The Ghost In The Machine album, which had been released in October 1981, had risen to #2 on the Billboard charts. The single, Every Little Thing She Does is Magic, topped that, by going to #1. The Police proved that night that they belonged on the big stage, playing an incredible set highlighted by a 20,000 person sing-along to Walking On The Moon, and a driving, passionate, almost out of control encore that melded Can't Stand Losing You, Be My Girl and So Lonely into a rock and roll anthem of lost love. I've searched for a copy of that show but to no avail. Fortunately, I found this soundboard recording from later in that historic tour that captures the Police in Houston on March 20, 1982, 34 years ago today.

In May 1984, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble released their 2nd album, entitled Couldn’t Stand The Weather. While the disc did not receive as many accolades as their debut album, Texas Flood, it still climbed to #31 on the Billboard charts. Vaughan and Double Trouble toured North America, Europe, and Australia from February through December 1984 to support Couldn't Stand the Weather. This soundboard recording captures them on February 18, 1984, 32 years ago today, in Honolulu at the CBS Records Convention.

The Alarm - 1988-03-17 - San Jose, CA (FM)

When they released of their self titled debut album in July 1983, and served as the lead in for U2 that same summer, The Alarm were quickly heralded as perhaps the next "big thing".  The similarities in their style to that io U2 brought on the inevitable comparisons, which may have been simply unfair to a band just starting out.  In any event, The Alarm never quite reached the heights U2 diud, but they most certainly produced some fine tunes, including The Stand, 68 Guns and Rain In The Summertime (my favorite), just to name a few.  This FM broadcast captures The Alarm on tour 5 years after their debut, on March 17 1988, 28 yeas ago today.

Jimmy Buffett - 1980-03-14 - Palladium, NY (FM)

As the decade of the 1970’s came to a close, Jimmy Buffett became an “overnight sensation”. His 1977 album, Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes, became his first album to go gold, eventually reaching platinum status and climbing to #12 on the Billboard charts. The single, Margaritaville, went all the way to #8 on the charts. He followed that success with the album, Son Of A Son Of A Sailor in 1978, which cracked the Billboard Top 10. The single Cheeseburger In Paradise made the Billboard top 40, peaking at #32. Of course, like most “overnight sensations”, Buffett had paid plenty of dues along the ways. The 2 albums discussed here were actually the 8th and 9th of his career, He had released more than 15 singles before Margaritaville made him as household name. For The Band, the 1980's marked their return to the rock stage, after the legendary retirement show , The Last Waltz, which had taken place in November 1976. November.  Of course, the reformed group consisted of only 4 of their original members -   Garth Hudson, Levon Helm, Rick Danko and Richard Manuel, as Robbie Robertson chose not to rejoin his former bandmates.  Then in early 1986, about 3 years into their comeback, The Band lost Richard Manuel, who tragically committed suicide. Manuel had suffered for years from alcoholism and drug addiction. Down to just 3 of the 5 original members,  The Band could have called it quits for a 2nd time. Instead, the trio decided to continue to tour. For Canadian born rocker Bruce Cockburn, the decade of the 1980s was hen he finally gained some mainstream recognition in the United States. His 1980 single, Wondering Where The Lions Are, went to #21 on the Billboard charts. His 1984 album Stealing Fire, produced the well know singles Lovers In A Dangerous Time and If I Had A Rocket Launcher.  he title track of his 1987 compilation album Waiting On A Miracle, later became a stalpe of the Jerry Garcia Band's set lists.  This soundboard recording captures Cockburn live during the final year of the 1980s, in Philadelphia on March 10, 1989, 27 yeara ago today.

1985 - On March 2, 1984, British coal miners went on strike in response to a decsion by the government to cut national production of coal and close numerous mining operations, which would eliminate 20,000 jobs. The year long strike, which soimetimes turned violent, created immense financial hardshiops for the miners, their fanilies and their communities. The miners finally returned to work exactly a year after they strick, unable to change the government's position.  To help the miner;s recover some of their financial losses, Elvis Costello perfromed a benefit concert on March 9, 1985, 31 years ago today, as captured in this FM broadcast. It would be the only show he would play with the Attractions that year, but not the only benefit concert he would partcipate in.  On July 13, 1985, Elvis did a solo rendition of The Beatles' All You Need Is Love as part of the London portion of Live Aid.

Grateful Dead - 1985-03-09 - Berkeley, CA (SBD) 

In 1985, the Grateful Dead celebrated the band's 20th anniversary. Deadheads tend to passionately debate the quality of the music that year. Some feel that the band, inspired by their milestone anniversary, played their best shows of the 80s. Others don't believe the music was much different from the prior years, and certainly not up to the standard of 1989. I tend to lean in the direction that 1985 provided many inspired moments especially during the Spring run, though it’s clear that by year end, Jerry was mired deep in a cloud of drugs which would eventually contribute his near death coma in 1986. This soundboard, from March 9, 1985, 31 years ago today, at the Berkeley Community Theatre, is emblematic of the band’s new found creativity that year, For example, the first set opens with the unique pairing of Bertha into One More Saturday Night. Likewise, Set 2 opens with China Cat Sunflower, which would normally be followed by I Know You Rider, but in this case, is paired with Cumberland Blues.  By the way, if you like what you hear from this 1985 show,  we'll have another one for you in just 4 days!

As the decade of the 1980s neared its end, The Kinks also were also nearing the end of their time as a commercial force in rock.  Their 1986 album, Think Visual, peaked at #81 on the Billboard charts. Their 1987 live album The Road, couldn't crack the top 100, peaking at #110.  This FM broadcast captures the band on tour in between the release of those 2 discs, on March 8, 1987, 29 years ago today, in Chicago.

The Pretenders - 1984-03-07 - Los Angeles, CA  (FM)

During 1982 and 1983, The Pretenders were a band in crisis. Original members James Honeyman-Scott and Peter Fardon both died of drug over doses during that time. Undeterred by these twin tragedies, Chrissie Hynde, along with the only other original band member Martin Chambers, soldiered on. Hynde first recruited Billy Bremmer, Tony Butler, and Paul Carrack to temporarily fill in, then later replaced them with new full time band members Rob McIntosh, Malcolm Foster and Rupert Black (Black did not work with the band in the recording studio but did accompany them on tour). Despite the turmoil, The Pretenders produced some of their finest work during that period. The album, Learning To Crawl, released in January 1984, went to number 5 on the Billboard charts. The disc spawned 5 singles, Back on The Chain Gang, My City Was Gone, Middle of The Road, Show Me and Thin Line Between Love And Hate, and also included tunes which became staples on FM Rock radio, such as Time The Avenger and 2000 Miles. This soundboard recording from March 1984, 32 years ago today, captures The Pretenders on tour in support of Learning To Crawl.

U2 made their first foray to North America in December 1980, playing 9 shows in 10 days in support of their debut album, Boy.  They returned to the US in March 1981 for a run that lasted until May 31, playing 60 shows in small clubs across the country.  At the time, the band had so little material that the encores consisted of replaying some of their more popular tunes, such as The Ocean, 11 O'Clock Tick Tock and I Will Follow.  Reviews of the band were harsh, such as this piece from NME - "Which is more than I can say for U2 who are basically little more than nonsense... This four-piece Irish group are nothing more than a very traditional hard rock outfit with a singer -- one Bono by name -- who'd love to be Rod Stewart, in imitation of whom he moves much of the time, when he isn't busy imitating the inevitable Iggy, of course...U2 are really quite awful, though the young people -- particularly the mutant punks -- at the pop concert seemed to enjoy their tired old fakery." On October 19, 1979, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers released their breakthrough album, Damn The Torpedoes. The disc climbed to #2 on the Billboard charts, where it stayed for 7 weeks, with the only thing preventing it from reaching the top spot being Pink Floyd’s monumental album The Wall. The album yielded two top 15 singles, Don't Do Me Like That which reached #10 and Refugee at #15. The album also contained soon to be FM radio favorites Here Comes My Girl, Even the Losers and Louisiana Rain.
